Abstract: Several countries’ governments are producing mandatory regulations of automotive engineering to reduce CO2 emission and fuel consumption. The electric vehicles are one of the results by engineers' special efforts. This paper gives a wider view of innovation of automotive engineering and a look into the future. Technology trends include that 1) More Intelligent driver assistance systems can be distinguished into safety functions, comfort functions, traffic efficiency improvement and environmental effect reduction; 2) Body technology is determined by the used materials with competition between multi-materials, steel, and carbon fibres; 3) Chassis technology is improved by integrated vehicle dynamics control, active suspension components and material application; 4) Drive trains are converted into hybrid-drives with intelligent solutions on the horizon for these hybrid gearboxes, but also for four-wheel drive systems; 5) Electronic control is focusing on central control modules, the mobile phone for quite new applications and inventions for car lighting. Innovation in Automotive Engineering: A look into the future
1 Driver Assistance Research
There have been project presentations for public funded traffic research in Germany [1] at the end of 2012. In the past, the new systems focussed on the car itself, now there are the interests in connecting the cars for co-operative ITS (Intelligent Transportation System) systems. The single car is more and more becoming a partner in road traffic. Up to now the cars identified critical driving conditions by knowing the status of the vehicle and the driver’s reactions. Now, by combining radar sensors and cameras the car identifies the environment around the car and the situation is identified. The researchers (Project simTD) [2] name this condition “seeing” of the car. The next step is “speaking and hearing”. The driver will be informed about potentially critical situations, even behind the normal horizon. The expression “telematic horizon” is introduced. It means that information is exchanged to identify the situation and to give warnings to all participants in traffic. This is expressed by “co-operation”. All these efforts are worked on in a field test with 120 cars being involved. The research is done on public roads, on special test fields in urban areas and in driving simulators (www:simTD.de). This research work is a prerequisite for the introduction of driver assistance systems. Another very exiting research project in Germany is named “UR:BAN” [3]. It continues the former research projects, which are named in Fig. 1 with respect to their development time. The UR:BAN project is covering the headlines: Cognitive Assistance – Connected traffic systems – Human in traffic. Cognitive Assistance means, like simTD, the surrounding and environmental detection and modelling, the assistance for protection of pedestrian and cyclists as well as assistants for crash-avoiding manoeuvres and the early information about the clearance of the horizon together with the lateral and longitudinal control support. With connected traffic systems the researchers characterise cooperative infrastructures. With strategic routing they will optimize the necessary energy for the cars. Foresighted driving is dealing with the already mentioned electronic horizon, the optimisation of energy consumption and even the avoidance of traffic light stops. Tactical driving is mainly correlated to smart intersections. Waiting, acceleration and decision-making are the headlines for this research area.
