Oliver

Oliver in Oliver TwistI think Oliver is a good boy. You know there's a problem when the most interesting character in a film called Oliver Twist is a supporting woman named Nancy. Technically sound and surprisingly faithful to its source material, Roman Polanski's version of Oliver Twist comes across as uninspired and flat. Only two performances - that of Leanne Rowe as Nancy Sikes and Jamie Foreman as Bill Sikes - have energy. The biggest deficiency is Barney Clark, whose performance as the title character vacillates between befuddlement and artificial weepiness (rarely have I seen more crocodile tears). For the story to work, sympathy with Oliver is mandatory, but Clark's acting and Polanski's direction keep the character at arm's length. I cared about Nancy and wanted Bill to get his comeuppance, but Oliver seems inconsequential. At its heart, Oliver Twist is a story of misery relieved by the occasional expression of kindness. Its one of the novels that feeds into the term "Dickensian." Oliver's life is tragic. He begins the story at an orphanage, but is soon kicked out for bad behavior. His next stop is working for a coffin-maker, but mistreatment causes him to run away. After a cruel, seven-day trek to London, he meets Artful Dodger (Harry Eden) and becomes one of the merry band of thieves ruled by the avaricious Fagin (Ben Kingsley). A chance encounter with a wealthy businessman, Mr. Brownlow (Edward Hardwicke),* gives Oliver a chance at a better life, but Fagin and his cutthroat associate, Bill Sikes, are unwilling to let him move on. They find a way to pull him back in and use Mr. Brownlow's affection for Oliver to their advantage. Only Nancy, Bill's wife, shows compassion for poor Oliver. Polanski's interpretation is very much a Masterpiece Theater style adaptation. It looks good and hits all the high points, but is cool and unemotional.Dickens was an excellent writer of melodrama. Tears while reading his books are common. But not so with this version of Oliver Twist. And, while there is humor in the book and humor in the movie, the two don't always occur in the same places. There are times when Oliver Twist is unintentionally farcical, which is a bad thing. It shatters the tone. But the period detail is impeccable (or at least so it seems to an untrained eye). As I mentioned, the acting standouts are Leanne Rowe, whose list of previous credits is small, and Jamie Foreman, a familiar character actor who was most recently seen as The Duke in Layer Cake. Bill is fearsome, a true cinematic villain, and Foreman's performance stands alongside any of the greats who have played the part in the past. Would that the same could be said of Ben Kingsley. Alec Guinness fans need not worry. Kingsley's campy interpretation of the story's most diabolical character comes close to character assassination, turning Fagin into a bumbling, sniveling wretch. The definitive filmed version of Oliver Twist remains David Lean's 1948 edition. Polanski's new adaptation comes close only in the way it looks. In every other aspect, it is inferior. Even the pace is off. Parts of 2005's Oliver Twist rush by in an instant, making it apparent that things were cut or condensed. Other parts of needlessly prolonged, leading to audience disinterest. As an introduction to the story for someone with no previous exposure to Oliver Twist, Polanski's movie is adequate. And Dickens "completists" will also want to see it. For everyone else, however, the appeal is as limited as the director's shortsighted vision.I think Oliver is a kind pure and honest tender child. He is born in misery, in the dark and full of sins of the world growth, but in his mind always protect holding a pure heaven and earth, a kind heart, all kinds of hardships can't make him fall or thoroughly ccorrupt. Instead more show himthe chaste sparking and quality. Well worth people to learn. The Kite Runner of KhaledHosseini's deeply moving fiction debut is an illiterate Afghanistan's boy with an uncanny instinct for predicting exactly where a downed kite will land. Growing up in the city of Kabul in the early 1970s, Hassan was narrator Amir's closest friend even though the loyal 11-year-old with 'a face like a Chinese doll' was the son of Amir's father's servant and a member of Afghanistan's despised Hazara minority. But in 1975, on the day of Kabul's annual kite-fighting tournament, something unspeakable happened between the two boys.Narrated by Amir, a 40-year-old novelist living in California, The Kite Runner tells the gripping story of a boyhood friendship destroyed by jealousy, fear, and the kind of ruthless evil that transcends mere politics. Running parallel to this personal narrative of loss and redemption is the story of modern Afghanistan and of Amir's equally guilt-ridden relationship with the war-torn city of his birth. The first Afghan novel to be written in English, The Kite Runner begins in the final days of King Zahir Shah's 40-year reign and traces the country's fall from a secluded oasis to a tank-strewn battlefield controlled by the Russians and then the trigger-happy Taliban. When Amir returns to Kabul to rescue Hassan's orphaned child, the personal and the political get tangled together in a plot that is as suspenseful as it is taut with feeling. Two of the most difficult things for adapting a book to the big screen are to preserve the essence of the book and to not destroy the original intention of the author. And the extraordinary film The Kite Runner achieves both things. The Kite Runner is a masterpiece; a genuinely extraordinary film. In this film, every scene has a point to the story. There is not even one pointless scene. Screenwriter David Benioff made a wonderful job in adapting a book to the screenplay and his work should be taken as an example for adapting books. The actors are unknown but their performances in this movie are amazing. The kid actors are the ones which most surprised me because,in spite of their young age, they made perfect performances in some difficult scenes and they can express a lot of emotions without talking. Director Marc Forster also made a perfect work. His direction is absolutely precise and detailed and, now, more than ever,I am waiting to see Quantum of Solace. I'm sure he will not disappoint. The Kite Runner is an enormous masterpiece and one of the best(if not the best)films I have seen in a while. This movie is an absolute must see to any lover of the cinema and any casual spectator.Human nature is the same, a song of ice and fire power game.Recently watched the series TV a song of ice and fire power of the game ", the plot to British history as the background, tells the story of the story of several large family rivalries, interspersed with a variety of sensational, ugly, violent and erotic elements, but the general feeling is the struggle of power to bring people to the disaster, is played by actor James said:" feel insecure, who don't have a sense of security. Oliver Twist

