Offering some of the world’s finest beersBTwelve years ago, Danny called me from a dark, damp subway station. “A baby!” he shouted. “Get down here, and flag down a police car or something.” By nature, Danny is a remarkably calm person, so when I felt his heart pounding through the phone line, I ran. When I got to the subway station, Danny was holding a light-brown-skinned baby, about a day old. The baby had been wrapped in an oversize black sweatshirt and left on the ground in a corner behind the gate. What neither of us knew, or could have predicted, was that Danny had not just saved an abandoned infant; he had found our son.Three months later, Danny appeared in family court to give an account of finding the baby. Suddenly, the judge asked, “Would you be interested in adopting this baby?” The question surprised everyone in the courtroom, except Danny, who answered, simply, “Yes.”“But I know it’s not that easy,” he said.“Well, it can be,” assured the judge before barking out orders to allow me to be a parent-to-be.My first reaction, when I heard, went something like, “Are you crazy? How could you say yes without consulti ng me?”In three years as a couple, we had never discussed adopting a child. I was an ambitious playwright working as a part-time word processor. Danny was a respected yet wildly underpaid social worker. We had a roommate, who slept in our living room, to help pay the rent.We knew how many challenges couples usually faced when they wanted to adopt. And while Danny had patience and selflessness, I didn’t know how to change a diaper(尿布), let alone nurse a child. I didn’t trust the system and was sure there would be obstacles. Also, I couldn’t handle parenthood. So I promised myself I wouldn’t get attached. The caretaker held him and then placed him in my arms. But when the baby stared up at me, with all the innocence and hope he represented, I, like Danny, was completely hooked.24. Why did the author rush to the subway station?A. To show human’s kindness and love by n atureCIf you believe in thermometer(温度计), you should believe in global warming. And if you believe in eating fries with your hamburger, you should worry more about carbon emissions. It won't happen overnight, but as the planet's climate changes, the growth cycles of main crops will all be heavily affected. Here are three of the crops that might not beat the heat. The potato actually needs a great deal of beauty rest to develop properly. “They need a cool nighttime temperature in order to start growing the tuber, the part that we eat,” Nelson says.Temperature and altitude are two primary concerns in coffee growth, and farmers are stuck between a rock and a hard place.“We know that coffee grows in a certain temperature range, ”Nelson says.“They've been moving up the mountains, but at some point you run out of mountains to move up.”Higher-grade strains of Arabica coffee in Central American regions are at particular risk due to the need for lower growing temperature, especially since diseases and pests are also becoming more of a factor as temperatures rise.Even if you're looking at the direct effects of temperature alone, rice is in trouble. “As nighttime temperatures go up, the rice is going to have a problem flowering and won't make as many seeds, ”Nel son says. In addition to this direct heat consequence, rising sea levels will flood many rice fields and destroy water salinity levels, while droughts will lower production, raise prices, and further shame westerners who are too clumsy with chopsticks to be able to clear their plates once a new grain is adopted.28.What is the closest meaning to the underlined word “emissions” in Paragraph 1?A. MixtureB. PollutionC. Going downD. Letting off29.What does the potatoes' development need according to Nelson?A. Enough water and saltB. Cool temperature at nightC. Much sunshine and fresh airD. Having successively picked up Italian a decade earlier when he lived in Italy, he felt the challenge was gettable.Elliott, who is now 50, explains, “I feel like Italian is deep down in my head somewhere, but with Spanish it will take a lot more effort for me to get to that level. I’ve noticed that my brain isn’t as good as it was.”It ’s often said that you can’t teach an old dog new tricks. Actually this proverb is, for the most part, not true. It was generally thought that the adult brain was believed to be a fixed structure that, once damaged, could not be repaired. But the research published since the 1960s has challenged this assumption, showing that it is what changes itself in response to new experiences, and adapts to injuries. This research suggests that a young man can learn something new easily, but that the older they are, the harder it is for them to do so.Some aspects of language learning become more difficult with age. Others may get easier. Picking up a new language’s vocabulary is much easier for adults than learning the rules that govern its grammar. This is becau se new words can be easily connected with a learner’s pre-existing knowledge. But older learners are less likely to have good pronunciation or accent, since the sound