Sometimes we need war just for peace
Ever since the human beings appeared, wars had almost hardly stopped. Benjamin Franklin once said “There never was a good war or a bad peace” in 1773. He thought that people get killed and houses get destroyed during wars, but people live happily and peacefully not being in a state of anxiety during peaces.
But I hardly agree with this opinion which seems shortsighted. Nothing is 100 percent good or bad. There are righteous wars which can save poor people, prevent someone’s horrible ambition or improve the public society. Meanwhile, there are dangerous peaces which can do harm to some poor people, connive someone’s horrible ambition or make the human society retrogress.
When the World WarⅠended, a comment on it said “This is not the end of all the wars. Not only because the crises of danger lurks in its hurried ending, but also it left a horrible message for humans that wars make revolutions possible, also make ambitions realizable.” So a careerist Adolf Hitler, stepped on the stage of history. In his command, the Germany Army occupied most of the Europe rapidly. Most horribly, he started a mass murder of Jews and some other races. In this case, some countries, like the US, the UK, France, etc. leagued together to fight against Hitler’s Nazi Army. This is how World War Ⅱhappened. At the end, the western alliance won the war. They connived Hitler’s ambition of destroying the rule of world, liberated millions of people, and make the world peaceful again by made a new world rule which brings more than 6 decades of peace to human race. Which can be easily discovered, the war Hitler started is bad while the war the western alliance started to fight against Hitler for peace is good. So, there really are good wars, which are righteous. Righteous wars can make the power of love wake up in noble countries, and most importantly, wars are necessary and reasonable for people who are losing hopes.
Speaking of bad peace, let’s move back to the period when the World War Ⅰended. At that time, to punish and weaken the force of the Allies, especially German, a convention of peace called the Treaty of Versailles was signed. After this convention, a seeming peace was brought to the Europe. It’s called a “seeming” peace because as a result of the Treaty of Versailles, German is punished and weakened seriously, which made a feeling of despair enveloped the whole German. This feeling promoted a horrible force of revolt called Nazi, which spelled disaster for humans soon after. This kind of peace for only 20 years didn’t bring a real peace, but another worse war.
Another example of bad peace is just happened after Hitler was in power. That is in 1930s, when Hitler is prepared to go to war to achieve his territorial ambitions. The other countries, which still had fantasies of peace, didn’t trying to stop him, even made a secret treaty with him to sacrifice the Sudetenland of Czechoslovakia and protect themselves when Hitler had occupied Austria and trying to attack Czechoslovakia. This indeed protected some major countries in Europe from being in wars, but the peace didn’t last for long. Yet, when the western alliance started to try to stop Hitler, his Nazi Army had already be really big and powerful.
No wars are completely bad and no peaces are completely good. We love peace, but sometimes we need wars to bring it to us. And when peace is seriously necessary, we need a decisive war to make it true. If you doubt that, think about how the War on Terrorism makes the US be deep into the mire.。
