ABob Dylan could hardly have imagined that he would get this kind of special praise for his long career as a musician and songwriter. The Nobel Prize for Literature from the Swedish Academy on October 13 is the most recent achievement of Dylan, who has long been among the cultural masters of the modern age. He has “created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition”, according to the academy.Although Dylan, 75, is not really seen as a literary(文学的)writer, he has given the world over 50 years of creative output. In his 1985 album Biography, Dylan wrote about the attraction of folk music to him. Rock songs “weren’t serious enough or didn’t reflect life in a realistic way”, he explained. Folk m usic, pared with rock music, was a more serious type of thing. The songs were filled with more sadness, more joy, more faith in the supernatural and much deeper feelings.Dylan’s music and lyrics(歌词)did speak to a generation of people during the 1960s. His lyrics often spoke about great political causes, such as the civil rights movement or the campaign against the war in Vietnam. The 1960s were a time of change, a time when the young were demanding that their voices be heard. Some people were puzzled that a literary prize had been handed to a singer. But poetry and song have long been found together. Greek poet Homer would have sung the poem The Iliad. In the Middle Ages, wandering minstrels(吟游诗人)performed their poems to music just like Dylan does.Far from just being a fashionable move, giving the prize to Dylan can be seen as bringing back an old literary tradition. The millions whose lives Dylan’s songs have made better willsurely wele the award.21. Dylan was given the Nobel Prize because __________.A. he created many literary worksB. he performed his poems to musicC. he wrote his lyrics in a poetic wayD. he was one of the cultural masters22. From the passage, we can learn that ________.A. Dylan’s songs have great influences on politics.B. Not everyone favors Dylan’s winning the prize.C. It is only a fashionable move to offer Dylan the prize.D. Songs and poems did not e together until recently.23. What will be the best title for the passage?A. The Popularity of Folk MusicB. A Famous Musician, Bob DylanC. A Surprising Nobel Prize for LiteratureD. Bob Dylan’s Contributions to LiteratureBThe world’s nights are getting brighter and brighter as light pollution invades darkness almost everywhere. Researchers found that Earth's artificially lit outdoor area grew by 2% a year from 2018 to 2018. So did night time brightness. Light pollution was even worse than that, according to the German-led team, because the light sensor(感应器)cannot recognize some of the LED lighting that is being more widespread, specifically blue light.“Honestly, I had hoped that with LEDs we were improving the situation. But it turns out quite disappointing.” said Kyba, the lead author of the s tudy.“Asia, Africa and South America, for the most part, saw an increase in artificial night lighting. More and more places are fixing outdoor lighting, due to its low cost and the growth in munities’ wealth,” the scientists said. The biological effect from the increasing man-made light is obvious, according to the researchers. People’s sleep can be damaged, which in turn can affect their health. The living behavior of birds, fish, insects and bats can be interrupted. And forget about seeing stars or the Milky Way if the pollution continues.“Many people are using light at night without really thinking about the cost,” said Franz Holker, one of the co-authors. “Not just the economic cost, but also the cost that you haveto pay for environmental damage.”24. Why is the night being increasingly brighter?A. Artificial light is used in larger areas.B. The light sensors fail to work properly.C. LED lighting gives off too much blue light.D. More families afford to use lighting at home.25. The brighter nights will bring about ________.A. a more balanced sleeping scheduleB. reduced cost of lighting during the nightC. a better view of stars and the Milky WayD. harmful biological effects on some animals26. Where is this passage probably taken from?A. A tourist guide.B. A science magazine.C. A biology textbook.D. A medical report.CThe letter arrived as I was dressing for dinner in my room on the evening of 23rd September 1902.London was deserted at that time of the summer, and I had bee very bored and depressed with my daily routine of work at the Foreign Office. All my friends were away enjoying themselves at country house parties, but here was I who was forced to remain in London because of my job.I had encouraged my friends to believe that the Foreign Office could not manage without me during the summer, but the truth was that my work was neither interesting nor important, mainly taking messages for absent officials, whose holiday plans had destroyed mine.Although my friends had sent me letters to show pity, it was clear that I had not been greatly missed, and now, at the end of September, I realized another bitter truth. Two more days, and I would be free to start my holiday, but I had nowhere to go! The country house parties were all breaking up, and though I could always go home, which fashionable young man wants to spend his holiday with his own family? So, when a letter, with a German stamp, arrived that evening, I felt a touch of interest, even excitement. I opened it and read:Dear