As a child I loved him; as a school girl and young adult(成年人)I feared him and felt bitter about him. We talked along that afternoon, did some shopping, ate on the street table, and laughed over my son‟s funny facial expressions. Gone was my father‟s critical (挑剔的) air and strict rules. Who was this person I knew as my father, who seemed so friendly and interesting to be around? They want to make it easier for foreigners to order Chinese dishes when they travel. Some restaurants also hope that the translations will increase foreigners‟ knowledge of Chinese cuisine(烹饪).But an article in China Youth Daily says the English menu translations haven‟t live up to public expectation(期望). It argues most of the English names of Chinese dishes lack the cultural meaning and attraction of the dishes they describe. Instead, the translations only provide a list of each dish‟s ingredients, the article notes. For example, one English name of a Chinese dish appears as “stir-fried mutton slice with Chinese onion and green scallion(葱爆羊肉)”.Because the English translation focuses only on the ingredients, it fails to describe the dish‟s rich cultural meaning and charm. The dish‟s beautiful Chinese name, “Fo Tiao Qiang(佛跳墙)”, has a story behind it. Buddhist monks (和尚) are required to eat vegetables only , but they can‟t resist(忍住)the delicious dish. So they jump over the temple walls to get a taste of the dish. The article suggests that translators provide more beautiful translations of the names of Chinese dishes. It also notes a more vivid(生动的) English translation is very important to provide international visitors with a better understanding of Chinese cuisine.68. Why do many restaurants provide English translations of their menu ?A.Because they want to show their ingredients in dishes.B.Because the public expect them to do so.C.Because Chinese dishes are popular.D.Because it is convenient for foreigners to order food.69. It was a strange place. Martin and Tom wished that they had not accepted Jack's dare. They liked camping, but not near this swamp.“So,” Martin asked as they sat watching the hot coals. “How did this place get its name?”“Are you sure you want to hear it? It's a scary story,”warned Jack.“Of course!” cried out Tom. “If there were anything to be scared of,youwouldn't have chosen this place!”“Ok,but don't say I didn't warn you,” said Jack, and he began his tale.“Way back in time, a man called Dennis tried to start a f arm here. He built that cottage over there to live in. In those days, the area looked quite different—it was covered with tall trees and the swamp was a crystalclear river. After three hard years, Dennis had cleared several fields and planted crops. He was so proud of his success that he refused to listen to advice.”“‘You are clearing too much land,’ warned one old man. ‘The land is a living thing. It will hit back at you if you abuse it.’”“‘Silly fool,’ said Dennis to himself.‘If I clear more land,I can grow more crops.I'll become wealthier. He's just jealous!’”“Dennis continued to chop down trees. Small animals that relied on them for food and shelter were destroyed. He was so eager to expand his farm that he did not notice the river flowing slowly towards his door. He did not notice salt seeping to the surface of the land. He did not notice swamp plants choking all the native plants.”“What happened?”Martin asked. It was growing colder. He trembled, twisting his body closer to the fire.“The land hit back—just as the old man warned,”Jack shrugged. “Dennis disappeared. Old folks around here believe that swamp plants moved up from the river and dragged hi m underwater. His body was never found.”“What a stupid story,” laughed Tom. “Plants can't...” Before he had finished speaking, he screamed and fainted(晕倒). The other two boys jumped up with fright, staring at Tom. Suddenly, they burst out laughing. Some green swamp ivy(常春藤) had covered Tom's face. It was a while before Tom could appreciate the joke.36.The underlined word “dare” in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to________.A.courage B.assistanceC.instruction D.challenge37.Why did Jack tell Tom and Martin the story?A.To frighten them.B.To satisfy their curiosity.C.To warn them of the danger of the place.D.To persuade them to camp in the swamp.38.Why did Tom scream and faint?A.He saw Dennis's shadow.B.He was scared by a plant.C.His friend played a joke on him.D.The weather became extremely cold.39.What lesson can we learn from the story of Dennis?A.Grasp all, lose all.B.No sweat, no sweet.C.It is no use crying over spilt milk.D.He who makes no mistakes makes nothing.BFarmers are being told more needs to be done to stop them injuring at work. One in five British workplace deaths happens in agriculture even though farmers are only a small part of the working population.During the year 2010/11 there were 1,061 injuries in total and it is thought many more go unreported.Jim Chapman from Warwickshire had his arm torn off by farm machinery seven years ago when he was 23.