Identifying the topic sentence
Another factor to consider is the type of idea or information given in the sentence. The topic sentence is a general statement that can cover all other information in the paragraph. For instance, if a sentence talks about several things and looks at the big picture, it is very likely the topic sentence. In contrast, sentences that provide specific details, e.g. explanation, reasons, examples, statistics, or facts, are supporting sentences.
The topic sentence is the first sentence in the paragraph. It states a general idea: women are enthusiastic about pursuing a perfect look under the influence of the beauty industry. All the other sentences contain specific details which explain and illustrate this idea.
