Travel alone or travel with a companionWhen it comes to a traveling way, different people will offer different opinions. Some people like to travel alone, while others prefer to travel with a companion. Of course every one has different considerations for his preference. Traveling alone one can enjoy more freedom. The traveler can arrange his tour as he wishes. Without the trouble of compromising with others. Morever, traveling alone tends to bring the traveler unexpected surprises, such as making a new friend and enjoying different scenery.Compared with traveling alone, traveling with a companion has also its advantages. For one thing the group members can help and look after each other on the journey. For another traveling with others who have the same interest as you, you can share experiences and pleasure with them.As for me, I prefer to travel with a companion.Firstly,we can together deal with the possible problems and difficulties on the journey. Secondly, I like to share the experience of traveling with others. In summary, both traveling alone and traveling with a companion have their own attractions and you can enjoy the pleasure of traveling from either one.2. A complaint letter to one neighbourAuguest 14th,2008.Dear Mr. John ,I'm one of your neighbours. And I'm now writing and behave of the resident 's association to complain about your making noises. You disterb others' normal lifes.Since you moved in the building three months ago we have received many complaints about your bad behaviors. According to the complaints you have shown very little consideration for the other residents of the building. For example ,you often turned on the music very loudly till late.Furthermore every weekend your extremely noisey partys last until the early hours of the next morning so that other residents can not have a good rest.Much words though some residents have talked to you about the noise you made your behavior has no improvement.A harmony community's life needs every resident's effert.Of course you are no exception. We hope you can realise and stop your improper behavior as soon as possible.Unless you do something to improve the present situation,we will have no other choice but to take legal action.Your's sincerelyLinYue4. a witness of a theft incidentYesterday I witnessed a theft incident on my way home. The thelf was so that it left me a very deep impression...It was in the rush hour when many people would buy tickets the subway station.A woman took her purse out and pay for the ticket and then she put her purse back into her bag and turn to leave when a middle aged man rushed pass her muttering:"excuse me ", she didn't feel unusual and went into station indeed her purse had been stolen by that man. To our surprise the thelf seems not to be nervous at all and even began to look others up and down. Maybe he was searching for the next target. At that time, some persons including me witnessed the process but unfortunately no one dared to warn that woman. This incident makes me ashamed and leave me a deep thought:the pickpocket has posed a great threat to residents and visitors' property safety.Undoutedly, it is a urgent thing to take action to prevent pickpocket .However, it cannot dependent on the police only ,instead it needs our common efforts .We connot shut our eyes and mouths to the pickpocket anymore .It should be kept in our minds that our forces are far beyond these thelves.5. Learn to give up wiselyNever give up has been accepted by many people as a positive life attitude. Admittly persistence often plays an important role in one success. However,in many cases to give up might be wiser than to persist blindly. The following reasons can support this argument.Firstly, sometimes our goal may be unrealistic. If we insist on it blindly, it will finally bring us nothing but failure. At this time, what we should do is give up the orignal goal and reset a more pratical one.Secondly, not all persistence can bring deserving results. For a very simple example if we keep waiting in line for hours, only to have a luncheon restaurant may be it is unwise. Finally, to give up wisely does not mean admitting failure. Instead,it does mean a new hope of success.Considering the above mentioned, we can come to the conclusion that to give up wisely is a kind of more mature life attitude. Though giving up sometimes is painful and costly,in the long run what we gain will definitely far out weight what we lose.6. CriticismIt is not unusual for people to be subject to criticism. Anyone may be criticised by others in his work or study. For example: workers who fail to accomplish their tasks will be criticised. Students who have poor performance in exams will be criticised.Attitudes towards criticism differ from person to person. Some people will become annoyed if they are criticised and they will try to excuse themselves by all means. Some people tend to be indifferent criticism. They just regard criticism as nonsenses. But still some people accept criticism modestly and try to find their shortcomings by other's criticism. These people stand a better chance of success in their life.As to me, I welcome other's criticism to me. I have always believed theChinese saying,"Good medicine but taste bitter will heal one's illness". In my opinion, the criticism will make us unhappy. It can help us know our shortcomings and inadequacy. Therefore,we should take other's criticism seriously, instead being annoyed with or turning a deaf ear to it.7. parents making decisions for their childrenIn morden society, traditonal patriarchy is still influencing Chinese parents. They tend to make almost all decisions for their children, from choosing school to picking up a profession and to deciding whom they are to marry.Sometimes even those detail things such as clothing and daily timetables have to be decided by parents. However, deciding everthing for children does not help them but harm them in many ways.On the one hand,it will make children lack independence and initiative, which is unfavourable to their development in the long run.On the other hand,in many cases parents' decisions are not always in accordance with children' personal ideas and interests, this will make children form resistence and naturely influence their growth. From my piont of view,it is unwise for parents to make every decision for their children. It is obvious that parents can not accompany their children for ever.To grow to be indepent is a nature way for everbody. Therefore, in my opinion parents should give their children chances to make their own decisions .They may help their children make choices instead of replacing them to make choices.8. Young People Should Have IdealsWhat are you going to do when you grow up? When I was a child, people often asked me this question about the ideal. Undoubtedly, every individual, especially a young person, should have an ideal. Hardly can we find any great people we know ideal when they were young. An ideal is a vital importance to one's growth and success. On the one hand, an ideal is the target of one's life. Once you decide what your ideal is, you know where to go, and which way to take. Otherwise, you might become puzzled in many things in your life. On the other hand, an ideal is like the engine of vehicles. Only when we have our own ideals, can we find the origin of energy and enthusiasm in life, and become active and perseverant. Whatever your ideal is, careful plan and preparation is vital to its realization. Of course, the path from where you are to where you want to get is not always smooth and straight. Therefore, an optimistic, positivemind is indispensable in the process of your persevering your ideal. In a word, only if you have an ideal, you will have the chance of realizing it.9. The Moonlight ClanNowadays, more and more people, especially the young are joining in the army of “the moonlight clan”. These people exhaust their earnings every month without any savings. Many people think this is a fashionable life style, while more other people object to this kind of consumption style. Those who sup port “the moonlight clan” think that those people know how to enjoy life and have a higher life quality. However, more other people criticize “the moonlight clan”. They say that the consumption habit of “the moonlight clan” is unhealthy and sometimes waste ful. In addition, no savings will place “the moonlight clan” in a difficult position in case of unexpected expenses.Weighing these two arguments, I prefer to the latter one. In my eyes, though “the moonlight clan” may acquire temporary satisfaction from their consumption, in the long term, it is unfavorable to their family and career. Just as a proverb says, one should always prepare for a rainy day.10. Learn to Be GratefulNowadays, quite a few college students lack conciousness of being grateful. They turn to take such things for granted, as parents supporting them, teachers helping them, and waiters serving them. They are even mean to say "Thank you" to others. This phenomenon has caused great attention from the whole society. The following reasons can account for the lack of gratefulness conciousness. First of all, unsound family education plays an important role. Many parents turn to pay too much attention to children's academic performance, but ignore their value orientation. Moreover, schools don't input enough time and money in moral education. Besides, nowadays, college students get so much love that they are insenstive to others' care and help.Considering the seriousness of the problem, it is high time to take effective measures to strengthen college students conciousness of being grateful. First, parents should improve self-quality and influence children by their own behaviors. Second, our society and