“You don't realize how much you rely on your second arm until it's gone,”he said.He fell against a PTO shaft(传动轴),a spinning metal bar at the back of a tractor.“It catapulted(猛力掷出) me from one side of the machine to the other,”he said.“I landed on the floor, minus all my clothing. My left arm had been ripped off.”He admits tha t the machinery was missing part of its proper safety guard.“But again,”he added,“it was a rushed day. There were a few machines that didn't work. Also,I was getting behind with the jobs.”Over the last 10 years, other industries that you'd think of as dangerous, like building or quarrying(矿采),have lowered the number of workplace deaths and injuries. In the farming industry though, deaths remain high with 34 deaths in 2010/11.Judith Hackitt, the chair of the Health and Safety Executive(HSE) says it is “not acceptable” that the accident statistics for farming are still high.“People in farming don't have minor(较小的) injuries. When they get injured,it's bad.”she said.“When I said to the National Farmers' Union(NFU) that if I had sons I would not want them to work in agriculture,it really made them sit up and take notice.”There's a whole host of reasons why farming is as dangerous as it is.It is a very rough industry. Also,it's often because people are left alone. They could be young and inexperienced,or older people, who would have retired maybe 5 or 10years ago in other industries.Jim wants others to learn from his experience.“Look at what you're doing before you go running in,”he said.“You could make a mistake that you'll live with for the rest of your life.”40.Jim Chapman was injured in the workplace mainly because ________.A.he crossed the machineryB.the safety guard of the machinery was goneC.he was standing at the back of the tractorD.he didn't notice the PTO shaft41.In British farming industry,________.A.farmers take up a large part of working populationB.the number of injuries is bigger than what the public knowC.old machinery was not replaced in timeD.being a farmer is the most dangerous42.Judith thought ________ were (was) not acceptable.A.the injuries of farmersB.the high deaths for farmingC.her son's hope to work in agricultureD.farmers' retiring 5 or 10 years later43.From the whole text,we can see that Jim feels ________.A.regretful B.angryC.shocked D.confusedCOur culture has caused most Americans to assume not only that our language is universal but that the gestures we use are understood by everyone. We do not realize that waving goodbye is the way to summon a person from the Philippines to one's side,or that in Italy and some LatinAmer ican countries, curling the finger to oneself is a sign of farewell. Those private citizens who sent packages to our troops occupying Germany after World War Ⅱ and marked them GIFT to escape duty payments did not bother to find out that“Gift” means poison i n German. Moreover,we like to think of ourselves as friendly, yet we prefer to be at least 3 feet or an arm's length away from tins and Middle Easterners like to come closer and touch, which makes Americans uncomfortable. Our linguistic(语言的)and cultural blindness and the casualness with which we take notice of the developed tastes, gestures, customs and languages of other countries, are losing our friends, business and respect in the world.Even here in the United States,we make few concessions(让步) to the needs of foreign visitors. There are no information signs in four languages on our public buildings or monuments;we do not have multilingual (多语的) guided tours.Very few restaurant menus have translations, and multilingual waiters, bank clerks and policemen are rare. Our transportation systems have maps in English only and often we ourselves have difficulty understanding them. When we go abroad,we tend to stay in hotels and restaurants where English is spoken. The attitudes and information we pick up are conditioned by those natives—usually the richer—who speak English. Our business dealings,as well as the nation's diplomacy (外交),are conducted through interpreters. For many years,America and Americans could get by with cultural blindness and linguistic ignorance. After all,America was the most powerful country of the free world, the distributor(分发者)of needed funds and goods. But all that is past.American dollars no longer buy all good things, and we are slowly beginning to realize that our proper role in the world is changing.A 1979 Harris poll reported that 55 percent of Americans want this country to play a more significant role in world affairs; we want to have a hand in the important decisions of the next century, even though it may not always be the upper hand.44.It can be inferred that Americans being approached too closely by Middle Easterners would most probably________.A.stand still B.jump asideC.step