of a new language is picked up naturally by children.Despite the difficulties, Elliott regards learning foreign languages as fun. “I’ m doing it partly to keep my brain active.” he says. “When you have some success and can express yourself, it feels like you’re using different parts of your brain that you weren’t using before.”32.When Elvin Elliott decided to learn Spanish, .A. he was then forty years oldB. he lived in Spain with his wifeC. he made success in his workD. he wanted to make friends33.The author mentioned the underlined proverb in the passage .A. to show that old dogs are too foolishB. to explain the true meaning of “new tricks”C. to indicate Elliott is different from othersD. to show the saying doesn’t agree with Elliott34.The difficulty for an adult to learn a new language is that .A. he can’t remember so many new wordsB. he can’t pronounce the words correctlyC. he can’t master the grammar rules easilyD. he can’t understand the language fully35.What can we infer by reading the passage?A. An old dog will learn no new tricksB. No one is so old that he may not learnC. Nothing comes from nothingD. Never offer to teach fish to swim第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

We have no time to tell a bedtime story to our children, or enjoy a nice dinner with our family, or take a break to think about how we live the precious life, or even meet friends. All we notice is that the distinctions(区别,特质) that used to guide and steady us-between Sunday and Monday, public and private, here and there-are gone. We have more ways to communicate, but less and less to say, partly because we’re so busy communicating.Maybe that’s why more and more people I know, even if they have no religious belief, seem to be turning to yoga(瑜伽), or meditation(冥想), or tai chi. Some friends of mine try to go on long walks every Sunday, or to “forget” their cellphones at home. A series of tests in recent years has shown that their brains become both calmer and sharper after spending time in quiet rural settings. In my own case, I often turn to extreme measures to try to keep my sanity(心智健康,头脑清醒) and ensure that I have time to do nothing at all. I’ve not yet used a cellphone and I’v e never tweeted Facebook. I tried not to go online till my day’s writing was finished, and I moved from Manhattan to rural Japan.None of this is a matter of principle or asceticism(苦行主义):It’s just pure selfishness. Nothing makes me feel better-- calmer, clearer and happier-- than being in one place, absorbed in a book, a conversation, or a piece of music. It’s actually something deeper than mere happiness: It’s joy, which the monk David Steindl-Rast describes as “that kind of happiness that doesn’t depend on what happens”. That is the highest of the highest we have been longing for-The joy of quiet.8. Why does the writer sometimes do nothing at all?A. He is out of work.B. He wants to relax himself.C.Whatever he does makes no sense.D. He is worried about his writing.9. What does the writer mean when using the word “forget” in the second paragraph?A. Trapped in busy work, they are really forgetful.B. They think the cellphone is not a suitable means of communication.C. They hate modern techniques such as the cellphone.D. They leave their cellphones at home on purpose.10. What can we learn from the passage?A. The writer is unwilling to help others since he is selfish.B. It is better to go back to the ancient times since we are so busy now.C. Slowing down to find space to think and enjoy ourselves is necessary.D. We have more to say because we have more ways to communicate.11. What is the main idea of the passage?A. Enjoying quiet time is very important.B. We can do some sports such as yoga to relax.C. To feel better, we should do nothing at all.D. The more we communicate, the better we will feel.DPast studies have showed that saying words aloud could be beneficial to improving memory. However, this often isn’t practical in a classroo m environment or a study group. Now, researchers have come up with a new idea. They suggest drawing a picture of what you are trying to memorize!Jeffrey Wammes from the University of Waterloo recently carried out a study. He and his two colleagues began b y assigning a group of students a list of easy to draw words such as “apple”or “balloon.” After calling out each word, the researchers would give the students forty seconds, to either write it repeatedly or draw a picture.Once the task was complete, the scientists tried to distract(分散) and challenge the students’memories by giving them an unrelated task: focusing on classifying(分类) musical tones. After that had been completed, the researchers gave the students 60 seconds to write down as many words as they could recall(回想) from the first task. Sure enough, those that had used drawing as their memorization tool, did a much better job of remembering the words than those that had written them many times. To make certain the results were not a coincidence(巧合) the researchers conducted several variations of the test. The students were asked to draw words many times, embellish(修饰) written words by shading them, and