2018-2019学年度高中英语(人教版)选修六Unit 5 The power of nature reading课时作业(7)

Unit 5 The power of nature reading课时作业一、阅读理解A★★★★☆The bad condition of the economy has us all thinking about ways that we can make a living. Why not start by getting creative?Consider some little-known careers that will ensure that you stay competitive and look forward to going to work every morning. Here are several cool careers that you can choose from today. In such a busy world, more and more people carry psychological wounds, and they all need someone to talk to and need to let out their pressure. Psychiatrists who provide mental healing and psychological consultation can help them learn selfcontrol. People doing that kind of job can not only make people with psychological problems improve their life quality and work efficiently, but also make themselves gain a high salary. Using data from the past and present, futurists study how the present will develop into possible future and how humans will adapt to the technological, political, environmental and sociological changes. And they work as advisers for companies and governments, but we can regard their judgments as reference, and can't completely rely on them. We still need to consider the fact. This kind of career requires a college degree in arts or business.Image consultants advise people how to leave perfect impressions on others—through appearance, dressing up,ways of speaking, behavior and communication skills. Following the advice, these people can get ahead in their careers and social life, and strengthen their self-confidence. You can do this job even though you don't have a college degree. Many organizations, like the Training Institute School for this career in New York City, offer courses in color analysis, choosing clothes and style analysis, personal shopping and so on.Life coaches love talking to people, figuring out what makes them seem not very perfect and making plans to help them succeed in their jobs and personal life. They communicate with customers by meeting in person or over the phone on a regular basis and listen to customers' requirements, then set goals and monitor the progress. They can help you own a wonderful life. So try to choose a rising, challenging and developing career from now on.1. What can you learn from the passage?A. Psychiatrists can help those under heavy pressure.B. The futurists can predict what will happen in the future.C. To be an image consultant,.D. 2018-2019学年人教版高中英语选修六检测:Unit 5 Section 3

Unit 5Section ⅢⅠ.阅读理解Warm weather brought by El Nin~o has had mixed effects on animals in usually snowy places in North America, including New England, according to an Associated Press article. Some animals seem to benefit from having a chance to gather more food before winter, and from expending less energy in daily survival mode. Others, like snowshoe hares, are put at center stage in predators'(捕食者) view when they lack snow for disguising their white fur—not a good thing for them, of course.Black bears, on the other hand, have been keeping busy gathering nuts and apples, when they would normally have settled into their winter homes by now.Vermont and Massachusetts officials have asked residents to wait till snow falls to take out their bird feeders for the sake of safety, the article said.“We suggest waiting for 6 or more inches of snow that lasts before taking out your bird feeders, especially if you have been visited in the past by bears or if there are sightings of bears in your neighborhood,”Forrest Hammond, V ermont Fish and Wildlife's bear biologist, said in the article.“Due to lack of snow and frozen ground, birds are able to seek food in fields and forests for their natural foods.”Snow amounts can also determine how comfortable bears are and how quickly they consume their accumulated fat during hibernation (冬眠), noted Hammond in the article. This is because snow covers and traps them in their winter homes, and also hides them from predators.

AGlobal warming is the process of earth’s atmosphere heating up.Over the last 100 years, the average temperature of earth’s atmosphere has gone up 1 degree Fahrenheit. The weather has not changed exactly the same way in every area of the planet. But scientists think that the rise in average temperature is already affecting the earth’s climate. Many scientists now believe that global warming is caused by cutting down trees, producing more trash, and polluting the environment and so on. Many scientists believe that the biggest cause of global warming is new human technologies that release greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. The greenhouse effect is not new. Certain gases in the atmosphere, like carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide and methane, make it hard for heat energy to go into space. In the past, the climate didn’t change much because nature produced just the right amount of greenhouse gases to deal with it. Today, most scientists are pretty sure that the rising tempera ture can’t be blamed on nature. Ever since the industrial revolution in the 1700s, humans have relied on machines for daily life. And many of those machines give off a lot of greenhouse gases. An increase in the release of greenhouse gases from human activities is throwing nature off balance. The climate is a very complicated thing, but many scientists agree that the rising atmospheric temperature has already damaged the environment. Sheets of ice, called glaciers, are melting in Antarctica and other parts of the globe. As glaciers break off and melt into the oceans, they are adding warm water to the oceans and causing the sea level to rise.Over the past 100 years, the sea level has risen 6~8 inches around the world. That means land along the coasts is beginning to disappear under water. Bigger and warmer oceans are also adding to other weather problems caused by pollution in the atmosphere. Some places have received more rain, others have had bigger storms and a few areas in the world have experienced unusual droughts.【语篇概述】本文主要讲述了全球变暖的原因及影响。

课后阅读训练十七Unit 5Period 1Ⅰ. 阅读理解ADuke Ellington(1899—1974)may be America’s greatestcomposer. He led an orchestra, played the piano and composedover 2, 000 pieces of music.Duke began his life as Edward Kennedy Ellington in Washington, D. C. He was nicknamed by a classmate who admired him. This nickname was proper for Duke because of his elegant and proud manners. Even as a child, Duke had fans.Duke’s parents got him in piano lesso ns when he was in primary school. Duke was very afraid of his lessons and preferred to play baseball instead. He grew bored with practising and gave up his lessons. Duke didn’t become interested in learning the piano again until he was a teenager.Duke often joked that he learned to play the piano to attract girls. While washing dishes for his summer job, Duke met a waiter who invited him to go and see ragtime(an early form of jazz)pianist, Harvey Brooks. Brooks played ragtime in a way that did not follow the rules of classical piano music—he had freedom to change the rules and express himself more freely. Duke discoveredthat he wanted to make his own music too and then he taught himself how to play the piano like Harvey Brooks. He practised until his fingers could fly and even arranged melodies as he played.Soon Duke began playing for his high school dances. When he was 19, he started playing at parties and dance halls.Duke then moved to New York. There he played in different jazz clubs, saloons and dance halls. Soon he was leading his own band, the Washingtonians at the Kentucky Club, located in Times Square. In 1927, after giving a performance at the Cotton Club, he began to produce sophisticated(高水平的)arrangements of his own. He toured the world with his orchestra and composed thousands of songs. Duke led his orchestra until his death.【语篇概述】本文主要讲的是美国著名作曲家Duke Ellington(艾灵顿公爵)的生平。

The whole day, we walked around the countryside, and every now and then, our uncle put stones in our bags. We were a bit surprised that he also took some stones out from our bags at times, but figured he had just found better samples than the ones we already had.Still, when we reached the house in the late afternoon, we wereexhausted. The backpacks were so heavy that we gave a big sigh of relief when we put them on the ground. Yet our uncle’s backpack was half-empty.“Why did you give us so many stones? ”we asked.“I didn’t. You did, ”he said, waiting for a while before continuing. “You did not know it, but I made you go through a little attitude test today. ”“What do you mean an‘attitude test’? ”we wanted to know.“It is something someone once did to me—and I shall always remember it. You see, I listened to every word you said. And whenever you complained about anyone or anything, I added a stone to your bags. And whenever you talked about something with an attitude of gratitude and positive thinking, I took out a stone. And now lo ok at your backpacks. ”We did. They were full.“I hope you remember this little attitude test. You see, your negative thoughts are like stones. You carry them in your mind just like those stones in a backpack. The more negative thoughts you have, the heavier your mind is. A positive thought, however, cancels out a negative one. So look at those bags and start paying attention to what you say and how you say things. ”This little lesson was one of the most important I ever had. And I remember my uncle with great love for teaching us one of the most important lessons in life—the power of attitude.【语篇概述】本文是记叙文。