schools must increase input in moral education, and try to build the atmosphere of being grateful. Finally, we college students should learn to express our gratefulness to people around us, just beginning from the simple "Thank you".11. May 20th, 2008Dear Students,On the 12th of May in 2008, an incredible and unknown earthquake suddenly hit Wenchuan in Sichuan Province, which caused both financial and life loss in a large number. The awful result and influence are beyond people’s estimate. Now people there are suffering from poor living conditions such as lack of clean water, food as well as health problems. Moreover, they are putting up with pains of losing their loved ones and their homes. Despite many difficulties, the local people are striving to reestablish their hometown out of the ruins. So it’s high time that we should show our love to the victims there, such as donating money and materials. If you are willing to give a hand, please contact us at the number 23533316 in the day time and 23533317 at night.Join us in the action and extend our love in the spirit that there is any possible difficulties.Thank you!Sincerely, yoursStudents' Union12. Internet and PrivacyInternet has penetrated into all the aspects of our life and work. We can study and work by it. We can find a job by it. We can communicate by it. We can entertain by it. We can buy and sell by it. We can do almost everything on Internet, and almost anywhere, anytime. However, at the same time Internet provides services for us, it is inevitably invading our privacy to some degree. The services on most websites require our registry. If we want to enjoy these services, we have to provide much private much private information, including our names, genre, address, telephone number and sometimes bank accounts. Due to the poor Internet administration and weak network security, our information might be open, stolen or sold. Even sometimes the information will be misused by the criminals.Considering the above mentioned, we must enhance the alertness when using the Internet. First, when we need Internet service, we should always log on those big legal websites. Second, if the service requires important private information, you should think twice before you type in it.13. A Food Poisoning AccidentLast month, I witnessed a food poisoning accident happening to my classmates. At that time the situation was really very dangerous and urgent. Though finally they got out of danger, this accident is still vivid in my mind. That day was Julie’s birthd ay, one of my classmates. In order to celebrate it, her roommates bought a big birthday cake for her from a supermarket nearby. They shared the cake happily. However, after a while, all of them felt abdominal pain, nausea and dizziness. Two of them even cannot stand up because of great pain. We rushed to send them to the hospital. It turned out that the cake they ate had expired its guarantee period. Futunately, due to timely treatment, they all recovered very soon. However, this accident leaves me a deep ponder. I think it is very urgent to take effective measures to improve food safety. Firstly, the government should strengthen supervision and administration on food safety. More importantly, to those who immoral businessmen, more strict punishment should be given. Besides, we consumers should be more careful in buying food. Only in this way can we make sure that no same accident happens.14. Parental Hopes and Personal IdealsAll parents hope their children wil l have a bright future. However, parents’ expectations for their children are not always in accordance with their children’s personal ideals, and sometimes they are even conflicting with each other. This is often a main cause for quarrels and gaps between parents and children. But what lead to the conflict between parental hopes and personal ideals? The following three factors contribute to the conflict. First of all, in this fast-changing society, parents and children have too many differences in mind. Secondly, traditional patriarchy is still influencing Chinese parents in modern society. They are used to making decisions for their children. Third, nowadays young people have strong independence, who want to plan their own future and control their own destiny. Thus the conflict between parents and children inevitably appear. In order to solve the conflict, both parents and children should pay their efforts. For one thing, parents should give their children rights to make their own decisions. They may help their children make choices instead of replacing them to make choices. For another, children should learn to respect their parents’ advices since parents tend to have more life experience. Besides, to communicate with each other actively is necessary to their understanding each other. As long as both parents and children learn to think from the ot her side’s point of view, the conflicts between them can be avoided.15. Education For AllNowadays in China, the limit to candidates for college entrance examination is not so strict as before. People of all ages and even married people can take the examination and have a chance of becoming a college student. The new regulation has many advantages.Firstly,it provides more people with chances to receive high education. There are many people who have once lost the chance to enter a collegefor some reason. Now they can pick up their own dreams of being a college student. Secondly,it will introduce more students with different backgrounds and the abilities for colleges and universities. Finally,it stimulates competition and promotes the candidates to work harder. However, relaxing the limit of age and marriage might bring some problems. For one thing, married students have to take care of the family and children, which brings more difficulties for school management. For another, there might be a gap between the elder students and the other young students. Therefore, more attention should be paid to the enrollment of those people of other age groups and married persons.16. Holiday EconomyAs we see, the extended holidays have caused unexpected great travel craze and brisk economic activities. But there are many debates on the advantages and disadvantages of this kind of holiday economy. Many people, especially some economists, are in favor of the holiday economy. They believe that tourism-based holiday economy has raised consumption and helped to spur the domestic demands. In addition, transportation, catering, hotels and service industries become flourishing during long holidays. However, many others argue that the holiday economy do more harm than good.First, the travel craze puts a heavy burden on the traffic system.Second, thousands of tourists full scenic spots causing over crowdedness and safety problems. As to me,I believe the advantages of holiday economy outweigh its disadvantages. After all, holiday economy greatly benefits the development of our overall economy.Besides, consumers can enjoy more colourful commodities and more preferential policies provided by the merchants. But the government should take effective measures to reduce the side effects of holiday economy.17. Advantages of Trying New ThingsIt is widely accepted that one is more likely to succeed at things he already knows how to do well. However,to limit ourselves to doing only those things we are good at will make us miss many opportunities to develop other interests and skills. Therefore, sometimes it is necessary for us to try some new things and take some rests.Though we have the risk of failure when trying new things,we can get many advantages from it.Firstly, the process of trying a new thing is a rewarding experience, fromwhich we may feel a different world.Secondly, even if we fail,we can still absorb experience and lessons from the trying process and our failure.Thirdly,if it turns out that we succeed at this new try,we'll get great pleasure and confidence. Finally,it is impossible for us to never fail even if we do only what we are familiar with.We don't know when we'll meet the situation we can't control. With experience of trying new things, when facing unexpected situations,we can deal with them better.Condidering the above mentioned,we needn't be afraid of new things but should bravely try them. But it is worth noting that trying new things bravely does not mean acting rashly and blindly. We should take full account before we are ready to try new things.18. The Popularity of BlogIn recent years, blog has become very popular.More and more people have created their own blogs and often visit others' blogs. They use blog to review their inner voice or collcet and share thoughts and things they find interesting. In brief, blog is an online diary or frequently updated personal page. Why does blog become so popular in such a short time?Firstly, it is the widespread of Internet that provides a platform for the appearance and popularity of blog.Secondly, anyone can create his own blog as he wishes.Blog has no fixed rules and needn't professional knowledge and skills, which enables millions of people to have a voice and connect with others.Thirdly, blog covers all kinds of topics from daily life to political forums, from individual thoughts to world events.Among millions of blogs, you can always find something you are interested in.However, blog has some problems. For one thing, plagiarism in blog is not unusual. The protection of blog copyright cannot be guaranteed. For another, many blog content so in and mass and some even include unhealthy things. Therefore, blog still has a long way to run before it becomes mature.19. Is Good Appearance More Important than Capability?Old people often tell the young, “Don’t judge a person by his appearance”, meaning capability is more important than appearance. However, nowadays, with more interviewers putting emphasis on looks and the appearance of the applicants(独立主格结构表示原因), a lot of people come to the conclusion(得出结论) that appearance is more important than capability.老人们常告诉年轻人:“不要以貌取人”,意思就是说能力比容貌更加重要。

