Book 3-Unit 7
3. Write down one of the ideas held by some men which Mr. Wright thinks is “nonsense”. There are many jobs women can’t do, or can’t do well. Or: Women are unreliable and irrational. Or: Women depend too little on cool reasoning and too much on intuition and instinct to arrive at decisions. Or: Women are not capable of thinking clearly.
Example
(A story from a senior academic in his 70’s)
In my hometown which is a small village, men and women used to be very different in the social roles that they played. Men were supposed to make money to support the family and to represent the household. Women, in contrast, should stay at home to manage the household work, and look after the children and husband. The life of women was strictly restricted to the home. If the family invited a guest to a dinner, the husband would eat with the guest in the hall, but the wife and children usually ate in the kitchen. Now times have changed. Men and women tend to share the responsibilities of both supporting the family working on the farm. Therefore, women can enjoy many things that used to be the privilege to men in the old days.

Lessonl A puma at largePumas are large, cat-like animals which are found in America. When reports came into London Zoo that a wild puma had been spotted forty-five miles south of London, they were not taken seriously. However, as the evidence began to accumulate, experts from the Zoo felt obliged to investigate, for the descriptions given by people who claimed to have seen the puma were extraordinarily similar. The hunt for the pumabegan in a small village where a woman picking blackberries saw 'a large cat' only five yards awayfrom her. It immediately ran away when she saw it, and experts confirmed that a puma will not attack a human being unless it is cornered (adj. 被困得走投无路的).The search proved difficult, for the pumawas often observed at one place in the morning and at another place twenty miles awayin the evening. Wherever it went, it left behind it a trail of dead deer and small animals like rabbits. Paw prints were seen in a number of places and puma fur was found clingingto bushes. Several people complained of 'cat-like noises' at night and a businessman on a fishingtrip saw the pumaup a tree. The experts were now fully convinced that the animal was a puma, but where had it come from ? As nopumas had been reported missing from any zoo in the country, this one must have been in the possession of a private collector and somehowmanagedto escape. The hunt went on for several weeks, but the puma was not caught. It is disturbing to think that a dangerous wild animal is still at large in the quiet countryside.Lesson 2 Thirteen equals oneOur vicar is always raising moneyfor one cause or another, but he has never managedto get enough money to have the church clock repaired. The big clock which used to strike the hours day and night was damaged many years ago and has been silent ever since.'One night, however, our vicar woke up with a start: the clock was striking the hours! Looking at his watch, he saw that it was one o'clock, but the bell struck thirteen times before it stopped. Armed with a torch, the vicar went up into the clock tower to see what was going on. In the torchlight, he caught sight of a figure whom he immediately recognized as Bill Wilkins, our local grocer. 'Whatever are you doing up here Bill ?' asked the vicar in surprise.'I'm trying to repair the bell,' answered Bill.' I've been coming up here night after night for weeks now. You see, I washoping to give you a surprise.''You certainly did give me a surprise!' said the vicar.'You've probably woken up everyone in the village as well. Still, I'm glad the bell is working again.' 'That's the trouble, vicar,' answered Bill. 'It's working all right, but I'm afraid that at one o'clock it will strike thirteen times and there's nothing I can do about it.''We'll get used to that Bill,' said the vicar.'Thirteen is not as good as one but it's betterWORDthan nothing. Now let's go downstairs and have a cup of tea.'Lesson 3 An unknown goddessSome time ago , an interesting discovery was made by archaeologists on the Aegean (adj. 爱琴海的;n. ) island of Kea. An American team explored a temple which stands in an ancient city on the promontory of Ayia Irini . The city at one time must have been prosperous , for it enjoyed a high level of civilization . Houses--often three storeys high--were built of stone . They had large rooms with beautifully decorated walls . The city was even equipped with a drainage system, for a great many clay pipes were found beneath the narrow streets .The temple which the archaeologists explored was used as a place of worship from the fifteenth century B.C. until Romartimes. In the most sacred room of the temple, clay fragments of fifteen statues were found. Each of these represented a goddess and had, at one time, been painted. Thebody of one statue was found amongremains dating from the fifteenth century B.C. Its missing head happened to be amongremains of the fifth century B.C. This head must have been found in Classical times and carefully preserved. It was veryold and precious even then. When the archaeologists reconstructed the fragments, they were amazedto find that the goddess turned out to be a very modern-looking woman. She stood three feet high and her hands rested on her hip. She was wearing a full-length skirt which swept the ground. Despite her great age, she was very graceful indeed, but, so far, the archaeologists have been unable to discover her identity.Lesson4 The double life of Alfred BloggsThese days, people who do manual work often receive far more money than clerks who work in offices. People who work in offices are frequently referred to as' white collar workers' for the simple reason that they usually wear a collar and tie to go to work. Such is humannature, that a great many people are often willing to sacrifice higher pay for the privilege of becoming white collar workers. This can give rise to curious situations, as it did in the case of Alfred Bloggs who worked as a dustman for the Ellesmere Corporation. When he got married, Alf was too embarrassed to say anything to his wife about his job. He simply told her that he worked for the Corporation. Every morning, he left home dressed in a smart black suit. He then changed into overalls(n.