Carruthers,You will probably be surprised to hear from me, as it’s a long time since we met. But I write in the hope that you might like to e here and join me in a little sailing and perhaps, duck shooting. This part of the Baltic is very beautiful and there should be plenty of ducks soon, if it gets cold enough. The friend who was with me has had to leave, and I really need someone else, as I’d like to stay out here for a while. I know you speak German perfectly, and that will be a great help.Yours ever,Arthur DaviesHis letter seemed rather unpromising. His friend had left him—why? The Baltic was beautiful—yes, but what about October storms? Did I really want to spend my holiday freezingin the Baltic, with a man who I didn’t know well? The letter was a turning point in my life, though I did not know it at the time.27. How did the writer feel about his ing holiday?A. Depressed.B. Delighted.C. Interested.D. Hopeful.28. What did Arthur Davies ask the writer to do in the letter?A. Sail in the Baltic Sea.B. Take care of his work.C. Help him with German.D. Join him in duck watching.29. Which of the following statements is true?A. The letter arrived when the writer was having dinner.B. The writer accepted the invitation without any hesitation.C. The letter was to make a great difference to the writer's life.D. The writer felt honored to take messages for absent officials.30. The underlined word “unpromising” in the last paragraph can be replaced by ________.A. pleasantB. uninterestingC. amusingD. doubtful第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题纸上将该选项标号涂黑。

The downpour has caused widespread flooding, forcing more than 32,000 people into shelters and damaging the city’s water supply system. The only silver lining is that disasters like these seemed to unite people. While the number of organizations and individuals that have gone all out to assist the victims is too many to list, here are some highlights of the outpouring of support that has made headlines this past week. A week ago, NFI player JJ Watt set up a website with a goal to raise $200,000. Soon he has collected over $18 million, and the donations keep pouring in. The thrilled football star wants to ensure the money is used where needed, saying, “We’re trying to make sure it goesdirectly to the people. So our first wave of operation is we'll have nine semi-trucks going out there and I will go straight into the munities and hand stuff out there.” Ordinary individuals are not shying away from helping either. Jim McIngvale, the owner of a furniture store, turned his two 100,000-square-foot warehouse into shelters. When asked if he was concerned about the furniture that was being used by those living there, he responded, “These people are nice. They’re taking care of the furniture. Furniture’s made to be sat on, slept on or laid on. It’s just a product.” There are also many unsung heroes that are putting their lives at risk to help others. After discovering an elderly man trapped inside his truck, local people made a human chain through the dangerous water to drag him to safety. While there is not much anyone could have done to prevent the loss, people across the US are doing everything they can to help its people recover. 24. Which can best replace the underlined words “silver lining” in paragraph 2? A. problem B. opportunity C. solution D. fort 25. How did JJ Watt most probably feel about the donation? A. Disappointed B. Confused. C. Unexpected. D. Dissatisfied. 26. What did Jim McIngvale do to help the victims in the disaster? A. He helped to save them from drowning. B. He offered them a place to live in. C. He provided work for them in his store. D. He rented furniture to them cheaply. 27. What spirit does the author mainly intend to praise? A. Determination. B. Selflessness. C. Honesty. D. Bravery. C When kids believe they can achieve success in math and reading, they are more likely to achieve high test scores in those subjects, new research suggests. Researchers used one US data set (1,354 American children) and one UK data set (13,901 British children) to measure self-concept and standardized assessments of early and later academic achievement. Self-concept is how students perceive(感知)their abilities to succeed on academic tasks. The data involved youth aged 5 to 18. The study considered children’s earlier achievement and their characteristics and backgrounds, including birth weight, race, gender, age, and their mother’s education. The researchers found that children’s self-concept of their ability in math predicted later math achievement, while their self-concept of their ability in reading predicted later reading achievement. The finding suggests that the links between self-concept of ability and later achievement are specific to areas; that is, there is a link from students’ self-concept about reading to reading achievement, and from students’ self-concept about math to math achievement. “It is not unusual to see standardized measures of achievement predict achievement later in schooling, but it shows that there is more to understand.” says study coauthor Pamela Davis-Kean. The research also showed that success was not limited to students who perform at the top levels. “It involves in students with different levels of achievement in math and reading,” says Maria Ines Susperreguy, an assistant professor at Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile, who