四级英语作文大学生活(热门50篇)I have studied in my middle school for three life in middle school is rich and I have learned a lot. I get knowledge from text books as well as from extra curricular activities. I studied hard in the past three years so that I got perfect scores. But, I also attach importance to other aspects, such as making friends, hobbies, health and sports. What is meant by a true, good student ? A true, good student is one who possesses good morality, sound health, perfect knowledge and various abilities. To attain this, I shall give a few suggestions as follows:First, cultivate good morality. One of the best qualities of a student is good behavior. Bad character is easily scorned and disdained. Polite manners and noble ideas make up a true man. Such evil habits as smoking, drinking, gambling, etc. should be got rid of. Whenever you find something wrong, correct it quickly. You should be sincere to your friends, respectful to your teachers and the elder. In short, you should do everything right.Third, make your body strong and healthy. Health is the key to success. Broken in health, one can do nothing. A sound mindis found only in a sound body. The healthier your body is, the brighter your mind will be, and the higher learning you can attain. S o you should never neglect your health. “Work whileyou work; play while you play” is a good way for everybody to observe. With the foregoing three points in mind, you may be “atruly good student”.

Topic 1 The Necessity of ExaminationAs regards examination, there has been a heated discussion among the general public in our society.People who believe in its necessity may have some arguments as follows. To begin with, examination helps to tell the better-behaved from the worse-behaved students. What’s more examination may stimulate the students to work harder. Take Xiao Wang as an example, a student from Hebei Normal University, he used to have poor command of English. However, under the pressure of College English Test Band 4,he made great progress and can now speak fluent English. By contrast, some people think that examination may give rise to a series of negative effects. They maintain that examination can not always faithfully reflect one’s study performance. It is believed that too many students may be mislead and neglect the improvement of practical ability. Examples of “High marks but poor competence” are often cited on different media.Just as any coin has two sides, it’s no exception with the issue of examination. Students should develop a right attitude toward it and strike a balance between examination and practical ability achievement.[00:00.30]Topic 2On Self-employment of College Graduates .Nowadays, our government encourages college graduates to employ themselves by starting their own career. If their plan is creative and original, the government will grant a financial aid to them. This act aims to stimulate graduates’ creativity and alleviate the pressu re of employment. Firstly, the rate of unemployment and underemployment of college graduates is on the rise in recent years because of the competitive job market. Secondly, some graduate employees are not satisfied with the present job and their enthusiasm for work has been frustrated to some degree. Thirdly, some brilliant and ambitious graduates lack start-up capital even though they have a good idea.In conclusion, the act does not only bring many opportunities to college graduates, but also restore their confidence in themselves and the future. Moreover, many job opportunities are created for the society as a result.Topic 3On the Popularity of Internet-based InstructionWith the rapid development of information technology, there is a boom in Internet-based instruction. Most of the universities offer online courses which have gained much popularity among students nowadays. This new way of teaching brings many advantages. Firstly, it gives much convenience and freedom to students. Students can study at any time and any place as they like, even in pajamas睡衣, 宽长裤. Secondly, it is very economical because students are not required to come to the campus, and schools can cut the expenditure on electricity and water supply, doorkeepers’ payment, pa rk lots maintenance and so on. But online learning has drawbacks as well. One of them is that there is no effective way to ensure that students make the required efforts. As for me, I prefer the traditional way of teaching. The face-to-face communication with teachers can give me more encouragement to learn. As a matter of fact, the direct guidance and class interaction benefit me a lot. Topic 6Fashion Pursuit in Colleges.Nowadays students in colleges and universities are in hot pursuit of fashion, which is an unquestionable fact. They are crazy for everything that is prevailing in society, such as owning luxurious mobile phones and wearing blonde curls. Many people think it acceptable for college students to follow fashion. College students are very flexible in thought and are easy to accept new things, so following fashion may well reflect their pioneering spirit and may help them form a good habit for their future career. But on the contrary, some people have the idea that it is imperative to resist the fashion. College students should concentrate themselves exclusively on studies, which should be on the top of their agenda. Holding the right concept of value makes sense. To earn an impressive academic performance, we college students must pour determined efforts into study and pay no attention to vogue时尚.As far as I am concerned, college students should have the spirit of pioneering. However, the spirit cannot always be shown by fashion, but by their academic performance. We should compete with our peers for better scholarly achievement instead of more expensive fashionable clothes.Topic 7Campus Certificates Craze. If you just randomly ask a student on campus what he is busy doing, very possibly, he may answer that he is preparing for a certificate of some kind.Investigating a little more, you will find that this has become a new craze among college students. The reasons behind the phenomenon can be summarized into just one: the pressure of finding a job after graduation. With the admission expansion of colleges, a lot more graduates have to compete for the limited job posts. How to make oneself more competitive? Maybe more certificates at hand. Hoping that the employers might find one of them more attractive, the students are compelled to run from one exam to another. As far as I am concerned, the students should have a more rational attitude toward certificates, because exam certificates do not necessarily represent one’s ability. For me, one should work hard at his or her major. Opportunity will come to you if you are competent enough in your field.Topic 8On College Students’ Taking Part-time Jobs.Nowadays more and more people voice growing concern over college students’ taking part-time jobs. Some people argue that it is unquestionably beneficial to the students inthat it can enlarge their horizon and enrich their experience, while others firmly hold that part-time jobs of all kinds are harmful since they will hinder the students’ normal college study. Personally, I think this question should be probed in depth. On the one hand, the first group is not totally correct because not all part-time jobs are beneficial. Students are somewhat immature and easily led astray误入歧途地by those money-addicted employers. On the other hand, the second opinion seems not so satisfactory because we also witness successful examples in universities home and abroad. Early working experience can be invaluable as the preparation for future career. From what has been discussed above, we can see clearly that the key lies in whether the student in focus is able to strike a successful balance between work and study. Otherwise, the college life will be caught in the so-called vicious circle no matter whether the student takes part-time jobs or not.[00:00.69]Topic 9My View on Amalgamation合并of Universities.Recently there have been many reports of amalgamation of universities. It turns a new page of advanced education in China, and will have far-reaching effects in the forthcoming years. The biggest benefit, in my eyes, is that the merging often results in a comprehensive university with increased overall strength. To take part in international competitions, we need more universities of this kind. In addition, the integration of staff members will significantly improve the quality of both teaching and research. Finally, reorganization will optimize使最优化the disposition安排;布置of limited resources, which is the symbol of successful educational reform.Apart from the benefits mentioned above, we should also face several unavoidable challenges. In the first place, the integration process itself will be difficult even painful—many people may need to sacrifice their own interestsfor the whole university. In the second place, the management of such biguni versities is not easy at all. What’s the most important, the most successful university is not necessarily the largest one or the one with most students the key lies in the unique spirit of the university. Only when we deal with these problems successfully can we benefit the most from university amalgamation.Topic 10My View on Double BA Degree .Recently it has become a common phenomenon for college students to have two majors at the same time.In this way, they can get double BA degrees when they graduate from the university several