英语是新加坡的官方语言，但神奇的是很多英美人到新加坡之后，会发现完全听不懂新加坡当地人所讲的英文。
即便是在大学任职的教授，也经常听不懂那些具有新加坡口音的学生的课堂提问。
因为新加坡英语除官方使用的标准英语之外，还有民间使用的被俗称为Singlish的新加坡式英语。
有一个段子，说的是某新加坡女人用英语向别人介绍自己的家庭：“ I am dirty, my husband is dirty too”,意思是我30岁，我丈夫32岁。
一些中国人刚到新加坡的时候，也会不习惯新加坡人把three说成tree，把thin说成tin，但是听过几天以后就慢慢地习惯了。
新加坡英语其实是很规范的，虽然并不符合英美标准。