Oliver Twist

Oliver TwistThe novel Oliver Twist, a masterpiece written by Charles Dickens, narrates the miserable life experience of an orphan, Oliver. After twists and frustrations, Oliver, however, had never been despondent without a shadow of a doubt about the bright prospects. At the end of the story, Oliver lived in peace and harmony, which reflects residual human nature under capitalism. This novel brought me sorrow, distress, but also warmth and hope. It was Fagin and Nancy who impressed me deeply rather than the hero.Fagin, an old, emaciated, untidy Jewish codger with messy red hair and a prong in hand, was portrayed as a typical villain. He was a symbol of the evils and the way he lived by, instigating and compelling a couple of children to steal and then dividing up the spoils, brimmed with evils. As the chief plotter of the gang, Fagin was insidious and scheming. Nevertheless, as is said by people, good and evil conflicts with each other but co-exist as parts of human nature, and there is no absolute good or evil. These had a reflection on Fagin, as he was a criminal as well as a tender old man. While he instigated children to steal, he took care of those children with patience. A kind old man, or a slave of money? It is hard to determine. But one thing for sure is that Fagin was a product of decadent British society and by portraying this character, the novel unveiled the fact that the poor were exploited in capitalism. As for Nancy, I commiserate with her misfortune and sympathize with her kindness. Although she wanted to be kind, she had no choice but to compromised her principles and stole, oppressed by grinding poverty. She yearned for bright future, nevertheless, her family and living environment became obstacles in her path to happiness. Her character was complicated; however, it cannot be denied that she had always been virtuous. Out of remorse for deceiving Oliver into returning to the gang, she finally sacrificed herself for protecting Oliver. It seems impossible for a man who has committed a sort of crimes to show mercy, but Nancy demonstrated the possibility. The tribulations of her life and the crimes witnessed had not degraded her; on the contrary, her kindness won happiness for Oliver at the end. Both Fagin and Nancy were epitomes of that generation, from whom we can find two opposites, good and evil. The story tells us that evil can never prevail over good, in that vicious power was destroyed and deserved punishment was inflicted on Fagin at the end. In the context of developing market economy, communication become more difficult as a consequence of increasing materialism and distrust between people. I hope everyone in our society could learn to trust each other, offer help when needed, fight with evil and hence build a warm society.。