years later. Although it may bring unfavorable相反的consequences, we can be sure to conclude that this practice is favorable on the whole. To begin with, most students will become more hard working and efficient in order to finish the learning tasks satisfactorily. Moreover, with two degrees at hand after graduation, they will stand a better chance in the job market full of fierce competition.Weighing the pros and cons赞成和反对的理由;利弊;正反两方面;优缺点of such a new trend, we can naturally arrive at the conclusion that it is beneficial and rewarding值得做的;有益的. This system not only compels students to work hard, but also prepares them for the coming competition.Topic 11On Opening Psychological CoursesRecently, more and more educators and common citizens suggest that universities and colleges open more courses which are helpful for students’ psychological health.Personally, I fully agree with their proposal for the following reasons. On the one hand, the ever-increasing pressure of study at the moment andjob-hunting in the future may lead to many psychological problems, such as anxiety, depression and even despair, and the psychological courses open a door for communication and relaxation. On the other hand, such courses can teach students how to regulate调整; 调节feelings and emotions under different situations, which is a good preparation for the future life in the complex society. Finally, these courses also introduce good habits which are conducive to one’s mental and psychological health. To be mature and qualified citizens in the society, students have to do more than study hard.In a word, I warmly welcome the establishment of psychological courses in universities. In my mind, they are good for students’ psychological developme nt. Topic 12Should College Students Have a Credit Card?At present, credit cards, the once exclusive possessions of the rich, have become quite popular on campus. Some college students hold more than one credit card. They use credit cards to buy a variety of goods, such as clothes, stationery, electronic products and other expensive goods. What’s more, they also use credit cards to pay mobile phone bills and other bills. In my opinion, credit cards are not necessities for college students. With credit cards, some students tend to purchase goods on impulse. They can get temporary临时的, 暂时的satisfaction this way; however, hot-headed purchase will leave a heavy financial burden on students. Worse still, if they can not repay debts on time, their dishonest behavior will be recorded. In a world of credit, such a record is definitely unfavorable to the students. Topic 13My View on Remedial ExaminationsRemedial examinations have been part of university education for many years. After careful observation, we can find that it is more complicated than we have thought. On the whole, I should say remedial examinations are necessary for our educational system. On the one hand, some college students are not working hard, and if none of them fail the examination, how can we guarantee the quality of education? On the other hand, by preparing for and taking part in remedial examinations, students can make up for the lost time. If they can learn from thislesson, it will certainly be beneficial for their future life. To make remedial examinations do the job, however, we have to make sure of several points below. For one thing, we should make all the examinations as fair as possible. Some students cheat in the examinations to get high scores, and others beg the teacher for a satisfactory grade. All of these people should be severely punished. For another, teachers should not decide the number of students failing the test before the examination. They should bear a standard in mind, which is comparable across the years. The remedial examination is an important part of college education. Only by planning it wisely and conducting it reasonably can we make best use of it.Topic 14On Overseas StudyLike anything else, overseas study has both advantages and disadvantages. The main benefits of studying overseas are as follows. In the first place, the overseas students can benefit greatly from the higher academic level and the more advanced research facilities in some famous universities. In the second place, it’s the best way to understand a new culture and its people and language. Last but not least, the experience will be invaluable to character building, making most students more independent, diligent and enterprising有事业心的,有胆量的. However, the negative effects are also obvious. To begin with, if a person does not make full preparations before going abroad, he will have great difficulty adapting to the new environment. What’s more, the cultural differences will hinder the regular life in many ways. Finally, money is always a big problem. Many students have to find part-time jobs to earn money to pay tuition and fees. in conclusion, the advantages of overseas study outweigh its disadvantages. Once they return home, the overseas students will make great contribution toour motherland.[00:00.68]Topic 15On Electronic DictionaryThe discussion about electronic dictionary has never stopped in the past few years. Some people hold that it has a lot of advantages. To begin with, it’s extremely convenient. Whenever you meet new words or expressions, you can know the meaning quickly by looking up it. What’s more, it’s becoming cheaper and cheaper, and more and more students can afford it. However, other people argue that its negative effects are also obvious. Firstly, some students rely too much on it—they never put their heart into learning new words and expressions. Secondly, some explanations are neither complete nor accurate, which are quite misleading.Up until now, we can see it clearly that electronic dictionary is not beneficial or harmful in itself. The key lies in its user—so long as we can make proper use of it, it can be most helpful to us in many respects.Topic 16Are College Students Diligent? When we talk about whether college students are diligent or not, we will be most surprised to find that the present situation is so complicated. On the one hand, many students do not cherish their time on campus: Some indulge themselves in video games or Internet chat, and some go shopping or dancing frequently. On the other hand, many others seize every minute to turn their dreams into reality: Some study in library every day including weekends, some conduct experiments until midnight, some collect data for research papers and others take part in all kinds of examinations. Two reasons, in my eyes, can account for this phenomenon. In the first place, the general environment in university is a decisive factor—if most students are fighting for their future, the others will be affected. In the second place, the general social atmosphere also plays an important role—if the reality can always testify to the proverb “Diligence is the mother of success”, students will not hesitate to take action.Topic 17Going on Studying or Going to WorkCurrently, the major dilemma which most students face upon graduation is whether to continue pursuing postgraduate studies or to find a job immediately. Those who decide to go to work immediately cannot wait to put what they have learned into practice. They believe that only by applicationcan they master knowledge in the real sense真正意义上地. Most important of all, they can live on their own and have the feeling of accomplishment for the first time. Other people, however, believe that if a person wants to be an expert in a specialized专门的field, four years in university is far from enough. The best way is to choose a direction and study it in depth. It is not late at all when they go to work, because they start at a much higher level. No matter which choice a student will finally make, he has to be extremely careful to look into his unique situation and consult the predecessors for their advice. He will make the right choice if he knows his goal in life and how to turn it into reality.Topic 18Stepping away from Online GamesNowadays, more and more college students are addicted to online games. Those games may be fun and exciting, but are very harmful to those addicts. In my opinion, there are many disadvantages of game addiction. Firstly, online games take up a lot of players’ time for study. Many of the addicts found themselves forced to drop out of school for poor academic performance. Secondly, addicts tend to isolate themselves from the reality. What’s worse, indulging in the virtual world for a long time, they are more liable to suffer mental problem and physical collapse. Finally, players are exposed to too much violent and unhealthy material, which is definitely harmful to their growth. In short, I cannot see any benefits from online games. Studying should be theprimary concern of college students. Therefore, I do hope they can step away from online games.[00:00.50]Topic 19How to Eliminate Cheating on CampusNowadays, instead of listening attentively in class and working hard after class, a number of students adopt all kinds of dishonest methods to get high scores in examinations. It has become such a serious problem that it has aroused the concern from the whole society. To put an end to such a serious problem, in my mind, it calls for the efforts from all sides. First of all, the university authority should make it clear that any cheating behaviors in the examinations, from whispering, copying and receiving answers via mobile phones to asking ringers for help, will be severely punished with no exception. Moreover, teachers of all subjects should go all the way to restore honesty by setting an example for the youth through speaking sincerely and behaving truthfully.Last but not least, young students, the future of our nation, should view integrity as the prerequisite先决条件,前提to an upright正直的, 诚实的and responsible citizen so as to learn to despise鄙视, 看不起某人(某事) and fight dishonest behaviors throughout the life. Only when all of us join in the efforts of eliminating cheating at all levels can we expect to have a cleaner society and a more beautiful future.