Directions: Listen to the passage TWICE and fill in the blanks.(10 points)In my heart there lives the dream of a beautiful garden. It is a sacred garden. It is the form our Mother Earth wanted to take. She wanted to be filled with lush gardens, waterfalls, soft warm sunlight, misty 51 and cool fragrant 52 . She wanted to be soft, and gentle and romantic. She wanted to be loved and 53 and revered in her right place, as our Mother, the giver of all life. She needed and wanted balance and acceptance for her wonderful gifts. Gifts of life, love and reproduction. But almost before She had time to know how beautiful She was, something happened and our beautiful Mother Earth began to 54 .Some say She did wrong, and is being punished. Others say because She is 55 , She is less than divine and doesn't have the ability to remain 56 . Whatever the reason, our Mother is tired now. Very tired. All the pristine beauty that once was, is going away. Her 57 are dirty. Her land is bare. Her wildlife is dead and dying. Her air is filled with smoke and debris, and Her face is old and 58 .Does anyone care that once She was a beautiful maiden that opened up her dark, rich soil to receive the seed of the God Sun? He planted His Spirit into Her biological womb and from there we grew.... Yet in all this long time, there is no talk of our Mother. We have a Father and an Elder Brother. But Mother has lost Her place of reverence in our hearts and this is 59 in the way we treat Her, with our garbage and our continual 60 , so that to describe anything as earthly has become akin to saying it is evil and "of the flesh" has come to mean something much, much less than divine.51. 100%The vicious murder of James Byrd in Jasper last June was a reminder that hate crimes in Texas are not a thing of the past. Byrd, a 49-year-old black man, was 61 when he was picked up by three white men who allegedly beat Byrd, spray-painted his face, 62 him to the back of their pickup truck, and 63 him for more than two miles to his death. It was later discovered that two of the three 64 were members of a white supremacist prison gang -- prison officials say one wore a tattoo of a black man hanging from a tree.Prosecutors in the Byrd case are seeking the death penalty. By 65 to prove that the murder was committed during a second offense, that of kidnapping, they are 66 all three men with capital murder. But despite the 67 nature of the killing, none of them is being prosecuted under state or federal hate crimes laws, which aim to 68 penalties for those convicted. The federal statute does not come into play, because it only protects victims who are 69 in "protected" activities, such as exhibiting their right to free speech, or if they are in a federal facility or school. And the state law -- which can increase a penalty to that of the next highest offense -- is rarely needed for first degree felonies, such as murder, since those crimes already carry a maximum punishment of life in prison, and the law cannot be used to 70 the death penalty.61. 0 / 0VI. Appendix IKey to Exercises (Units 1-8)Unit 1Part I Pre-Reading TaskScript for the recording:The song you are about to hear is based on a true story. It tells the tale of the sinking of a ship called The Edmund Fitzgerald that was caught in a storm on Lake Superior back in November 1975, with the loss of all on board.Lake Superior is an enormous lake and the wind can at times make it dangerous to shipping, whipping up huge waves. November is a particularly dangerous month for such storms. This had long ago been noticed by a local native American tribe, the Chippewa, who used to speak of how death threatened from the lake when storm clouds gathered in November. According to legend, the big lake, which they called Gitche Gumee, was without mercy in that month, never giving up those it had marked for death. It is this legend that starts the song before it moves on to talk of The Edmund Fitzgerald. The Edmund Fitzgerald, like many other ships that sail the lake, was built to carry iron ore. Filled with ore these ships lie low in the water and can find themselves in difficulties in rough weather. So, with a full load on board we can imagine the anxiety that must have begun to creep into the hearts of the sailors on board The Edmund Fitzgerald as they felt the cold wind beginning to rise and heard the sound of it singing as it blew through the wires. For, despite the fact that the captain and crew were all experienced, "well-seasoned" as the song says, they all knew the dangers of November storms. Before long their worse fears started to come true and the storm had risen to a hurricane. The despair of the crew is captured in the words of the cook. First he comes on deck to tell the sailors it is too rough to cook, they will have to wait for their supper. The next we hear from him he is saying- $6 -Appendix Igoodbye to his shipmates. Water is pouring into the ship. The captain sends out a distress signal, but that is the last that is heard from the ship. It is swallowed up by the lake, leaving nothing behind but the mourning families of the twenty-nine