Memorizing vocabulary and listening to lectures on grammar are slow, inefficient ways to learn a new
language. The best way to truly learn and commit new material to memory is through conversation. In our Spanish
classes, students can expect to speak up to 80% of each class. By speaking in the new language freely and
consistently, students can see progress faster because they are using the new grammar and vocabulary that they
have learned at the same time. This helps the brain remember the new words and grammar structures for future
use, making it much easier to progress.

When I was 9, we packed up our home in Los Angeles and arrived atHeathrow, London on a gray January
morning. Everyone in the family settled quickly into the city except me. Without my beloved beaches and endless
blue—sky days, I felt at a loss and out of place. Until I made a discovery.
Southbank, at an eastern bend in the Thames, is the center of British skateboarding, where the continuous
crashing of skateboards left your head ringing .I loved it. I soon made friends with the local skaters. We spoke our
own language. And my favorite: Safe. Safe meant cool. It meant hello. It meant don't worry about it. Once, when
trying a certain trick on the beam（横杆）, I fell onto the stones, damaging a nerve in my hand, and Toby came over,
helping me up: Safe, man. Safe. A few minutes later, when I landed the trick, my friends beat their boards loud,
shouting: “Safe! Safe! Safe!” And that's what mattered—landing tricks, being a good skater.
When I was 15, my family moved to Washington. I tried skateboarding there, but the locals were far less
welcoming. Within a couple of years, I'd given it up.
When I returned to London in 2004, I found myself wandering down to Southbank, spending hours there. I've
traveled back several times since, most recently this past spring. The day was cold but clear: tourists and
Londoners stopped to watch theskaters. Weaving（穿梭）among the kids who rushed by on their boards, I found
my way to the beam. Then a rail—thin teenager, in a baggy white T—shirt, skidded（滑）up to the beam. He sat

马克思很早就针对人类空间的认识过程加以论述，他认为自从人类意识产生后，空间就被对象化。随着资本主义全球的进程，空间又被资本化、政治化。历史进程在生产力与生产关系的矛盾运动中演进，把联结生产力与生产关系的空间引入历史书写之中，是坚持历史唯物主义的必然要求。
中国传统的历史书写中有极具特色的空间观念，“天下观”就是其中之一。在“普天之下，莫非王土；率土之滨，莫非王臣”的逻辑之下，京师被设定为天下之中，由城墙拱卫，京城之中复有宫城，以居住皇室。京城周边或曰京兆或日顺天府，再外围则为“直隶”，南京为首都有南直隶，北京为首都有北直隶。直隶之外为行省。行省之外为藩属，通过朝贡制度维持联系。藩属之外则为蛮荒之地。这种同心圆结构的“空间”，既是地理物理和有形的，也是哲学、文化、历史和无形的。但是，中国传统的这种空间观念所代表和承载的政治文化、典章制度和生产关系，在近代资本主义列强的全球扩张中遭遇了巨大挑战。在书写中国近代以来历史的过程中，把中国这个空间作为世界的一部分，从而把中国历史视为世界近代史的一部分，已经成为前辈学人的遵循。可以说，正是空间观念的改变形成了新的历史书写。
历史研究实践表明，自觉在历史研究和历史书写中突出“空间”要素，有助于我们深化对历史的理解。比如，一部世界近代史，在很大程度上就是资本主义在全球扩张、强行复制其生产关系的历史，也就是资本主义在空间维度上排拒其他形式生产关系、进而改写其他空间政治建构和文化的历史。所谓“地理大发现”，其本质是欧洲列强在完全陌生的空间中强行复制其政治、经济、宗教、文化乃至国家结构的过程，其结果不仅仅是当地土著和维京人早已“发现”美洲的历史被改写，整个人类近代史的叙述结构和价值取向都被改变。再进一步看，在第二次世界大战中，各参战国基本依赖工业区和工业生产能力，而中国却在很大程度上依赖落后的大后方支撑全面抗战。落后的大后方经历了怎样的改造，生产了什么样的产品，以至于能支撑如此长久的全面抗战？从“空间”要素入手，显然可以深化对这些问题的研究。
