The smartphone application lets site supervisors take photos of cracks or damaged paint, share them with employees and track the problems to solution.More than 600 subcontractors used the pilot version in many building sites before the commercial version, called Closeout, officially launched.Feedback(反馈)was so good that they began to wonder: Why limit their invention to a specific industry? Why not turn it into some kind of a handy tool for consumers too? This became their dilemma. In other words, should they stay the course or look for wider applications of their app?The experts polled all agreed Bridgit should stay focused on its original goal. Ms. Hasegawa and Ms. Brodie took that advice. As more business customers signed on, it became clear that they made the right decision. Since then, the company’s growth has been rapid.Earlier this year, Bridgit launched Closeout, which is designed so that even the least tech-savvy can use it easily. Today, the app is being used on sites across Canada and the United States and even by top general contractors. In October, Bridgit was named to the Canadian Innovation Exchange’s top 20 list of Canada’s most innovative (创新的) companies working in digital media and information and communication technology .But Ms. Hasegawa and Ms. Brodie are not resting on their glories. They have also been collecting feedback on Closeout from customers, and they’ll launch a new version in the spring. Graduates’ smartphone application plays an important role in our lifeDIf you want to convince the boss you deserve a pay rise or promotion, the solution could be simple—eat the same food as they do. Psychologists have discovered managers are much more likely to instantly trust us if we choose the same dishes as them.During experiments, discussions over wages and work conditions were much more successful if both sides chose to snack on the same treats. And shoppers were much more likely to buy a product advertised on TV by someone eating a similar food to them at the time. The reason is thought to be so-called similarity attraction theory – w here people tend to like others who have similar tastes or habits to themselves. But this is believed to be one of the first studies highlighting the role of food in this relationship. Researchers at Chicago University in the US conducted a series of experiments to examine food’s role in earning trust. In a test, participants were told to watch TV – where someone pretending to be a member of the public praised a certain product. The volunteers were given Kit Kat bars to nibble, while the TV people ate either a Kit Kat or grapes as they talked. The results showed viewers were much more likely to express an interest in buying the product if the TV showed the other person eating a Kit Kat too.The researchers added, “Although similarity in food consumption is not a sign of whether two people will get along, we find consumers treat this as such. They feel more trusting of those who consume as they do. It means people can immediately begin to feel friendship and develop a bond, leading to smoother transactions from the start.’Harley Street psychologist Dr Lucy Atcheson said it was already known that wearing similar clothes could instantly create trust. But this was the first report that food had the same effect. She said, “This is really interesting. It makes sense as people feel they have common ground and can trust the other person. That means negotiations are more likely to be successful.12. According to the passage, customers are likely to buy a product from a dealer who______.A. has the same taste as themB. advertises his products on TVC. reduces the price of his productsD. pays attention to the quality of his products13. The experiments conducted by researchers at Chicago University show that ______.A. people who have similar tastes to their boss’s earn moreB. bosses like employees that have the same taste as themC. food plays an important role in earning people’s trustD. people have less interest in buying products advertised on TV14 What can be inferred from the passage?A. People will get along with each other if they like to eat similar things.B. People who eat similar food are more likely to trust each other.C. The effect of wearing similar clothes hasn’t been proved by researchers.D. People are more likely to make friends with those wearing the same clothes as them.15. Which of the following sayings can be an example of the similarity attraction theory?A. Honesty is the best policy.B. All good things come to an end.C. Where there is a will, there is a way.D. In every part of the world, languages are disappearing. In fact, one scientist has said that languages are in more danger of etinction than birds or mammals. Professor Steve Sutherland of the University of East Anglia says that in the past500years4.5percent of languages have died out---compared with 1.3percent of birds, and 1.9percent of mammals.Languages come and go, and thousands have done eactly that without leaving any trace. Only a very few---Basque, Gree and Latin among them---have lasted more than 2,000years. But it seems that the pace of their disappearance is becoming quicer.Languages may be lost through migration(迁移),as people move from small towns to city centers, or when environments are destroyed by the search for oil or wood. Natural disasters can also devastate populations, and along with them, their language. Government also play a role in the etinction of languages. The need to establish“official languages”,for a country to educate its children and carry out its business , had a disastrous effect on many small languages. What is lost if a language is lost? Some people argue that language die as the human race develops.Obviously there could be great benefits if everyone in the world spoe the same language---some industries already reflect this, with English essential for pilots and air traffic controllers. But there are more important things than convenience. As languages are lost, whole ways of life and nowledge may be lost along with them.To put it simply, language epresses something about identity, about our place in the world. The burden is different between countries, so it tends to be higher in low and middle income countries and lower in high income countries. Policy-maers had made an effort to bring depression to the forefront, but there was a lot more wor to be done.”