ASmall Ways You Can Donate Money To CharityThere are plenty of innovative ways that you can help people in need, even when money is tight. Here are just a few unique ways to give.Food Angel, Hong KongFood insecurity has become a global problem for families. In Hong Kong, the people behind the Food Angel program collect 45 tonnes of edible surplus food each week that grocery stores, restaurants and individuals would otherwise dispose of. That includes fresh fruits and vegetables and other perishables (易腐烂的食物) that aren’t normally accepted in food-donation boxes. The impact is significant: Volunteers make and serve around 20,000 meals and distribute more than 11,000 other meals and food packs every day.Frigos Solidaires, FranceImagine if those in need could help themselves to food with anonymity (匿名) and dignity. Frigos Solidaires, or Solidarity Fridges, was started with that aim by Dounia Mebtoul, a young restaurateur in Paris. Now, 130 fridges installed in front of places such as shops and schools offer free food to the hungry across France.Stuff A Bus, CanadaIn Edmonton, the transit service parks vehicles in front of supermarkets for its annual “Stuff a Bus” campaign each November. Volunteers collect food and cash donations from shoppers to fill buses bound for food banks. Since its start in 1995, the campaign has collected 553,000 kilograms of food and roughly half a million dollars.Rice Bucket Challenge, IndiaHeard of the Ice Bucket Challenge? You take a video of yourself dumping a bucket of ice water over your head, then nominate (指定) three more people to do the same. In some versions, the participant donates $100 if they don’t complete the challenge.“I thought it was an amazing way to raise awareness of ALS and raise funds,” recall s Manju Kalanidhi, a journalist in Hyderabad, India. But it didn’t make sense in her country, where water is too precious to waste, even for a good cause. Then in 2014, it hit her: Why not make it a Rice Bucket Challenge to fight hunger? “I gave a bucket o f rice to someone in need and clicked a photo. I shared it on Facebook and said, ‘This is a Rice Bucket Challenge. Why don’t you do it, too?’” Participants donate a bucket of rice to an individual or family —no, it’s not dumped — take a photo and post it on social media with a message encouraging others to do the same.1. 事物选择应考虑的因素英语作文

事物选择应考虑的因素英语作文

事物选择应考虑的因素英语作文If you need a master's degree to get a license or certificate, it depends on the working situation. Just like teaching, I believe in social work. As a recruiter, you need to get a degree right away.I have always valued working experience rather than master's night school degree. I found that most of my classmates are experienced professionals who have obtained degrees in this way Many companies have tuition reimbursement plans. If you want to study in your field, you can get tax breaks. There are more opinions about this: experience in countries like Britain, the United States, Canada and other places Often more important than the degree or university education in other countries, degree is more important, experience is secondary, first, people need to have appropriate qualifications (i.e. degree), and then experience is secondary. As others have pointed out, it depends on the job and the organization. In some cases, if a person does not have a degree and in others there are not as many interviews, the employer puts forward more qualifications in the job "requirements" than he or she really needs, especially if a person has a lot ofexperience in a particular field, there is generally no harm in applying one by one People need more educational work, and be sure to emphasize how extensive your experience is and how you can apply it to the interests of your employer. There are some questions that applicants should be prepared to answer: are you willing and able to get the degree you need for money / once? Why do you think a degree is important (or unimportant) why you don't have the degree you need? You think that not having a degree will affect your relationship with other people at work.If the interviewer doesn't ask these questions, both those with a degree and those who don't apply for a degree will want to ask and solve them themselves if you can answer them in a positive way, To allay the interviewer's concerns about your lack of qualifications (if possible), checking with a friend with a degree may also be a good reality check.。

托福阅读TPO 10-2 Variations in the Climate

托福阅读TPO 10-2 Variations in the Climate

