The Review Writing of《This is Water》The author, David Foster Wallace, was considered by many to be one of the finest writers of his generation. He only gave one speech in public in all his life, in which he talked about his view of life. The speech happened in a commencement of Kenyon College in 2005. Now, the widely distributed video has been into a thin book, which name is “this is water”.According to Wallace's view, the water was on behalf of the most obviously, the most important reality, but it was difficult to see or talk about; and “the same experience for different people may mean something completely different”, because everyone had a different “default settings” and a different way from the experience in the construction of meaning. Therefore, the ideal of liberal education was to make people out of this self center, learning to “how to think” and “thinking”control. Wallace then cut to the usual humor and plain philosophy from the contemporary urban life, pointing out the importance of maintaining vigilance and consciousness. At the same time, we should be free to choose the way of looking at things. At the beginning of the speech, Wallace talked a story about the fish, and it is pointed out that “the most obvious, ubiquitous, important realities are often the hardest to see and talk about”.In our daily life, we tend to think that we are the absolute center of the natural, justlike our default-setting. But most, we tend to automatically determine the thing, in fact, is completely wrong, even be fooled. Therefore in front of fact, we should learn to choose and think deeply. Then Wallace cited an example of the story of shopping in the supermarket. Just as our natural default-setting, we may think that traffic jams and crowded aisles and long checkout lines are pissed and miserable experience. When we think like this, we are operating on the automatic, unconscious belief that we are the center of the world, so that we feel the most boring and the most frustrating part in the adult world. However, if we changed our method of thinking, we may feel the difference of the things and make other choices. But doing like this is hard, needs will and mental effort. If we want to feel a meaningful and sacred experience instead of a crowed, loud, slow situation, the only thing we should do is to decide what to worship. We have the right to decided what to worship, but there are different kinds of freedom. The real freedom includes attention, and awareness, and displaying. In order to achieve this freedom, we should keep reminding ourselves “This is water” constantly. But it is hard to maintain awareness and activity in the adult world; we should keep study from now on.

Review1-this is water

Review1-this is water

Review---This is WaterIn the beginning of the article, the author told a story about fish and water and raised a question about “how is water”, which aroused people’s thinking. Water is one of the most common things, but it is hard to talk about and to answer what the water is. Though the short story, the author pointed out that the most obvious, ubiquitous, important realities are often the ones that are the hardest to see and talk about. Then he chose some concrete examples to support his argument. The author tried to prove his idea through the following aspects. Firstly, he said the stuff that people tend to be automatically certain of might totally be wrong and deluded. Just as the example of thinking you were the center of the universe. Next, people who could adjust their natural default-setting were often described as being “well adjusted”. In addition, learning how to think meant learning how to exercise some control over how and what you thought. Then he set a long example of describing an office worker’s feelings after a whole day’s work, as well as some other annoying things on the way home. This story aimed to tell the readers that in many cases, people could see one problem from different angles. And the result depended on what you chose and how you were going to try to see it.There is one point that touches me most----stay alert and attentive from our natural default settings. Learning how to think is a good habit of a lifetime. Nowadays, everyone is accustomed to rely on the internet. Indeed, there is a great deal of information online. If we have any problem, we may turn to baidu or google for help. We should be proud of how intelligent we human being are. But is it really good for us? In this information age, it seems people have no time thinking; it seems people have forgotten how to think. So someone says this is a best era, but also a worst era. Individually, I convince the power of thinking. No matter how old you are and no matter how complicated the social environment is, we should keep thinking.。

This is water review读后感

This is water review读后感

What is the “Real Freedom”—Review Of “This is Water ”Before i tell you the true meaning of “real freedom” in my perspective, i shall introduce you something about the author—David Foster Wallace, who gave the only speech of his life in the commencement speech to the 2005 graduating students at Kenyon College, and conveyed his life attitude towards us. And from my own feeling after reading this passage, there are some chemical reaction on my world view and view of life. Especially in the understanding of what is the “real freedom”.When I first read this passage , I just thought the passage the author write want to tell us the daily life of every common people. Each of us have his or her own annoyance day in and day out. So i certainly don’t understand what the author really want to tell us practically. With the question ,i read it again. After i read the passage second times ,i know the central theme of this passage is thinking, but what is the different is that the author’s opinion is “T he choice of what to think about” . In the beginning of the passage ,the author used an example of two young fish swimming along in the water to tell us that the most obvious, ubiquitous, important realities are often the ones that the hardest to see and talk about. As the author said everything in our own immediate experience supports us deep belief that our-selfare the absolute center of the universe; the realist, most vivid and important person in existence. We rarely think about this sort of natural, basic self-centered because it’s so socially repulsive. But it’s pretty much the same for all of us. It is our default setting, hard-wired into our boards at birth. So in my opinion, from the current life situation of every common person, we can never be difficult to find out that what the author said is true, but why we as students are also be so self-centered, finally i find the answer, which is we are simply teach our student how to think rather than learn how to exercise some control over how and what you think. It means being conscious and aware enough to choose what we pay attention to and to choose how we construct meaning from experience.if we cannot exercise this kind of choice in adult life, we will be totally hosed. The author also gave us an example of one common person’s life ,and from those phenomenons, we can see what we are , we will easily find that most of us affected by our default-setting. In the face of disturbing things, they often show anxiety, irritability and unwillingness But when we choose another obviously way to think about these kinds of situations. For example it’s not impossible that some of these people in SUV’s have been in horrible auto accidents in the past and now find driving so traumatic that their therapist has all but order them to get a huge, heavy SUV so they can feel safe enough to pare this two think mode ,we will easily get a conclusion that the world in your sight just depend on what you want to consider. If you’ve really learned how to think, how to pay attention, then you will know you have another options. The only thing that’s capital-T True is that you get to decide how you’re going to try to see it.Thisis the freedom of a real education, of learning how to be well-adjusted—You get to consciously decide what has meaning and what doesn’t. You get to decide what to worship.and this is what the real freedom..The really important kind of freedom involves attention and awareness and discipline, and being able truly to care about other people. The real freedom does not lie in the excessive wealth, comfort and personal freedom. The real freedom is not the unconscious, the inertia of thinking, fight at outrance competition. And the most important thing is that to be free to choose what tothink, choose how to think. Finally i use a word said by net friend to end my review, now that the toilet is what you have to brush, were happy to brush or fighting with himself, the option in you. What kind of philosophical words it is ! I am totally agree with this view, the initiative is in our hands, and the choice is in our hands, all we have to do is to think about how to stand on the other's side to think, to make choices. And this is for the real freedom. If everyone wants to do this,to think in this way, I believe the world will become more and more beautiful.。