[00:00.32]Topic 20Changing the Major in UniversityRecently it has become a common phenomenon for college students to apply for changing their majors. In this way, they can learn what they’re most interested in if their applications are approved.Although it may bring unfavorable consequences, we can be sure to conclude that this practice is favorable on the whole. To begin with, some students can’t choose their favorite major because their entrance examination scores are not satisfactory enough, but the new system of changing major gives them a second chance. Moreover, once they are learning their favorite major, they will probably be more confident and diligent than before. Finally, students learn largely the same basic courses during the first one or two years, so changing major will not bring learning difficulties. In a word, we can naturally arrive at the conclusion that it is beneficial and rewarding. This system not only gives students a second chance to choose their major, but also prepares them for the coming competition.[00:00.61]Topic 21 CreditCredit is of great importance to one’s development. Without credit, one wouldn’t get the trust from others, let alone get help from others or cooperate with others.Howev er, nowadays the whole society is faced with “credit crisis”. To begin with, business is threatened by the lack of credit and trust between enterprises and banks. According to a recent survey conducted by the People’s Bank ofChina, a total amount of 3240 billion Yuan debts were not paid off to banks by the enterprises in the year 2006. In addition, lies often exist between friends. For example, Xiao Wang—my neighbor—was persuaded to buy certain insurance product and turned out to find that he was cheated. What’s more, we have heard lots of news reports that family members cheated each other for their respective benefits. We should take measures to improve people’s sense of credit and establish stricter laws to punish the behavior of those who do not have credit. Only in these ways can we hope to enhance the credit of the whole society.Topic 22Is EQ More Important than IQ?Nowadays, many people in the society hold the idea that 20% of one’s success lies in his Intelligence Quotient, while 80﹪in his Emotional Quotient. People now are more and more aware of the importance of EQ.In my opinion, I fully agree with that. First of all, with a high EQ, one will get along well with his peers and companions, so they can conduct business or finish their work in a harmonious atmosphere and improve the working efficiency. Furthermore, only with high EQ can one be self-restrained and bravely overcome the difficulties encountered in work and life.In brief, a high EQ will make a person become more optimistic, confident and passionate in his work. As the saying goes, one’s character determines one’s destiny, which stresses on the importance of EQ. Therefore, while IQ indeed can’t be ignored, EQ is more vital for one to be successful.Topic 23My View on Global Food CrisisRecently, people are talking about an urgent threat—the global food crisis, and the year 2008 is even defined as The Year of Global Food Crisis. The global food crisis, firstly, can be said to be triggered by the fast population growth in recent decades. With more and more people to be fed, we have to find better ways to increase our agricultural yields. Moreover, while we are striving for a higher civilization, the damages we have done to the environment make much of the world’s soil deteriorate. W ith the land yielding little, there is no wonder that people will go hungry. Last but not least, many farmers in some countries are leaving the land because the cost of production exceeds the return. Some of them work at jobs off the land, and some just lay waste the land altogether.Solving the global food crisis is a big issue, and needs the concern and cooperation of every nation of the world. On an individual level, we should be frugal节约的,节俭的,节省的about the food, and never waste a bit of it.Topic 24 Food SafetyDue to the tainted腐坏的, 污染的, 沾污的, 感染的milk produced by Sanlu Company, many infants were suffering from kidney stone, and some even died. This case, however, is only the latest food safety problem. In the near past, KFC food was found to be tainted by Sudan red, a dangerous chemical that couldcause cancers.Food contamination will result in not only direct health problems, but also other indirect consequences. On the one hand, when a product is discovered to be contaminated, people will have lingering fears ,take Sanlu scandal for instance, when the scandal was brought into the daylight, the company only reaped its bankruptcy, which can affect social stability due to unemployment brought by it.I n order to counter对抗food safety problems, corporate leaders should not only attach importance to short-term profit through adulteration掺杂,掺假货and other unlawful不合法的means. Meanwhile, the government should also perfect its supervision procedures and increase financing for food testing. [00:00.26]Topic 25My View on Freeters飞特族Nowadays, the emergence and rise of freeters in China has caught public attention. Freeters are those who do not have any stable jobs and only earn money when they are in need of it. When they have adequate money, they usually do things at their pleasure. The phenomenon of freeters shows that people can enjoy a flexible schedule and live a desirable life. However, there are some potential problems for them. For one thing, they are always moving and changing jobs; as a result, their welfare can not be guaranteed. For another, they are less likely to have a long-term career development because of too frequent change of jobs. Last but not least, they are possibly not aware that what they do is kind of irresponsibility for their family and the society. To my mind, the rise of freeters manifests social progress. However, the scale of freeters should be controlled; otherwise it will cause problems.Topic 26My View on Self-reliance自力更生From my point of view, self-reliance means doing whatever we can by ourselves, and when facing difficulties, we try our best to deal with the problems rather than rely on others. Self-reliance is vital to everybody in that we can not depend on others all the time. Besides, it is also a sign of growing-up, which means that we can take the responsibilities for the family and the society. Then how can we become self-reliant? Firstly, we should get out of the bad habit of being looked after by our parents. Secondly, we should not ask for help from others easily when we are involved in some troubling situation. Moreover,self-confidence is a precondition of self-reliance, for only when we trust in ourselves, we can be self-reliant. Trust thyself”, so says American author and philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson in his famous essay“Self-reliance”.Self-reliance is important to everybody and is one of the key factors that make us successful in life.Topic 27My View On TV ShoppingNowadays, with the fast development of mass media networks, people areexperiencing unprecedented convenience of handling daily matters. TV shopping programs, for example, have made shopping so simple that it has become a fashion and trend that we can hardly resist. However, everything can be a double-edged sword and TV shopping program is no exception. TV shopping has its advantages. Firstly, it is very convenient for consumers to make their purchase without going out and walking wearily from one shop window to another. Secondly, compared with paper advertisements, TV shopping programs show us the goods more vividly. When it comes to disadvantages, it seems that we, as consumers, can hear and see what is presented, but stand a narrow chance of knowing for sure what the goods are really like, and sometimes these salesmen just sweet talk us into buying what we do not need or something of poor quality. While making good use of TV shopping programs, we should be rational about what is advertised on TV and spend our money in a reasonable and cost-effective way.Topic 28 My View on Train Ticket ScalperFor many college students, going back home for the Spring Festival proves to be an ordeal. Despite the efforts of queuing up for several hours or even days, some can not get the tickets. As the last resort, they would turn to train ticket scalpers.According to numerous media reports, illegal ticket deal has become a flourishing茂盛的, 兴盛的and well-organized business. Though illegaltrain-ticket deal does help some home-bounded people, often times ticket scalpers sell fake tickets. Consequently, those with fake tickets will be punished by train conductors. Furthermore, suspicion of scalpers being hand in glove密切合作、互相勾结with railway employees has already resulted in the public anxiety and anger, which will pose potential threat to the social stability. While the railway infrastructure can not be improved in the near future, the only solution to controlling the illegal ticket deal depends on the efficiency of railway system management. If the ticket distribution system is reliable, then scalpers will eventually find their flourishing business doomed.Topic 29On Idol WorshippingIdol worshipping is not a new phenomenon, but the recent cases of unreasonable behaviors conducted by some young people have made it a focus of attention again. Espec ially, a young girl’s father has committed suicide just to wake up his daughter who is possessed by the idea of following her idol wherever he goes. Some people argue that the mass media is to blame for the tragedy, because they always show a picture of glamorous富有魅力的;迷人的movie stars, pop singers and all the other entertainers. They represent a lifestyle that young people desire to have. However, the young people are just not mature enough to distinguish the reality from the dream. Other people believe that it shows the。