sailors and the sound of the church bell ringing in their memory. Now let's listen to the song:The Wreck of the Edmund FitzgeraldGordon LightfootThe legend lives on from the Chippewa on downOr the big lake they call Gitche GumeeTke lake, it is said, rfever gives up her deadWhen the skies or November turn gloomyWitk a load of iron ore twenty-six thousand tons moreThan the Edmund Fitzgerald weighed emptyThat good ship and true was a hone to be chewedWhen the gales of November came earlyTke skip was tke pride of tke American side Coming back fromsome mill in Wisconsin As tke kig freigkters go, it was kiggertkan most Witk a crew and good captain well seasonedConcluding some terms witk a couple of steel firms Wken tkeyleft fully loaded for Cleveland And later tkat nigkt wken tkeskip's kell rang Could it ke tke nortk wind tkey'd been feelingTke wind in tke wires made a tattle-tale soundAnd a wave broke over tke railingAnd every man knew,as tke captain did tooTwas tke witck of Novemker come stealingTke dawn came late and the breakfast had to waitWken the Gales of November came slashingWhen afternoon came it was freezing rainIn the face of a hurricane west windAppendix 1- 6? -When suppertime came, the old cook came on deck sayingFellas1, it's too rough to reed ya2At seven PM a main hatchway caved in,he saidFellas, it's heen good to know yaThe captain wired in he had water coming inAnd the good ship and crew was in perilAnd later that night when his lights went out of sightCame the wreck of the Edmund FitzgeraldDoes any one know where the love of God goes When the waves turnthe minutes to hours The searchers all say they'd have madeWhitefish Bay If they'd put fifteen more miles hehind her They mighthave split up or they might have capsized They may have broke deep andtook water And all that remains is the faces and the names Of the wivesand the sons and the daughters JLake Huron rolls, Superior singsIn the rooms of her ice'water mansionOld Michigan steams like a young man's dreamsThe islands and hays are for sportsmenAnd farther helow Lake OntarioTakes in what Lake Erie can send herAnd the iron boats go as the mariners all knowWith the Gales of November rememberedIn a musty old hall in Detroit they prayed In the Maritime Sailors'Cathedral The church hell chimed til it rang twenty-nine timesFor each man on the Edmund Fitzgerald■■••!1 fella: (slang) fellow2 ya: (slang) you- 66 -Appendix 1Trie legend lives on irom the Chippewa on down Or thenig lake they call Gitche Gumee Superior, they said, nevergives up her dead When the gales or November comeearlyPart II Text Alexf Organization": ........................... ■■■■........................................... ■■ -Parts Paragraphs'' Main IdeasPart One Paras 1-2Introduction — Both Napoleon's and Hitler's militarycampaigns failed because of the severity of the Russianwinter.Part Two Paras 3-11Napoleon's military campaign against RussiaPart Three Paras 12-20Hitler's military campaign against the Soviet UnionPart Four Para 21Conclusion—The elements of nature must be reckonedwith in any military campaign.2.Sections Paragraphs Main IdeasSection One Paras 12-13Hitler's blitzkrieg against Russia and Stalin's scorched earthpolicySection Two Paras 14-18the battles fought at Leningrad, Moscow and Stalingrad Section Three Paras 19-20the Russian counter-offensive and the outcome of the war VocabularyI. 1. 1) alliance3) stroke5) minus7) declarations 2) heroic 4) limp 6) regions 8) siegeAppendix I- $99) raw10) retreat11) have taken their toll12) In the case of13) campaign14) at the cost of15) has been brought to a halt2. 1) is faced with2) get bogged down3) is pressing on / pressed on 4) drag on5) picking up6) falling apart7) cut back8) take over3. 1) The rapid advance in gene therapy may lead to the conquest of cancer in the near future.2)The border dispute between the two countries resulted in thousands of casualties.3)Sara has made up her mind that her leisure interests will/should never get in the way of hercareer.4)Obviously the reporter's question caught the foreign minister off guard.5)The introduction of the electronic calculator has rendered the slide rule out of date / obso-lete.4. 1) At that time, the enemy forces were much superior to ours, so we had to give up theoccupation of big cities and retreat to the rural and mountainous regions to build up ourbases.2)Unity is crucial to the efficient operation of an organization. TranslationThe offensive had already lasted three days, but we had not gained much ground. Our troops engaging the enemy at the front were faced with strong/fierce/stiff resistance. The divi-sion commander instructed our battalion to get around to the rear of the enemy and launch a surprise attack. To do so, however, we had to cross a marshland and many of us were afraid we might get bogged down in the mud. Our battalion commander decided to take a gamble. We started under cover of darkness and pressed on in spite of great difficulties. By a stroke of luck, the temperature at night suddenly dropped to minus 20 degrees Celsius and the marsh froze over. Thanks to the cold weather, we arrived at our destination before dawn and began attacking the enemy from the rear. This turned the tide of the battle. The enemy, caught off guard, soon surrendered.Part III TextBComprehension Check 1. d3. b.