工作月艮)and spent the next eight hours as a dustman. Before returning homeat night, he took a shower and changed back into his suit. Alf did this for over two years and his fellow dustmen kept his secret. Alf's wife has never discovered that she married a dustman and she never will, for Alf has just found another job. He will soon be working in an office as a junior clerk. He will be earning only half as much as he used to, but he feels that his rise in status is well worth the loss of money. From now on, he will wear a suitall day and others will call him 'Mr. Bloggs', not 'Alf'.Lesson 5 The factsEditors of newspapers and magazines often go to extremes to provide their readers with unimportant facts and statistics. Last year a journalist had been instructed by a well-known magazine to write an article on the president's palace in a newAfrican republic. Whenthe article arrived, the editor read the first sentence and then refused to publish it. The article began: 'Hundreds of steps lead to the high wall which surrounds the president's palace.' The editor at once sent the journalist a fax instructing him to find out the exact number of steps andthe height of the wall. The journalist immediately set out to obtain theseimportant facts, but he took a long time to send them. Meanwhile, the editor was getting impatient, for the magazine would soon go to press. He sent the journalist two urgent telegrams, but received no reply. He sent yet another telegram informing the journalist that if he did not reply soon he would be fired. Whenthe journalist again failed to reply, the editor reluctantly published the article as it had originally been written. A weeklater, the editor at last received a telegram from the journalist. Not only had the poor man been arrested, but he had been sent to prison as well. However, he had at last been allowed to send a cable in which he informed the editor that he had been arrested while counting the 1084 steps leading to the 15-foot wall which surrounded the president's palace.Lesson 6 Smash-and-grabThe expensive shops in a famous arcade near Piccadilly were just opening. At this time of the morning, the arcade was almost empty. Mr Taylor, the owner of a jewellery shop was admiring anew window display. Two of his assistants had been working busily since 8 o'clock and had only justfinished. Diamond necklaces and rings had been beautifully arranged on a background of black velvet. After gazing at the display for several minutes, Mr Taylor went back into his shop. The silence was suddenly broken when a large car, with its headlights on and its horn blaring, roared downthe arcade. It came to a stop outside the jeweler's. One man stayed at the wheel while two others with black stockings over their faces jumped out and smashedthe window of the shop with iron bars. While this was going on, Mr Taylor was upstairs. He and his staff began throwing furniture out of the window. Chairs and tables went flying into the arcade. One of the thieves was struck by a heavy statue, but he was too busy helping himself to diamonds to notice any pain. The raid was all over in three minutes, for the men scrambled back into the car and it moved off at a fantastic speed. Just as it was leaving, Mr Taylor rushed out and ran after it throwing ashtrays and vases, butit was impossible to stopthe thieves. They had got away with thousands of pounds worth of diamonds.Lesson 7 Mutilated ladiesChildren often have far more sense than their elders. This simple truth wasdemonstrated rather dramatically during a civil defence exercise in a small town in Canada. Most of the inhabitants were asked to take part in the exercise during which they had to pretend that their city had been bombed. Air-raid warnings were sounded and thousands of people went into special air-raid shelters. Doctors and nurses remained above ground while Police patrolled the streets in case anyone tried to leave the shelters too soon. The police did not have much to do because the citizens took the exercise seriously. They stayed underground for twenty minutes and waited for the siren to sound again. On leaving the air-raid shelters, they saw that doctors and nurses were busy.A great many people had volunteered to act as casualties. Theatrical make-up and artificial blood had been used to make the injuries look realistic. A lot of People were lying 'dead' in the streets. The living helped to carry the dead and wounded to special stations. A Child of six was brought in by two adults. The child was supposed to be dead. With theatrical make-up on his face, he looked as if he had died of shock. Some people were so moved by the sight that they began to cry. However, the child suddenly sat up and a doctor asked him to comment on his death. The child looked around for a momentand said, 'I think they're all crazy!'Lesson8 A famous monasteryThe Great St Bernard Pass connects Switzerland to Italy. At 2470 metres, it is the highest mountain pass in Europe. The famous monastery of St Bernard, which was founded in the eleventh century, lies about a mile away. For hundreds of years, St Bernard dogs have saved the lives of travellers crossing the dangerous Pass. These friendly dogs, which were first brought from Asia, were used as watch-dogs even in Roman times. Now that a tunnel has been built through the mountains, the Pass is less dangerous, but each year, the dogs are still sent out into the snow whenever a traveller is in difficulty. Despite the new tunnel, there are still a few people whorashly attempt to cross the Pass on foot.During the summer months, the monastery is very busy, for it is visited by thousands of people who cross the Pass in cars, As there are so many people about, the dogs have to be kept in a special enclosure. In winter, however, life at themonastery is quite different. The temperature drops to -30 and very few people attempt to cross the Pass. The monks Prefer winter to summer for they have more privacy. The dogs have greater freedom, too, for they are allowed to wander outsidetheir enclosure. The only regular visitors to the monastery in winter are parties of skiers who go there at Christmas and Easter. These young people, who love the peace of the mountains, always receive a warm.Welcome at St Bernard's monastery.Lesson9By now, a rocket will have set off on its 35 million mile trip to Mars and scientists must be waiting anxiously for the results. The rocket will be travelling for six months before it reaches the planet. It contains a number of scientific instruments, including a television camera. Any pictures that are taken will have to travel for three minutes before they reach the earth. If the pictures are successful, they may solve a number of problems about Mars and provide information about the markings on its surface which, nearly 100 years ago, the astronomer, Schiaparelli, thought to be canals. It will be a long time before any landing on Mars can be attempted. This will only be possible when scientists have learnt a lot more about the atmosphere that surrounds the planet. If a satellite can one day be put into orbit round Mars, scientists will be able to find out a great deal. An interesting suggestion for measuring the atmosphere around Mars has been put forward. A rubber ball containing a radio transmitter could be dropped from a satellite so that it would fall towards the surface of the planet. The radio would signal the rate which the ball was slowed downand scientists would be able to calculate how dense the atmosphere is. It mayeven be possible to drop a capsule containing scientific instruments on to the planet's surface. Only when a great deal more information has been obtained, will it be possible to plan a manned trip to Mars.Lesson10 The loss of TitanicThe great ship, Titanic, sailed for New York from Southampton on April 10th, 1912. She was carrying 1316 passengers and a crew of 89l. Even by modern standards, the 46,000 ton Titanic was a colossal ship. At that time, however, she was not only the largest ship that had ever been built, but was regarded as unsinkable, for she had sixteen water-tight compartments. Even if two of these were flooded, she would still be able to float. The tragic sinking of this great liner will always be remembered, for she went down on herfirst voyage