【注意】
1)在“too…to…”结构中,动词不定式作结果状语时 表示否定意义。如果要表示肯定意义,则需在不定 式之前加not。如: He is too wise not to see that.

在when,where,while,once,if,until,unless 等引导从句中,如果从句的主语与主句的主语一致, 且从句的谓语动词是be动词或包含be动词,则从句 的主语和be动词可以同时省略。如: While( he was) there,he helped local people to learn English.
(3)介词加关系代词这个结构常常可与一个关系副词互 换。如:
1)I’ll never forget the day when I first met you. = I'Il never forget the day on which first met'you. 我永远不会忘记第一次见你的那天。 2)Do you know a shop where I can find hats? = Do yon know a shop at which I can find hats?

(2)在口语中,介词和关系代词分开,也可以省略。 【注意】
关系代词在紧跟介词时,只能用which,不能用that, 也不能省略。 …the earth, the planet on which we are living,... = …the earth, the planet which /that/ we are living on,…

该句中的the one不能换成that。
(4)That 用作替代词和它所替代的名词词组的中心词的 “数”可以不一致。替代单数名词时,只替代 “the+单数名词”,不可替代“a+单数名词”。如: The song by Schubert is more tuneful than that by Britain.(that= the song。song为可数名词。) (5) that作为替代词,它不能用于没有关系代词的定语 从句之前。如:
这些材料是由几种液体混合在一起并加压使之凝固 而成的。

7.This is a very small rise when compared with the size of the whole earth.

本句中that指带的是前文中的the distance.这种用法 在英语里叫“替代”( substitution)。 替代词that和those的用法: (1)that和those通常用作指使代词,也可用作替代词。 它们总是伴随着限定性的后置修饰语,分别等于the one和the ones。如:The houses of the rich are generally larger than those of the poor.
【辨析】rise和raise rise是不及物动词,用于人时表示“站起来”;用 于物时,表示“自身移动到较高的位置”,强调由 低向高变化的过程。而raise是及物动词,表示使人 或物升到较高的位置。如: They are raising a flag.

(3)compare A with B 把……和……比较。