Variations in the ClimateOne of the most difficult aspects of deciding whether current climatic events reveal evidence of the impact of human activities is that it is hard to get a measure of what constitutes the natural variability of the climate. We know that over the past millennia the climate has undergone major changes without any significant human intervention. We also know that the global climate system is immensely complicated and that everything is in some way connected, and so the system is capable of fluctuating in unexpected ways. We need therefore to know how much the climate can vary of its own accord in order to interpret with confidence the extent to which recent changes are natural as opposed to being the result of human activities.Instrumental records do not go back far enough to provide us with reliable measurements of global climatic variability on timescales longer than a century. What we do know is that as we include longer time intervals, the record shows increasing evidence of slow swings in climate between different regimes. To build up a better picture of fluctuations appreciably further back in time requires us to use proxy records.Over long periods of time, substances whose physical and chemical properties change with the ambient climate at the time can be deposited in a systematic way to provide a continuous record of changes in those properties overtime, sometimes for hundreds or thousands of years. Generally, the layering occurs on an annual basis, hence the observed changes in the records can be dated. Information on temperature, rainfall, and other aspects of the climate that can be inferred from the systematic changes in properties is usually referred to as proxy data. Proxy temperature records have been reconstructed from ice core drilled out of the central Greenland ice cap, calcite shells embedded in layered lake sediments in Western Europe, ocean floor sediment cores from the tropical Atlantic Ocean, ice cores from Peruvian glaciers, and ice cores from eastern Antarctica. While these records provide broadly consistent indications that temperature variations can occur on a global scale, there are nonetheless some intriguing differences, which suggest that the pattern of temperature variations in regional climates can also differ significantly from each other. What the proxy records make abundantly clear is that there have been significant natural changes in the climate over timescales longer than a few thousand years. Equally striking, however, is the relative stability of the climate in the past 10,000 years (the Holocene period). To the extent that the coverage of the global climate from these records can provide a measure of its true variability, it should at least indicate how all the natural causes of climate change have combined. These include the chaotic fluctuations of the atmosphere, the slower but equally erratic behavior of the oceans, changes in the land surfaces, and the extent of ice and snow. Also included will be any variations that have arisen from volcanic activity, solar activity, and, possibly, human activities. One way to estimate how all the various processes leading to climate variability will combine is by using computer models of the global climate. They can do only so much to represent the full complexity of theglobal climate and hence may give only limited information about natural variability. Studies suggest that to date the variability in computer simulations is considerably smaller than in data obtained from the proxy records. In addition to the internal variability of the global climate system itself, there is the added factor of external influences, such as volcanoes and solar activity. There is a growing body of opinion that both these physical variations have a measurable impact on the climate. Thus we need to be able to include these in our deliberations. Some current analyses conclude that volcanoes and solar activity explain quite a considerable amount of the observed variability in the period from the seventeenth to the early twentieth centuries, but that they cannot be invoked to explain the rapid warming in recent decades.Paragraph 1: One of the most difficult aspects of deciding whether current climatic events reveal evidence of the impact of human activities is that it is hard to get a measure of what constitutes the natural variability of the climate. We know that over the past millennia the climate has undergone major changes without any significant human intervention. We also know that the global climate system is immensely complicated and that everything is in some way connected, and so the system is capable of fluctuating in unexpected ways. We need therefore to know how much the climate can vary of its own accord in order to interpret with confidence the extent to which recent changes are natural as opposed to being the result of human activities.1. According to paragraph 1, which of the following must we find out in order to determine the impact of human activities upon climate?