forward D.draw back45.In countries other than their own, most Americans ________.A.are isolated by the local peopleB.are not well informed due to the language barrierC.tend to get along well with the nativesD.need interpreters in hotels and restaurants46.According to the author,Americans' cultural blindness and linguistic ignorance will________.A.affect their image in the new eraB.cut themselves off from the outside worldC.limit their role in world affairsD.weaken the position of the US dollar47.The author intends to make Americans realize that it is ________.A.dangerous to ignore their foreign friendsB.important to maintain their leading role in world affairsC.necessary to use several languages in public placesD.time to get familiar with other culturesDWe're in the middle of winter. It's cold and we're suffering from cold wind and rain. The sun, even when it does show its face,is setting at 4 p.m.It's no wonder people in the street look sad.But according to most of the research on the connection between weather and mood(情绪),they shouldn't be.Weather has little effect on mood. When you tell people this, though, they don't believe it.Most of us think the weather has quite a strong effect on our mood. Many think that the rain and cold weather dejects us and the sun and warmth cheers us up.So why don't we see this effect in the research? That's the question a new study by Klimstra et al.tries to answer with a group of young people and their mothers. In fact,Klimstra et al.found four different groups:1.Unaffected:about half the people in their study fell into this group. For these people it didn't matter that much whether it was raining or sunny, hot or cold, their mood was mostly unaffected.2.Summer lovers:here's the group you'd expect. For these people, their mood improved with less rain, more sun and higher temperatures(15% of young people and 30% of their mothers).3.Summer haters:here's the group of people you hear less about. These were the exact opposite of the summer lovers so they were happier when there was more rain, less sun and lower temperatures (27% of the young people and 12% of their mothers).4.Rain haters:this group's mood didn't change with the temperature, sunshine or the wind;they just hated the rain(8% of young people and 12% of their mothers). This helps explain why studies keep finding that weather doesn't have much effect on mood:it's because we're different and these differences are mostly being averaged out.48. It's found in the study that ________.A.weather has a strong effect on moodB.cold wind and rain makes us look sadC.the sun and warmth cheers us upD.mood is little affected by weather49. In which group people like dry and hot weather?A.Unaffected. B.Summer lovers.C.Summer haters. D.Rain haters.50.From the four different groups we can learn ________.A.about half the people belong to summer loversB.more than one third of the people are summer hatersC.few of young people and their mothers like the rainD.more young people are unaffected than rain haters51.What is the BEST title for the passage?A.Does the weather really affect your mood?B.Why do people feel sad in cold winter?C.How many different groups are there?D.Do different people have different mood?E(2013·安徽高考)Argentina in the late nineteenth century was an exciting place.Around 1870,it was experiencing an economic(经济的) boom, and the capital,Buenos Aires, attracted many people.Farmers,as well as a flood of foreigners from Spain and Italy, came to Buenos Aires seeking jobs. These jobs didn't pay well, and the people felt lonely and disappointed with their new life in the city.As the unhappy newcomers mixed together in the poor parts of the city, the dance known as the tango (探戈舞) came into being. At the beginning the tango was a dance of the lower classes. It was danced in the bars and streets. At that time there were many fewer women than men,so if a man didn't want to be left out,his only choice was to dance with another man so that he could attract the attention of the few available women.Gradually, the dance spread into the upper classes of Argentinean society and became more respectable. In Europe at this time, strong interest in dance from around the world was beginning. This interest in international dance was especially evident in Paris.Every kind of dance from ballet(芭蕾舞) to belly dancing could be found onthe stages of the Paris theaters. After tango dancers from Argentina arrived in Europe, they began to draw the interest of the public as they performed their exciting dance in cafes.Though not everyone approved of the new dance, saying it was a little too shocking, the dance did find enough supporters to make it popular. The popularity(流行)of the tango continued to grow in many other parts of the world.Soldiers who returned to the United States from World War Ⅰ brought the tango to North America. It reached Japan in 1926,and in 2003 the Argentinean