This is water

David Wallace《This is water》有感水是什么?

Day in day out,夜以继日地生活,看起来很容易的事情,其实在现实中已经是让人难以背负的重量。

Freedom,

this is water译文:这是水

Water is an essential resource for our daily lives. We use water for various purposes such as drinking, cooking, cleaning, and bathing. It is something that we often takefor granted, but its importance cannot be overstated.Firstly, water is crucial for our health and well-being. We need to drink an adequate amount of water every day to stay hydrated and maintain proper bodily functions. Without enough water, we can experience dehydration, which can lead to fatigue, headaches, and even more serious health issues. Additionally, water is essential for cooking and preparing food. It helps to dissolve and distribute the flavors of ingredients, making our meals more enjoyable.Secondly, water plays a vital role in maintaining cleanliness and hygiene. We use water to wash our hands, brush our teeth, and take showers or baths. These dailyrituals help to keep us clean and prevent the spread of germs and diseases. Moreover, water is used in laundry and dishwashing, ensuring that our clothes and dishes are clean and safe to use.Furthermore, water is essential for various industries and agriculture. Many industries rely on water for manufacturing processes, cooling systems, and energy production. Without water, these industries would not be able to function properly. In agriculture, water is necessary for irrigation, enabling the growth of crops and ensuring food security. Without water, our agricultural systems would collapse, leading to food shortages and higher prices. In conclusion, water is a precious resource that is indispensable in our daily lives. A Review of This is Water
Do you really know what our life is? What you will be like in the future? What is most important to you? And perhaps you will get something from the article of David Foster Wallace.
Here is a review of the commencement speech given by David Foster Wallace to the 2005 graduating class at Kenyon College named “This is Water”. Maybe the water is the environment of our life. In this speech, as the author said he is not a wise old fish and he didn’t tell us what we should do or what we are supposed to think. He just told us the experience of his own life, what the world is like before us and what we can do to live a satisfactory life, to make ourselves alive. Maybe the sentences above confused you that this speech is boring or preaching. But as one of the most famous commencement speeches, it is far from tedious. The author is a famous writer with several popular novels. In the speech, you can feel the ideas and thoughts from a man who swims in the water of life for over twenty years than we.
There are some humorous, meaningful sentences and full of parallel sentences. But as a speech, the most important part is whether it is interesting or attractive. So, the author here focuses a lot on a living example. He put up an example to tell us what “day in and day out” really means. It is such a part involves boredom, routine and petty frustration. It is an average day and you are tired after nine or ten hours’ hard work. Of course, you want to have a good supper, relax yourself and hit the rack early. But then you find no food at home, so you have to drive to the supermarket after your work now. And then you will find nothing is on your side. The crowded streets, the crowded aisles and the store is noisy, fluorescently lit. What’s worse is that there are full of slow old people, the spacey people and the ADHD kids in the supermarket. Finally, when you get everything ready, there is an unbelievable long checkout line waiting for you. Of course, the way back home is also a terrible journey. So do you want this day in and day out? Certainly not. But what if this is the situation you have to face? Will you be mad and feel meaningless? Now the author told us to think different, to be conscious. In a different way, we could be inspired. We should know
our aims, be aware of what is important to us and have something to worship, to follow all around your life. It is nothing to do with others, it’s totally about you. You can have a positive choice and stay conscious.
As far as I am concerned, I get a lot from it. As an individual person, all of us are different. For the future social life, we should be more conscious and independent. We can turn to others, but we should have our own decisions. Maybe something is not right or agrees with you. You are supposed to practice and have your own way. Also you should have your idol, your faith that you will follow in your whole life. Just like Russell, the longing for love, the search for knowledge and unbearable pity for the suffering of mankind had governed all his life. It is important to have something to worship. And as the author said “It is about simple awareness—awareness of what is so real and essential, so hidden in plain sight all around us”.。