with heavy loss of life.Four days after setting out, while the Titanic was sailing across the icy waters of the North Atlantic, a huge iceberg was suddenly spotted by a look-out. After the alarm had been given, the great ship turned sharply to avoid a direct collision. The Titanic turned just in time, narrowly missing the immense wall of ice which rose over 100 feet out of the water beside her. Suddenly, there was a slight trembling sound from below, and the captain went down to see what had happened. The noise had been so faint that no one thought that the ship had been damaged. Below, the captain realized to his horror that the Titanic was sinking rapidly, for five of her sixteen watertight compartments had already been flooded ! The order to abandon ship was given and hundreds ofpeople plunged into the icy water. As there were not enough life-boats for everybody, 1500 lives were lost.Lesson11 Not guiltyGoing through the Customsis a tiresome business. The strangest thing about it is that really honest people are often madeto feel guilty. The hardened professional smuggler, on the other hand, is never troubled by such feelings, even if he has five hundred gold watches hidden in his suitcase. When I returned from abroad recently, a particularly officious young Customs Officer clearly regarded me as a smuggler.'Have you anything to declare?' he asked, looking me in the eye. 'No,' I answered confidently.'Would you mind unlocking this suitcase please ?' 'Not at all,' I answered. The Officer went through the case with great care. All the things I had packed so carefully were soon in a dreadful mess. I felt sure I would never be able to close the case again. Suddenly, I saw the Officer's face light up. He had spotted a tiny bottle at the bottom of my case and he pounced on it with delight.'Perfume, eh?' he asked sarcastically. 'You should have declared that.' Perfume is not exempt from import duty.''But it isn't perfume,' I said.' It's hair-oil.' Then I added with a smile,' It's a strange mixture I makemyself.' As I expected, he did not believe me.'Try it!' I said encouragingly. The Officer unscrewed the cap and put the bottle to his nostrils. He was greeted by an unpleasant smell which convinced him that I was telling the truth. A few minutes later, I was able to hurry away with precious chalk-marks on my baggage.Lesson12 Life on a desert islandMost of us have formed an unrealistic picture of life on a desert island. We sometimes imagine a desert island to be a sort of paradise where the sun always shines. Life there is simple and good. Ripe fruit falls from the trees and you never have to work. The other side of the picture is quite the opposite. Life on a desert island is wretched. You either starve to death or live like Robinson Crusoe, waiting for a boat which never comes.Perhaps there is an element of truth in both these pictures, but few of us have had the opportunity to find out.Two men who recently spent five days on a coral island wished they had stayed there longer. They were taking a badly damaged boat from the Virgin Islands to Miami to have it repaired. During the journey, their boat began to sink. They quicklyloaded a small rubber dinghy with food, matches, and tins of beer and rowed for a few miles across the Caribbean until they arrived at a tiny coral island. There were hardly any trees on the island and there was no water, but this did not prove tobe a problem. The mencollected rain-water in the rubber dinghy. As they had brought a spear gunwith them, they had plenty to eat. They caught lobster and fish every day, and, as one of them put it 'ate like kings'. When a passing tanker rescued them five days later, both men were genuinely sorry that they had to leave. Lesson13 It ' s only me After her husband had gone to work, Mrs Richards sent her children to school and went upstairs to her bedroom. She was too excited to do any housework that morning, for in the evening she would be going to a fancy dress party with her husband. She intended to dress up as a ghost and as she had madeher costume the night before, she was impatient to try it on. Though the costume consisted only of a sheet, it was very effective. After putting it on, Mrs Richards went downstairs. She wanted to find out whether it would be comfortable to wear.Just as Mrs Richards was entering the dining-room, there was a knock on the front door. She knew that it must be the baker. She had told him to comestraight in if ever she failed to openthe door and to leave the bread on the kitchen table. Not wanting to frighten the poor man, Mrs Richards quickly hid in the small store-room under the stairs. She heard the front door open and heavy footsteps in the hall. Suddenly the door of the store-room was opened and a man entered.Mrs Richards realized that it must be the manfrom theElectricity Board who had come to read the meter. She tried to explain the situation, saying' It's only me', but it was too late. The man let out a cry and jumped back several paces. When Mrs Richards walked towards him, he fled, slamming the door behind him.Lesson14 A noble gangsterThere was a time when the owners of shop and businesses in Chicago had to pay large sums of moneyto gangsters in return for' protection' If the money was not paid promptly, the gangsters would quickly put a man out of business bydestroying his shop. Obtaining 'protechon money' is not a modern crime. As long ago as the fourteenth century, an Englishman, Sir John Hawkwood, made the remarkable discovery that people would rather pay large sums of money than havetheir life work destroyed by gangsters.Six hundred years ago, Sir John Hawkwood arrived in Italy with a band of soldiers and settled near Florence. He soon made a name for himself and came to be known to the Italians as Giovanni Acuto. Whenever the Italian city-states were at war with each other, Hawkwoodised to hire his soldiers to princes who were willing to pay the high price he demanded. In times of peace, whenbusiness was bad, Hawkwoodand his menwould march into a city-state and, after burning down a few farms, would offer to go away if protection money was paid to them. Hawkwood made large sums of money in this way. In spite of this, the Italians regarded him as a sort of hero. When he died at the age of eighty, the Florentines gave him a state funeral and had a picture painted which was dedicated to the memory of 'the most valiant soldier and most notable leader, Signor Giovanni Haukodue'.Lesson15 Fifty pence worth of troubleChildren always appreciate small gifts of money. Father, of course, provides a regular supply of pocket-money, but uncles and aunts are always a source of extra income. With some children, small sums go a long way. If sixpences are not exchanged for sweets, they rattle for months inside money-boxes. Only verythrifty children manage to fill up a money-box. For most of them, sixpence is a small price to pay for a satisfying bar of chocolate. My nephew, George, has a money-box but it is always empty. Very few of the sixpences I have given him have found their way there. I gave him sixpence yesterday and advised him to save it. Instead, he bought himself sixpence worth of trouble. Onhis way to the sweet shop, he dropped his sixpence and it rolled along the pavement and then disappeared down a drain. George