The Chinese OutpostBForeign visitors to the UK might be disappointed when they learn that not everyone there speaks like Harry Potter and his friends. Usually, there's an assumption by many non-Brits that everyone in Britain speaks with what's known as a Received Pronunciation(RP, 标准发音)accent, also called "the Queen's English". However, while many people do talk this way, most Britons speak in their own regional accents.Scouse, Glaswegian and the Black Country-from Liverpool, Glasgow and the West Midlands-are just three of the countless non-RP accents that British people speak with. There are even differences in accents between towns or cities just 30 kilometers apart. What is even more disappointing is that not speaking in a RP accent may mean a British person is judged and even treated differently in their everyday life.In a 2015 study by the University of New South Wales videos of people reading a passage in three different UK accents were shown to a second group of people. The group then rated how intelligent they thought the readers sounded. The lowest-rated accent wasthe Brummie accent, native to people from Birmingham, a city whose accent is considered the working class. However, there is no need to be disappointed though you are not speaking in a RP accent. In fact, doing the opposite may even give you advantages.Kong Seong-jae, 25, is an Internet celebrity from Seoul. After studying in the UK, he picked up several regional accents. He's now famous for his online videos, where he shows off the various accents he's learned. "British people usually get really excited when I use some of their local dialect words, and they become much friendlier. I think it makes a bit of bond between local people and foreigners to speak in their local accent," he said.So if you' re working on perfecting your British accent, try to speak like someone from Liverpool, Glasgow or Birmingham. You may not sound like Harry Potter, but you are likely to make more friends.4. What can we infer from paragraph 1?A. Non-Brits usually hold that all Britons speak in a RP accent.B. Only "the Queen's English" is accepted in the UK.C. Foreign visitors are disappointed at their own spoken English.D. Any Received Pronunciation around the world is also called "the Queen's English"5. What do people think of the Brummie accent?A. It is favored by foreign visitors to the UK.B. It is closest to the RP accent.C. It is smart and easy to understand.D. It is spoken by people of the working class.6. What does the underlined phrase "doing the opposite" in Paragraph 4 refer to?A. Speaking in a RP accent.B. Speaking in regional accentsC. Speaking the Brummie accent.D. Speaking like Harry Potter.7. What is the passage mainly about?A. A study about the most intelligent accent in Britain.B. A comparison between different British accents.C. How much British people value the RP accent.D. The impact of regional accents on people's lives.CIf English means endless new words, difficult grammar and sometimes strange pronunciation, you are wrong. Haven't you noticed that you have become smarter since you started to learn a second language? According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brain power. Researchers found that learning other languages changes grey matter. This is the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles. The study also found the effect is greater when the younger people learn a second language. A team led by Dr. Andrea, from University College London, took a group of Britons who only spoke English. They were compared with a group of "early bilinguals" who had learnt a second language before the age of five, as well as a number of later learners.Scans showed that grey matter density(密度)in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before mastering a new language, the smaller the difference was.“Our findings suggest that the structure of the brain is changed by the experience of learning a second language, "said the scientists. It means that the change itself increases the ability to learn. Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones of the University of Wales, has researched the link between bilingualism and math skills. "Having two languages gives you two windows on the world and makes your brain more flexible(灵活的), " he said. "You are actually going beyond language and have a better understanding of different ideas. The findings were matched in a study of native Italian speakers who had learned English as a second language between the ages of two and thirty-four. Reading, writing, and comprehension were all tested. The results showed that the younger they started to learn, the better. The winter of 1996 was especially brutal. It was a hard time in my own life too. A neck injury had kept me flat in bed for nearly a year. “Just in time for Easter,” my husband, Dick, said. But how could I feel the joy when the snow was four feet deep and I had months of painful physical treatment ahead?I was doing the dishes one day, feeling hopeless when there was a tap on the glass. It was a branch of the troublesome cottonwood (棉白杨).Back in the fall of1979, it was a new subdivision(细枝) then, an eight-foot stick. The people who’d briefly occupied the house before us had placed the pipe from the pump next to it. The earth was so wet that the poor thing had fallen down, most of its bare root system pointing skyward, and blowing hopelessly back and forth in the cold wind. Dick decided to pull it out one day, but I protested.“Look at how hard it’s trying!” I said, pointing to the way it strongly kept hold of the earth. “It deserves a chance.”Dick borrowed some tools. We packed dry soil around the tree and put up some stakes (桩) into the ground, making it stand upright. That winter was still terrible. Surprisingly, in spring my “rescue stick” put forth a few leaves and lots of branches. The year after that, we were able to remove the stakes. By the 1990s that little stick was a giant, towering over the house. Now the tapping at the window continued, louder as the wind picked up, almost as though to tell me to look up. At last, I did. I caught my breath. In the window against the icy blue sky, thousands and thousands of fresh red buds were waving in the wind. The tree was bursting with life and I had a wonderful Easter.