To get there, we had to walk a mile. But our weekly journeys to the library were a piece of perfection. I had around me at one time all the people I loved best-my father and mother and brothers and sister--and all the things I loved best- quiet, space and books.I read a lot of books about science: not the spaceships my brothers preferred, but the birds and the bees--literally. I brought home a book of birds and searched the trees for anything other than robins (知更鸟). I went through a phrase of loving books with practical science experiments and used up a whole bottle of white vinegar by pouring it on the sides of our apartment building to prove that it was constructed of limestone (石灰石).One Saturday, as I wandered through the young adult section, I saw a title: Little Women, by Lousia May Alcott. I had learned from experience that titles weren’t everything. A book that sounded great on the shelf could be dull once you got it home. So I sat in a chair near the shelves to skim the first paragraphs.I read and read and read Little Women until it was time to walk home, and, except for a few essential interruptions like sleeping and eating, I did not put it down until the end. Even the freedom to watch weekend television held no appeal for me in the wake of Alcott' s story. It was about girls, for one thing, girls who could almost be like me, especially Jo. I had found someone who thought and felt the way I did.4. What can we say about the author’s family?A. They enjoyed traveling abroad.B. They were library frequenters.C. Book titles can sometimes be misleading.B. Science books are as interesting as novels.C. The first few paragraphs of a book are attractive.D. Books seem duller when read in libraries than at home.7. How would the author describe Little Women?A. It helped her to discover her true character.B. It made her forget about food and sleep.C. It inspired confidence in her.D. It kept her absorbed.CA nurse has fulfilled (实现) a promise she made to her patient four years ago to one day attend her daughter's graduation from nursing school.Edina Habibovic, 22, graduated from Chamberlain University's College of Nursing in 2020. Her mother, Sevala Habibovic, 46, died in2017 after a two year fight with breast cancer.“I thought the medical field wasn't for me. By managing to become Edina's colleagueDEvery racehorse has different abilities.Like humans, some are short- distance runners, while others are marathoners.Figuring out which is which and how to pace them can be the difference between failure in the finish and taking the award home.Jockeys(赛马骑师)and trainers have traditionally relied on centuries of experience and data from previous races to plan their races.Amandine Aftalion,a mathematician in Paris, thought she could add to that.Since 2013,she has been analyzing the performances of world champion runners like Usain Bolt. She has found that short-distance runners tend to win when they start strong and gradually slow down toward the finish line.Butin medium-distance races, runners perform better when they start strong, settle down, and finish with a burst of speed. Her model shows how those winning strategies maximize the energy output of muscles reliant on two different pathways:powerful aerobic(有氧的)ones that require oxygen, which can be in limited supply during a race, and anaerobic ones, which don't need oxygen but build up waste products that lead to tiredness.Aftalion wondered which strategy would be best for horses. So she and Quentin Mercier, anothermathematician, took advantage of a new GPS tracking tool inserted in French racing saddles(马鞍).The two studied patterns in many races at the Chantilly racetracks north of Paris and developed a model that accounted for winning strategies for three different races:a short one(1,300 meters),a medium one (1,900 meters),and a slightly longer one (2,100 meters),all with different starting points on the same track. The model takes into account not just different race distances, but also the size or friction fromthe track surface. The results might surprise jockeys who hold horses back early for bursts of energy in the last finish.Instead,a strong start leads to a better finish, the team found.“That doesn't mean those jockeys are wrong, though. If the start is too strong,it can bedevastatingas well, leaving the horse tired by the end,” Aftalion says.12. What should a runner do to get an award according to the text?A. Make a good start.B. Plan for the race early.C. Run slowly on the starting line.D. Try runningquickly all the time.13. What formed the basis for Aftalion's studying horse race?A The experience and data from previous horse races.B. The benefit of knowing horses' different abilities.C. The success in studying runners' winning strategies.D. The performance of horses on different race distances.14. What does the underlined word“devastating”in the last paragraph mean?A. Boring.B. Damaging.C. Astonishing.D. Puzling.15. What can we infer from the text?A. Runners have the same energy output of muscles.B. Aftalion's findings may help horses to win the race.C. What Jockeys and trainers do makes no sense to horses.D. World champion runners made a contribution to the study.

