My Impressions of Shangnan High SchoolIt is a great privilege to write this article for you. I am doing an internship to complete my certification in TEFL - Teaching English as a Foreign Language. As part of the training program, I was offered an opportunity to get a semester of teaching experience, before going out to find a job as a teacher. It is amazing to think of all the little decisions that have been made to bring me here, to the Shangnan Senior High School, but I am very glad I came! I see Shangnan Senior High as a place where students and teachers desire the best, strive for the greatest, and hope that some day it will be just a little less grueling to get there. To describe my experience here in Shangnan, I’d like to take you with me through a day in my life here at school. In the morning, I leave the hotel where I am living, walk up Tea Street, and over to Shangnan Senior High School. After entering the school, I enjoy a breakfast of hot cereal, veggies and a warm steamed bun with the other teachers in the school. Standing in line, I look over the beautiful campus and my he art warms as I enjoy God’s creation around me and think about all the wonderful people I have met here.Although it is quite different from where I came from, and I continue to experience ‘culture shock’, little by little, Shangnan is starting to feel like home. One aspect of culture shock has been eating vegetables for breakfast. At first, it was strange. But, now that I have been here for a while, I even find myself looking forward to it! After finishing the hearty breakfast, which usually has more food than I can eat, I go to the English Teachers’ office on the third floor of building Three. The English Teachers’ Office allows me the opportunity to build many wonderful friendships. Although the other English teachers are always busy, efficiently marking exams and grading homework, they are kind enough to tell me about China, ask me about America, and make sure that things are going well. Mrs. Huang is one person in particular who is always concerned for my wellbeing. She tells me what is happening in the school, answers questions about my schedule, and helps me solve any problems that arise. She is always available on her cell phone andcares a lot about the foreign teachers in the school. In the office, I know most people by their English names. Judy loves to tellme stories about Chinese traditions and history. When we both have time, she teaches me a little Mandarin. Because of the tones and Characters, Mandarin is a very unique, complex and interesting language. Due to this complexity, it is difficult to learn, but it is a lovely language. Very often, I don’t know how America is different from China until someone explains how things work in China. Jacey and I have had some very interesting conversations. She is probably the person who has helped me understand these differences the most. Shelly was the first English teacher from Shangnan that I met. I met her when Samantha and I arrived in Xian on our way from Beijing to Shangnan. Shelly is always very, very busy, but she has also taken time to make me feel welcome and accepted here. She invited me to visit her family in the village and took me to see the Jinsi Gorge during our October holiday. There are many other teachers in the English office. They are all exceptionally nice and encouraging. Many of them will ask me questions about English grammar. It encourages me to think hard, because as a native speaker I often know the right thing to say, but it is hard for me to figure out why. As a native speaker I don’t even think about why I use the words and when I use them. So, working with the Chinese teachers in the office is a great learning experience for me, too.As I mentioned above, I am here in Shangnan to do an internship as part of my TEFL certification. This is the first time I have ever worked with high school students. In the past, I have worked with little children (mostly under five), so learning to teach at Shangnan High has been a new experience for me.I really enjoy working with older students. When I first came, I was very intimidated. It didn’t take long to realize that my students wer e just as nervous to speak English as I was to teach it! During my first few classes, we were embarrassed together. But, after a while, I became much more confident. My schedule is very different from other teachers. When Samantha and I came to Shangnan, all the senior One and Two students were split between us. This meant that we were each given twenty classes to teach over two weeks. Otherteachers in the school have to prepare a new lesson every day. I have the privilege of teaching the same lesson for two weeks. This means that I have a lot more time to prepare for my classes. I like to prepare lessons that are both interesting and fun to help my students learn the lesson. In my education, I was taught that learning a language takes place more naturally when you are having fun. In addition, I have found that if you are enjoying something, you are more likely to remember it.Sometimes I teach a class in the morning, but I often don’t have to teach until the afternoon. When I’m not preparing my lesson s, there are many other things to do.I am always impressed by the morning exercises. It amazes me how quickly the students line up and how orderly they are doing the exercises. I often like to take a walk up the hill behind the sports field. It has been fun to watch the progress the construction workers are making on the park. I also like to look out over the city and watch the trains. Sometimes, if the weather isn’t too cold, I like to sit in one of the gazebos and read my Bible for a little while. Back in the office, I like to check my e-mail and read some news