“There’s lots of stigma(恶名) we now related to mental health,” Dr. Alie Ferrari eplained. “What one person recognie as disabling might be different to another person and might be different across countries as well. There are lots of cultural effects and eplanations that come in place, which maes it all the more important to raise awareness of the sie of the problem and how to find depression.”The data---for the years 2010---follows similar studies in 1990 and 2000looing at the global burden of depression. Commenting on the study, Dr. Daniel Chisholm, a health economist at the department for mental health and substance abuse at the WHO said depression was a very disabling condition.“It’s a big public health challenge and a big problem to be thought but not enough is being done. And that's just because the more I practiced, the more nervous I got. So there I was, on the stage, in my beautiful dress, and I sat down at the piano. But when I started to play,I hit a wrong note. I told myself to start over. But then I hit the wrong note again. It was as if I hadn't practiced at all. Finally the disaster was over. I ran off the stage. Encouragement from the audienceCThere is an English saying that “Laughter is the best medicine.” Until recently, few people took the saying seriously. Now however, doctors have begun to look into laughter and the effects it has on the human body. They have found that laughter can really improve people's health, can benefit us both physically and psychologically in a great way.Tests were carried out to study the effects of laughter on the body. People watched funny films while doctors checked their hearts, blood pressure, breathing and muscles. It was found that laughter has similar effects to physical exercise. It increases blood pressure, makes the heart beat quicker and makes people breathe deeper; it also works on several groups of muscles in the face, the stomach, and even the feet. If laughter exercises the body, it must be beneficial.Other tests have shown that laughter appears to be able to reduce the effects of pain on the body. In one experiment doctors produced pain in groups of students who listened to different radio programs. The group that tolerated(忍耐)the pain for the longest time was the group which listened to a funny program. The reason why laughter can reduce pain seems to be that it helps to produce a kind of chemical in the brain which diminishes both stress and pain.As a result of these discoveries, some doctors in the United States now hold laughter clinics, in which they help to improve their patients' condition by encouraging them to laugh. They have found that even if their patients do not really feel like laughing, making them smile is enough to produce beneficial(有益的) effects similar to those caused by laughter.7. According to the passage, which of the following statements is WRONG?A. Laughter is good for healthB. Laughter can make you become old quicklyC. Laughter helps to reduce pain.D. Laughter, just like physical exercise, is good for our body.8. The underlined word “diminishes” in the third paragraph means_____.A. delaysB. preventsC. increasesD. reduces9. Why do some doctors hold laughter clinics?A. Because they want to earn more money.B. Because they think they will help the patients recover from illnesses.C. Because they want to improve their patients' condition.D. Because they want their patients to practice how to laugh10.According to the author, we should__________.A. laugh as much as possibleB. watch more funny filmsC. smile all the timeD. spend more time in laughter clinicsDAmerica is a mobile society. Friendships between Americans can be close and real, yet disappear soon if situations change. Neither side feels hurt by this, which seems uncountable for people in oriental(东方的) cultures. Both may exchange Christmas greetings for a year or two, perhaps a few letters for a while — then no more. If the same two people meet again by chance, even years later, they pick up the friendship. This can be quite difficult for us Chinese to understand, because friendships between us flower more slowly but then may become lifelong feelings, extending (延伸) sometimes deeply into both families.Americans are ready to receive us foreigners at their homes, share their holidays, and their home life. They will enjoy welcoming us and be pleased if we accept their hospitality (好客) easily.Another difficult point for us Chinese to understand Americans is that although they include us warmly in their personal everyday lives, they don't show their politeness to us if it requires a great deal of time. This is usually the oppositeof the practice in our country where we may be generous with our time. Sometimes, we, as hosts, will appear at airports even in the middle of the night to meet a friend. We may take days off to act as guides to our foreign friends. The Americans, however, express their welcome usually at homes, but truly can not manage the time to do a great deal with a visitor outside their daily routine. They will probably expect us to get ourselves from the airport to our own hotel by bus. And they expect that we will phone them from there. Once we arrive at their homes, the welcome will be full, warm and real. We will find ourselves treated hospitably. For the Americans, it is often considered more friendly to invite a friend to their homes than to go to restaurants, except for purely business matters. So accept their hospitality at home!11.The writer of this passage must be ________.A. an AmericanB. a ChineseC. a professorD. a student12.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?A. This is usually the opposite of the practice in our country where we may be generous with our time.