()4.What is the meaning of the underlined word “brutal” in Paragraph 1?A.Busy.B.Hard.C.Long.D.Warm.()5.How did the author and her husband Dick rescue the new subdivision?A.By supporting the tree firmly.B.By watering the tree regularly.C.By distributing chemical fertilizers.D.By gathering sticks day and night.()6.What is the author’s purpose of writing the last paragraph?A.To inform us of the current condition of her cottonwood.B.To imply that she’d pulled through t he hardest time and felt hopeful.C.To tell us that the tree had survived from the awful winter.D.To suggest what she was going to do for the coming festival.()7.Which of the following can serve as the main idea of the passage?A.A friend in need is a friend indeed.B.There is no garden without its weeds.C.Well begun is half done.D.Where there is life, there is hope.CBacteria are an annoying problem for astronauts. The micro-organisms(微生物) from our bodies grow uncontrollably on surfaces of the International Space Station, so astronauts spend hours cleaning them up each week. How is NASA overcoming this very tiny big problem? It’s turning to a bunch of high school kids. But not just any kids. It is depending on NASA HUNCH high school classrooms, like the one science teachers Gene Gordon and Donna Himmelberg lead at Fairport High School in Fairport, New York.HUNCH is designed to connect high school classrooms with NASA engineers. For the past two years, Gordon’s students have been studying ways to ki ll bacteria in zero gravity, and they think they’re close to a solution(解决方案). “We don’t give the students any breaks. They have to do it just like NASA engineers,” says Florence Gold, a project manager.“There are no tests,” Gordon says. “There is no gr aded homework. There almost are no grades, other than ‘Are you working towards your goal?’ Basically, it’s ‘I’ve got to produce this product and then, at the end of the year, present it to NASA.’ Engineers come and really do an in-person review, and…it’s n ot a very nice thing at times. It’s a hard business review of your product.”Gordon says the HUNCH programme has an impact(影响) on college admissions and practical life skills. “These kids are so absorbed in their studies that I just sit back. I don’t teach.” And that annoying bacteria? Gordon says his students are e-mailing daily with NASA engineers about the problem, readying a workable solution to test in space.()8.What do we know about the bacteria in the International Space Station?A.They are hard to get rid of.B.They lead to air pollution.C.They appear in different forms.D.They damage the instruments.()9.What is the purpose of the HUNCH programme?A.To strengthen teacher-student relationships.B.To sharpen students’ communication skills.C.To allow students to experience zero gravity.D.To link space technology with school education.()10.What do the NASA engineers do for the students in the programme?A.Check their product.B.Guide project designs.C.Adjust work schedules.D.Grade their homework.()11.What is the best title for the text?A.NASA: the home of astronautsB.Space: the final homework frontierC.Nature: an outdoor classroomD.HUNCH:a college admission reformDBy trying to tickle(挠痒痒) rats and recording how their nerve cells respond, Shimpei Ishiyama and his adviser are discovering a mystery that has puzzled thinkers since Aristotle expected that humans, given their thin skin and the unique ability to laugh, were the only ticklish animals. It turns out that Aristotle was wrong. In their study published on Thursday, Ishiyama and his adviser Michael Brecht found that rats squeaked and jumped with pleasure when tickled on their backs and bellies. These signs of joy changed according to their moods. And for the first time, they discovered a special group of nerve cells. These nerve cells made this feeling so powerful that it causes an individual being tickled to lose control. To make sure that he had indeed found a place in the brain where tickling was processed, Ishiyama then stimulated that area with electrical currents. The rats began to jump like rabbits and sing like birds.“It’s a truly groundbreaking discovery,” said Jeffrey Burgdorf, a neuroscientist at North-western University who reviewed the paper. “It takes the study of emotion to a new level.”Burgdorf has played a central role in our understanding of animal tickling. He was part of a team that first noticed, in the late 1990s, that rats made special noises when they were experiencing social pleasure. Others had already noted that ratsrepeatedly made short and high sounds during meals. But the lab where Burgdorf worked noticed that they emitted similar sounds while playing. And so one day, the senior scientist in the lab said, “Let’s go and tickle some rats.” They qu ickly found that those cries of pleasure doubled.“The authors have been very adventurous,” said Daniel O’Connor, a neuroscientist at Johns Hopkins University who studies touch. To him, that finding was very surprising.“Why does the world literally feel different when you are stressed out?” he said. “This is the first step towards answering that question. It gives us a way to approach it with experimental rigour(严谨).”()12.What contributed to humans’ being ticklish according to Aristotle?A.Their special skin.B.Their social pleasure.C.Their nervous system.D.Their willingness to touch.()13.Why did the researchers make use of electrical currents?A.To discover the special group of nerve cells.B.To experiment on different animals.C.To follow the process of tickling.D.To prove their finding.()14.Which of the following statements will Jeffrey Burgdorf agree with?A.The research process is full of risks.B.The finding of the study is surprising and unbelievable.C.The new discovery is beneficial to the study of emotion.D.The finding of the study actually contradicts modern science.()15.What is the best title for the text?A.The life of ratsB.How rats laughC.A wonderful scientistD.A new discovery about rats第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。