01 The Language of MusicA painter hangs his or her finished pictures on a wall, and everyone can see it. A composer writes a work, but no one can hear it until it is performed. Professional singers and players have great responsibilities, for the composer is utterly dependent on them. A student of music needs as long and as arduous a training to become a performer as a medical student needs to become a doctor. Most training is concerned with technique, for musicians have to have the muscular proficiency of an athlete or a ballet dancer. Singers practice breathing every day, as their vocal chords would be inadequate without controlled muscular support. String players practice moving the fingers of the left hand up and down, while drawing the bow to and fro with the right arm—two entirely different movements.Singers and instruments have to be able to get every note perfectly in tune. Pianists are spared this particular anxiety, for the notes are already there, waiting for them, and it is the piano tuner’s responsibility to tune the instrument for them. But they have their own difficulties; the hammers that hit the string have to be coaxed not to sound like percussion, and each overlapping tone has to sound clear. This problem of getting clear texture is one that confronts student conductors: they have to learn to know every note of the music and how it should sound, and they have to aim at controlling these sound with fanatical but selfless authority.Technique is of no use unless it is combined with musical knowledge and understanding. Great artists are those who are so thoroughly at home in the language of music that they can enjoy performing works written in any century.02 Schooling and EducationIt is commonly believed in United States that school is where people go to get an education. Nevertheless, it has been said that today children interrupt their education to go to school. The distinction between schooling and education implied by this remark is important.Education is much more open-ended and all-inclusive than schooling. Education knows no bounds. It can take place anywhere, whether in the shower or in the job, whether in a kitchen or on a tractor. It includes both the formal learning that takes place in schools and the whole universe of informal learning. The agents of education can range from a revered grandparent to the people debating politics on the radio, from a child to a distinguished scientist. Whereas schooling has a certain predictability, education quite often produces surprises. A chance conversation with a stranger may lead a person to discover how little is known of other religions. People are engaged in education from infancy on. Education, then, is a very broad, inclusive term. It is a lifelong process, a process that st arts long before the start of school, and one that should be an integral part of one’s entire life.Schooling, on the other hand, is a specific, formalized process, whose general patternvaries little from one setting to the next. Throughout a country, children arrive at school at approximately the same time, take assigned seats, are taught by an adult, use similar textbooks, do homework, take exams, and so on. The slices of reality that are to be learned, whether they are the alphabet or an understanding of the working of government, have usually been limited by the boundaries of the subject being taught. For example, high school students know that there not likely to find out in their classes the truth about political problems in their communities or what the newest filmmakers are experimenting with. There are definite conditions surrounding the formalized process of schooling.03 The Definition of “Price”Prices determine how resources are to be used. They are also the means by which products and services that are in limited supply are rationed among buyers. The price system of the United States is a complex network composed of the prices of all the products bought and sold in the economy as well as those of a myriad of services, including labor, professional, transportation, and public-utility services. The interrelationships of all these prices make up the ―system‖ of prices. The price of any particular product or service is linked to a broad, complicated system of prices in which everything seems to depend more or less upon everything else.If one were to ask a group of randomly selected individuals to define ―price‖, many would reply that price is an amount of money paid by the buyer to the seller of a product or service or, in other words that price is the money values of a product or service as agreed upon in a market transaction. This definition is, of course, valid as far as it goes. For a complete understanding of a price in any particular transaction, much more than the amount of money involved must be known. Both the buyer and the seller should be familiar with not only the money amount, but with the amount and quality of the product or service to be exchanged, the time and place at which the exchange will take place and payment will be made, the form of money to be used, the credit terms and discounts that apply to the transaction, guarantees on the product or service, delivery terms, return privileges, and other factors. In other words, both buyer and seller should be fully aware of all the factors that comprise the total ―package‖ being exchanged for the asked-for amount of money in order that they may evaluate a given price.04 ElectricityThe modern age is an age of electricity. People are so used to electric lights, radio, televisions, and telephones that it is hard to imagine what life would be like without them. When there is a power failure, people grope about in flickering candlelight, cars hesitate in the streets because there are no traffic lights to guide them, and food spoils in silent refrigerators.Yet, people began to understand how electricity works only a little more than two centuriesago. Nature has apparently been experimenting in this field for million of years. Scientists are discovering more and more that the liv ing world may hold many interesting secrets of electricity that could benefit humanity. All living cell send out tiny pulses of electricity. As the heart beats, it sends out pulses of record; they form an electrocardiogram, which a doctor can study to determine how well the heart is working. The brain, too, sends out brain waves of electricity, which can be recorded in an electroencephalogram. The electric currents generated by most living cells are extremely small – often so small that sensitive instruments are needed to record them. But in some animals, certain muscle cells have become so specialized as electrical generators that they do not work as muscle cells at all. When large numbers of these cell are linked together, the effects can be astonishing. The electric eel is an amazing storage battery. It can seed a jolt of as much as eight hundred volts of electricity through the water in which it live. ( An electric house current is only one hundred twenty volts.) As many as four-fifths of all the cells in the electric eel’s body are specialized for generating electricity, and the strength of the shock it can deliver corresponds roughly to length of its body.05 The Beginning of DramaThere are many theories about the beginning of drama in ancient Greece. The on most widely accepted today is based on the assumption that drama evolved from ritual. The argument for this view goes as follows. In the beginning, human beings viewed the natural forces of the world-even the seasonal changes-as unpredictable, and they sought through various means to control these unknown and feared powers. Those measures which appeared to bring the desired results were then retained and repeated until they hardened into fixed rituals. Eventually stories arose which explained or veiled the mysteries of the rites. As time passed some rituals were abandoned, but the stories, later called myths, persisted and provided material for art and drama. Those who believe that drama evolved out of ritual also argue that those rites contain ed the seed of theater because music, dance, masks, and costumes were almost always used, Furthermore, a suitable site had to be provided for performances and when the entire community did not participate, a clear division was usually made between the "acting area" and the "auditorium." In addition, there were performers, and, since considerable importance was attached to avoiding mistakes in the enactment of rites, religious leaders usually assumed that task. Wearing masks and costumes, they often impersonated other people, animals, or supernatural beings, and mimed the desired effect-success in hunt or battle, the coming rain, the revival of the Sun-as an actor might. Eventually such dramatic representations were separated from religious activities.Another theory traces the theater's origin from the human interest in storytelling. According to this vies tales (about the hunt, war, or other feats) are gradually elaborated,at first through the use of impersonation, action, and dialogue by a narrator and t hen through the assumption of each of the roles by a different person. A closely related theory traces theater to those dances that are primarily rhythmical and gymnastic or that are imitations of animal movements and sounds.06 TelevisionTelevision-----the most pervasive and persuasive of modern technologies, marked