took off his jacket, rolled up his sleeves and pushed his right arm through the drain cover. He could not find his sixpence anywhere, and what is more, he could not get his arm out. A crowd of people gathered round him and a lady rubbed his arm with soap and butter, but George was firmly stuck. The fire-brigade was called and two firemen freed George using aspecial type of grease. George was not too upset by his experience because the lady who owns the sweet shop heard about his troubles and rewarded him with a large box of chocolates.Lesson16 Mary had a little lambMary and her husband Dimitri lived in the tiny village ofPerachora in southern Greece. One of Mary's prize possessions was a little white lamb which her husband had given her. She kept it tied to a tree in a field during the day and went to fetch it every evening. Oneevening, however, the lamb was missing. The rope had been cut, so it was obvious that the lamb had been stolen. When Dimitri camein from the fields, his wife told him what had happened. Dimitri at once set out to find the thief. He knew it would not prove difficult in such a small village. After telling several of his friends about the theft, Dimitri found out that his neighbour, Aleko, had suddenly acquired a new lamb. Dimitri immediately went to Aleko's house and angrily accused him of stealing the lamb. He told him he had better return it or he would call the police. Aleko denied taking it and led Dimitri into his back-yard. It was true that he had just bought a lamb, he explained, but his lamb was black. Ashamedof having acted so rashly, Dimitri apologized to Aleko for having accused him. While they were talking it began to rain and Dimitri stayed in Aleko's house until the rain stopped. When he went outside half an hour later, he was astonished to find that the little black lamb was almost white. Its wool, which had been dyed black, had been washed clean by the rain !Lesson17 The longest suspension bridge in the world Verrazano, an Italian about whom little is known, sailed into New York Harbour in 1524 and named it Angouleme. He described it as 'a very agreeable situation located within two small hills in the midst of which flowed a great river.' Though Verrazano is by no means considered to be a great explorer, his name will probably remain immortal, for on November 21st, 1964, the greatest bridge in the world was namedafter him.The Verrazano Bridge, which was designed by Othmar Ammann, joins Brooklyn to Staten Island. It has a span of 4260 feet. The bridge is so long that the shape of the earth had to be taken into account by its designer. Twogreat towers support four huge cables. The towers are built on immense underwater platforms madeof steel and concrete. The platforms extend to a depth of over 100 feet under the sea. These alone took sixteen months to build. Above the surface of the water, the towers rise to a height of nearly 700 feet. They supportthe cables from which the bridge has been suspended. Each of the four cables contains 26,108 lengths of wire. It has been estimated that if the bridge were packed with cars, it would still only be carrying a third of its total capacity. However, size and strength are not the only important things about thisbridge. Despite its immensity, it is both simple and elegant, fulfilling its designer's dream to create 'an enormous object drawn as faintly as possible'.Lesson18 Electric currents in modern artModern sculpture rarely surprises us any more. The idea that modern art can only be seen in museumsis mistaken. Even people who take no interest in art cannot have failed to notice examples of modern sculpture on display in public places. Strange forms stand in gardens, and outside buildings and shops. We have got quite used to them. Someso-called 'modern' pieces have been on display for nearly fifty years. In spite of this, some people-including myself--were surprised by a recent exhibition of modern sculpture. Thefirst thing I saw when I entered the art gallery was a notice which said: 'Do not touch the exhibits. Some of them are dangerous!' The objects on display were pieces of moving sculpture. Oddly shaped forms that are suspended from the ceiling and move in response to a gust of wind are quite familiar to everybody. These objects, however, were different. Lined up against the wall, there were long thin wires attached to metal spheres. The spheres had been magnetized andattracted or repelled each other all the time. In the centreof the hall, there were a number of tall s tructures which containedcoloured lights. These lights flickered continuously like traffic lights which have gone mad. Sparks were emitted from small black boxes and red lamps flashed on and off angrily. It was rather like an exhibition ofprehistoric electronic equipment. These Peculiar forms notonly seemeddesigned to shock people emotionally, but to give them electric shocks as well !Lesson19 A very dear catKidnappers are rarely interested in Animals, but they recently took considerable interest in Mrs Eleanor Ramsay's cat. Mrs Eleanor Ramsay, a very wealthy old lady, has shared a flat with her cat, Rastus, for a great manyyears. Rastus leads an orderly life. He usually takes a short walk in the evenings and is always homeby seven o'clock. One evening, however, he failed to arrive. Mrs Ramsay got very worried. She looked everywhere for him but could not find him.Three day after Rastus' disappearance, Mrs Ramsay received an anonymous letter. The writer stated that Rastus was in safehands and would be returned immediately if Mrs Ramsaypaid a ransom of &1000. Mrs Ramsay was instructed to place the money in a cardboard box and to leave it outside her door. At first, she decided to go to the police, but fearing that she would never see Rastus again--the letter had made that quite clear--she changed her mind. She drew &1000 from her bank and followed the kidnapper's instructions. The next morning, the box had disappeared but Mrs Ramsay was sure that the kidnapper would keep his word. Sure enough, Rastus arrived punctually at seven o'clock that evening. Helooked very well, though he was rather thirsty, for he drank half a bottle of milk. The police were astounded whenMrs Ramsay told them what she haddone. She explained that Rastus was very dear to her. Considering the amount she paid, he was dear in more ways than one!Lesson20 Pioneer pilotsIn 1908 Lord Northcliffe offered a prize of &1000 to the first man who would fly across the English Channel. Over a year passed before the first attempt was made. OnJuly 19th, 1909, in。