even list physical descriptions of each word, The results were always the same ---the students that excelled were the ones that had drawn the image! Not an artist? No worries. The researchers say the quality of the drawing played no role in recalling. According to Wammes, the students’ memories improved even when they were given just a few seconds to draw a picture.Wammes and his colleagues now plan to take this research further by studying why drawing helps memorization. While there is much more to discover, the next time you are having a hard time learning a concept, draw it!12. Why did Jeffery carry out his study?A. To help people say words aloudB. To find a way for memory improvementC. To challenge students memoriesD. To check students’ abilities of identifying music13. What does the underlined word “excelled” in paragraph 4 probably mea n?A. stood outB. took partC. won a gameD. got confused14. What will Jeffery’s further study be probably about?A. The effects of the time spent on drawingsB. The way of learning concepts by drawingC. The way high quality drawings influence memoryD. The reason why memory gets improved by drawing15. Who will find Jeffrey’s findings most useful?A. PaintersB. MusiciansC. Teachers and studentsD. Doctors and researchers第二节 (共5小题; 每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

Whether it would be the food, clothes, or the place they live, parents will always make sure their children have the best of everything. One of the biggest concerns that parents currently have is educating their children. They are faced with lots of difficulties when it comes to education for their young ones. Choices include private school, charter school (特许学校), public school or home schooling.Fortunately for parents, there are a variety of different strategies that a parent can take in order to increase their child’s skills and overall intelligence.According to Ross A. Thompson, PhD, professor of psychology at the University of California at Davis, a child’s brain will actually reach 90% of its full size by the time they start kindergarten.Researchers at Northwestern University in Chicago concluded that playing a musical instrument directly affected the brain stem, the lower section of the brain. Moreover, children that learn an instrument at an early age tend to continue it when they are older. And numerous studies show that a well balanced meal is essential for a child’s mental and physical health. It is recommended that parents teach their children two languages at once. Whether it would be the food, clothes, or the place they live, parents will always make sure their children have the best of everything. One of the biggest concerns that parents currently have is educating their children. They are faced with lots of difficulties when it comes to education for their young ones. Choices include private school, charter school (特许学校), public school or home schooling.Fortunately for parents, there are a variety of different strategies that a parent can take in order to increase their child’s skills and overall intelligence. According to Ross A. Thompson, PhD, professor of psychol ogy at the University of California at Davis, a child’s brain will actually reach 90% of its full size by the time they start kindergarten.Researchers at Northwestern University in Chicago concluded that playing a musical instrument directly affected the brain stem, the lower section of the brain. Moreover, children that learn an instrument at an early age tend to continue it when they are older. And numerous studies show that a well balanced meal is essential for a child’s mental and physical health. It is recommended that parents teach their children two languages at once. What type of writing is this text?A. An advertisement.B. A lesson plan.C. An educational report.D. An introduction to a sport.BIt was an extremely hot day. My younger brother Walt and I had decided to go swimming in the stream behind Mr. Blickez’s house, because it would be the only way to cool ourselves down. Across his farm and through some woods was a deep swimming hole supplied by several cold springs(泉).The only problem with our plan was that this farm was guarded by a huge mean Hereford bull(公牛). Mr. Blickez had told us that Elsie, the animal’s name, was the meanest bull in town, maybe even the county, and we believed in him. But the hotter it got, the more we thought there was reason to doubt about what he said. For one thing, we remembered Mr. Blickez liked telling tall tales; for another, Elsie seemed like a strange name for a bull. Finally, I talked Mom into asking permission for us to walk through the farm, and Mr. Blickez finally agreed. On our way across the farm, we stopped at the fence to admire the swimming hole. The sun shone brightly across the cool waters. We couldn’t wait to get there. Suddenly, Walt shouted loudly. Elsie had run to him and was licking (舔) his back. I immediately hid under the fence. However, when I looked up, I saw that Elsie wasn’t a big mean bull at all. She was just a friendly young cow, and she was going to keep lickingmy brother’s back as long as he