Before the bridge was built, squirrels had to avoid traffic to and from the Park Plaza office building. Many times, Peters and others who worked in and near Park Plaza witnessed squirrels being run over. One day Peters found a dead squirrel with a nut still in its mouth, and that day's coffee break discussion turned into squirrel safety. The group of businessmen cooked up the squirrel bridge idea and formed a committee to ask the blessing of the City Council (市政会).The Council approved, and Councilwoman Bess LaRiviere named the bridge "Nutty Narrows."After architects designed the bridge, Amos Peters and Bill Hutch started Construction, They built the 60-foot bridge from aluminum and lengths of fire hose (消防水带). It cost 1,000.It didn't take long before reports of squirrels using the bridge started. Squirrels were even seen guiding their young and teaching them the ropes. The story was picked up by the media, and Nutty Narrowsbecame know in newspapers all over the world. In 1983, after 20 years of use, Peters took down the worn-out bridge. Repairs were made and crosspieces were replaced. The faded sign was repainted and in July 1983, hundreds of animal lovers attended the completion ceremony of the new bridge.Peters died in 1984, and a ten-foot wooden squirrel sculpture was placed near the bridge in memory of its builder and his devotion to the project.66. Yet any carelessness on an applicant’s part can draw a negative reaction from readers. Each company or organization usually uses its own specially designed form that, although it generally asks for the same basic information, may vary in detail. Therefore the suggestions below apply mainly to the approach you should take rather than suggest what you should write.*When visiting future employers, always carry your personal data record with you so that you can readily search for details such as dates, telephone numbers, and other useful information.*Treat every application form as though it is the first one you are completing—write carefully and neatly.*Use words that describe the responsibility and different aspects of each job you have held rather than list only the duties you performed.*Particularly describe social activities that show your involvement in the community, or activities in which you held a teaching or coaching role.*Pay particular attention of there is a section on the form that asks you to comment on how your education and past experience have especially prepared you for the position.Think this through very carefully before you write so that what you say shows a natural progression from past experience to the job you are applying for. If you can , and if they fit naturally , add a few words to demonstrate (证明)how the position fits your overall career plan.70.The first sentence of the passage means that __________.A.you may have to fill in a long application formB.the filling up of an application form takes much timeC.one may have to fill in many application forms before one gets a jobD.application forms should be filled carefully, with no misleading71. Although all application forms demand the same basic information, .A.different companies may have different requirementsB.different companies may take the same attitude towards themC.application may be required to answer all the questions in detailD.application may have to send in the forms by person72.Which of the following statements is TRUE?A.Your personal data record is more important than the interview itself.B.You should put all your personal data record in the application form.C.Your personal data record will be of much help to your interview.D.You should write your personal data as clearly and neatly as possible.73. Which of the following would be the best TITLE of the passage?A.Importance of Application Forms B.How to Fill in an Application FormC.Job and Its Application Form D.Nature of Application FormsCACB(C)Almost a decade after the hit Finding Nemo made clownfish seem totally warm and lovable, environmentalists are now looking for a real-life sequel: Saving Nemo.In the United States, a request has been made to extend the protections of the Endangered Species Act to marine species including the clownfish. But before you start shedding tears for Nemo and his buddies, keep in mind that this request is not based on any evidence of a decline in the clownfish population. Instead, what has sparked concern is the worsening health of coral reefs, which more than one million aquatic species including the clownfish depend on to thrive, even survive. In ways it makes more sense to move to protect a species when its habitat declines rather than its actual population. The most important mission of the Endangered Species Act is the protection of species’ habitats; without their habitats, there’s almost no hope of saving endangered animals, except perhaps in a zoo.Earlier this year, alarming news came about the world’s largest coral reef system, Australia’s Great Barrier Reef (GBR, 大堡礁). A study has shown the Reef is in sharp decline, with half of its coral cover gone in the past 27 years.Katharina Fabricius, an Australian coral reef ecologist co-authoring the study, has been diving and working on the GBR since 1988—and has watched the decline. ―There are still a lot of fish ... but not the same color and diversity as in the past,‖ she said. The study team used information from more than 2,000 surveys to determine the rate of decline between 1985 and 2012. That overall 50-percent decline, they estimate, is a yearly loss of about 3.4 percent of the Reef. If the trend continued, the coral cover could halve again by 2022.Several main factors are responsible for the decline, the study found. Intense tropical cyclones (热带气旋), believed to be fueled by global warming, have caused massive damage to reefs in the central and southern parts of the Reef. Meanwhile, population explosions of the coral-consuming crown-of-thorns starfish (长棘海星) have affected coral populations along the length of the Reef. Two severe coral bleaching (变白) events, caused by ocean warming, have also had major damaging impacts in northern and central parts of the GBR.74. A request has been made in the United States to save the clownfish because ________.A. it is a totally warm and lovable speciesB. the health of its habitat is worseningC. its population has dropped sharplyD. few clownfish can be found in zoos75. Research found that everyvisitor to the pyramids released an average of 20 grams of water vapor through sweat, which slowly caused damage to the walls inside. The project, which cost around $4 million, included cleaning the walls of the tombs and strengthening them, as well AS removing graffiti left by previous visitors.