○ The major changes in climate over the past millennia○ The degree to which the climate varies naturally○ The best method for measuring climatic change○ The millennium when humans began to interfere with the climateParagraph 2: Instrumental records do not go back far enough to provide us with reliable measurements of global climatic variability on timescales longer than a century. What we do know is that as we include longer time intervals, the record shows increasing evidence of slow swings in climate between different regimes. To build up a better picture of fluctuations appreciably further back in time requires us to use proxy records.2. According to paragraph 2, an advantage of proxy records over instrumental records is that○ they are more-reliable measures of climatic variability in the past century○ they provide more-accurate measures of local temperatures○ they provide information on climate fluctuations further back in time○ they reveal information about the human impact on the climateParagraph 3:dated. While these records provide broadly consistent indications that temperature variations can occur on a global scale, there are nonetheless some intriguing differences, which suggest that the pattern of temperature variations in regional climates can also differ significantly from each other.of the sentences below best expresses the essential information in theinformation.○ Because physical and chemical properties of substances are unchanging, they are useful records of climate fluctuations over time.○ For hundreds or thousands of years, people have been observing changes in the chemical and physical properties of substances in order to infer climate change.○ Because it takes long periods of time for the climate to change, systematic changes in the properties of substances are difficult to observe.○ Changes in systematically deposited substances that are affected by climate can indicate climate variations over time.4. According to paragraph 3, scientists are able to reconstruct proxy temperature records by○ studying regional differences in temperature variations○ studying and dating changes in the properties of substances○ observing changes in present day climate conditions○ inferring past climate shifts from observations of current climatic changesParagraph 4: What the proxy records make abundantly clear is that there have been significant naturalrelative stability of the climate in the past 10,000 years (the Holocene period).in the passage is closest in meaning to○ noticeable○ confusing○ true○ unlikelyParagraph 3: Over long periods of time, substances whose physical and chemical properties change withchanges in those properties overtime, sometimes for hundreds or thousands of years. Equally striking, however, is the relative stability of the climate in the past 10.000 years (the Holocene period).6. According to paragraphs 3 and 4, proxy data have suggested all of the following about the climate EXCEPT:○ Regional climates may change overtime.○ The climate has changed very little in the past 10,000 years.○ Global temperatures vary more than regional temperatures.○ Important natural changes in climate have occurred over large timescales.Paragraph 5: To the extent that the coverage of the global climate from these records can provide a measure of its true variability, it should at least indicate how all the natural causes of climate change haveof the oceans, changes in the land surfaces, and the extent of ice and snow. Also included will be any variations that have arisen from volcanic activity, solar activity, and, possibly, human activities.7. The in the passage is closest in meaning to○ dramatic○ important○ unpredictable○ common8. All of the following are mentioned in paragraph 5 as natural causes of climate change EXCEPT○ atmospheric changes○ the slow movement of landmasses○ fluctuations in the amount of ice and snow○ changes in ocean activityParagraph 6: One way to estimate how all the various processes leading to climate variability will combine is by using computer models of the global climate. The 99 questions1.What condition is essential for galvanic (bimetallic) corrosion to occur?Oxygen; electrolyte; (two metals having) different potentials2.How do we recognize turbulence corrosion? In copper we can find sharply defined pits which commonly are undercut on the side facing the water’s direction of flow3. When we use the term degraphitation of cast iron, what kind of corrosion do we refer to ? Selective corrosion4. Degraphitation is a special form of bimetallic corrosion and either iron or the steel is consumed through dissolution. Which of the two substances will go to dissolution?Iron (will sacrifice itself for graphite leaving the surface as a layer. This layer has no mechanical strength, however the object looks intact. The graphite may be easily removed with e.g. a knife.5. Most of coatings function by the barrier principal. Against what is the coating barrier? (against) liquid; water and partly oxygen6. Dose a coating heavily pigmented with zinc phosphate provide corrosion protection by the galvanic principle? No, by inhibitor principle7. Why is a surface profile important to adhesion of a coating system? It enlarger the area to contact, providing anchorage8. How do we check surfaces for a metal cleanliness of sa3 ensure that all soluble substances are removed from the surface?According to ISO 8502-6 and ISO 8502-9.Sampling (― Bresle method‖) and measure the conductivity.9. Will blasting steel surface to a metal cleanliness sa3 ensure that all soluble substances are removed from the surface? No, it can only remove partly.Fresh water washing will do it.10. What must be done to the steel surface before grinding?Steel preparation first (removing weld slag/weld spatter, chipping off lamination), thenremoving oil/grease and/or water soluble substances by solvent cleaning and/or HPW washing11. Why is a steel surface, which has been burnished through rotary wire brushing not a verygood surface to apply paint? It is too much smooth, there is no good adhesion between the coating and the surface12. What is the function of a moisture separator on a compressor? To separate water from the compressed air13. What is the effort of increasing the distance from the blast nozzle to the surface? It will loss kinetic energy (shallow roughness/poor blasting)14. Which angle (the blasting nozzle to surface) should you select when blasting off most parts ofthick, which is well adhesion epoxy mastic system?45 to 60 degree angle15. What problem connected to the paint system’s service life can you get if you use an inhibitorin connecting with water jetting?Give later osmotic blistering and affect the adhesion between the paint and the substrate.16. Is water jetting suited for primary surface preparation? If you think so, please state why? Ifyou think not, please state why?No, it is only suited for secondary surface preparation, because it dose not create goodsurface roughness17. If, after blasting, flash rust appears rather more quickly than usual, what could indicate? There is water soluble substance on surface; there is condensation on surface; the humidity is high18. What is the lowers liquid pressure according to the joint SSPC/NACE standard that isdesignated water jetting70 Mpa (10000 psi)19. What is laitance? It is the outer crust of freshly cast concrete.20. Where can you find information such as the pot life of a coating? In the product data sheet.21. When paints are stored for long periods of time, what component settles to the bottom? The pigment will settle to the bottom22. How can you get rid of air that has been mixed into liquid paint before application?Put is a while, the air will release the air by itself in the induction time23. What effects do the temperature has on the pot life of paint? If the temperature increase, the pot life will reduce; if the temperature reduce , the pot life will increase.24. When would you use a moisture/oil trap between an air compressor and the pressure pot in anair spray unit? The moisture / oil trap would be always used when you an air spray unit25. Why dose paint ―wrap around‖ to the sides and the back of an object during electr ostatic sprayapplication? The paint is given an electrostatic charge (usu. negative), the object is earthed, the negative charged paint particles are attracted to all parts of object and the build up of paint is especially good on edges.26. What degree of metal cleanliness is required for thermal spraying of a metallic coating, andwhat should the surface profile be?Sa3 and 50-80 um27. Which metals are the ones most commonly used in thermal spray application?Aluminum alloy and zinc alloy28. What is induction time? Some paints need to sit for a while prior to use in order for the two components to startreacting, this period of time is called induction time29. What effect will hot weather have on the pot life a chemical curing coating?Hot weather will shorten the curing time30. What is a pot life? When the two components paint is mixed, it only has a short period of time between theMixing point and the point at which the paint cured, can not be used anymore , this period of Time is called pot life.31. What is a water borne coating? In a water borne coating the organic solvents are almost absent, and the binder, in form of small spheroids is dispersed in water.32. What effect will low temperature and high humidity have on the drying/curing of water bornecoating? There will be condensation on the coating surface, the coating may not dry/cure33. ―water borne coating dose not contain any solvent at all‖, Is this a correct statementThis is not correct. Water borne coating contain a small amount of special solvent—plasticiser (usu. < 6%)34. Abstract
We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for separability of mixed states. As a result we obtain a simple criterion of separability for 2 × 2 and 2 × 3 systems. Here, the positivity of the partial transposition of a state is necessary and sufficient for its separability. However, it is not the case in general. Some examples of mixtures which demonstrate the utility of the criterion are considered.