Oliver Twist(excerpt)“Wolves tear your throats!”muttered Sikes, grinding his teeth.“I wish I was among some of you; you'd howl the hoarser for it.”As Sikes growled forth this imprecation, with the most desperate ferocity that his desperate nature was capable of,he rested the body of the wounded boy across his bended knee;and turned his head, for an instant,to look back at his pursuers. There was little to be made out,in the mist and darkness;but the loud shouting of men vi brated through the air,and the barking of the neighbouring dogs, roused by the sound of the alarm bell, resounded in every direction.“Stop, you whitelivered hound!”cried the robber, shouting after Toby Crackit, who, making the best use of his long legs, was already ahead.“Stop!”The repetition of the word, brought Toby to a dead standstill. For he was not quite satisfied that he was beyond the range of pistolshot;and Sikes was in no mood to be played with.“Bear a hand with the boy,”cried Sikes, beckoning furiously to his confederate.“Come back!”雾都孤儿(节选)“让狼咬断你们的脖子!”赛克斯小声地说,牙齿咬得格格直响。

The imperfect perfect
------Review of “Oliver Twist”
Nothing in this world is perfect, as the life of the poor orphan Oliver Twist, whose childhood was full of woeful experience. The workhouse, Oliver’s birthplace, was quite a bad memory. He was brought up under merciless condition in the workhouse, after that he was still suffered from an undertaker. No one in the town had mercy on him. Then he ran away to London, where he became a member of a gang of thieves by mistake, and they wanted to turn Oliver into a thief, they commanded him to steal, but he was always lucky enough to escape and rescued by some kind-hearted people, such as Mr. Brownlow, Mrs. Maylie, Rose, without whom he can never live a happy life. Nancy, an important role in the novel, she told the truth to Rose, preventing a tragedy designed by Fagin and Monks from happening, but she didn’t want to leave Sikes, her boss, and was finally murdered by him , so Nancy is a controversial figure in the novel . In the end, Oliver was adopted by Mr. Brownlow, and the villains were punished for their crime. A perfect ending, isn’t it? So, imperfect perfect was what I felt when I finished reading the novel.
Everyone’s life is different from each other, but at one point all of us are the same, that there are always something unhappy or something bitter happen in our life, which make our life not so perfect. So, what is the right attitude when we must face the terrible things? I think that we shouldn’t be afr aid of such things, for they are an essential part of our life, they can help us become stronger and stronger, also, by dealing with such matters, we can increase our abilities in how to survive in the cruel society. P(大写)eople react to bad things in different ways, some people hold a negative attitude towards them, so(可否去掉)when bad things happens ,the only thing they can do is just being sad, angry, then complain that it is unfair. But what is the results? T hose who are negative seldom be successful. On the contrary, some people, just like our hero Oliver Twist, have the strong faith to beat the difficulties, and never give up. When Oliver once came to this world, he suffered a lot, Fagin, Bumble, Monks……, it seems that everywhere is unsafe and full of evi l, but did Oliver give in? no, he not merely fought for his right ,but also kept his precious purity of heart , which I think brought him good luck to come through the fatal exam. I think the rest of his life would be a happy one because of the hardship he had once suffered. Compared to the other attitude, It is obvious that the way like Oliver’s is much more scientific.
The imperfect world do upset Oliver and all of us, but to our relief, Oliver conquer the reality and had a happy ending that made his life perfect, he got the best ending. So, when you feel the world is imperfect or unfair, don’t always complain about it, set a goal, then work hard to achieve it, and we are likely to turn the imperfect into perfect.
As the old saying goes, “no pain, no gain”. At last I want everyone to remember that, only through perseverance can we make the world perfect, free lunch is never exist.
Reading has finished, but thinking will never come to an end.。
