第一节 (共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
阅读下面短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
A I had offered to watch my 3-year-old daughter, Ramanda, so that my wife could go out
with a friend. I was getting some work done while Ramanda appeared to be having a good time
in the other room. No problem, I figured. But then it got a little too quiet and I yelled out,
“What are you doing, Ramanda?” No response. I repeated my question and heard her say,
“Oh,…nothing.” Nothing? What does “nothing” mean?
I got up from my desk and ran out into the living room, and then I saw her take off down
the hall. I chased her up the stairs and watched her as her little behind made a hard left into the
bedroom. I was gaining on her! She took off for the bathroom. Bad move. I had her cornered. I
told her to turn around. She refused. I pulled out my big, mean authoritative(命令式的)Daddy
voice.” Young lady, I said turn around!”
Slowly, she turned toward me. In her hand was what was left of my wife’s new lipstick.
And every square inch of her face was covered with bright red(except her lips of course)!
As she looked up at me with fearful eyes, lips trembling, I heard every voice that had
been shouted to me as a child. “How could you…You should know better than that…How
many times have you been told … What a bad thing to do…” It was just a matter of my picking
out which old message I was going to use on her so that she would know what a bad girl she
had been. But before I could let loose, I looked down at the sweatshirt my wife had put on her
only an hour before. In big letters it said, “I’M A PERFECT LITTLE ANGEL!” I looked back up
into her tearful eyes and,
instead of seeing a bad girl who didn’t listen, I saw a child of God… a
perfect little angel full of worth, value and a wonderful spontaneity(自发行为)that I had come
dangerously close to shaming out of her.

Paris
First on the list is Paris, France. For some people, this shouldn’t be a surprise. For others, they might consider Paris
overrated as it has a reputation for being dirty. Any major city in the world might be thought to be dirty by anyone
not living in a city. It comes with the territory. The reason Paris is at the top of this list is not because of its famous
attractions but because of its charm. You can spend the day walking around cobblestone streets and enjoy elegant

Older adults who sleep six hours or fewer a night may have elevated risk for dementia(痴呆症) and other
cognitive (认知的) issues, a new study finds.
Researchers at Stanford University measured seniors' (ages 65 to 85) dementia risk and cognitive abilities,
finding higher risk in those patients who regularly slept six or fewer hours compared to those who slept seven or
eight hours. Those seniors who slept nine or more hours also had lower cognitive functions and other health
issues, but the researchers didn't find the same high dementia risk in this group.
The findings demonstrate how important it is for adults to maintain a healthy sleep cycle, especially as they
get older.
As adults age, it's common for their sleep patterns to change or becomedisrupted— leading to longer, shorter,

For some people, there’s no better companion than mans best friend-a dog. This four-legged pet can bring
comfort and joy and provide much- needed exercise for you when it needs walkies! This probably explains why
dog ownership increased last year because people spent more time at home during he CovID-I9 lockdown.
However, as demand for a new dog increased, so did the price tag. Popular breeds, such as Cockapoos and
Cocker Spaniels, saw even sharper price increases, and puppies have been selling for $3,000 or more.
Animal welfare charities fearthat high prices could encourage puppy farming, smuggling (走私) or dog theft.
An investigation found some breeders have been selling puppies and kittens on social media sites--something

The question of whether our government should promote science and technology or the liberal arts in higher
education isn’t an either / or one, although the current emphasis on preparing young Americans for STEM (science,

that the study of the humanities and social sciences must remain central elements of America’s educational
system at all levels. Both areas are the key to producing citizens who can participate effectively in our democratic

Getting your kid to bed at night is seriously one of the most challenging things you'll ever have to do. Most
kids are just so full of energy that they'll tire you out before they're halfway through their store of energy. An easy
thing to calm down your child to get into bed is giving in and allowing some iPad screen time. However, it's really
not a great idea, just like you thought.
Researchers at theArizonaStateUniversityconducted a study with 547 kids between the ages of 7 to 9. Their
parents tracked how much screen time the kids were allowed along with their sleep patterns. The study found
that kids who did not engage in screen time before bed slept for 23 more minutes every week and also went to