– Proof of convergence. This is done as follows. In order to put the MPCG on a sounder theoretical footing we recast the algorithm in a linear algebra setting. The crucial observation is that the filtering procedure proposed in [4] is an orthogonal projection (see, e.g., [10]). This then allows us to relate the MPCG to the usual preconditioned conjugate gradient method applied to a restricted, unconstrained, positive definite system. The established connection then provides a proof of convergence for the MPCG algorithm, as shown in Section 4. – An improvement over the initialization procedure proposed in [4] results from our approach. This is expressed in the choice of initial iterate, as well as in the selection of a convergence criterion. In Section 5 we give a cloth simulation example that demonstrates the potential performance improvements gained. 2 The linear algebra problem Throughout this paper we use boldfaced lowercase roman letters to denote vectors and uppercase roman letters for matrices. Consider the cloth as a bunch of particles in 3D, i.e. each particle i has 3 coordinates qi , i = 1, . . . , N . The equations of motion are assembled, accounting for various forces such as stretching, shearing, bending, gravity, air-drag and damping. The time-dependent differential system is large and stiff. When large time steps are possible (i.e. in the absence of other reasons to make them small) a discretization method with stiff decay [2] is advantageous, at least for the stretching energy term. Baraff & Witkin [4] use the backward Euler method, but only one approximate Newton iteration is applied towards the solution of the resulting nonlinear system of equations. This works when the step size is not too large (it is well-known that Newton’s method is only guaranteed to converge locally, so stability is not entirely unconditional), yet the resulting practical step size restriction is typically much larger than what is possible with explicit time stepping. The resulting semi-implicit time stepping scheme yields a linear system of size n = 3N for the unconstrained problem, Ax = b. (1)

Directions: Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C), and D). You should decide on the best choice. Passage OnePerhaps the most important defining characteristic of a human being is culture. The term culture as used here is not limited to operas, paintings, and other artistic endeavors. These are seen by anthropologists (人类学家) as examples of culture: culture itself is the customary manner in which human groups learn to organize their behavior and thought in relation to their environment. Defined in this manner, culture has three principal aspects: behavioral, perceptual and material. The behavioral component refers to how people act, especially how they interact with each other. In child rearing (养育) , for example, parents and children tend to interact in a relatively patterned fashion. Then there is the manner of perception, the ways people perceive the world. For example, parents have a limited range of ideas about how they should act, and what significance parenthood carries in the scheme of things. Finally, there is the material component of culture — the physical objects that we produce. Most of what goes into making up culture is a result of learning — modifying behavior in response to experience within an environment. Learning is practically universal among organisms. But no other organism has a greater capacity for learning than a human, or depends as much on learned behavior for its survival. While the survival of most other organisms is to some extent safeguarded by instincts, humans rely heavily on culture for their survival. People must learn how to live in a particular social and physical setting, biology playing but a minimal (最小限度的) role. The ideas and modes of behavior that constitute culture are transmitted largely by a complex system of symbols that includes language. Humans have evolved an extremely complex system of communication that is unique to our species. Without it the creation of human culture as we know it would be impossible.1.What is the definition of culture by anthropologists?问题1 答案C) Behavioral, perceptual and material components interacting with each other.B) Customary manners of behavior and thought related to the environment.A) Operas, paintings and may other artistic activities as a whole.D) The different ways people perceive the physical world.问题2 文本问题2 1 分保存2.According to the passage, the behavior of making tools for producing material objects should fall within the category of _________ component of culture.问题2 答案C) materialA) behavioralD) artisticB) perceptual问题3 文本问题3 1 分保存3.Learning is most essential for _________.问题3 答案C) human beings to respond to experience within an environmentB) all the organisms to acquire learned behaviorD) human beings to survive and live in a societyA) all the organisms to survive问题4 文本问题4 1 分保存4. Now, that valuable space is an intimate luxury hotel — with several rooms overlooking the ocean. You’ll be amazed when you enter from the corner and ascend the curving staircase to the second-floor lobby. It will take you into a different world. What will you find when you enter the large contemporary lobby is a handsome and peaceful space that was designed with a hint of Tuscany in its modern Mediterranean (地中海式的) style. The lobby has a large fireplace with comfortable sofas in warm neutral colors surrounding it. You’ll feel relaxed just sitting there — with its skylight overhead letting in the morning sun.All the rooms are more like suites (套房), with large comfortable beds, beautiful baths and stylish custom-designed furnishings and art throughout. The Parisi Hotel is the perfect place for seniors because it’s quiet and restful — with only 20 rooms. You won’t find many hotels like this in the center