-2. d 4. a- 92 -Appendix ITranslation(#JE Appendix III)Language Practice1. boast2.obstacles3. was concerned4.call ...off■5. paid off6.was pinned down7. are contesting8.prior to9. holdout10.objective11. responsible for12.in case13. favorable14.due to15. on the eve of16.cancel17. complications18.stiff19. withstand20.absentPart IV Theme-Related Language Learning TasksWriting StrategyTick which of the following is more convincing:_____________ It was reported that General Eisenhower, though indecisive sometimes, had no hesitation in ordering the assault on Normandy.______ √ ____ Eisenhower's chief of staff, Brigadier General Water Bedell Smith, later wrote: "... Model PaperCan Man Triumph over Nature? When people talk of man triumphing over nature, many things come to mind. One thinks of successes in medicine in the fight against disease, such as the invention of antibiotics and the promise held out by advances in biogenetic engineering. On a broader scale, one thinks of man's success in harnessing new forms of energy from steam power through oil to nuclear power.Yet, nature has often hit back in unexpected ways to these attempts to tame it. New forms ofAppendix I- 98 -disease that are resistant to antibiotics are constantly developing. Burning fossil fuels has led to fears of global warming; while nuclear power has produced dangerous waste that will remain a hazard for generations to come. However, perhaps to talk of man triumphing over nature is the wrong way to look at the matter. We need to find ways to work with nature rather than forever fighting against it.(154 words)Unit 2Part I Pre-Reading TaskScript for the recording:What will the world be like in five hundred years' time? A thousand years' time? Or more? Some people are optimistic, looking forward to a better world. Others are pessimistic, and fear that things can only get worse. The writer of the song you are about to listen to takes the pessimistic view. Looking further and further into the future things seem to him to get worse and worse. By 3535, he foresees all our thoughts and feelings will be shaped by drugs. Looking further still into the future he foretells that our bodies will waste away as machines do everything for us. Family life as we know it will fade away as children are bred artificially, chosen, in the words of the song, "from the bottom of a long black tube." Given that man seems to pay so little attention to taking care of the planet and avoiding using up all its resources, he ends by wondering whether man will still be around in the future. It's enough, as he says, to make even God shake his head. Here is the song:In the Year 2525Zager & EvansIn the year 2525If man is still aliveIf woman can surviveThey may find- 9^ -Appendix IIn the year 3535Ain't gonna need* to tell the truth, tell no lies Everythingyou think, do, or say Is in the pill you took todayIn the year 4545Ain't gonna need your teeth, won't need your eyesYou won't rind a thing to doNobody's gonna look at youIn the year 5555Your arms are hanging limp at your sidesYour legs not nothing to doSome machine is doing that for youIn the year 6565Ain't gonna need no husband, won't need no wife-:You'll pick your son, pick your daughter .tooFrom the bottom of a long black tube.In the year, 7510. Expanded use of computer technology, development of stronger and lighter materials, and research in/intopollution control will produce better, and "smarter" automobiles. In the 1980s the notion that a car would "talk" to its driver was science fiction; by the 1990s it had become a reality, more or less. Presently automobile companies such as GM and Nissan are poised to launch new advertising campaigns for their smart cars. Sounds are produced by objects that vibrate in the air at a rate that the ear can detect. This rate is called frequency and is measured in hertz, or vibrations per second. Reflective devices are more visible at night and are used in some locations to mark lanes and other significant places on the road. What's more, automated vehicle-control technologies are presently under development to improve highway safety. These devices are mounted in the vehicle and can alert a driver to an impending hazard or, in an emergency, override the actions of the driver. Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write an essay on the use of translation apps. You can start your essay with the sentence "The use of translation apps is becomging increasingly popular. " You should write at least 120 words but no more than 180 words. 