I think the theme of this novel is to criticize the cruel of utter class people. During the words we can profoundly feel that Sophie as a servant has had a miserable life.
This novel was started with the quarrel of Madame and Monsieur. After a fierce quarrel with her husband, Madame decided to leave for Rome. So she asked her servant Sophie—a quite old woman who had a yellow face and blue teeth to pack at once. Though Sophie felt very tired and unwilling, she still had to drag the heavy trunk after her. In fact, Sophie was extraordinary weak, as a servant she had to tolerate Madame’s bad temper. As Madame was subject to changing moods, Sophie had to work extremely hard to get her satisfaction. What’s more, she had to be cautious enough to response Madame’s need. Whenever she called her or switched the bell, Sophie had to appear in front of her in time. As the result of this, Sophie was to such a degree enervated.
Meanwhile, Madame thought Sophie was so ugly and disgust, she even asked Sophie to put some rough on her cheeks. At last, after a few times’ decorate, Sophie looked far better.
In my opinion, I think Madame was a typical object of utter
class people. They always sit around and spent their time in attending the parties. While, the people who had a low status had to work hard everyday to support their family. It is not equal, while, we could do nothing but sympathy them. And I hope that one day all people can be treat equally.。