on the web. I also like to try the crossword puzzle in the China Daily newspaper, or practise a little mandarin. At 11:30 we leave for lunch and lock the office. I buy lunch from one of the restaurants in town. Befor e Samantha’s boyfriend came, she and I would eat lunch together. We often liked to eat rice and vegetables from the shop near the school gate. Sometimes we would eat it in one of our rooms and sometimes we would go to the park. This is still one of my favorite meals. I also have a favorite restaurant for egg noodle soup and another one for dumplings.School begins again at 2:30. One thing I really like about the school is that they play music between classes. This helps to make me feel more cheerful. As I get ready to teach classes I get excited and a little nervous. I love my students. Though they don’t understand me very well, they try really hard and they are learning to be braver in speaking English and to try participating in activities. Most of them are quite shy, but they are eager to learn. As a foreign teacher, it is my job to help my students improve their spoken English. It is admirable that Shagnan High School wants to expose their students tooral English and not just get a high mark on the written exams. I wish I could walk in, wave my magic wand and suddenly all my students could understand English. In fact, I wish someone could do that for me with Chinese! But, the fact is that learning a language is difficult. The best way to speak English is to practice talking out loud with others.Perhaps you remember trying to ride a bike. You could learn all about it, how to sit, how to pedal, just the right angle to hold the handlebars, and how to use the brakes. But do you know anyone who has learned to ride a bike without falling? It is no fun to fall off a bike and scrape our knees, but it is through many such falls and scraped knees that we learn to ride confidently. It is the same with learning English. It doesn’t matter if you don’t get it right. Even if the teacher or your peers correct you, it is not to make you feel like a failure, but with hope that you will continue to try. Maybe 28 tries later you will get it right! I say 28 (so many times ) because we think that once we have made the same mistake three or four times, it is hopeless and we cannot learn. This is not true. Keep on trying! So you know it is good to speak English, but where and with whom? If you have no one to talk to or you are simply too shy, you can try this solution. Most high school students know how to read English letters. Find a quiet place, or a really noisy place where no one will notice you if you speak out loud. Find something to read in English. Practise reading it out loud. Another thing you can try is singing. See if you can find an English song and the written lyrics (words) for it. The lyrics are important; because they will help you realize what the singer is saying, so that you are more likely to sing the words they are singing, and not just what it sounds like to you. Then with your words and your music, have fun and sing along! When you are trying to learn specific English words or phrases ,try using flash cards. Tear some paper up into small rectangles and fold them in half. Write the English on one side and the Chinese on the other. Begin by looking at the English side. Read it aloud, and then try to think of the Chinese meaning. If you get itright ,put it in a pile next to you. If you get it wrong, put it at the back of the pile you are going through. Then go on to the next card in your hand. When you have nomore cards in your hand, go through the pile again and see if you can get them all right. I like to work on only five cards at a time. When I know all five cards, I do five more. When I know the next five cards I go through all ten that I have learned. Then I start on the next five, and when I learn those, I go through all fifteen. This way I get lots of review, but I am only learning a few new cards at a time. After learning to read the English side and think of the Chinese, then turn the cards over and look at the Chinese side and say the English. When you know the words, you can have your friend say them in English and you can try to tell your friend what the words are in Chinese. Then you can have your friend say the words in Chinese and you try to say the English.I think there are lots of ways to learn English. I have found that Americans are trained to learn things differently from Chinese people. What helps an American learn a foreign language, may not help a Chinese person learn English. It is probably best to ask the Chinese English teachers how to best learn English because they have learned it from Chinese themselves. All in all, it has been a pleasure to be in China teaching English. I wish to express my deep gratitude to all the leaders of Shangnan Senior High School. I commend them for the risks and investments they have undertaken to expose the students to foreign English teachers. I admire the hard work and kind hearts of the Chinese students and teachers. Even though I think the students have too much work to do, for too many hours of the day, I think the end result is that they know how to work hard. If they are diligent, once they leave, I think the Students of Shangnan Senior High School will be effective workers with the potential to accomplish great things in this great country.。