embassy in Seoul hired a local tango dancer to act as a kind of dance ambassador, and promote tango dancing throughout South Korea.52.The origin of the tango is associated with ________.A.belly dancersB.American soldiersC.a Spanish cityD.the capital of Argentina53.Which of the following is true about the tango?A.It was created by foreigners from Spain and Italy.B.People of the upper classes loved the tango most.C.It was often danced by two males in the beginning.D.A dancer in Seoul became the Argentinean ambassador.54.Before World War Ⅰ,the tango spread to ________.A.America B.JapanC.France D.South Korea55.What can be the best title for the text?A.How to Dance the TangoB.The History of the TangoC.How to Promote the TangoD.The Modern Tango BoomⅣ.任务型阅读(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)Thirdgeneration mobile phones, known as 3G,are the next big step for the telecom industry.Data speed in 3G networks is much quicker than that in present technology. This means users can have highspeed Internet access and enjoy video and CDquality mus ic on their phones.“Mobile data is not a dream;it's not an option(选择) but a requirement,” said Len Lauer, head of a US communications company,Sprint PCS,at a 3G conferencein Bangkok earlier this month. With 3G,you can forget about text messages telling you yesterday's news;a 3G phone can receive video news programs, updated four times a day.Internet access will also be much quicker, making it easier to surf the Web on your phone than on your computer at home.Facetoface video callsDon't worry about getting lost.3G phones offer map services so you can find a new restaurant just by pressing a few keys on your handset. However, the most impressive part of 3G technology is video calling. With live twoway video communication, you can have facetoface talks with friends and many European countries have already launched the service. In May 2000 the US government issued five license to run 3G wireless services, while the first 3G phones arrived in Italy in March this year.International telecom companies can't wait to sell 3G in China, the world's largest mobile telecommunications market. But they will have to be patient. At the moment,China is working on testing its 3Gbased technologies, networks and services. This will be followed by a trial period before the phones can finally hit the shops.“We need to create a pool of 3G customers before the largescale commercial launch of the service,”said Fan Yunjun, marketing manager for Beijing Mobile.“We expect that the 3G licenses will be issued late next year.”Thirdgeneration mobile phones (3G mobile It's fun to come home. It looks the same. It smells the same. You'll realize what's changed is you. Home is where we can remember pain, love, and some other experiences: We parted here; My parents met here; I won three championships here.If I close my eyes, I can still have a clear picture in mind of my first home.I walk in the door and see a brown sofa surrounding a low glasstop wooden table. To the right of the living room is my first bedroom. It's empty, but it's where my earliest memories are. There is the dining room table where I celebrated birthdays, and where I cried on Halloween—when I didn't want to wear the skirt my mother made for me. I always liked standing on that table because it made me feel tall and strong. If I sit at this table,I can see my favorite room in the house,my parents' room. It is simple:a brown wooden dresser lines the right side of the wall next to a television and a couple of photos of my grandparents on each side. Their bed is my safe zone. I can jump on it anytime—waking up my parents if I am scared or if I have an important announcement that cannot wait until the morning.I'm lucky because I know my first home still exists. It exists in my mind and heart,on a physical property(住宅) on West 64th street on the western edge of Los Angeles. It is proof I lived, I grew, and I learned.Sometimes when I feel lost, I lie down and shut my eyes, and I go home. I know it's where I'll find my family, my dogs, and my belongings. I purposely leave the window open at night because I know I'll be blamed by Mom. But I don't mind, because I want to hear her say my name, which reminds me I'm home.31.Why does the author call her parents' bed her “safe zone” (Paragraph 3) ?A.It is her favorite place to play.B.Her needs can be satisfied there.C.Her grandparents' photos are lined on each side.D.Her parents always play together with her there.32.What can be learned from the passage?A.The old furniture is still in the author's first bedroom.B.The author can still visit her first physical home in Los Angeles.C.The author's favorite room in her first home is the dining room.D.Many people of the author's age can still find their first physical homes.33.Sometimes when she feels lost, the author will________.A.open the window at nightB.lie down in bed to have a dreamC.try to bring back a sense of homeD.go to Los Angeles to visit her mom34.What is the author's purpose of writing this passage?A.To express how much she is attached to her home.B.To declare how much she loves her first house.C.To describe the state of her family.D.To look back on her childhood.BFarmers are being told more needs to be done to stop them injuring at work. One in five British workplace deaths happens in agriculture even though farmers are only a small part of the working population.During the year 2010/11 there were 1,061 injuries in total and it is thought many more go unreported.Jim Chapman from Warwickshire had his arm torn off by farm machinery seven years ago when he was 23.