I was a workaholic with crippling decision-making anxiety. I could turn the simple choice of whether to take a flight at 2:45 p.m. or 4:30 p.m. into a week-long deliberation that changed into a meditation (沉思) on my shortcomings as a human being. I constantly doubted my own intelligence and often put in longer hours than necessary to compensate for my low self-esteem. In sum, my friends were probably right. But since I was busy with a full-time job and many freelance assignments, caring about myself usually took a backseat to work. So when I heard about text therapy, which allows you to message a counselor via phone while you answer an e-mail and eat lunch at your desk, I signed up. Things started out well. I was paired with a woman I called Barbara, based on Talkspace's "matching process". We covered the basics. In the early days, text therapy was a great spot treatment for my decision-making anxiety. One afternoon, Barbara talked with me through the paralyzing choice of whether or not to attend an awards show in Toronto. Over the course of a few weeks I had exhausted my boyfriend, friends and family with my inability to say yes or no. a Just without thinking about right or wrong…what do you want?" Barbara asked. The question made me realize that I rarely trusted my own intuition because, well, I didn't really like myself. After a few times of text therapy, Barbara responded with a classic friendly emoji. Day by day, in our recent session, I began to thank Barbara and she wished me well. Her final text was a smiley face.1. What can you infer about the author from Paragraph 1?A. She became ill because of working too hard.B. She was not decisive.C. She lacks the ability to make new friends.D. She is suffering from work pressure.2. How did the author perform the treatment?A. Turn to a friend.B. Send messages through phone.C. Make friends via the Internet.D. Write e-mails to some friends.3. What does the underlined word in Paragraph 3 mean?A. Tough.B. Disabled.C. Thrilling.D. Hurried.4. What's the result of text therapy for the author?A. Effective.B. Not mentioned.C. Of little use.D. Beyond expectations.3. Snow algae (藻) is already a part of summer on the Antarctic Peninsula. A warming planet may meana lot more of it. The algal blooms (藻花) that blanket parts of Antarctica's snow cover in the summer are likely to expand as the planet warms, researchers say in a new study.Green snow algae is found in warmer areas along the coastline where summer temperatures are above freezing, but still cold enough there to snow, say scientists in a study published this Wednesday in the journal Nature. It's also more abundant in areas in close proximity to nesting sites and gathering places for animals like penguins and seals, whose feces (粪便) fuel the algae's growth.Green algae isn't new for Antarctica-it's known to have been there to some degree for decades, New Scientist notes. But what researchers found suggests that climate change could have a major impact on algae in Antarctica, which, in turn, could have its own impact on a warming planet. The scientists don't predict that green algae will spread on all parts of the peninsula. In fact, some small low-lying islands are likely to lose algae, because those islands may lose their summer snow cover altogether—and the snow algae can't grow without snow. But they predict the amount of green algae is likely to grow on larger pieces of land, where it can spread upward to higher ground that still has snow.So what does more algae mean, besides turning the landscape green? It's not totally clear. The green algae works as a carbon sink—the current amount of algae in Antarctica pulls about 500 tons of carbon from the atmosphere each year. On the other hand, algae also makes the surface of the snow darker, which leads to less sunlight being reflected from the snow's surface, Scientific American notes. That means that more of the sun's heat gets absorbed, speeding up warming. It's high time that we should protect our planet.1. What causes the expansion of algal blooms in Antarctica?A. The melting of snow.B. The rising air temperature.C. The researchers' activities.D. The covering of snow.2. What do we know about green snow algae?A. It has covered all parts of Antarctica.B. It will spread to islands without snow.C. It can grow in warm or fertilized places.D. It has some effects on penguins and seals.3. What is the last paragraph mainly about?A. A carbon sink in Antarctica.B. The influence of green algae.C. Changes of Antarctica's snow.D. Sunlight reflected from the snow's surface.4. What is the author's purpose in writing the text?A. To share a new discovery about green algae.B. To explain the origins of green snow algae.C. To call on people to protect the environment.D. To show his concern about green snow algae.4. The secrets of dreaming are always interesting psychologists. It is generally acknowledged in the field that dreams people have during this time between childhood and full adulthood, that's around 30, are the strongest and most influential. Yet not enough is known about the repeated patterns of dreaming. Researchers are still trying to answer a basic question: How does dreaming relate to the life experiences and developmental challenges?G. William Domhoff and Adam Schneider, at the University of California, help to answer this question by examining the lengthy dream series of two individuals, "Izzy" and "Jasmine". Izzy provided a collection of 4,329 dream reports from