ago.Ofcourse,thesechangeshavealsobroughtdisruptio insettledpatteroflifeandwork,andhaveimposedenormo usstraionyourenvironment.OnceeveryurbanChinesewas guaranteedemploymentinastateenterprise.Nowyoumust competeinajobmarket.OnceaChineseworkerhadonlytome etthedemandsofacentralplaerinBeijing.Nowtheglobal economymeaallmustmatchthequalityandcreativityofth erestoftheworld.Forthosewholacktherighttrainingan dskillsandsuort,thisnewworldcanbedaunting.Intheshort-term,good,hardworkingpeople--some,atleastwill findthemselvesunemployed.And,asallofyoucansee,the rehavebeenenormousenvironmentalandeconomicandheal ustoseektruthfromfacts.Atthedawnofthenewcentury,t hefactsareclear.Thedistancebetweenourtwonatio,ind eed,betweenanynatio,isshrinking.WhereonceanAmeric ancliershiptookmonthstocrofromChinatotheUnitedSta tes.Today,technologyhasmadeusallvirtualneighbors. Fromlaptotolasers,frommicrochitomegabytes,aninfor mationrevolutionislightingthelandscapeofhumanknow ledge,bringingusallclosertogether.Ideas,informati on,andmoneycrotheplanetatthestrokeofacomputerkey, bringingwiththemextraordinaryoortunitiestocreatew ealth,topreventandconquerdisease,tofostergreateru nderstandingamongpeoplesofdifferenthistoriesanddi fferentcultures.Butwealsoknowthatthisgreateropeea ndfasterchangemeanthatproblemswhichstartbeyondone natioborderscanquicklymoveiidethem--thereadofweap oofmadestruction,thethreatsoforganizedcrimeanddru gtrafficking,ofenvironmentaldegradation,andsevere economicdislocation.Nonationcanisolateitselffromt heseproblems,andnonationcansolvethemalone.We,eeci allytheyoungergeneratioofChinaandtheUnitedStates, mustmakecommoncauseofourcommonchallenges,sothatwecan,together,shapeanewcenturyofbrilliantpoibiliti es.Inthe21stcentury--yourcentury--ChinaandtheUnit edStateswillfacethechallengeofsecurityinAsia.Onth eKoreanPeniula,whereoncewewereadversaries,todaywe areworkingtogetherforapermanentpeaceandafuturefre erofnuclearweapo.OntheIndiansubcontinent,justasmo stoftherestoftheworldismovingawayfromnucleardange r,IndiaandPakistanriskarkinganewarmsrace.Wearenow pursuingacommonstrategytomoveIndiaandPakistanaway fromfurthertestingandtowardadialoguetoresolvethei rdifferences.Inthe21stcentury,yourgenerationmustf acethechallengeofstoingthereadofdeadliernuclear,c hemical,andbiologicalweapo.Inthewronghandsorthewr ongplaces,theseweapocanthreatenthepeaceofnatiolar geandsmall.Increasingly,ChinaandtheUnitedStatesag reeontheimportanceofstoingproliferation.Thatiswhy wearebegiingtoactinconcerttocontroltheworldsmostd angerousweapo.Inthe21stcentury,yourgenerationwill havetoreversetheinternationaltideofcrimeanddrugs. storationofstabilityandgrowthintheAsiaPacificregi on.Chinahassteadfastlyshouldereditsreoibilitiesto theregionandtheworldinthislatestfinancialcrisis--helpingtopreventanothercycleofdangerousdevaluatio .Wemustcontinuetoworktogethertocounterthisthreatt otheglobalfinancialsystemandtothegrowthandproerit