论 反叛 犹太传统的美国当代作家菲力普 罗思徐崇亮(南昌大学外国语学院,江西南昌 330047)摘 要:罗思是一直活跃在文坛的美国犹太文学代表作家。
但是,美国主流文学并不认为他是个具有强烈的犹太意识倾向的作家,原因就在于他的作品所表露出来的 反叛 精神,而这种所谓的 反叛 却是所有犹太作家面对 同化 或实现 美国梦 的困惑,也是他们从少数话语的角度对自己的特殊身份和品质的确认。

罗思是犹太移民的后裔,祖父母是讲意第绪语的奥地利 匈牙利移民。
1933年,他出生在新泽西州的纽瓦克,出生地及其周围的犹太人环境成了他文学创作的源泉。
同是纽瓦克人的著名文学批评家莱斯利 菲德勒曾说过,在罗思身上, 纽瓦克终于找到了自己的桂冠诗人 一个粗鄙、滑稽、敏锐、悲惨而又肮脏的作家,一如这座城市本身 。
从这段评语里,我们可以看出当时犹太知识阶层对罗思的基本定性,既承认他的文学才情,又诟病他对犹太传统的反叛。
当初罗思对人们称其为犹太作家也很不满意,他只承认自己 是个犹太人,但是不写犹太书 [2]。
他这种讳言可能与当时犹太人追求同化即实现美国梦的时尚有关。
