Important sentences
1…and were so well written that people still read them nowadays. (Page 2, lines 2-3)
so/such…that…引导结果状语从句的用法
这两种结构都可以引导结果状语从句,so是副词,后接形容词或者副词,such是形容词,后接名词.此外还需注意以下几点:
(1).在两者中间出现单数可数名词,且该名词前有形容词修饰时,二者可以互换:
so+adj.+a/an+n. ==such+a/an.+adj+n.
她是一位好老师以至于我们都非常喜欢

__________________________________________________________(so…that)
(2).如果被修饰的是复数可数名词或者不可数名词,只能用such…that…

另外当so...that..结构的so+形容词/副词位于句子开头,句子要用倒装结构.

that替代“the+单数名词(可数或不可数)”,是特指,that是指前面提到的“同类”事物。
以避免重复,those代替the+名词复数,指前面提到的“同类”事物.

would rather do ... than do ...“宁愿……而不愿……;与其……不如……”。
5.Pip dislikes it when Joe comes to visit him inLondon.
当乔来伦敦看他时,皮普并不乐意。
句中it是宾语,dislike it when ...是一个常用句型。
①He disliked it when she behaved badly in front of his mother.
他讨厌她在他母亲面前举止不当。
(1)like, enjoy, love, hate, dislike, appreciate等表“喜怒哀乐”的及物动词,需跟it再跟从句。
(2)see to, depend on, lie in等由动词和介词构成的动词短语后接that宾语从句时,先加形式宾语it,再接that从句。
②I would you could take me to watch the next Olympic Games. 如果您能带我去看下一届奥运会,我将不胜感激。
③I shall see to it that he is taken good care of when you are absent.
你不在的时候我一定会负责把他照顾好的。
6. Pip, who is seven years old when the story begins, is in a foggy cemetery when a desperate criminal appears and frightens him.
when意为“这时;突然”;(关系副词)
它总是对所描述的事件予以引人注目的强调,意为“这时;突然”;大致有以下三种情况:
A.when 前面的分句使用过去进行时。
如:
他正笑着的时候,门突然开了,他妻子走了进来。
___________________________________________________________
我正想着这件事时,突然听到有人叫我的名字。
___________________________________________________________
B .when 前面的分句使用was (were)about to,was (were)on the point of 等。
如:
我们刚要出发就开始下雨了。

C. when 之前的分句用过去完成时,其中sb had hardly / scarcely /barely … when 已成为固定词组。
如:
我们刚刚入睡,铃声就响了起来。

7. He has rigid ideas of what it means to be civil and to be a gentleman, and is embarrassed by Joe because he does not fit these.
what引导名词性从句的用法
1)表示“……的东西或事情”:
他们已经尽力帮助了她。

他已经不是10年前的那个样子。
__________________________________________________ 3)表示“……的数量或数目”:
我们现在的收入是10年前的两倍。
4)表示“……的时间”:
