这些北美原住民将这种运动称为pasuckuakohowog,意思是“他们聚在一起用脚玩球”(they gather to play ball with the foot)。

All-American football

All-American football1.Football is not just a game in America. It is an event. A big event. Millions ofpeople attend football games or watch them on television. Thousands of others play football themselves, on professional, school, or neighborhood teams, or just with friends. The games are often only a part of the colorful spectacles(壮观的场面或景象) that go with them. Parades(游行) and marching bands(游行乐队), cheerleaders(啦啦队队员), and cheering fans with banners(横幅) and horns are all a part of the festivity(庆祝活动) surrounding football.2.Football has its beginning in soccer and rugby. All have the same objective, whichis to get the ball to the opponent’s goal and score points. Soccer was played in England in the 11th century. The ball was advanced only by kicking it. In 1839, rugby was born when a frustrated English soccer player picked up the ball and ran down the field with it. Soccer was played by American college students in the 1800s, but the game was called “football”. Then, in 1874, a new form of the football game developed that combined both soccer and rugby. Players not only kicked the ball but advanced it by running with it and passing it to teammates. 3.American football developed into a rough(粗暴的) contact sport. Becauseprotective(防护的) equipment was not used in those days, it was quite dangerous. In 1905, 18 players were killed and 159 seriously injured(受伤的).President Roosevelt threatened to ban(明令禁止) football if the roughness(粗暴) did not stop. The rules committee(委员会) began changing the rules and eventually football developed into the game as it is today.4.The basic idea of football is very simple. The team that has the ball runs with it orthrows or kicks it toward the o ther team’s goal. Each time the team reaches the other’s goal, it scores a certain number of points. The other team tries to stop them. They want to get the ball so that they can score. The team that scores the most points wins the game.5.The teams play for one hour, divided into four quarters. There is always ahalftime break of at least 15 minutes. The teams are allowed timeouts (暂时休息), which are times when the clock is stopped and the team can get together to talk about strategy(策略). The clock is also stopped when players are injured and when there are penalties(判罚) given out for playing against the rules.Sometimes new players are substituted(取代,换下) for those who have already played. There are also breaks(插播广告的间隙) for television commercials. With all this going on, the one-hour game can easily take up to two and a half or three hours!。

The origin of professional football can be traced back to 1892, with William "Pudge" Heffelfinger's $500 contract to play in a game for the Allegheny Athletic Association against the Pittsburgh Athletic Club. The first Professional "league" was the Ohio League, formed in 1903, and the first Professional Football championship game was between the Buffalo Prospects and the Canton Bulldogs in 1919. In 1920, the American Professional Football Association was formed. The first game was played in Dayton, Ohio on October 3, 1920 with the host Triangles defeating the Columbus Panhandles 14–0.
The popularity of collegiate football grew as it became the dominant version of the sport for the first half of the twentieth century. Bowl games, a college football tradition, attracted a national audience for collegiate teams. Bolstered by fierce rivalries, college football still holds widespread appeal in the US.[9][10][11]
American football is closely related to Canadian football, but with significant differences.[1]
In the United States, the major forms are high school football, college football and professional football, which are essentially similar but feature slightly different rules.[2] There have been numerous major professional football leagues in the U.S., although the only one currently in existence is the National Football League (NFL). The sport is also played outside the United States. National professional and collegiate leagues exist in United Kingdom, Germany, Italy,[3] Switzerland,[4] Finland, Sweden,[5] Japan, Mexico, Israel,[6] Spain, Austria,[7] and several Pacific Island nations.
History of American football
An American football team at the turn of the twentieth centuryPrimitive forms of rugby, then all covered by the name "football", were being played in the USA as far back as the 1840s, at Harvard, Yale and Princeton, stemming partly from Americans who had been educated in English schools.[8] The history of American football can be traced to early versions of rugby football and association football (called soccer in the United States). Both games have their origins in varieties of football played in the United Kingdom in the mid-19th century, in which a ball is kicked at a goal and/or run over a line. Walter CampAmerican football resulted from several major divergences from rugby football, most notably the rule changes instituted by Walter Camp, considered the "Father of American Football". Among these important changes were the introduction of the line of scrimmage and of down-and-distance rules. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, game play developments by college coaches such as Eddie Cochems, Amos Alonzo Stagg, Knute Rockne, and Glenn "Pop" Warner helped take advantage of the newly introduced forward pass.
introduction
American football, known in the United States simply as football and often as gridiron or tackle football outside North America, is a competitive team sport known for combining strategy with physical play. The objective of the game is to score points by advancing the ball into the opposing team's end zone. The ball can be advanced by carrying it (a running play) or by throwing it to a teammate (a passing play). Points can be scored in a variety of ways, including carrying the ball over the opponent's goal line, catching a pass thrown over that goal line, kicking the ball through the goal posts at the opponent's end zone, or tackling an opposing ball carrier within his end zone. The winner is the team with the most points when the time expires.
The league changed its name to the National Football League (NFL) two years later, and eventually became the major league of American football. Initially a sport of Midwestern industrial towns in the United States, professional football eventually became a national phenomenon. Football's increasing popularity is usually traced to the 1958 NFL Championship Game, a contest that has been dubbed the "Greatest Game Ever Played". A rival league to the NFL, the American Football League (AFL), began play in 1960; the pressure it put on the senior league led agues and the creation of the Super Bowl, which has become the most watched television event in the United States on an annual basis.[12]
The rule
The Object of the Game is that two teams of fifteen players each, should by carrying, passing, kicking and grounding the ball score as many points as possible; the team scoring the greater number of points being the winner of the match. Scoring Points Try: This happens when a player grounds the ball (applies pressure on the ball) in the opponents in-goal area. This is worth 5 points. Penalty Try: A Penalty Try is given when an opponent would've scored a try but the opponent commits foul play. This too is worth 5 points. Conversion Goal: A conversion is kicked when a players team scores a try and has the opportunity to gather 2 extra points. Penalty: A penalty, worth 3 points, is scored when a player kicks a goal from a penalty kick. A penalty is awarded when an opponent commits a foul. Dropped Goal: Finally, a drop goal, also worth 3 points, is scored when a player kicks a goal from a drop kick in general play. Off-side and On-side in General Play