In London, to say someone has no sense of humour is to condemn them utterly. The disadvantages are never so apparent as when someone wants to go off to college. Parents have cashed in life insurance policies to cover the cost of one year.My mother knew that she could not send me to college and pay for it. She worked in a retail store and made just enough to pay the bills and take care of the other children at home. If I wanted to go to college,it was up to me to find out how to get there.I found that I qualified for some grants because of the size of our family,my mom“s income and my SAT scores. There was enough to cover school and books, but not enough for room and board. I accepted a job as part of a work-study program. While not glamorous,it was one I could do. I washed dishes in the school cafeteria. To help myself study,I made flash cards that fit perfectly on the large metal dishwasher. After I loaded the racks,I stood there and flipped cards, learning the makeup of atoms while water and steam broke them down all around me. I learned how to make y equal to z while placing dishes in stacks. My wrinkled fingers flipped many a card, and many times my tired brain drifted off,and a glass would crash to the floor. My grades wentup and down. It was the hardest work I had ever done.Just when I thought the bottom was going to drop out of my college career,an angel appeared. Well, one of those that are on earth, without wings.“I heard that you need some help,”he said.“What do you mean?”I asked, trying to figure out which area of my life he meant.“Financially,to stay in school.”“Well,I make it okay. I just have trouble working all these hours and finding time to study.”“Well,I think I have a way to help you out.”He went on to explain that his grandparents needed help on the weekends. All that was required of me was cooking meals and helping them get in and out of bed in the morning and evening. The job paid four hundred dollars a month, twice the money I was making washing dishes. Now I would have time to study. I went to meet his grandparents and accepted the job.My first discovery was his grandmother“s great love of music. She spent hours playing her old,off-key piano. One day,she told me I didn”t have enough fun in my life and 11)took it upon herself to teach me the art.Grandma was impressed with my ability and encouraged me to continue. Weekends in their house became more than just books and cooking;they were filled with the wonderful sounds of the out-of-tune piano and two very out-of-tune singers. When Christmas break came,Grandma got a chest cold, and I was afraid to leave her. I hadn“t been home since Labor Day,and my family was anxious to see me. I agreed to come home, but for two weeks instead of four,so I could return to Grandma and Grandpa. I said my good-byes,arranged for theirtemporary care and return home.As I was loading my car to go back to school, the phone rang.“Daneen, don”t rush back,“he said.“Why?What”s wrong?“I asked, panic rising.“Grandma died last night, and we have decided to put Grandpa in a ret irement home. I”m sorry.“I hung up the phone feeling like my world had ended. I had lost my friend, and that was far worse than knowing I would have to return to dishwashing.I went back at the end of four weeks, asking to begin the work-study program again. The financial aid advisor looked at me as if I had lost my mind. I explained my position, then he smiled and slid me an envelope.“This is for you,”he said.It was from grandma. She had known how sick she was. In the envelope was enough money to pay for the rest of my school year and a request that I take piano lessons in her memory.I don“t think”The Old Grey Mare“was even played with more feeling than it was my second year in college. Now,years later, when I walk by a piano,I smile and think of Grandma. She is tearing up the ivories in heaven,I am sure.Daneen Kaufman Wedekind经典优秀英语美文欣赏篇二Winston Churchill: His Other Life(丘吉尔与绘画)My father,Winston Churchill, began his love affair with painting in his 40s,amid disastrous circumstances. As First Lord of the Admiralty in 1915,he was deeply involved in a campaign in the Dardanelles that could have shortened the course of a bloody world war. But when the mission failed, with great loss of life,Churchill paid the price, both publicly and privately. Hewas removed from the admiralty and effectively sidelined.Overwhelmed by the catastrophe—“I thought he would die of grief,”said his wife,Clementine– he retired with his family to Hoe Farm,a country retreat in Surrey. There,as Churchill later recalled,“The muse of painting came to my rescue!”Wandering in the garden one day,he chanced upon his sister-in-law sketching with watercolors. He watched her for a few minutes, then borrowed her brush and tried his hand. The muse had cast her spell!Churchill soon decided to experiment with oils. Delighted with this distraction from his dark broodings,Clementine rushed off to buy whatever paints she could find. For Churchill, however, the next step seemed difficult as he contemplated with unaccustomed nervousness the blameless whiteness of a new canvas. He started with the sky and later described how“very gingerly I mixed a little blue paint on the palette, and then with infinite precaution made a mark about as big as a bean upon the affronted snow-white shield. At that moment the sound of a motor car was heard in the drive. From this chariot stepped the gifted wife of Sir John Lavery.“‘Painting!’she declared.