Mr. de Klerk said people will remember Mandela for the importance he placed on reconciliation(和解)—being able to reach a settlement between conflicting sides. He said their relationship was, in his words, “often stormy”, but he said they were“always able to come together at critical(关键的)moments. ”In the United States, President Barack Obama called Mandela an influential, brave and profoundly good human being. Mr. Obama said Mandela will be remembered for leaving a free South Africa at peace. “I am one of the countless millions who drew inspiration from Nelson Mandela’s life. My very first political action—the first thing I ever did that involved an issue, or a policy, or politics—was a protest against apartheid. I would study his words and his writings. ”In London, British Prime Minister David Cameron called Mandela a true global hero. In his words, a great light has gone out in the world.【文章大意】本文主要介绍了南非前总统曼德拉的去世及世界各国主要领导人对曼德拉的缅怀。

Britain’s long-term unemployed could be forced to carry out manual work or risk losing their welfare benefits under plans being put forward by the government. The U. S. -style scheme would see the long-term jobless ordered to take up four-week placements in order to get them used to having a full-time job.The idea is part of major reforms, due to be unveiled this week, to make cuts to Britain’s huge welfare bill, reduce dependency on benefits and weed out those earning money but not declaring it, papers said.“What we are talking about here is people who have not been used to working having both the opportunity and perhaps a bit more of a push as well, to experience the workplace from time to time. The vast majority of people in Britain will think that is the right thing to do. ”Foreign Secretary William Hague told BBC TV.Shortly after the Conservative-Liberal Democrat Union took power in May, Work and Pensions Secretary Iain Duncan Smith unveiled plans to simplify the complex web of benefits available to reduce errors and inefficiencies.Duncan Smith said the system had become regressive and was not giving people the right encouragement to work as many were financially better off unemployed.Under his plans, separate benefits for items such as housing, income support or disability will be replaced by a“universal credit”system whereby(靠那个)individual households would get a single welfare payment to ensure those in work would be better off.The Observer newspaper said that in return, long-term unemployed would be told to take up work placements of at least 30 hours a week for a four-week period. If they refuse or fail to complete the programme, their jobseekers’ allowance, worth 64. 30 pounds a week for those over 25, could be stopped for at least three months.【文章大意】由于英国的福利过高, 再加上近年来的经济危机造成的高失业率, 越来越多的英国人不愿再去劳心费力地工作, 干脆赖在家里向政府伸手要钱。

If you have a bad habit of losing things, a new device that can be connected to any item that you might lose may be the way to solve your problem. The Tile, a small square linked up to your iPhone or iPad via Bluetooth, lets you see how close you are to the missing item, within a 50-to150-foot range . If the item goes out of your phone’s 150-foot range, it can still be detected (发现) on other smartphones with the same app. When you log into the app on your phone, it shows you, with green bars that increase or decrease, how far away you are from the Tile. You can also program it to make a sound when you get close to the Tile. And you can link up your phone with up to ten Tiles. And if your lost item — a dog, for example, or a stolen bike —goes out of your own phone’s 150-foot Bluetooth range, you can set it as a “lost item”. If any of the phones with the Tile app comes within the range of your lost item, a message will be sent to your own phone, reminding you of its position. The Tile app also has the function to remember where it last saw your Tile, so that you can easily find where you left it.Since the Tiles use Bluetooth rather than GPS, they never run out of battery or need to be charged, and they last for one year before needing to be replaced. The app, which will come into the market this winter, works with iPhone 5S, iPhone 6, iPad Mini, iPad 3rd and 4th generation, and iPod 5th generation.1. The Tile app can help you .A. find your missing itemsB. use your phone more wiselyC. save your phone’s battery powerD. connect something to your phone2. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?A. The Tile needs to be charged after a year of use.B. One smartphone can only be linked up to one Tile.C. The Tile cannot work when linked up to a phone without Bluetooth.D. A missing item can’t be found if it goes out of the needed range.3. What does the second paragraph mainly tell us?A. What the Tile app is.B. How the Tile app works.C. The advantages of the Tile app.D. Why the Tile app was invented.4. Where does this passage probably come from?A. A science fiction novel.B. It is probably the strangest sport anyone has ever invented. And at first sight, it looks like the easiest. Competitorshave to do two things. The first is to stand still. Thesecond is to place their hands anywhere on the body of acar, and keep it there. This is where things start getting difficult. Lots of people are doing the same thing. And the winner of the“handathon〞contest is the person who can carry on doing it for the longest time. That person gets to own the car.It still seems to be an easy thing to do. At the beginning it is. Anyone can stand still. But when the contest has been going for four or five days, standing still seems like the most difficult job in the world. And keeping the hand in place over this time becomes an act of serious attention. After a few days, the hand seems to belong to someone else—someone who wants to go home and get some sleep.Competitors are allowed to take a five-minute break every hour to eat, drink or do whatever else is necessary. No one is allowed to lean on the car for support. Winners need to be able to show great powers of attention. They also need to be able to develop special skills.Maybe the popularity of the handathon is due to the fact that it is not necessary to be a trained athlete to enter. Entrants in the Longview handathon certainly don’t seem to do much preparation. Most say they will prepare by“getting lots of sleep〞. Others say they will“eat healthy food〞or“pray for success〞. The whole event gives ordinary people the chance to do something interesting and win something in the end.Handathons are competitions, but there is little rivalry(敌对)between competitors. They help each other out and keep each other’s spirits up. People wh o drop out early return with food, drink and encouragement.【文章大意】双手放在车身任何部位, 静立不动, 你能坚持多久? 本文介绍了一项看似简单, 实如此类似于马拉松的运动形式“handathon〞。

