It is much easier to sharpen the reels before they need it badly. Each individual lawn type of grass and mowing conditions are different, so use your own judgment as to when the best time would be to sharpen. A sharp mower allows you to keep the cutting action in superior condition and maximize its efficiency. Each individual lawn, type of grass and mowing conditions are different. It should not, however, be necessary to sharpen your mower’s blades more often than a few times per mowing season even in the most severe applications.SHARPENING INSTRUCTIONS1. Remove each head out of the frame and securely support it on your work table.Figure 1 2. Using a screwdriver inserted in the slot of the “C” clip retainingring, which holds the wheel onto the axle. Remove the “C” clipand wheel from the right hand side of the mower (See Figure 1)Figure 2 3. Carefully remove the pinion gear being extremely careful not tolose the pawl, as it will easily fall out of the slot located on the reelshaft. Remove the pawl and place in a safe place. (See Figure 2)Figure 3 4. Place the provided backlapping tool attachment carefully over thereel shaft,. The cotter pin should fit through the hole in the shaft andthe drill attachment in place. (See Figure 3)MANUFACTURERS ALERT: Failure to firmly secure mower head to work surface could result in injury. Always keep fingers and hands away from the blades while sharpening.Figure 45. Take the jar of sharpening compound and brush provided, spreadthe compound over the edges of each reel blade. (See Figure 4)Figure 56. After the compound is on the blades, start the drill turningthe reel backwards or counterclockwise. (The reel should beturning in the opposite direction of normal mowing rotation.)Turn blades slowing to avoid compound from spinning offblades. As the compound begins to hone the blades it willchange color. Continue this movement for approximately1 – 3 minutes (See Figure 5)7. To check your progress, take a clean rag and remove material from the edge of a blade. Youshould see a clean shiny cutting edge along the entire blade. On extremely dull and damaged blades, it may be necessary to tighten the cutting action using your adjusting screws on the mower and repeat No. 6, to properly sharpen the mower blades.8. After completing the sharpening operation, remove the drill and attachment. Replace the pawl inthe reel shaft, pinion gear, wheel and secure the “C” clip retaining ring. Wash all the grinding compound from reel blades and cutter bar.9. To insure proper sharpening and blade adjustment turn mower upside down and use a strip ofpaper approximately 1” to 2” in width, carefully insert paper between the reel and the cutter bar.Slowly and carefully turn the reel by hand. The reel should cut paper on each blade along its entire length. If not, it is necessary to readjust the cutting action according to your owner’s manual. Adjust blades no tighter to cutter bar than needed to cut paper. After proper adjustment has been done, lightly oil blades and cutter bar with a light oil such as WD-40.TECHNICAL SERVICE PROBLEMS OR QUESTIONS.CALL PROMOW, INC. - TOLL FREE 1-877-477-6669。