Unit 3 Oceans of SandIntroductionOceans of Sand is a piece of exposition or expository writing. The word "exposition" comes from the past participle of the Latin word for expound. When we write an exposition, we write mainly to expound or explain. The intention or purpose of the writer of exposition (informative writing) is to inform or explain. He appeals to a reader's understanding with verifiable facts and valid information, explaining and interpreting that material so that the reader will accept his point of view or explanation. Planning an expository composition is affected by the particular kind of exposition being planned. In general, there are three kinds: exposition that defines, exposition that informs, and exposition that explains. Often one exposition contains all three kinds, just as the case in this essay. The object of this essay is to tell people some information about deserts. Deserts are dry places situated near the equator. It is difficult for life to survive there owing to extreme changes in temperature and very low rainfall. However, some plants, animals and people have developed strategies for survival in the desert. The essay is developed mainly by classification and examples. Writing a classification needs to divide or classify a subject according to a single principle, just as this essay shows, it is developed under five sub-titles: living in a desert climate, how plants survive, animal life, desert peoples, and on the move.Examples are so important to writing that most essays use them. The examples help readers fully understand the points. Lively, specific examples also add interest to the essay. Unit 1 Festivals around the worldFESTIVALS AND CELEBRATIONSFestivals and celebrations of all kinds have been held everywhere since ancient times. Most ancient festivals would celebrate the end of cold weather, planting in spring and harvest in autumn. Sometimes celebrations would be held after hunters had caught animals. At thattime people would starve if food was difficult to find, especially during the cold winter months. Today’s festivals have many origins, some religious, some seasonal, and some for special people or events.Festivals of the deadSome festivals are held to honour the dead or to satisfy the ancestors, who might return either to help or to do harm. For the Japanese festival Obon, people should go to clean graves and light incense in memory of their ancestors. They also light lamps and play music because they think that will lead the ancestors back to earth. In Mexico, people celebratethe Day of the Dead in early November. On this important feast day, people eat food in the shape of skulls and cakes with “bones”on them. They offer food, flowers and gifts to the dead. The Western holiday Halloween also had its origin in old beliefs about the return of the spirits of dead people. It is now a children ’s festival, when they can dress up and go to their neighbours’homes to ask for sweets. If the neighbours do not give any sweets, the children might play a trick on them.Festivals to Honour PeopleFestivals can also be held to honour famous people. The Dragon Boat Festival in China honours the famous ancient poet, Qu Yuan. In the USA, Columbus Day is in memory of the arrival of Christopher Columbus inthe New World. India has a national festival on October 2 to honour Mohandas Gandhi, the leader who helped gain India’s independence from Britain.Harvest FestivalsHarvest and Thanksgiving festivals can be very happy events. People are grateful because their food is gathered for the winter and the agricultural work is over. In European countries, people will usually decorate churches and town halls with flowers and fruit, and will get together tohave meals. Some people might win awards for their farm produce, like the biggest watermelon or the most handsome rooster. China andJapan have mid-autumn festivals when people admire the moon and in China enjoy moon-cakes.Spring FestivalsThe most energetic and important festivals are the ones that look forward to the end of winter and to the coming of spring. At the Spring Festival in China, people eat dumplings, fish and meat and may give children lucky money in red paper. There are dragon dances and carnivals, and families celebrate the Lunar New Year together. Some Western countries have very exciting carnivals, which take place forty days before Easter, usually in February. These carnivals might include parades, dancing in the streets day and night, loud music and colourful clothing of al kinds. Easter is an important religious and social festival for Christians around the world. It celebrates the return of Jesus from the dead and the coming of spring and new life. Japan’s Cherry Blossom Festival happens a little later. The country, covered with cherry tree flowers, looks as though it is covered with pink snow.People love to get together to eat, drink and have fun with each other. Festivals let us enjoy life, be proud of our customs and forget our work for a little while.A SAD LOVE STORYLI Fang was heart-broken. It was Valentine ’s Day and Hu Jin had said she would meet him at the coffee shop after work. But she didn’tturn up. She could be with her friends right now laughing at him. She said she would be there at seven o’clock, and he thought she would keep her word. He had looked forward to meeting her all day, and now he was alone with his roses and chocolates, like a fool. Well, he was not going to hold his breath for her to apologize. He would drown his sadness in coffee. It was obvious that the manager of the coffee shop was waiting for Li Fang to leave - he wiped the tables, then sat down and turned on the TV - just what Li Fang needed! A sad Chinese story about lost love. The granddaughter of the Goddess of Heaven visited the earth. Her name was Zhin ü,the weaving girl. While she was on earth she met the herd boy Niulang and they fell in love. (“Just like me and Hu Jin,” thought Li Fang.) They got married secretly, and they were very happy. (“We could be like that,”thought Li Fang.) When the Goddess of Heaven knew that her granddaughter was married to a human, she became very angry and made the weaving girl return to Heaven. Niu Lang tried to follow her, but the river of stars, the Milky Way, stopped him. Finding that Zhin wasüheart-broken, her grandmother finally decided to let the couple cross the Milky Way to meet once a year. Magpies make a bridge of their wings so the couple can cross the river to meet on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month. People in China hope that the weatherwill be fine on that day, because if it is raining, it means that Zhin is weeping and the couple won’tbe able to meet. The announcer said, “This is the story of Qiqiao Festival. When foreigners hear about the story, they call it a Chinese Valentine ’s story. It’s a fine day today, so I hope you can call all meet the one you love”.As Li Fang set off for home, he thought, “Iguess Hu Jin doesn’tlove me. I’ll just throw these flowers and chocolates away. I don’twant them to remind me of her.”So he did.As he sadly passed the tea shop on the corner on his way home, he heard a voice calling him. There was Hu Jin waving at him and calling, “Why are you so late? I’ve been waiting for you for a long time! And I have a gift for you!”What would he do? He had thrown away her Valentine gifts! She would never forgive him. This would not be a happy Valentine’s Day!Unit 2 Healthy eatingCOME AND EAT HERE (I)Wang Peng sat in his empty restaurant feeling very frustrated. It had bee n a very strange morning. Usually he got up early and prepared his menu of barbecued mutton kebabs, roast pork, stir-fried vegetables and fried ric e. Then by lunchtime they would all be sold. By now his restaurant ought to be full of people. But not today! Why was that? What could have happened? He thought of his mutton, beef and bacon cooked in the hottest, fi nest oil. His cola was sugary and cold, and his ice cream was made of mil k, cream and delicious fruit. “Nothing could be better,” he thought. Su ddenly he saw his friend Li Chang hurrying by. “Hello, Lao Li, ” he cal led. “Your usual?” But Li Chang seemed not to hear. What was the ma tter? Something terrible must have happened if Li Chang was not coming toeat in his restaurant as he always did.Wang Peng followed Li Chang into a new small restaurant. He saw a sig n at the door.Tired of all that fat? Want to lose weight?Come inside Yong Hui's slimming restaurant.Only slimming foods served here.Make yourself thin again!Curiosity drove Wang Peng inside. It was full of people. The hostess, a very thin lady, came forward. “Welcome,” she said.