“You don't realize how much you rely on your second arm until it's gone,”he said.He fell against a PTO shaft(传动轴),a spinning metal bar at the back of a tractor.“It catapulted(猛力掷出) me from one side of the machine to the other,”he said.“I landed on the flo or,minus all my clothing. My left arm had been ripped off.”He admits that the machinery was missing part of its proper safety guard.“But again,”he added,“it was a rushed day. There were a few machines that didn't work. Also,I was getting behind with the jobs.”Over the last 10 years, other industries that you'd think of as dangerous, like building or quarrying(矿采),have lowered the number of workplace deaths and injuries. In the farming industry though, deaths remain high with 34 deaths in 2010/11.Judith Hackitt, the chair of the Health and Safety Executive(HSE) says it is“not acceptable” that the accident statistics for farming are still high.“People in farming don't have minor(较小的) injuries. When they get injured,it's bad.”she said.“When I said to the National F armers' Union(NFU) that if I had sons I would not want them to work in agriculture,it really made them sit up and take notice.”There's a whole host of reasons why farming is as dangerous as it is.It is a very rough industry. Also,it's often because people are left alone. They could be young and inexperienced,or older people, who would have retired maybe 5 or 10 years ago in other industries.Jim wants others to learn from his experience.“Look at what you're doing before you go running in,”he said.“You could ma ke a mistake that you'll live with for the rest of your life.”35.Jim Chapman was injured in the workplace mainly because ________.A.he crossed the machineryB.the safety guard of the machinery was goneC.he was standing at the back of the tractorD.he didn't notice the PTO shaft36.In British farming industry,________.A.farmers take up a large part of working populationB.the number of injuries is bigger than what the public knowC.old machinery was not replaced in timeD.being a farmer is the most dangerous37.Judith thought ________ were (was) not acceptable.A.the injuries of farmersB.the high deaths for farmingC.her son's hope to work in agricultureD.farmers' retiring 5 or 10 years later38.From the whole text,we can see that Jim feels ________.A.regretful B.angryC.shocked D.confusedCOur culture has caused most Americans to assume not only that our language is universal but that the gestures we use are understood by everyone. We do not realize that waving goodbye is the way to summon a person from the Philippines to one's side,or that in Italy and some LatinAmerican countries, curling the finger to oneselfis a sign of farewell. Those private citizens who sent packages to our troops occupying Germany after World War Ⅱ and marked them GIFT to es cape duty payments did not bother to find out that“Gift” means poison in German. But all that is past.American dollars no longer buy all good things, and we are slowly beginning to realize that our proper role in the world is changing.A 1979 Harris poll reported that 55 percent of Americans want this country to play a more significant role in world affairs; we want to have a hand in the important decisions of the next century, even though it may not always be the upper hand.39.It can be inferred that Americans being approached too closely by Middle Easterners would most probably________.A.stand still B.jump asideC.step forward D.draw back40.In countries other than their own, most Americans ________.A.are isolated by the local peopleB.are not well informed due to the language barrierC.tend to get along well with the nativesD.need interpreters in hotels and restaurants41.According to the author,Americans' cultural blindness and linguistic ignorance will________.A.affect their image in the new eraB.cut themselves off from the outside worldC.limit their role in world affairsD.weaken the position of the US dollar42.The author intends to make Americans realize that it is ________.A.dangerous to ignore their foreign friendsB.important to maintain their leading role in world affairsC.necessary to use several languages in public placesD.time to get familiar with other culturesDWe're in the middle