ywhichshouldbeembracingallofthisregion.Inthe21stc entury,yourgenerationwillhavearemarkableoortunity tobringtogetherthetalentsofourscientists,doctors, engineersintoasharedquestforprogre.Alreadythebrea kthroughswehaveachievedinourareasofjointcooperati on--inchallengesfromdealingwithinabifidatodealing withextremeweatherconditioandearthquakes--haveprovedwhatwecandotogethertochangethelivesofmillioofp eopleinChinaandtheUnitedStatesandaroundtheworld.E xpandingourcooperationinscienceandtechnologycanbe oneofourgreatestgiftstothefuture.Ineachofthesevit alareasthatIhavementioned,wecanclearlyaccomplishs omuchmorebywalkingtogetherratherthanstandingapart .Thatiswhyweshouldworktoseethattheproductiverelat edusacroourcontinentandontotheworldstage.Theseare theidealsthatAmericacherishtoday.AsIsaidinmypreco nferencewithPresidentJiang,wehaveanongoingquestou rselvestoliveuptothoseideals.Thepeoplewhoframedou rCotitutionunderstoodthatwewouldneverachieveperfe ction.TheysaidthatthemiionofAmericawouldalwaysbe" toformamoreperfectunion"--inotherwords,thatwewoul dneverbeperfect,butwehadtokeeptryingtodobetter.Th InChina,youhavemadeextraordinarystridesinnurturin gthatliberty,andreadingfreedomfromwant,tobeasourc eofstrengthtoyourpeople.Incomesareup,povertyisdow peopledohavemorechoicesofjo,andtheabilitytotravel --theabilitytomakeabetterlife.Buttruefreedominclu desmorethaneconomicfreedom.InAmerica,webelieveiti saconceptwhichisindivisible.Overthepastfourdays,I haveseenfreedominmanymanifestatioinChina.Ihavesee nthefreshshootsofdemocracygrowinginthevillagesofy ourheartland.Ihavevisitedavillagethatchoseitsownl eadersinfreeelectio.Ihavealsoseenthecellphones,thevideoplayers,thefaxmachinescarryingideas,informa tionandimagesfromallovertheworld.I'veheardpeoplee aktheirmindsandIhavejoinedpeopleinprayerinthefait hofmyownchoosing.InallthesewaysIfeltasteadybreeze offreedom.Thequestionis,wheredowegofromhere?Howdo weworktogethertobeontherightsideofhistorytogether ?Morethan50yearsago,HuShi,oneofyourgreatpolitical thinkersandateacheratthisuniversity,saidtheseword s:"Nowsomepeoplesaytomeyoumustsacrificeyourindivi dualfreedomsothatthenationmaybefree.ButIreply,the struggleforindividualfreedomisthestruggleforthena tion'sfreedom.Thestruggleforyourowncharacteristhe struggleforthenation'scharacter."WeAmericabelieve HuShiwasright.Webelieveandourexperiencedemotrates thatfreedomstrengthestabilityandhelnatiotochange. 透过记者的眼睛，我们现场目击了朔州假酒荼毒生灵的惨祸;透过记者的眼睛，我们奋力传递了昆明“铲除恶霸”的呼喊;透过记者的眼睛，我们仔细观察了中国电信反垄断的艰难进程;透过记者的眼睛，我们忠实记录了亿万军民战胜世纪洪水的巨大勇气和抗争精神……有人说，人在履行职责中得到幸福;也有人说，履行一项职责时总会感到是在还债，因为它决不会令我们自己非常满意。

穿过一个又一个伐木点，终于找到了生病住院的主人公，这位老伐木工发自内心的忏悔，为“寻找长江的伤口”留下了最真实的言说和最切肤的痛。
我们的许多报道，就是不断发现和不断寻找的结果。
记者的眼睛不仅仅为发现事实寻找真相而睁开，记者的眼睛也常常被真情打动，而轻轻闭上。

然而，还是有不少人永远记住了那近300个生命在瞬间凋零的孩子，记住了那132个被大火永远改变了命运的幸存者。
为此，本报继上期推出2个版的摄影报道后，在寻访众多当事人的基础上，再次推出相关报道。
以缅怀那些死难者，安慰那些幸存者。
回望及寻找真相，是为了避免悲剧的再次发生。
亦是为了更好地前行。