“My name is Yo ng Hui.I ’ll help you lose weight and be fit in two weeks if you eat here e very day.” Then she gave a menu to Wang Peng. There were few choice s of food and drink on it: just rice, raw vegetables served in vinegar, fruit and water. Wang Peng was amazed at this and especially at the prices. It cost more than a good meal in his restaurant! He could not believe his ey es. He threw down the menu and hurried outside. On his way home he th ought about his own menu. Did it make people fat? Perhaps he should go to the library and find out. He could not have Yong Hui getting away wit h telling people lies! He had better do some research! At the library Wang Peng was surprised to find that his restaurant served far too much fat and Yong Hui’s far too little. Even though her customer s might get thin after eating Yong Hui’s food, they were not eating enoug h energy-giving food to keep them fit. They would become tired very qui ckly. Wang Peng felt more hopeful as he drove back home. Perhaps with a discount and a new sign he could win his customers back. So he wrote: Want to feel fit and energetic?Come and eat here! Discounts today! Our food gives you energy all day !The competition between the two restaurants was on!COME AND EAT HERE (II)A week later, Wang Peng’s restaurant was nearly full and he felt happi er. Perhaps he would be able to earn his living after all and not have to cl ose his restaurant. He did not look forward to being in debt because his r estaurant was no longer popular. He smiled as he welcomed some custom ers warmly at the door but the smile left his face when he saw Yong Hui walking in. She did not look happy but glared at him. “May I ask what you were doing in my restaurant the other day? I thought you were a new customer and now I know that you only came to spy on me and my men u,” she shouted.“Please excuse me,” he calmly explained, “I wante d to know where all my customers had gone last week. I followed one of them and found them in your restaurant. I don’twant to upset you, but I f ound your menu so limited that I stopped worrying and started advertisin g the benefits of my food. Why don’tyou sit down and try a meal?”Yong Hui agreed to stay and soon they were both enjoying dumplings a nd breast of chicken cooked with garlic. When they were served the icec ream, Yong Hui began to look ill. “ I feel sick with all this fat and heavy food,” she said,“I miss my vegetables and fruit”. Wang Peng was enj oying a second plate of dumplings so he sighed“.Yes,” he added,“an d I would miss my dumplings and fatty pork. Don,t you get tired quickly ?” “Well, I do have to rest a lot,” admitted Yong Hui. “But don’tyo u think it would be better if you were a bit thinner? I’m sure you’d feel m uch healthier.”They began to talk about menus and balanced diets“. According to my research, neither your restaurant nor mine offers a balanced diet,” expla ined Wang Peng.“I don’toffer enough fibre and you don’toffer enough body-building and energy-giving food. Perhaps we ought to combine our ideas and provide a balanced menu with food full of energy and fibre”. So that is what they did. They served raw vegetables with the hamburger s and boiled the potatoes rather than fried them. They served fresh fruit w ith the ice cream. In this way they cut down the fat and increased thefibre in the meal. Their balanced diets became such a success that before long Wang Peng became slimmer and Yong Hui put on more weight. Two old and wealthy brothers, Roderick and Oliver, have made a bet. Oliver believes that with a million pound bank note a man could survive a month in London. His brother Roderick doubts it. At this moment, they see a penniless young man wandering on the pavement outside their house. It is Henry Adams, an American businessman, who is lost in London and does not know what he should do.RODERICK:Young man, would you step inside a moment, please? HENRY: Who? Me, sir?RODERICK: Yes, you.OLIVER: Through the front door on your left.HENRY: (a servant opens a door)Thanks.SERVANT: Good morning, sir. Would you please come in? Permit me to lead the way, sir.OLIVER: (Henry enters) Thank you, James. That will be all. RODERICK: How do you do, Mr ⋯ er ⋯?HENRY: Adams. Henry Adams.OLIVER: Come and sit down, Mr Adams.HENRY: Thank you.RODERICK: Your are an American?HENRY: That’s right, from San Francisco.RODERICK: How well do you know London?HENRY: Not at all. It’s my first trip here.RODERICK: I wonder, Mr Adams, if you mind us asking a fewquestions?HENRY: Not at all. Go right ahead.RODERICK: May we ask what you ’re doing in this country and what your plans are?HENRY: Well, I can’tsay that I have any plans. I’m hoping to find work. As a matter of fact, I landed in Britain by accident.RODERICK: How is that possible?HENRY: Well, you see, back home I have my own boat. About a month ago, I was sailing out of the bay ⋯ (his eyesstare at what is left of the brothers’dinner on the table) OLIVER: Well, go on.HENRY: Oh, yes. Well, towards nightfall I found myself carried out to sea by a strong wind. It was all my fault. I didn’tknow whether I could survive until morning. The next morning I ’d just about given myself up for lost when I was spotted by a ship.OLIVER: And it was the ship that brought you to England. HENRY: Yes. The fact is that I earned my passage by working as an unpaid hand, which accounts for my appearance. I went tothe American embassy to seek help, but⋯(the brotherssmile at each other)RODERICK: Well, you mustn’tworry about that. It’s an advantage. HENRY: I’m afraid I don’tquite follow you, sir.RODERICK: Tell us, Mr Adams, what sort of work did you do in America?HENRY: I worked for a mining company. Could you offer me some kind of work here?RODERICK: Patience, Mr Adams. If you don’tmind, may I ask how much money you have?HENRY: Well, to be honest, I have none.RODERICK: (happily) What luck! Brother, what luck! (claps his hands together)HENRY: Well, it may seem lucky to you but not to me! On the contrary, in fact. If this is your idea of some kind of joke,I don’tthink it ’s very funny. (Henry stands up to leave)Now if you ’ll excuse me, I think I’ll be on my way. RODERICK: Please don’tgo Mr Adams. You mustn’tthink we don’t care about you. Oliver, give him the letter.OLIVER: Yes, the letter. (gets it from a desk and gives it to Henry like a gift) The letter.HENRY: (taking it carefully) For me?RODERICK: For you. (Henry starts to open it) Oh, no, you mustn ’topen it. Not yet. You can ’t open it until two o ’clock.HENRY: Oh, this is silly.RODERICK: Not silly. There ’s money in it. (calls to the servant)James?HENRY: Oh, no. I don ’twant your charity. I just want an honestjob.RODERICK: We know you ’re hard-working. That ’s why we have