1:The use of translation apps is becoming increasingly popular. Why? Admittedly, in the contemporay society, an increasing number of people, with the help of translation apps, find it convenient to read foreign literature or essays. On the one hand, these apps can bring users greater efficiency and help them save more time or energy, particularly for those who have no knowledge of a foreign language. For instance, a host of people may have a variety of difficulties or troubles in learning English, but with the assistance of these apps, it will not be difficult for them to read and understand English materials. On the other hand, it is these apps that cuase some learners to lose motivation for studying. With Apps in hand, they are not willing to do their utmost to memorize new words, pratice speaking or writing skills every day. Fianlly, they will fail to get a good command of any foreign language.I, as a college student, deem that it is of great necessity for youngsters to use translations apps in a rational way. We should bear in mind that any translation app is merely a tool. Provided that one intends to master a foreign language, it is advisabel to practice each day instead of relying on translation apps.

At first, yellow 51 are everywhere, and flags, and signs in peoples' windows that say "We Support Our Troops." But the new American 52 span is brief, in the best of times: we lose interest quickly. The news from 53 is never good news--good news doesn't sell many newspapers. And so, since we don't like to hear bad news about something from which there seems no ready 54 , we begin to ignore the war altogether. And with it, the young people we have sent to fight it.Meanwhile, people's tours are 55 and people come home wounded. Some come home dead. Other people go over to 56 them. Our Web guy gets the names of people who have died off the Internet once a week, my friend Jim says, and we pray for them every Sunday. This is 57 . It is also unusual. Probably none of the soldiers for whom we are praying are members of our organization. But they are all children of God.There is another prayer of which we are 58 in need, a prayer that many of us, perhaps, have yet to begin. In any war, we need to pray for our 59 . We need to pray for those who hate us. One day, we will live together as friends without any 60 . We need to begin seeing the enemy as a human being now, before that day comes, because it will never come if we cannot.51. 50%Like a bolt of lightning out of a darkening sky, war burst upon the American 61 in the spring of 1861, climaxing decades of bitter 62 and pitting two vast sections of a young and vigorous nation against each other. Northerners called it the War of the 63 , Southerners named the War Between the States. We know it simply as the Civil War.In the East, beginning in the spring of 1861, the cry from Union 64 was "On to Richmond!" For the next four years a succession of Northern commanders struggled 65 to do just that get to Richmond. One 66 effort in 1862 used the naval might of the Union to reach the vicinity of the Confederate capital by water routes. The other attempts 67 slogged across a narrow central Virginia corridor and sought to disperse tenacious Southern defenders who seemed always to be 68 with the path. Confederate successes offered occasional opportunities to take the war north into Maryland and Pennsylvania and to 69 Washington. Both sides came to see the enemy army as the proper goal, and both recognized the obligation of the enemy army to defend its respective capital city against military threats. The 70 was four years of war fought to the death mostly in a relatively small strip of Virginia countryside between Washington and Richmond.61. 0%VI. It is the grizzly bear (灰熊). Grizzlies (灰熊) can sprint thirty-five plus miles an hour, smell fish at nine or more miles, and drag a thousand-pound animal up steep mountains. The grizzly bear is one of a very few remaining on earth that can kill a human in physical combat. It can remove a human head with a single hit, or cause serious harm to a person in rapid order. Within the last wilderness areas where they live, they are the undisputed king of all beasts. I know this all very well. My name is Timothy Treadwell, and I live with the wild grizzly."Timothy Treadwell (April 29, 1957-October 5, 2003), born Timothy Dexter, gave a warning here that we should all pay attention to. Animals, particularly the bears he knew well, can be deadly. As it turns out, Treadwell should've taken his own advice and respected the danger these animals present. He should've kept his distance from them. If he had, he might be with us today.Who was Timothy Treadwell?Treadwell was an environmentalist and bear enthusiast who lived among the Coastal brown bears of Katmai National Park in Alaska for approximately 13 seasons. At the end of his thirteenth season in the park in 2003, he and his girlfriend Amie Huguenard (age 37) were killed and partially eaten by a brown bear. The attack was notable because of the unusual lifestyle of the victims, and the survival of an audio recording of the attack. Treadwell's life, work, and death were the subject of the 2005 documentary film by Werner Herzog titled Grizzly Man.Life StoryBorn in Long Island, New York, much of what is known of Timothy Treadwell's life is documented by Treadwell himself. Treadwell characterized himself as an actor, recovering alcoholic, former drug user, and hero of the wild. According to his personal accounts, he