Unit 5 Section ⅣⅠ.阅读理解 A A boy lost in the wilderness was saved by a kangaroo. That's the story floating around after Simon Kruger, a 7-year-old boy, was rescued from Australia's Deep Creek Conservation Park. According to Australia's 7 News, the saga began when Simon wandered off after the family ate a picnic lunch. Apparently the lost boy drifted away to pick flowers for his mom. Instead, he got hopelessly lost—and without adequate warm clothing to stay out overnight in the forest. A police search, including helicopters, followed. But Simon wasn't found for 24 hours—even though he was ultimately discovered only about half a kilometer from the family's campsite. His father Etienne Kruger thinks his son was disoriented when the rain and wind swept in after he got lost. However it happened, Simon wasn't found for almost a full 24 hours. The overnight weather was cold and wet, dropping to a low of around 43 degrees Fahrenheit. So how did the lost boy survive the cold, wet night? The family said that Simon's flowers for his mom attracted a kangaroo. His dad explained, “A kangaroo came closer to him and ate the flowers from him, and the kangaroo fell asleep next to him. I think God sent a kangaroo to keep him warm.” 文章大意:7岁男孩西蒙·克鲁格在澳大利亚阿德莱德的深溪保护区公园走失,因袋鼠帮助取暖而得以获救。

B At the Smithsonian's National Zoo, animals are getting their paws dirty with harmless water-based paints to create unique works of art. Is there a growing Picasso in the group? According to information from the zoo, painting is one of many activities that fall under Animal Enrichment—a program that provides physically and mentally stimulating(增进健康的) activities and environments for the zoo's residents. The animals have the opportunity not only to choose how to behave, but also to use their natural abilities and behaviors in new and exciting ways. Enrichment is a necessary part of the daily care of the species in the zoo's collection. Keepers carefully study animals' behaviors and determine what kinds of enrichment programs are suitable for each species. Keepers have a number of choices for enrichment. They may change an exhibit, train an animal, introduce new smells, sounds, foods, and objects, or enlistan animal in a research project, such as a study about the skills to search for food or cognitive(认知的) research. Adding a variety of engaging activities helps keepers ensure the zoo's animals have a high quality of life. Though the subjects of the animals' paintings remain mysterious, visitors to the zoo can support the effort by dropping off canvas(画布), art paper, paint brush or harmless water-based paints at the Visitor Center for the animal care staff to give to the animals. Zoo keepers are collecting gifts for theanimals this holiday season. Art produced by many of the zoo's residents will be available for purchase at the American Association of Zoo Keepers' Art Show, which will take place next spring. If you are interested, you can also go and buy one. 文章大意:在史密森尼国家动物园,动物们有着丰富的艺术生活,它们用自己的妙手泼洒对艺术的“见解”。