givenyou the letter. James, show Mr Adams out. OLIVER:Good luck, Mr Adams. HENRY:Well, why don ’tyou explain what this is all about? RODERICK: You ’ll soon know. (looks at the clock) In exactly an hourand a half.SERVANT:RODERICK:HENRY:Act I, Scene 4This way, sir. Mr Adams, not until 2 o ’clock. Promise? Promise. Goodbye. (Outside a restaurant Henry looks at the envelope without opening it and decide to go in. He sits down at a table next to the front window.)OWNER: (seeing Henry ’s poor appearance) That one ’s reserved. This way, please. (to the waiter) Take this gentleman ’s order, Horace.HENRY: (after sitting down and putting the letter on the table) I ’d like some ham and eggs and a nice big steak. Make it extra thick.’dIalso like a cup of coffee and a pineapple dessert.WAITER:Right, sir. I ’m afraid it ’ll cost a large amount of money.HENRY: I understand. And i ’ll have a large glass of beer.WAITER: OK. (The waiter leaves and soon returns with all the food.)HOSTESS: My goodness! Why, look at him. He eats like a wolf.OWNER: We ’ll see if he ’s clever as a wolf, eh?HENRY: (having just finished every bit of food) Ah, waiter. (the waiter returns) Same thing again, please. Oh, and another beer. WAITER:Again? Everything?HENRY: Yes, that’s right. (sees the look on the waiter’s face) Anything wrong?WAITER: No, not at all. (to the owner) He’s asked for more of the same.OWNER: Well, it is well-known that Americans like to eat a lot. Well, we’ll have to take a chance. Go ahead and let him have it.WAITER: (reading the bill after the meal) All right. That ’s two orders of ham and eggs, two extra thick steaks, two large glasses of beer, two cups of coffee and two desserts.HENRY: (looking at the clock on the wall) Would you mind waiting justa few minutes?WAITER: (in a rude manner) What’s there to wait for?OWNER: All right, Horace. I ’ll take care of this.HENRY: (to the owner) That was a wonderful meal. It ’s amazing how much pleasure you get out of the simple things in life, especially if you can’thave them for a while.OWNER: Yes, very interesting. Now perhaps, sir, if you pay your billI can help the other customers.HENRY: (looking at the clock on the wall again) Well, I see it’s two o’clock. (he opens the envelope and holds a million pound bank note in his hands. Henry is surprised but the owner and the waiter are shocked) I ’m very sorry. But ⋯ I ⋯ I don’thave anything smaller.OWNER: (still shocked and nervous) Well, ⋯ er ⋯ just one moment. Maggie, look! (the hostess screams, the other customers look at her and she puts a hand to her mouth)Do you think it ’s genuine? HOSTESS: Oh, dear, I don’tknow. I simply don’tknow.OWNER: Well, I did hear that the Bank of England had issued two notes in this amount ⋯ Anyway, I don ’tthink it ’s a fake. People would pay too much attention to a bank note of this amount. No thief would want that to happen.HOSTESS: But he’s in rags!OWNER: Perhaps he’s a very strange, rich man. (as if he has discovered something for the first time) Why, yes! That must be it! HOSTESS: (hits her husband’sarm) And you put him in the back ofthe restaurant! Go and see him at once.OWNER: (to Henry) I ’m so sorry, sir, so sorry, but I cannot change this bank note.HENRY: But it ’s all I have on me.OWNER: Oh, please, don’tworry, sir. Doesn’tmatter at all. We’re so very glad that you even entered our little eating place. Indeed, sir, I hope you’ll come here whenever you like.HENRY: Well, that’s very kind of you.OWNER: Kind, sir? No, it ’s kind of you. You must come whenever you want and have whatever you like. Just having you sit here is a great honour! As for the bill, sir, please forget it.HENRY: Forget it? Well ⋯ thank you very much. That’s very nice of you.OWNER: Oh, it ’s for us to thank you, sir and I do, sir, from the bottomof my heart. (The owner, the hostess and the waiter all bow as Henry leaves.)Unit 4 Astronomy: the science of the starsHOW LIFE BEGAN ON THE EARTHNo one knows exactly how the earth began, as it happened so long ago. However, according to a widely accepted theory, the universe beganwith a “Big Bang ”that threw matter in all directions. After that, atoms began to form and combine to create stars and other bodies. For several billion years after the “Big Bang”, the earth was still just a cloud of dust. What it was to become was uncertain until between 4.5 and 3.8 billion years ago when the dust settled into a solid globe. The earth became so violent that it was not clear whether the shape would last or not. It exploded loudly with fire and rock. They were in time to produce carbon dioxide, nitrogen, water vapour and other gases, which were to make the earth’s atmosphere. What is even more important is that as the earth cooled down, water began to appear on its surface.Water had also appeared on other planets like Mars but, unlike the earth, it had disappeared later. It was not immediately obvious that water was to be fundamental to the development of life. What many scientists believe is that the continued presence of water allowed the earth to dissolve harmful gases and acids into the oceans and seas. This produceda chain reaction, which made it possible for life to develop. Many millions of years later, the first extremely small plants began to appear on the surface of the water. They multiplied and filled the oceans and seas with oxygen, which encouraged the later development of early shellfish and all sorts of fish. Next, green plants began to grow on land. They were followed in time by land animals. Some were insects. Others, called amphibians, were able to live on land as well as in the water. Later when the plants grew into forests, reptiles appeared for the first time. They produced young generally by laying eggs. After that, some huge animals, called dinosaurs, developed. They laid eggs too and existed on the earth for more than 140 million years. However, 65 million years ago the age of the dinosaurs ended. Why they suddenly disappeared still remains a mystery. This disappearance made possible the rise of mammals on the earth. These animals were different from all life forms in the past, because they gave birth to young baby animals and produced milk to feed them. Finally about 2.6 million years ago some small clever animals, nowwith hands and feet, appeared and spread all over the earth. Thus they have, in their turn, become the most important animals on the planet. But they are not looking after the earth very well. They are putting too much carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, which prevents heat from escaping from the earth into space. As a result of this, many scientists believe the earth may become too hot to live on. So whether life will continue on the earth for millions of years to come will depend on whether this problem can be solved.A VISIT TO THE MOONLast month I was lucky enough to have a chance to make a trip into space with my friend Li Yanping, an astronomer. We visited the moon in our spaceship! Before we left, Li Yanping explained to me that the force of gravity would change three times on our journey and that the first change would be the most powerful. Then we were off. As the rocket rose into the air, we were pushed back into our seats because we were trying to escape the pull of the earth ’s gravity. It was so hard that we could not say