became involved with drugs after failing to gain the role won by Woody Harrelson in the TVcomedy Cheers. Treadwell claimed to his parents that he was second-choice for the role, but this has not been independently verified.Interest in bearsAfter several visits to Alaska in the early 1990's, Treadwell became interested in bears and, in the last 5 years of his life, documented many of his experiences and interactions with bears via home video. Treadwell attributed his recovery from drug use to his relationship with bears.By 2001, Treadwell became notable enough to receive extensive media attention both on television and in environmental circles. Through his videos, he became known for attempting to create personal relationships with the bears he worked with.As an activist, he actively communicated with the public, including traveling throughout the United States to educate school children about bears, and appearing on the Discovery Channel, Late Show with David Letterman, and Dateline NBC to discuss his experiences. He was also a co-author, with Jewel Palovak, of the book Among Grizzlies: Living with Wild Bears in Alaska, where he described his adventures in Alaska.Treadwell, along with his friends Jewel Palovak, and former American Gladiator Jonathan Byrne founded Grizzly People, a political organization devoted to protecting bears and preserving their wilderness home. Despite the organization's name, Treadwell did not associate with grizzly bears, a term properly applied only to brown bears that live farther inland.DeathIn October 2003, Treadwell and his girlfriend, Amie Huguenard, visited Katmai National Park in Alaska. Treadwell, who never carried any means of defense against bear attacks, chose to set his campsite near a stream where bears commonly feed in the fall. Treadwell was in the park later in the year than usual, at a time when bears fight to gain as much fat as possible before winter, and limited food supplies cause them to be more aggressive than in other months. It has been noted that food was scarce that fall, and the bears were therefore more aggressive than usual. On October 6, 2003, Treadwell and Huguenard's bodies were discovered by the Kodiak air taxi pilot who arrived at their campsite to pick them up from their trip. A large elderly male bear (tagged Bear 141) protecting the campsite was killed by park police while they attempted to get the bodies. A second adolescent bear was killed a short time later after it charged the park police. It was later shown that the first animal had consumed parts of the couples' remains. This bear is not believed to be one of the bears Treadwell usually encountered, though this point is disputed.A video camera, with the lens cap in place, was recovered at the site. The video camera had been turned on at some point during the fatal attack, presumably by Huguenard, but the camera recorded only six minutes of audio before running out of tape. Treadwell's head, partial backbone, and left arm and hand still wearing his wrist watch were recovered at the scene. Huguenard's partial body was found nearby somewhat buried in dirt. Methods and CriticismTreadwell's methods were generally thought unsound by bear experts and public alike. He named many of the bears he encountered and often moved close enough to them that he could touch them and interact with them on a personal level. Many wildlife experts objected to his methods, believing that his attitude toward the bears was too brave, that he ignored well-known dangers of working with bears, and that he thought of them too much as people. Experts also believe that he endangered the animals by making them too comfortable with humans, thus increasing the likelihood of dangerous encounters in the future. His death by bear attack is seen by some as a natural conclusion of his methods of interacting with bears. His critics also note that while Treadwell believed that he was protecting bears, control experts have stated that incidents of illegal hunting in the area were low and did not affect the population level. However, according to the "Grizzly People" organization he founded, five bears were killed in the year after his death, while none had been killed while he was present in Katmai. This last point is disputed.Grizzly Man, the FilmIn 2005, director Werner Herzog released Grizzly Man, a documentary about Treadwell's work with wildlife in Alaska, which aired on the Discovery Channel and is frequently rerun. It includes some of the film that Treadwell took, and also interviews with people who knew him, and his appearance on David Letterman. Grizzly Man is generally considered to have a critical take on Treadwell, his methods and his character; many people say that Grizzly Man made Treadwell look mentally unbalanced. However, Herzog does praise Treadwell's films and pictures.1.There are not many animals that can, like the grizzly, ________________.A. inspire respect and fearB. live in wilderness areasC. kill a human in physical combatD. sprint thirty-five plus miles an hour2.Why was the attack on Treadwell and Huguenard notable? ________________A.