‘But what are you hesitating about?Let me have the brush–the big one.’Splash into the turpentine, wallop into the blue and the white, frantic flourish on the palette, and then several fierce strokes and slashes of blue on the absolutely cowering canvas. Anyone could see it could not hit back. The spell was broken. I seized the largest brush and fell upon my victim with berserk fury. I have never felt any awe of a canvas since.”At that time,John Lavery– a Churchill neighbor and celebrated painter–was tutoring Churchill in his art. Later,Lavery said of his unusual pupil:“Had he chosen painting instead of statesmanship,I believe he would have been a great master with the brush.”In painting,Churchill had discovered a companion with whom he was to walk for the greater part of the years that remained to him. After the war, painting would offer deep solace when,in 1921,the death of his mother was followed two months later by the loss of his and Clementine‘s beloved three-year-old daughter,Marigold. Battered by grief,Winston took refuge at the home of friends in Scotland, finding comfort in his painting. He wrote to Clementine:“I went out and pa inted a beautiful river in the afternoon light with crimson and golden hills in the background. Many tender thoughts my darling one of you & yr sweet kittens. Alas I kept feeling the hurt of the Duckadilly [Marigold’s pet name].”Life and love and hope slowly revived, and in September 1922 I was born. This was also the year that Winston bought Chartwell, the beloved home he was to paint in all its different aspects for the next 40 years. My father must have felt a glow of gratification when in the mid 1920s he won first prize in a prestigious amateur art exhibition held in London. Entries were anonymous, and some of the judges insisted that Winston‘s picture– one of his first of Chartwell– was the work of a professional, not an amateur, and should be disqualified. In the end, they agreed to rely on the artist’s honesty and were delighted when they learned that the picture had been painted by Churchill.Historians have called the decade after 1929,when the Conservative government fell and Winston was out of office, his wilderness years. Politically he may have been wandering inbarren places,a lonely fighter trying to awaken Britain to the menace of Hitler, but artistically that wilderness bore abundant fruit. During these years he often painted in the south of France. Of the 500-odd canvases extant, roughly 250 date from 1930 to 1939. One,“The Loup River,Alpes Maritimes,”is owned by the Tate Gallery in London. In 1953,during his second prime ministry,my father had a stroke, and I went with him to the south of France where he convalesced. After five days I wrote sadly in my diary:“Papa is wretched. His paints have been untouched.”Once more the muse, and the magical light of the Riviera, came to his rescue. The next day Winston sent a telegram to Clementine:“Have at last plunged into a daub.”Painting remained a joy to Churchill to the end of his life.“Happy are the painters,”he had written in his book Painting as a Pastime,“for they shall not be lonely. Light and color, peace and hope, will keep them company to the end,or almost to the end,of the day.”And so it was for my father.* Mary Soames, fifth child of Winston and Clementine Churchill,is Chairman of Trustees of the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust.Mary Soames经典优秀英语美文欣赏篇三All you remember(你所记得的一切)All you remember about your child being an infant is the incredible awe you felt about the precious miracle you created. 经典语美文欣赏(一)The Rivals in the Life生活中的对手Jaguar is an endangered animal. It is said that there are less than 20 jaguars in the world currently, one of which is now living in the national zoo of Peru. In order to protect this jaguar, Peruvians singled out a pitch of land in the zoo for it, where there are herds of cattle, sheep and deer for the jaguar to eat. Anyone who has visited the zoo praised it to be the "Heaven of Tiger". However, strange enough, no one has ever seen the jaguar prey on the cattle and sheep. What we could see is its lying in its house eating and sleeping.
Some people thought that the jaguar felt toolonely,so they collected money and rented a female tiger to accompany it. Nonetheless, it did not make too much sense. The jaguar just sometimes went out of its house with its "girlfriend" and stayed in the sun for a while before it came back to its house again.一些人认为肯定是美洲虎太孤独了,于是就集资从国外租来一只雌虎陪它生活。

英语美文朗诵欣赏篇1Sometimes I really doubt whether there is love between my parents. Every day they are very busy trying to earn money in order to pay the high tuition for my brother and me. They don’t act in the romantic ways that I read in books or I see on TV. In their opinion, “I love you” is too luxurious for them to say. Sending flowers to each other on Valentin e’s Day is even more out of the question. Finally my father has a bad temper. When he’s very tired from the hard work, it is easy for him to lose his temper.
One day, my mother was sewing a quilt. I silently sat down beside her and looked at her.一天,妈正在缝被子,我静静地坐在她旁边看着她。

And one of them was in a most terrible condition, and I told the sisters: You take care of the other three. I take care of this one who looked worse. So I did for her all that my love can do. I put her in bed, and there was such a beautiful smile on her face. She took hold of my hand as she said just the words "thank you" and she died. I could not help but examine my conscience[良心]before her and I asked what would I say if I was in her place. And my answer was very simple. I would have tried to draw a little attention to myself. I would have said I am hungry, that I am dying, I am cold, I am in pain, or something, but she gave me much more-she gave me her grateful love. And she died with a smile on her face. As did that man whom we picked up from the drain[阴沟、下水道], half eaten with worms, and we brought him to the home. "I have lived like an animal in the street, but I am going to die like an angel, loved and cared for." And it was so wonderful to see the greatness of that man who could speak like that, who could die like that without blaming anybody, without cursing anybody, without comparing anything. Like an angel-this is the greatness of our people. And that is why we believe what Jesus had said: I was hungry, I was naked, I was homeless, I was unwanted, unloved, uncared for, and you did it to me.穷人是非常了不起的人。