by rapid change and growth-is moving into a new era, an era of extraordinary sophistication and versatility, which promises to reshape our lives and our world. It is an electronic revolution of sorts, made possible by the marriage of television and computer technologies. The word "television", derived from its Greek (tele: distant) and Latin (visio: sight) roots, can literally be interpreted as sight from a distance. Very simply put, it works in this way: through a sophisticated system of electronics, television provides the capability of converting an image (focused on a special photoconductive plate within a camera) into electronic impulses, which can be sent through a wire or cable. These impulses, when fed into a receiver (television set), can then be electronically reconstituted into that same image.Television is more than just an electronic system, however. It is a means of expression, as well as a vehicle for communication, and as such becomes a powerful tool for reaching other human beings. The field of television can be div ided into two categories determined by its means of transmission. First, there is broadcast television, which reaches the masses through broad-based airwave transmission of television signals. Second, there is nonbroadcast television, which provides for the needs of individuals or specific interest groups through controlled transmission techniques.Traditionally, telev ision has been a medium of the masses. We are most familiar with broadcast television because it has been with us for about thirty-seven years in a form similar to what exists today. During those years, it has been controlled, for the most part, by the broadcast networks, ABC, NBC, and CBS, who have been the major purveyors of news, information, and entertainment. These giants of broadcasting have actually shaped not only television but our perception of it as well. We have come to look upon the picture tube as a source of entertainment, placing our role in this dynamic medium as the passive viewer.07 Andrew CarnegieAndrew Carnegie, known as the King of Steel, built the steel industry in the United States, and , in the process, became one of the wealthiest men in America. His success resulted inpart from his ability to sell the product and in part from his policy of expanding during periods of economic decline, when most of his competitors were reducing their investments.Carnegie believed that individuals should progress through hard work, but he also felt strongly that the wealthy should use their fortunes for the benefit of society. He opposed charity, preferring instead to provide educational opportunities that would allow others to help themselves. "He who dies rich, dies disgraced," he often said.Among his more noteworthy contributions to society are those that bear his name, including the Carnegie Institute of Pittsburgh, which has a library, a museum of fine arts, and a museum of national history. He also founded a school of technology that is now part of Carnegie-Mellon University. Other philanthrophic gifts are the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace to promote understanding between nations, the Carnegie Institute of Washington to fund scientific research, and Carnegie Hall to provide a center for the arts. Few Americans have been left untouched by Andrew Carnegie's generosity. His contributions of more than five million dollars established 2,500 libraries in small communities throughout the country and formed the nucleus of the public library system that we all enjoy today.08 American RevolutionThe American Revolution was not a sudden and v iolent overturning of the political and social framework, such as later occurred in France and Russia, when both were already independent nations. Significant changes were ushered in, but they were not breathtaking. What happened was accelerated evolution rather than outright revolution. During the conflict itself people went on working and praying, marrying and playing. Most of th em were not seriously disturbed by the actual fighting, and many of the more isolated communities scarcely knew that a war was on.America's War of Independence heralded the birth of three modern nations. One was Canada, which received its first large in flux of English-speaking population from the thousands of loyalists who fled there from the United States. Another was Australia, which became a penal colony now that America was no longer available for prisoners and debtors. The third newcomer-the United States-based itself squarely on republican principles.Yet even the political overturn was not so revolutionary as one might suppose. In some states, notably Connecticut and Rhode Island, the war largely ratified a colonial self-rule already existing. British officials, everywhere ousted, were replaced by a home-grown governing class, which promptly sought a local substitute for king and Parliament.09 SuburbanizationIf by "suburb" is meant an urban margin that grows more rapidly than its already developed interior, the process of suburbanization began during the emergence of the industrial city in the second quarter of the nineteenth century. Before that period the city was a small highly compact cluster in which people moved about on foot and goods were conveyed by horse and cart. But the early factories built in the 1840's were located along waterways and near railheads at the edges of cities, and housing was needed for the thousands of people drawn by the prospect of employment. In time, the factories were surrounded by proliferating mill towns of apartments and row houses that abutted the older, main cities. As a defense against this encroachment and to enlarge their tax bases, the cities appropriated their industrial neighbors. In 1854, for example, the city of Philadelphia annexed most of Philadelphia County. Similar municipal maneuvers took place in Chicago and in New York. Indeed, most great cities of the United States achieved such status only by incorporating the communities along their borders. With the acceleration of industrial growth came acute urban crowding and accompanying social stress-conditions that began to approach disastrous proportions when, in 1888, the first commercially successful electric traction line was developed. Within a few years the horse-drawn trolleys were retired and electric streetcar networks crisscrossed and connected every major urban area, fostering a wave of suburbanization that transformed the compact industrial city into a dispersed metropolis. This first phase of mass-scale suburbanization was reinforced by the simultaneous emergence of the urban Middle Class, whose desires for homeownership in neighborhoods far from the aging inner city were satisfied by the developers of single-family housing tracts.10 Types of SpeechStandard usage includes those words and expressions understood, used, and accepted by a majority of the speakers of a language in any situation regardless of the level of formality. As such, these words and expressions are well defined and listed in standard dictionaries. Colloquialisms, on the other hand, are familiar words and idioms that are understood by almost all speakers of a language and used in informal speech or writing, but not considered appropriate for more formal situations. Almost all idiomatic expressions are colloquial language. Slang, however, refers to words and expressions understood by a large number of speakers but not accepted as good, formal usage by the majority. Colloquial expressions and even slang may be found in standard dictionaries but will be so identified. Both colloquial usage and slang are more common in speech than in writing. Colloquial speech often passes into standard speech. Some slang also passes into standard speech, but other slang expressions enjoy momentary popularity followed by obscurity. In some cases, the majority never accepts certain slang phrases but nevertheless retains them in their collective memories. Every generation seems to require its own set of words to describe familiar objects and events. It has been pointed out by a number of linguists that three cultural conditions are necessary for the creation of a large body of slangexpressions. First, the introduction and acceptance of new objects and situations in the society; second, a diverse population with a large number of subgroups; third, association among the subgroups and the majority population. Finally, it is worth noting that the terms "standard" "colloquial" and "slang" exist only as abstract labels for scholars who study language. Only a tiny number of the speakers of any language will be aware that they are using colloquial or slang expressions. Most speakers of English will, during appropriate situations, select and use all three types of expressions.11 ArchaeologyArchaeology is a source of history, not just a bumble auxiliary discipline. Archaeological data are historical documents in their own right, not mere illustrations to written texts, Just as much as any other historian, an archaeologist studies and tries to reconstitute the process that has created the human world in which we live - and us ourselves in so far as we are each creatures of our age and social environment. Archaeological data are all changes in the material world resulting from human action or, more succinctly, the fossilized results of human behavior. The sum total of these constitutes what may be called the archaeological record. This record exhibits certain peculiarities and deficiencies the consequences of which produce a rather superficial contrast between archaeological history and the more familiar kind based upon written records. Not all human behavior fossilizes. The words I utter and you hear as v ibrations in the air are certainly human changes in the