between the ages of 12 and 25, while Jasmine provided 664 dreams recorded between the ages of 14 and 25.Large collections of dreams like these pose challenges to researchers. Until recently, the means of studying dream series was to employ a team of recorders who take the time to code each dream for a predetermined number of content categories, and then compare their results. Nowadays, digital technologies enable the analysis of language usage in dreams with high speed, precision, and objectivity. This marks a revolutionary advance in the science of dreaming. However, it can only lead so far.To gain more specific and detailed insights, Domhoff and Schneider tailored word strings for each dreamer, mixing elements of traditional research with digital tools for analyzing large data sets. For Izzy these word strings included "family and relatives", "celebrities" and "fantasy", while the word strings they created for Jasmine included "familiar places", "electrical equipment" and "music". The researchers used these word strings to identify connections between their dreams and real lives. Surprisingly, the results of the analysis revealed a great deal of consistency and continuity in both sets of dreams. Izzy pays much attention to pop culture, and has affection for famous actors. Jasmine is an accomplished musician and performer."The frequencies of dream elements reveal the intensity of the dreamer's personal concern with that element in waking thought," Domhoff and Schneider conclude. For anyone who still claims dreaming is merely random nonsense from the brain and mental world, these findings are hard to explain away.1. What do psychologists agree with about dreams?A. Dreams are influenced by life experiences.B. Dreaming is never nonsense from the brain.C. Dreams in one's teens and twenties are most intense.D. The patterns of dreaming are usually repeated.2. What does "it" underlined in paragraph 3 refer to?A. The collection of dreams.B. Research into dreaming.C. The digital method.D. The challenge for psychologists.3. How do the researchers conduct their study?A. By analyzing large data sets.B. By developing individualized word strings.C. By identifying the patterns of dreaming.D. By making comparison with traditional research.4. Which can be the best title for the text?A. New tech, new findingB. Dreams: reflections of waking realityC. Lives, languages, dreamsD. 高中英语黄金阅读(高三版)Golden Reading for Senior Middle School Students一、人物类(1)In October 1961 at Crowley Field in Cincinnati Ohio an old deaf gentleman named William E. Hoy stood up to throw the first ball of the World Series. Most people at Crowley Field on that day probably did not remember Hoy because he had retired(退休) from professional baseball 58 years earlier in 1903. However he had been an outstanding player and the deaf people still talk about him and his years in baseball.William E. Hoy was born in Houckstown Ohio on May 23, 1862. He became deaf when he was two years old. He attended the Columbus Ohio School for the deaf. After graduation he started playing baseball while working as a shoemaker.Hoy began playing professional baseball in 1886 for Oshkosh(Wisconsin) of the Northwestern League. In 1888 he started as an outfielder(外场手) with the old Washington Senators. His small figure and speed made him an outstanding base runner. He was very good at stealing bases during his career. In the 1888 major league season he stole 82 bases. He was also the Senators‟ leading hitter in 1888. Hoy was clever and he threw right-handed and batted left-handed. On June 19,1889 he threw out three batters(击球手) at the plate from his outfield position. The arm signals used by judges today to show balls and strikes began because of Hoy. The judge lifted his right arm to show that the pitch was a strike and his left arm to signal that it was a ball. For many years people talked about Hoy‟s l ast ball game in 1903. He was playing for Los Angeles of the Pacific Coast Winter League. It was a memorable game because Hoy hit a wonderful ball which won the game. (2)TOKYO, Japan — An earthquake measuring 8.0 hit the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido early Friday. The quake was the strongest anywhere in the world this year. Several million people live on the island. Japan's national broadcasting agency, NHK, reported 236 people had been hurt, but no deaths had been reported. Tsunami waves measuring about 3 feet (1 meter) began hitting the eastern coast of Japan's northernmost island, and officials warned all residents in the region to seek higher ground. A fire broke out at oil refinery on the island after the earthquake, and television stations reported a train derailment and a landslide near a highway tunnel. The U.S. Geological Survey measured the quake at 8.0 but authorities in Japan initially gave it a magnitude of 7.8. The USGS said the temblor was located 33 kilometers (20 miles) under the Earth's crust, about 796 miles north / northwest of Tokyo, and began at 4:50 a.m. local time (1950 GMT). "Based on all available data, a tsunami may have been generated by this earthquake that could be destructive on coastal areas even far from the epicenter," said the announcement from the National Tsunami Hazard Mitigation Program. Only six days ago a 5.5-magnitude quake shook Japan. The September 20 earthquake was centered nearly 870 kilometers (540 miles) south-southeast of Tokyo, near Japan's Bonin Islands, a remote volcanic island group in the Pacific Ocean.