Her story in particular has drawn the public’s attention given her young age. Social media users have been celebrating her brilliance and referring to her as pride of the country.Being the youngest of the team, Zhou Chengyu was born in1996 intheprovinceofGuizhou. She is certainly not “old” enough compared with her colleagues, but she is known at work as "Big Sister” as a sign of respect. Once in a 3-km running contest, she actually beat half of her male counterparts. Although work shifts are not uncommon at the Wenchang Spacecraft Launch Site, each shift requires tremendous courage because of the different background knowledge. Eating snacks and shopping are her favorite free-time activities. Her high school teacher remembers her as tough and determined. “She always had a dream of becoming scientist,” said her physics teacher.According to her colleague, Zhou Chengyu was very surprised when she found out shewent viralonline. She said that she was happy when she saw people online regarding her as the pride of the country, and yet she kept saying that she was “nobody but normal worker at a launch site” and there are a lot more people just like her going unnoticed while doing the hardest job to guarantee a better future for the Chinese space program. She also said that she wished to remain her current status and continue doing her work with or without the popularity.8. What makes Zhou Chengyu the pride of the country?A. Her young age.B. Her vital role in her work.C. Her great courage.D. Her responsibility at work.9. Which of the following words can best describe Zhou Chengyu?A. Learned and confident.B. Respectable and generous.C. What can be the best title for the text?A. A Young PrideB. A Successful ColleagueC. An Extraordinary DreamD. An Ambitious CommanderDIf you could travel back in time, which period of history would you visit? It’s a great question to ask your friends, and time travel is the subject of many science fiction films. Of course, sci-fi is familiar to most of us, butwhat is cli-fi? The simple answer is climate fiction which focuses on the subject of climate change. Many of the cli-fi examples we watch tend to be disaster films. It could be solar flares (太阳耀斑), ice ages devastating (摧毁) the planet, extreme flooding swamping the earth with water, or super-storms that threaten life as we know it. While films and novels of this style are often subject to the typical images of a hero or heroine battling to save the day, what sets it apart from most sci-fi films is that the plots will often draw on apparently reasonable outcomes in the near future.Climate change and the potential threats have long been established. Some believe that the issue of climate change has even led to more fans watching films to learn more about what's happening to the world – seeing it as a form of edutainment. A study conducted by the Yale programme on Climate Change Communication tested the effects that two climate fiction novels can have on its readers and found “significant positive effects” in terms of their attitudes and beliefs towards the climate crisis – for example, understanding global warming will harm them and future generations. Most climate films are not only extremely popular action films, but also cause our fear of what some see as the approaching end of the world. This sounds bad, but according to a study conducted on 310 adults in the US, watching such scary films can help us feel more prepared and less alone in situations such as the pandemic (疫情). So, it looks like cli-fi is hereto stay – and there seem to be some benefits. Whether it’s there to educate, entertain or prepare you for a climate crisis, it might have a role to play.12. Which of the following may be the subject of cli-fi?A. Time travel.B. Global warming.C. Weather forecast.D. Economic climate.13. What can we learn about cli-fi films from paragraph 2?A. They are often about extreme natural disasters.B. They want to show that man can conquer nature.C. They usually have similar plots with sci-fi films.D. They can show the true near future of the world.14. Why is the study conducted by the Yale programme mentioned in paragraph 3?A. To prove that climate change has potential threats.B. To show that people like climate fiction novels.C. To tell that cli-fi novels have positive effects on readers.D. To explain how the climate crisis affect the human being.15. What does the writer mainly want to tell us in the last paragraph?A. Cli-fi films are very popular as action films.B. A study was conducted on 310 adults in theUS.C. The pandemic make people scared and alone.D. Cli-fi films are useful and will be here to stay.