anythingto each other. Gradually the weight lessened and I was able to talk to him. “Why is the spaceship not falling back to the earth? On the earth if I fall from a tree I will fall to the ground. ”I asked. “We are too far from the earth now to feel its pull,”he explained, “so we feel as if no gravity at all. When we get closer to the moon, we shall feel its gravity pulling us, butit will not be as strong a pull as the earth ’s.”I cheered up immediately and floated weightlessly around in our spaceship cabin watching the earth become smaller and the moon larger. When we got there, I wanted to explore immediately. “Come on,”I said. “If you are right, my weight will be less than on the earth because the moon is smaller and I will be able to move more freely. I might even grow taller if I stay here long enough. I shall certainly weigh less!”I laughed and climbed down the steps from the spaceship. But when I tried to step forward. I found I was carried twice as far as on the earth and fell over. “Oh dear,”I cried, “walking does need a bit of practice now that gravity has changed.”After a while I got the hang of it and we began to enjoy ourselves.Leaving the moon’s gravity was not as painful as leaving the earth ’s. But returning to the earth was very frightening. We watched, amazed as fire broke out on the outside of the spaceship as the earth’s gravity increased. Again we were pushed hard into our seats as we came backto land. “That was very exhausting but very exciting too, ”I said. “Now I know much more about gravity! Do you think we could visit some stars next time?”“Of course,”he smiled, “which star would you like to go to?”Unit 5 CANADA-“THE TRUE NORTH”A TRIP ON “THE TRUE NORTH”Li Daiyu and her cousin Liu Qian were on a trip to Canada to visit their cousins in Montreal on the Atlantic coast. Rather than take the aeroplane all the way, they decided to fly to Vancouver and then takethe train from west to east across Canada. The thought that they could cross the whole continent was exciting.Their friend, Danny Lin, was waiting at the airport. He was going to take them and their baggage to catch“The True North”, the cross-Canadatrain. On the way to the station, he chatted about their trip.“You’re going to see some great scenery. Going eastward, you’ll pass mountains and thousands of lakes and forests, as well as wide rivers and large cities. Some people have the idea that you can cross Canada in less than five days, but they forget the fact that Canada is 5,500 kilometres from coast to coast. Here in Vancouver, you’re in Canada’s warmest part. People say it is Canada’s most popular cities to live in. Its population is increasing rapidly. The coast north of Vancouver has some of the oldest and most beautiful forests in the world. It is so wet there that the treesare extremely tall, some measuring over 90 metres”.That afternoon aboard the train, the cousins settled down in their seats. Earlier that day, when they crossed the Rocky Mountains, they managed to catch sight of some mountain goats and even a grizzly bear and an eagle. Their next stop was Calgary, which is famous for the Calgary Stampede. Cowboys from all over the world come to compete in the Stampede. Many of them have a gift for riding wild horses and can win thousands of dollars in prizes. After two days ’travel, the girls began to realize that Canada is quite empty. At school, they had learned that most Canadians live within a few hundred kilometres of the USA border, and Canada’s population is only slightly over thirty million, but now they were amazed to see such an empty country. They went through a wheat-growing province and saw farms that covered thousands of acres. After dinner, they were back in an urban area, the busy port city of Thunder Bay at the top of the Great Lakes. The girls were surprised at the fact that ocean ships can sail up the Great Lakes. Because of the Great Lakes, they learned, Canada has more fresh water than any other country in the world. In fact, it has one-thirdof the world’s total fresh water, and much of it is in the Great Lakes. That night as they slept, the train rushed across the top of Lake Superior, through the great forests and southward towards Toronto.“THE TRUE NORTH”FROM TORONTO TO MONTREALThe next morning the bushes and maple trees outside their windows werered, gold and orange, and there was frost on the ground, confirming that fall had arrived in Canada.Around noon they arrived in Toronto, the biggest and most wealthy city in Canada. They were not leaving for Montreal until later, so they went on a tour of the city. They went up the tall CN Tower and looked across the lake. In the distance, they could see the misty cloud thatrose from the great Niagara Falls, which is on the south side of the lake. The water flows into the Niagara River and over the falls on its way to the sea. They saw the covered stadium, home of several famous basketball teams. As they walked north from the harbour area, Li Daiyu said, “Lin Fei, one of my mother ’s old schoolmates, lives here. I should phone her from a telephone booth”.They met Lin Fei around dusk in downtown Chinatown, one of the three in Toronto. Over dinner at a restaurant called The Pink Pearl, the cousins chatted with Lin Fei, who had moved to Canada many years earlier. “We can get good Cantonese food here,”Lin Fei told them, “because most of the Chinese people here come from South China, especially Hong Kong. It ’s too bad you can’t go as far as Ottawa, Canada’s capital. It’s approximately four hundred kilometres northeastof Toronto, so it would take too long.”The train left late that night and arrived in Montreal at dawn the next morning. At the station, people everywhere were speaking French. There were signs and ads in French, but some of them had English words in smaller letters. “We don’tleave until this evening,”said Liu Qian. “Let’s go downtown. Old Montreal is close to the water.”They spent the afternoon in lovely shops and visiting artists in their workplaces beside the water. As they sat in a buffet restaurant looking over the broad St Lawrence River, a young man sat down with them.“Hello, my name is Henri. I’m a student at the university nearby,”he said, “and I was wondering where you are from.”The girls told him they were on a train trip across Canada and that they had only one day in Montreal. “That’s too bad,”he said. “Montreal is a city with wonderful restaurants and clubs. Most of us speak both English and French, but the。

With the help of functional MRI he had begun to identify which areas of the brain are recruited when we engage with music. Some of these areas are evidently used for both music and other activities and some, such as the planum polare, in the temporal lobe, appear to be specialized for processing music. I wanted to know whether learning to sing could actually change the way my brain worked.
Text
Before the first scanning session I had a couple of lessons to get me used to singing and to provide the rudiments of reading music. I think Pam was shocked at my lack of ability – she is used to teaching experienced musicians and precocious children and hadn't actually believed me when I had said that I couldn't sing in tune or follow a rhythm. She soon learned better. The scan took place in June 2006 and was a gruelling experience.