stood still. When we discovered the truth, we were so happy. We then ran to the swimming hole and jumped in. The water was just as wonderful as we had dreamed. After that day, we had many good days and we often visited our secret swimming hole guarded by the so-called “big mean bull”.4. The author and his brother decided to go to swim because __________.A. there was no water to take a shower at homeB. they wanted to try their newly-found swimming holeC. Mr. Blickez invited them to his house for swimmingD. the weather was so hot that they couldn’t stand it5. What was the problem faced by the author and his brother?A. They didn’t know where to swim.B. Their mother didn’t want them to swim.C. They had to face a very mean bull.D. They didn’t know how to get to the stream.6. What can we know about Mr. Blickez?A. He is very shy.B. He often tells lies.C. He is an honest man.D. He is very kind to children.7. When Elsie saw the author’s brother, she __________.A. tried to attack himB. showed her friendlinessC. immediately ran awayD. tried to drive him awayCThere are around 6,000 living languages in the world — and at least half of these are in danger. In every part of the world, languages are disappearing. In fact, one scientist has said that languages are in more danger of extinction than birds or mammals. Professor Steve Sutherland of the University of East Anglia says that in the past 500 years 4.5 percent of languages have died out — compared with 1.3 percent of birds, and 1.9 percent of mammals.Languages come and go, and thousands have done exactly that without leaving any trace (痕迹). Only a very few — Basque, Greek and Latin among them — have lasted more than 2,000 years. But it seems that the pace of their disappearance is becoming quicker. The Ethnologue, a database of all the languages spoken in the world, states that 417 languages are spoken by so few people that they are in the final stages of becoming extinct. If very few people speak a language, it will probably die out.Languages may be lost through migration (迁移), as people move from small towns to city centers, or when environments are destroyed by the search for oil or wood. Natural disasters can also devastate populations, and along with them, their language. Governments also play a role in the extinction of languages. The need to establish “official languages”, for a country to educate its children and carry out its business, had a disastrous effect on many small languages. What is lost if a language is lost? Some people argue that languages die as the human race develops. Obviously there could be great benefits if everyone in the world spoke the same language — some industries already reflect (反映) this, with English essential for pilots and air traffic controllers. But there are more important things than convenience. As languages are lost, whole ways of life and knowledge may be lost along with them.To put it simply, language expresses something about identity, about our place in the world. Ani Rauhihi, a Maori teacher in New Zealand's North Island, sums it up: “If you grow up speaking our language, you won't know who you are.”8. The numbers mentioned in the first paragraph suggest that __________.A. most languages have died out completelyB. languages are disappearing slower than beforeC. animals are disappearing faster than languagesD. languages are in great danger of extinction9. The underlined word “devastate” can best be replaced by “__________”.A. increaseB. controlC. improveD. damage10. If a language is lost, __________.A. there will be great troubleB. its culture and knowledge will also be lostC. there is no need to worry about itD. people will be able to communicate with others conveniently11. What can we infer from the last paragraph?A. Languages reflect our identity.B. People will speak the same language one day.C. Fewer people will remember their own languages.D. Ani Rauhihi cares less about languages dying out.DImagine, one day, getting out of bed in Beijing and being at your office in Shanghai in only a couple of hours, and then, after a full day of work, going back home to Beijing and having dinner there.Sounds unusual, doesn't it? But it's not that unrealistic, with the development of China’s high-speed railway system. China has an even greater high-speed railway plan to connect the country with Southeast Asia, and finally Eastern Europe.China is planning to extend(延长) its own high-speed railway network to up to 17 countries in 10 to 15 years, eventually reaching London and Singapore. If China’s plan for the high-speed railway goes forward, people could rush from London to Beijing within two days. The new system would still follow China’s high-speed railway standard. And the trains would be able to go 346 kilometers an hour, almost as fast as some airplanes.China’s bullet train(高速列车), the one connecting Wuhan to Guangzhou, already has the World’s fastest average speed. It covers 1,069 kilometers in about three hours.Of course, there are some technical challenges to overcome. There are so many issues that need to be settled, such as safety and maintenance(保养) of railway tracks.。