material world and may be of great historical significance. Yet they leave no sort of trace in the archaeological records unless they are captured by a dictaphone or written down by a clerk. The movement of troops on the battlefield may "change the course of history," but this is equally ephemeral from the archaeologist's standpoint. What is perhaps worse, most organic materials are perishable. Everything made of wood, hide, wool, linen, grass, hair, and similar materials will decay and vanish in dust in a few years or centuries, save under very exceptional conditions. In a relatively brief period the archaeological record is reduce to mere scraps of stone, bone, glass, metal, and earthenware. Still modern archaeology, by applying appropriate techniques and comparative methods, aided by a few lucky finds from peat-bogs, deserts, and frozen soils, is able to fill up a good deal of the gap.12 MuseumsFrom Boston to Los Angeles, from New York City to Chicago to Dallas, museums are either planning, building, or wrapping up wholesale expansion programs. These programs already have radically altered facades and floor plans or are expected to do so in the not-too-distant future. In New York City alone, six major institutions have spread up and out into the air space andneighborhoods around them or are preparing to do so.The reasons for this confluence of activity are complex, but one factor is a consideration everywhere - space. With collections expanding, with the needs and functions of museums changing, empty space has become a very precious commodity.Probably nowhere in the country is this more true than at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, which has needed additional space for decades and which received its last significant facelift ten years ago. Because of the space crunch, the Art Museum has become increasingly cautious in considering acquisitions and donations of art, in some cases passing up opportunities to strengthen its collections.Deaccessing - or selling off - works of art has taken on new importance because of the museum's space problems. And increasingly, curators have been forced to juggle gallery space, rotating one masterpiece into public view while another is sent to storage. Despite the clear need for additional gallery and storage space, however," the museum has no plan, no plan to break out of its envelope in the next fifteen years," according to Philadelphia Museum of Art's president.13 Skyscrapers and EnvironmentIn the late 1960's, many people in North America turned their attention to environmental problems, and new steel-and-glass skyscrapers were widely criticized. Ecologists pointed out that a cluster of tall buildings in a city often overburdens public transportation and parking lot capacities.Skyscrapers are also lavish consumers, and wasters, of electric power. In one recent year, the addition of 17 million square feet of skyscraper office space in New York City raised the peak daily demand for electricity by 120, 000 kilowatts-enough to supply the entire city of Albany, New York, for a day.Glass-walled skyscrapers can be especially wasteful. The heat loss (or gain)through a wall of half-inch plate glass is more than ten times that through a typical masonry wall filled with insulation board. To lessen the strain on heating and air-conditioning equipment, builders of skyscrapers have begun to use double-glazed panels of glass, and reflective glasses coated with silver or gold mirror films that reduce glare as well as heat gain. However, mirror-walled skyscrapers raise the temperature of the surrounding air and affect neighboring buildings.Skyscrapers put a severe strain on a city's sanitation facilities, too. If fully occupied, the two World Trade Center towers in New York City would alone generate 2.25 million gallons of raw sewage each year-as much as a city the size of Stanford, Connecticut , which has a population of more than 109, 000.14 A Rare Fossil RecordThe preservation of embryos and juveniles is a rate occurrence in the fossil record. The tiny, delicate skeletons are usually scattered by scavengers or destroyed by weathering before they can be fossilized. Ichthyosaurs had a higher chance of being preserved than did terrestrial creatures because, as marine animals, they tended to live in environments less subject to erosion. Still, their fossilization required a suite of factors: a slow rate of decay of soft tissues, little scavenging by other animals, a lack of swift currents and waves to jumble and carry away small bones, and fairly rapid burial. Given these factors, some areas have become a treasury of well-preserved ichthyosaur fossils. The deposits at Holzmaden, Germany, present an interesting case for analysis. The ichthyosaur remains are found in black, bituminous marine shales deposited about 190 million years ago. Over the years, thousands of specimens of marine reptiles, fish and invertebrates have been recovered from these rocks. The quality of preservation is outstanding, but what is even more impressive is the number of ichthyosaur fossils containing preserved embryos. Ichthyosaurs with embryos have been reported from 6 different levels of the shale in a small area around Holzmaden, suggesting that a specific site was used by large numbers of ichthyosaurs repeatedly over time. The embryos are quite advanced in their physical development; their paddles, for example, are already well formed. One specimen is even preserved in the birth canal. In addition, the shale contains the remains of many newborns that are between 20 and 30 inches long. Why are there so many pregnant females and young at Holzmaden when they are so rare elsewhere? The quality of preservation is almost unmatched and quarry operations have been carried out carefully with an awareness of the value of the fossils. But these factors do not account for the interesting question of how there came to be such a concentration of pregnant ichthyosaurs in a particular place very close to their time of giv ing birth.15 The Nobel AcademyFor the last 82years, Sweden's Nobel Academy has decided who will receive the Nobel Prize in Literature, thereby determining who will be elevated from the great and the near great to the immortal. But today the Academy is coming under heavy criticism both from the without and from within. Critics contend that the selection of the winners o ften has less to do with true writing ability than with the peculiar internal politics of the Academy and of Sweden itself. According to Ingmar Bjorksten , the cultural editor for one of the country's two major newspapers, the prize continues to represent "what people call a very Swedish exercise: reflecting Swedish tastes."The Academy has defended itself against such charges of provincialism in its selection by asserting that its physical distance from the great literary capitals of the world actuallyserves to protect the Academy from outside influences. This may well be true, but critics respond that this very distance may also be responsible for the Academy's inability to perceive accurately authentic trends in the literary world.Regardless of concerns over the selection process, however, it seems that the prize will continue to survive both as an indicator of the literature that we most highly praise, and as an elusive goal that writers seek. If for no other reason, the prize will continue to be desirable for the financial rewards that accompany it; not only is the cash prize itself considerable, but it also dramatically increases sales of an author's books.16. the war between Britain and FranceIn the late eighteenth century, battles raged in almost every corner of Europe, as well as in the Middle East, south Africa ,the West Indies, and Latin America. In reality, however, there was only one major war during this time, the war between Britain and France. All other battles were ancillary to this larger conflict, and were often at least partially related to its antagonist’ goals and strategies. France sought total domination of Europe . this goal was obstructed by British independence and Britain’s efforts throughout the continent to thwart Napole on; through treaties. Britain built coalitions (not dissimilar in concept to today’s NATO) guaranteeing British participation in all major European conflicts. These two antagonists were poorly matched, insofar as they had very unequal strengths; France was predominant on land, Britain at sea. The French knew that, short of defeating the British navy, their only hope of victory was to close all the ports of Europe to British ships. Accordingly, France set out to overcome Britain by extending its military domination from Moscow t Lisbon, from Jutland to Calabria. All of this entailed tremendous risk, because France did not have the military resources to control this much territory and still protect itself and maintain order at home.French strategists calculated that a navy of 150 ships would provide the force necessary to defeat the British navy. Such a force would give France a three-to-two advantage over Britain. This advantage was deemed necessary because of Britain’s superior sea skills and technology be cause of Britain’s superior sea skills and technology, and also because Britain would be fighting a defensive war, allowing it to win with fewer forces. Napoleon never lost substantial impediment to his control of Europe. As his force neared that goal, Nap oleon grew increasingly impatient and began planning an immediate attack.17.Evolution of sleepSleep is very ancient. In the electroencephalographic sense we share it with all the primates and almost all the other mammals and birds: it may extend bac k as far as the reptiles. There is some ev idence that the two types of sleep, dreaming and dreamless, depend on。
