If the language is not used for the communication, it would make no sense to talk about pragmatics, so we can see that pragmatics is closely related to the context.Keywords: pragmatics; context; translationIn the process of translation, translators are trying to make communications between writers and readers. Therefore, pragmatics would be one of reliable criterions to estimate the quality of translation. This paper adopts Grice’s “Cooperative Principle” to analyze Xiechi’s translation on “The Battle to Change Corporate Culture”.I. A Brief Analysis on Source TextThe source text is a narration of the attitudes and behaviors of IBM. In his narration, he briefly introduced the origin and development of IBM; what’s more, he mainly talked about the IBM’s corporate culture which leads this company gets success. Translators would focus on the communicative purpose to accomplish this translation task successfully.II. A Brief Introduction on the “Cooperative Principle”“Cooperative Principle” is a theory put forward by Grice in 1975, which was considered to be a subclass of nonconventional implicates. Since our talk exchanges are rational, they must consist of utterances which are connected with each other. This theory guides us to achieve accepted purpose or direction of the talk exchanges.III. An Analysis on Xiechi’s Translation VersionMaxims of Quantity: Do not make your contribution more or less informative than is required.(1) BACK in the early 1990s, when a person saw or heard "IBM", what words and images came to mind? " Big computers", maybe.如果时间回到20世纪90年代，当一个人看见或听到“IBM”时，他/她第一个想到的词汇和画面是什么?”他/她可能会想到一个”大型的电脑“。
In the whole translation, the main subject, such as “IBM” should be translated into one fixed term and note others in brakets at the beginning so as to be quickly recognized by readers. However, in Xiechi’s translation, he uses “IBM” and “万国商业机器公司” in his translation version, but haven’t note that “IBM” refers to “万国商业机器公司”. Thus id readers only got Chinese version, they would possibly not understand relationship between these two terms.Maxims of Quality: Translation version should try to make contribution on the truth of source text. There are several problems in Xiechi’s translation, which breach this criterion.(1)When I abolished this dress code in 1995, it got an extraordinary amount of attention in the press. 我在1995年废除旧的着装要求时，这件事在新闻媒体上引起了轩然大波。
The collocation “废除…要求” in Xiechi’s translation version is not correct according to the Chinese usage. In Chinese, we usually use collocation such as, “废除…制度” and “取消…要求”. “废除” is used for the government or official institutions referring formal occasions in a large scale. This collocation is false in Chinese that is not acceptable by Chinese readers.Maxims of relevance: Be relevant to the content of source text.(1)Some thought it was an action of great portent. 一些人认为这是有大事要发生的预兆。
Analyzing the source text, the meaning of this sentence is equivalent to the title of this passage. “an action of great portent” refers to the change of corporate culture. In Xiechi’s translation version “大事” is not relevant to the theme of the passage, and it’s not specific. In my opinion, this sentence should be translated as “一些人认为这是企业文化变革发生的预兆”。
Maxims of manner: Be perspicuous, more specifically, it means to avoid obscure expressions, ambiguity, be brief and orderly.(1)dress according to the circumstances of your day and recognize who you will be with穿与你与你周围的环境相符的衣服并搞清楚你将与谁打交道.It is clearly reflected from Example (1) that although Xiechi’s translation conveys the meaning of source text, its language is redundant. The style of this source text is relatively formal and the language is simple and clear, which is consistent with the narrator’s status. So, the Chinese version should reflect this feature in language.ConclusionGenerally speaking, Xiechi’s translation has met the requirement of source text based on “Cooperative Principle”, but there are some several small aspects are not equivalent with it. Translation is a process involving in practical discourse between writer and reader. In order to improve the quality of translation, we should put the translation into the real context and seek for the profound meaning of the source text.
