I dug in happily, feeling like I had really accomplished something big today.While the results wouldn't be available for a little while still, I already felt proud knowing I had prepared so hard and put forth my very best effort on this important test. As we drove out of the city, I looked back and waved goodbye to our hometown. "Goodbye Anhui, hello Beijing!" I shouted out the window.The drive took forever! We were in the car for what felt like days. Eric and I played all kinds of games to pass the time - We looked for license plates from different provinces, sang sillysongs, and read books and comics. Whenever we stopped for food or bathroom breaks, I loved getting out and stretching my legs.After two very long days of driving, we finally made it to Beijing! I'll never forget my first glimpse of the city skyline with its modern skyscrapers mixed in with ancient temples and palaces. As soon as we checked in, we headed straight for the swimming pool. Just getting there was an adventure. We drove for over an hour through the mountainous countryside outside of Beijing. When we finally arrived, I couldn't believe my eyes. It looked like a giant stone dragon guarding the land.Our tour guide told us the Great Wall is over 13,000 miles long and was built over 2,000 years ago. I was a little nervous at first because the stone path was quite steep and narrow in some spots. Mom and Dad held my hands to keep me steady. But after a little while, I got used to it and felt like a brave explorer conquering a medieval fortress.We hiked for a couple of hours, stopping frequently to catch our breath and admire the stunning views. Each watchtower and stretch of wall seemed more incredible than the last. I tried to imagine what it would have been like to stand guard there as an ancient soldier, scanning the horizon for enemies. Pretty crazy!After hiking, we had a delicious Beijing lunch of dumplings, noodles, and other yummy dishes. That night at the hotel, I crashed onto my bed utterly exhausted but very happy. Getting to walk along the Great Wall of China was a dream come true.Over the next few days, we explored more of Beijing's top attractions. We visited the massive Forbidden City palace where China's emperors used to live. We walked through lush gardens filled with colorful flowers, pagodas, and ponds with koi fish. We also went to Tiananmen Square which felt like the biggest open space I'd ever seen in my life.My favorite stop was the Beijing Zoo where we got to see amazing animals like giant pandas, golden monkeys,red-crowned cranes, and Chinese alligators. The pandas in particular were so cute and cuddly looking as they lazily munched on bamboo. I just wanted to give them all a big hug!After a fun-filled week of sightseeing, it was finally time to make the long drive back home to Anhui. As we pulled out of Beijing, I felt a little sad to be leaving such an incredible place behind. But I also couldn't wait to tell all my friends about my amazing Great Wall adventure.The ride home seemed to go much faster than the way there.I happily looked through all the photos and videos we had taken. We made a couple of stops along the way, but I just wanted to get home as quickly as possible so I could show off my new Beijing souvenirs and share my travel tales.When we finally made it back to our house, I ran inside shouting "We're home! We're home!" I was still wearing the Great Wall t-shirt I had gotten on the trip and refused to take it off for days. Every night at dinner, I raved about the sights and experiences we had in Beijing. Mom and Dad just smiled as I rehashed the trip for what was probably the hundredth time.That family vacation to see the Great Wall of China is a memory I will cherish forever. It opened my eyes to the wonders of history, travel, and new cultures. I feel so lucky my parents took me on such an incredible journey while I'm still a kid. Who knows where we'll go next year for our summer trip? Maybe we'll visit the Terracotta Warriors in Xi'an or take a cruise along the Yangtze River.
