Any foreigner who has tried to learn Chinese can tell how hard it is to master the tones required
to speak and understand. And anyone who has tried to learn to play the violin or other
instruments can report similar challenges.
Now researchers have found that people with musical training have an easier time learning
Chinese.Writing in the online edition of Nature Neuroscience, researchers from Northwestern
University say that both skills draw on the same parts of the brain that help people discover
changes in pitch(音调).
One of the study's authors, Nina Kraus, said the findings suggested that studying music “actually
tunes our sensory system”.This means that schools that want children to do well in languages
should hesitate before cutting music programs, Dr.Kraus said. She said music training might also
help children with language problems.
Mandarin speakers have been shown to have a more complex encoding(编码)of pitch patterns in
their brains than English speakers do.This is because in Mandarin and other Asian languages,
pitch plays a central role.A single-syllable word can have several meanings depending on how it
is intoned.
For this study, the researchers looked at 20 non-Chinese speaking volunteers, half with no
musical background and half who have studied an instrument for at least six years.
As they were shown a movie, the volunteers also heard an audio tape of the Mandarin word “mi”
in three of its meanings: squint, bewilder and rice. The researchers recorded activities in their
brain stems to see how well they were processing the sounds. Those with a music background
showed much more brain activities in response to the Chinese sounds.
The lead author of the study, Patrick C.M.Wong, said it might work both ways.It appears that
native speakers of tonal languages may do better at learning instruments.
1.Why does Chinese learning have something to do with music training?
A.Because there is the same difficulty in learning Chinese and music.
B.Because skills to learn the two make use of the same parts of the brain.
C.Because music training might help people with language study.
D.Because people who do well in Chinese study do well in music.
2.The underlined word “intoned” in the fourth paragraph can be replaced by the word
“________”.
A.created B.spelled
C.seemed D.pronounced
3.What would be the best title for this passage?
A.Mandarin Speakers Are Smarter Than English Speakers
B.Skilled Ear for Music May Help Language Study
C.Pitch Plays a Central Role in Chinese Learning
D.Schools Need to Develop Music Programs
【答案】
1.B
2.D
3.B
【分析】
这是一篇说明文。研究人员发现,受过音乐训练的人学习语言更容易。
1.
细节理解题。根据第二段第二句中“…researchers from Northwestern University say that both
skills draw on the same parts of the brain that help people discover changes in pitch”(西北大学的研究人员说,这两种技能都利用了大脑中帮助人们发现音调变化的相同部分)可知,学习这两种技能利用了大脑的相同部分,因此,汉语学习和音乐训练有关系。故选B项。
2.
词句猜测题。根据第四段中“This is because in Mandarin and other Asian languages, pitch
plays a central role. A single-syllable word can have several meanings depending on how it is
intoned.
Now researchers have found that people with musical
training have an easier time learning Chinese.(现在研究人员发现,受过音乐训练的人更容易学习汉语。)”可知,研究表明,经过音乐训练的人,更容易学汉语。音乐训练和汉语学习均用到了大脑相同的部位。该部位可以帮助人们更好地发现语调的变化,有助于人们学习语言。所以短文的最佳标题是“熟练的音乐听觉有助于语言学习”。 故选B项。

Recently, a woman who lives in a small apartment in San Francisco asked me a question. She
wanted to know how to prepare for a big earthquake. In fact, it’s quite necessary for people in
San Francisco to do that. Since she lives in an apartment, she cannot store water in a backyard or
place a rain collection system. Here is my answer to her.
Firstly, you should store water and food. Storing water is actually very easy. A gallon per day is
enough for you to drink. You can buy one of those 5-gallon spring water containers and put it in
the kitchen. Check the expiration date (截止日期), and get some new water when needed. Food
isn’t that hard, either. Get a few cans of soup, some canned fruit, and canned chickpeas or beans.
Make sure they all can be eaten without heating. This will cost less than DS|20 and take up very
little space in your kitchen. Throw a cheap canopener in there while you’re at it, tape (用胶带粘贴) it to the can, and forget about that one, too.
Secondly, first aid is going to let you stay out of limited medical facilities (装备), allowing you to

Language as a System of Symbols(符号)
Of all systems of symbols, language is the most highly developed. It has been pointed out that
human beings, by agreement, can make anything stand for anything. Human beings have agreed,
in the course of centuries of mutual dependency, to let the various noises that they can produce
with their lungs, throats, tongues, teeth, and lips systematically stand for certain happenings in
their nervous systems. We call that system of agreements language.
There is no necessary connection between the symbol and that which it stands for. Just as social
positions can be symbolized by feathers worn on the head, by gold on the watch chain, or by a
thousand other things according to the culture we live in, so the fact of being hungry can be
symbolized by a thousand different noises according to the culture we live in.

You may not know a lot of people when you start high school. Even if you know some freshmen
(新生) , you still feel nervous that you don't know any upperclassmen or teachers. How are you
going to make friends among this sea of unknown faces?
Most high schools hold a freshman orientation before school actually starts, which is helpful not
only because you can know your way around the building and get to meet some of your teachers,
but also because you get to meet fellow freshmen. That way, when you show up on your first day
of school, you may already recognise a few familiar faces. When you talk to your new classmates,
you'll probably find that a lot of them are feeling just like you are. They're all new to the school
and don't know what to expect. Talking about a common concern with them can help you

When I was five years old, my parents would have to pull me home from yet another
painful English vacation. I still didn't want to leave. I want to be away from home. I
wanted to go somewhere new and exciting. This became the theme of the next twenty
years. I'd spend the whole year counting down to my next holiday, and then as soon as I left
I'd begin to dread having to return home. Year after year.
Ten years ago, I decided to build a life that I didn't want to escape from. I knew I
wanted to travel in the long term, but I didn't have a lot of money or savings, and there is
no one paying for my adventures. For five years, I did three jobs while studying full-time at
university. I didn't eat out and I didn't buy anything I didn't need. I even moved in with my
parents. I was able to save ﹩16,000 over those five years, which was enough to keep me

Betty Azar is a world famous expert on teaching English grammar. Here are some of her opinions.
Why do students need to learn grammar?
When teachers are deciding which grammar points to teach, they should first ask two questions.
First, will understanding the point help students be understood—will it help them understand
better?Next, will learning the grammar point help students be acceptable as English speakers?
People usually think that grammar is all about memorizing rules. In fact, grammar is not just
learning rules. It is a way to help students along the way to communication.
Teachers should know that students do not all learn in the same way. Each may have a different
learning style when it comes to learning grammar. Some may see a pattern and understand the
rule. Others need explanations and more practice. “But to teach grammar as a subject matter and