of winter. These were theexact opposite of the summer lovers so they were happier when there was more rain, less sun and lower temperatures (27% of the young people and 12% of their mothers).4.Rain haters:this group's mood didn't change with the temperature, sunshine or the wind;they just hated the rain(8% of young people and 12% of their mothers). This helps explain why studies keep finding that weather doesn't have much effect on mood:it's because we're different and these differences are mostly being averaged out.43. It's found in the study that ________.A.weather has a strong effect on moodB.cold wind and rain makes us look sadC.the sun and warmth cheers us upD.mood is little affected by weather44. In which group people like dry and hot weather?A.Unaffected. B.Summer lovers.C.Summer haters. D.Rain haters.45.From the four different groups we can learn ________.A.about half the people belong to summer loversB.more than one third of the people are summer hatersC.few of young people and their mothers like the rainD.more young people are unaffected than rain haters46.What is the BEST title for the passage?A.Does the weather really affect your mood?B.Why do people feel sad in cold winter?C.How many different groups are there?D.Do different people have different mood?E(2013·重庆高考)It is widely known that any English conversation begins with The Weather. Such a fixation with the weather finds expression in Dr. Johnson's famous comment that “When two English meet, their first talk is of weather.” Though Johnson's observation is as accurate now as it was over two hundred years ago, most commentators fail to come up with a convincing explanation for this English weatherspeak.Bill Bryson, for example, concludes that, as the English weather is not at all exciting, the obsession with it can hardly be understood. He argues that “To anoutsider, the most striking thing about the English weather is that there is not very much of it.” Simply, the reason is that the unusual and unpredictable weather is almost unknown in the British Isles.Jeremy Paxman, however, disagrees with Bryson, arguing that the English weather is by nature attractive. Bryson is wrong, he says, because the English preference for the weather has nothing to do with the natural phenomena. “The interest is less in the phenomena themselves, but in uncertainty.” According to him, the weather in England is very changeable and uncertain and it attracts the English as well as the outsider.Bryson and Paxman stand for common misconceptions about the weatherspeak among the English. Both commentators, somehow, are missing the point. The English weather conversation is not really about the weather at all. English weatherspeak is a system of signs, which is developed to help the speakers overcome the natural reserve and actually talk to each other. Everyone knows conversations starting with weatherspeak are not request s for weather data. Rather, they are routine greetings, conversation starters or the blank “fillers”. In other words, English weatherspeak is a means of social bonding.47.The author mentions Dr. Johnson's comment to show that________.A.most commentators agree with Dr. JohnsonB.Dr. Johnson is famous for his weather observationC.the comment was accurate two hundred years agoD.English conversations usually start with the weather48.What does the underlined word “obsession” most probably refer to?A.A social trend.B.An emotional state.C.A historical concept.D.An unknown phenomenon.49.According to the passage,Jeremy Paxman believes that________.A.Bill Bryson has little knowledge of the weatherB.there is nothing special about the English weatherC.the English weather attracts people to the British IslesD.English people talk about the weather for its uncertainty50.What is the author's main purpose of writing the passage?A.To explain what English weatherspeak is about.B.To analyse misconceptions about the English weather.C.To find fault with both Bill Bryson and Jeremy Paxman.D.To convince people that the English weather is changeable.Ⅳ.完成句子(共10小题;每小题2分,满分20分)51.An idea occured to me ________________ to finish the task.(team)我忽然想到了一个主意,我可以找一个同学来完成这项任务。

Dear Editor,
I’m writing to tell you about a discussion we have had about whether senior high school students should take physical exercise or not .There are too different opinions about it.55% of the students think they should take exercise every day, such as doing morning exercises, playing ping-pong and playing basketball, but should not take too much time. Taking exercise can build up one’s body and reduce disease. What’s more,Sports let their brains rest so that their revision will be more effective.
On the other hand, 45% believe taking exercise is a waste of time and tiring. After having sports, they are too excited for a long time to draw attention to their lessons. It’s likely to get hurt in sports.
Best wishes.
Yours,
Li Hua.。
