My View on Studying Abroad
Recently, in order to acquire more knowledge, more and more students decide to further their education by studying abroad. Studying abroad can cultivate students’ abilities and change students’ lives. However, should all American students at JWU be required to study abroad? There are two different views on the matter of studying abroad. Some people believe that going abroad to study is a good experience for students. Therefore, they require students to go abroad to broaden their horizons. On the other hand, others think some students may not want to go abroad. We should consider students’ feeling s. In my opinion, studying abroad should not be required for all students because students will face life problems and the study problems.
First of all, if studying abroad is required some students will have some problems in their lives. If students have never been out of the country, they may feel culture shock in other countries. Different countries have different policies and customs; and thus, it’s hard to readjust to life abroad. For example, some people only like food from their own country. If they come to a new place, they would feel uncomfortable without their country’s food.Natalia Brophy, is an author in the website who agrees that going abroad to study will cause a culture shock to students. feel lonely and when they are sick they will be more apt to miss their family and friends. Whenever there is a festival or holiday, students will feel out of place if they do not understand the meaning of the holiday. Many students drop out from foreign university to come back home due to their homesickness.
Second of all, requiring students to study abroad will cause the students some study problems. Some people will think they can learn another language, but they did not think that other students use the language of their own country to study. International students not only need to study courses, but they also need to adapt to the language environment. They need to spend more time to studying the language. Brophy said that students will do homework at the same speed this will let the student feel the pressure. In addition, in other countries teaching methods and mode of thinking will be different. If students go to study abroad, they also need to change their thinking.” For example, American writing structure is different than Japanese. If students use American structure to write an assay, their professor will not give a good score to the students. If students cannot accept foreign thinking, their decision to abroad to study is a waste of time and money.
As a whole, overseas study is a good experience for students. It can broaden a student’s vision, but it is not necessary for all American students. Study abroad should not be required for all American students because some students will meet some life problems and some study problems. America also has a lot of universities that could offer good educations too. Some students may not want to go abroad. So we should be in accordance with the actual situation to make a decision.