English as a Foreign LanguageWho taught you to speak English? Your parents, while you were a young child? Your teachersat school? Perhaps even the BBC as a grown-up. Whoever it was, somehow you have developed an understanding of what is rapidlybecoming a truly global language. There are now about 376 million people who speak English astheir first language, and about the same number who have learnt itin addition to their mother tongue. There are said to be one billion people learning English now and about 80% of the information on the Internet is in English. Is this a good thing, or a bad thing? Should we celebrate the fact that more and more of us can communicate, using a common language, across countries and cultures? Or should we worry about the dangers of―mono-culturalism‖, a world in which we all speak the same language, eat the same food and listen to the same music?Does it matter if an increasing number of people speak the same language? On the contrary, I would have thought-although I have never accepted the argument that if only we all understood each other better, there would be fewer wars. Ask the people of India(where many of them speak at least some English)and Pakistan(the same situation with India). . .If we all speak English, will we then all start eating McDonald’s burgers? Surely not. If English becomes more dominant(占主导地位的), will it kill other languages? I doubt it. When I travel in Africa or Asia, I am always surprised by how many people can speak not only their own language but often one or more other related languages, as well as English and perhaps some French or German as well. When we discussed this on Talking Point a couple of years ago, we received a wonderfully poetic email from a listener in Ireland. ―The English language is a beautiful language. Maybe it’s like a rose, ‖he said. ―But who would ever want their garden just full of rose? ‖Well, I love roses, and I think they make a beautiful addition to any garden. But the way I see it, just by planting a few roses, you don’t necessarily need to pull out everything else. If more and more people want to plant English roses, that’s fine by me.【文章大意】作者以独特的视角分析了英语的发展前景和人们的种种顾虑。

Something that has always interested me about Abraham Lincoln is, not surprisingly, his sense of humor. As far as I can tell, he’s the first American President to have one. That’s because the term“sense of humor”really wasn’t in common usage until the eighteen sixties and seventies. In the eighteen forties and fifties, it was called“the sense of the ridiculous”, and didn’t have the positive connotations(隐含意义)that“sense of humor”has to day. Back then, what was ridiculous was what invited ridicule(讥笑). Funniness and cruelty went hand in hand. Of course, they still do a lot of arm-in-arm walking in our day as well.Lincoln’s humor was very different because, for one thing, it was actually“humor”as what the word meant in his time. We don’t make the distinction between“wit(风趣)”and“humor”anymore; but in the nineteenth century people did. Wit was unpleasant and offensive while humor was pleasant and sympathetic. It’s the difference we note now when we distinguish between“laughing with”and“laughing at”. Lincoln was much more about“laughing with”than“laughing at”. And when“laughing at”, it was often himself he was teasing. In the famous Lincoln-Douglas debate, when Douglas accused Lincoln of being two-faced, Lincoln replied, referencing his plain looking, “Honestly, if I were two-faced, would I be showing you this one? ”And, in a way, Lincoln’s face itself tells us much about his sense of humor. You can comb through thousands of photographs of politicians, soldiers, and the like from Lincoln’s time and not find a single smile.True, the long exposures(曝光)required for photographs of that time made smiling difficult. Yet Lincoln alone, as far as I can tell, overcame that difficulty.Inter estingly, while having a sense of humor, or at least the appearance of one provided by comedy writers, has become a necessary characteristic for an American President in our time, in the nineteenth century, too much humor was considered aproblem. And that was the case for Lincoln. A journalist covering the Lincoln-Douglas debate commented that“I could not take a real personal liking to the man, owing to an inborn weakness for which he was even then notorious and so remained during his great public career, he was extremely fond of jokes, anecdotes, and stories. ”【文章大意】说起第16任美国总统亚伯拉罕·林肯, 很多人会立即想起他对解放黑奴和维护美利坚联邦完整所做出的巨大贡献, 想起他能言善辩的口才和妙语连珠的演讲, 但却很少有人知道, 林肯的“幽默感”也开创了一个新时代。

1. We can infer from Paragraph 2 that .A. the American President could influence the use of EnglishB. the term“sense of humor”wasn’t invented until the 1860sC. what is funny to someone might be offensive to someone elseD. the concept of humor remains the same despite the passing of time【解析】选C。

根据该段中“didn’t have the positive connotations t hat‘sense of humor’has today(没有今天幽默感所具有的积极的隐含意义)”和“Back then, what was ridiculous was what invited ridicule. (在当时, 好笑的事就是招致讥笑的事。

)”可知C项正确。

2. The underlined words“this one”in Paragraph 4 refer to.A. Lincoln’s unattractive faceB. Lincoln’s sense of hum orC. the debate they were havingD. cruelty that went with funniness【解析】选A。

3. We rarely see people from Lincoln’s time wear a smile in their photo s because .A. being humorous was considered inappropriateB. they found it quite funny to smile before the cameraC. not smiling for photographs was the fashionD. photography technology then was not advanced【解析】选D。

4. What might the writer think of the journalist covering the Lincoln-Douglas debate?A. His comment accurately reflected his time.B. He created a false picture of Lincoln.C. He was prejudiced and self-centered.D. He was brave to p oint out Lincoln’s weakness.【解析】选A。