And now, researchers from theUniversityofWashingtonhave developed an artificial intelligence system that enables these devices to monitor heartbeats.Using technology to remotely monitor heart rates isn't new. These days most smartwatches and fitness trackers are capable of it. The good thing here is that researchers have figured out a way to use the microphones in smart speakers to do it without requiring physical contact. In a study published inCommunications Biology, the researchers had the smart speakers send out signals that couldn't be heard which were then reflected off a person's body. They then analyzed these signals to identify small chest wall motions related to heartbeats, as well as separate those signals from surrounding noise and breathing. For this particular proof — of — concept setup, the researchers tested this smart speaker on 26 healthy participants and 24 hospitalized patients with various heart conditions, including atrial fibrillation(心房颤动)and heart failure. In both cases, the smart speaker was within 28 -30 milliseconds of an ECG(心电图),the gold standard used in hospitals to discover arrhythmia(心律不齐).Like smartwatches with advanced heart features, using smart speakers in this way opens up the possibility for passive, remote heart monitoring. ECGs, while highly accurate, require a visit to the doctor and several electrodes (电极)to be placed on the body. They,re not capable of continuous monitoring so you're limited to what it picks up at that exact moment in time ——one reason why heart arrhythmia can be so hard to discover.Smartwatches are capable of passive, remote, continuous monitoring, but they require you to wear the device at all times to be effective. It's not something that's comfortable for everyone, especially when it comes to sleep and for those with highly sensitive skin. Another issue is that these advanced smartwatches are expensive, while smart speakers are much cheaper.“If you have a device like this, you can monitor a patient on an extended basis and then develop corresponding care plans that satisfy the patient' s needs,“ said Dr. Arun Sridhar, co — senior author on the study. "And the beauty of using this kind of devices is that they are already in people's homes.”8. What does the author focus on in Paragraph 3?A. How the smart speaker works.B. Why the smart speaker is useful.C. The advantages of smart speakers.D. The importance of the study.9. Why is heart arrhythmia difficult to find?A. ECGs are not highly accurate.B. ECGs can't monitor continuously.C. Doctors know little about heart arrhythmia.D. An ECG test is hard to operate and expensive.10. Which statement best explains the characteristics of smartwatches?A. They are comfortable to wear.B. They are friendly to sensitive skin.C. They are effective and cheap.D. They are able to monitor remotely.11. What can we infer from the last paragraph?A. We need to invent more smart devices.B. Care plans are vital to patients with heart failure.C. Smart speakers could be contactless heart monitors.D. Different devices are needed to meet patients, demands.DTen years ago, I set out to examine luck. I wanted to know why some people were always in the right place at the right time, while others consistently experienced ill fortune. I placed advertisements in national newspapers asking for people who felt consistently lucky or unlucky. Hundreds of extraordinary men and women volunteered for my research. Over the years I have interviewed them, monitored their lives and had them take part in various experiments. In one of the experiments, I gave both lucky and unlucky people a newspaper, asking them to look through it and tell me how many photographs were inside. I had secretly placed a large message halfway through the newspaper, saying, “Tell the experimenter you have seen this and you will win $50.” This message took up half of the page and was written in type that was more than two inches high. It was staring everyone in the face, but the unlucky people tended to miss it and the lucky people tended to spot it.Unlucky people are generally more nervous than lucky people, and this anxiety affects their ability to notice the unexpected. As a result, they miss opportunities because they are too focused on looking for something else. They go to gatherings concentrating on finding their perfect partners and miss opportunities to make good friends. They look through newspapers determined to find certain types of job advertisements and miss other types of jobs.Lucky people are more relaxed and open, and therefore see what is there rather than just what they are looking for. My research eventually showed that lucky people are skilled at noticing opportunities, make lucky decisions by listening to their intuition (直觉), are open to new experiences, and adopt a never-say-die attitude that transforms bad luck into good luck.12. What’s the purpose of the author’s research?A. To discover what luck means to people.B. To find lucky people and unlucky people.C. To distinguish between good luck and bad luck.D. To figure out why people are always lucky or unlucky.13. Why did the unlucky people miss the message in the experiment?A. There was too much information to be read in detail.B. They were too focused on looking for photographs.C. It took too much time to go through newspapers.D. The words were too small to be noticed.14. What leads to lucky people’s good fortune?A. Their ability to spot opportunities.B. Their ability to become relaxed.C. Their ability to communicate.D. Their ability to make friends.15. What’s the key message of the last paragraph?A. What lucky people are looking for.B. How lucky people generate good luck.C. What lucky people can do with opportunities.D How lucky people transform bad luck into good luck.