of a tourist town. The shops are all around you. Likewise for some of the city’s best restaurants, you will never have to take your car out of the garage during your stay. And, by the way, the underground parking lotat the Parisi Hotel is free for hotel guests.Once you stay at this little gem (珍品), you’ll want to return again and again. I know we do. It’s a perfect place for seniors.Rates for standard suites begin at $275. You can call the hotel for reservation at (858) 454-1513. I was alone, quite ill and had to delay my flight home. Luckily, when booking my ticket months before, I had bought travel insurance. So my illness didn’t cost me a cent. It’s actually pretty simple. A lot of unforeseen things can happen to you when you’re traveling. Make sure you’re prepared for all of them.A good health insurance policy will get you proper medical attention anywhere in the world outside your home province — at the insurance company’s expense. The company will send you home if it is considered medically necessary and, if you’re sick enough, it will send a nurse to accompany you. If you end up in a hospital and a doctor recommends that a family member come to your bedside, the insurance company will pay for it. You may even get pocket money to make your hospital stay more comfortable. When I was sick in Bombay, I called the insurance company collect. It paid for a doctor (who came to my hotel room), all my medication, an extra night in the hotel and all my meals.Picture it: the day before your big trip to Vancouver, you wake up with appendicitis (阑尾炎). You have no choice —you have to cancel your trip. Your ticket, like most, is non-refundable and you can’t make any changes. You’re about to lose all the money you put out for the ticket — unless you bought cancellation insurance beforehand. Most travel plans include some form of non-refundable element: your deposit, your flights, your cruise, your stay at the all-inclusive resort. That non-refundable portion is what you’ll lose if you have to cancel your trip in the event that you get sick and you don’t have cancellation insurance.1. Behaviorists, who study the relation between actions and their consequences, argue that rewards can improve performance at work and school. Cognitive (认知学派的) researchers, who study various aspects of mental life, maintain that rewards often destroy creativity by encouraging dependence on approval and gifts from others. The latter view has gained many supporters, especially among educators. But the careful use of small monetary (金钱的) rewards sparks creativity in grade school children, suggesting that properly presented inducements (刺激) indeed aid inventiveness, according to a study in the June Journal of Personality and Social Psychology."If kids know they’re working for a reward and can focus on a relatively challenging task, they show the most creativity, " says Robert Eisenberger of the University of Delaware in Neward. " But it’s easy to kill creativity by giving rewards for poor performance or creating too much anticipation for rewards. "A teacher who continually draws attention to rewards or who hands out high grades for ordinary achievement ends up with uninspired students, Eisenberger holds. As an example of the latter point, he notes growing efforts at major universities to tighten grading standards and restore failing grades. In earlier grades, the use of so-called token economies, in which students handle challenging problems and receive rewards, shows promise in raising effort and creativity, the Delaware psychologist claims.1.Psychologists are divided with regard to their attitudes toward____问题1 答案C. the study of relationship between actions and their consequencesD. the effects of external rewards on students performanceB. the amount of monetary rewards for student creativityA. the choice between spiritual encouragement and monetary rewards问题2 文本问题2 1 分保存2.What is the response of many educators to external rewards for their students?问题2 答案C. This radical physical transformation provided mammals with a greater tolerance for external temperature and required reliance on specialized food types. When the dominant dinosaurs(恐龙)became extinct, the Age of Mammals began. For the rest 60 million years mammals expanded into the biological vacuum which they were better equipped to exploit than all but a few varieties of reptiles. The habitat of life forms on earth has been the entire planet, conveniently dividing the world into the birds of the air, the fish of the sea, and the creatures of the land. The evolutionary process also created sea-dwelling mammals who appeared to reverse the process of evolution as they returned to the sea. The whales’ limbs became flipperlike, and they lost the hair on their bodies, suiting them better to aquatic life.On the other hand, in the course of the evolution of birds from reptiles, there was a succession of changes in the bone, muscle, and skin structures of the animals. This wholesale restructuring of some reptiles over a period of thousands of years equipped the new animals to escape their predators and to find food more easily. But the evolutionary process did not stop there. Once adapted to flight, some birds continued to change and the process seemed to reverse itself. As penguins(企鹅)adapted to marine life, their wings changed to flippers and their feathers to a waterproof covering, thus suiting the birds for a semi-aquatic existence.1.The Age of Mammals began when ____问题1 答案A. animals evolved from reptilesD. the dominant dinosaurs died outC. animals were more tolerant to external temperatureB. animals nursed the young问题2 文本问题2 1 分保存2.It can be concluded from this passage that the ancestors of whales ___问题2 答案D. had too many offspringA. were fishC. lived on the landB. chased reptiles问题3 文本问题3 1 分保存3. The Disappearance of Reptiles. The temperature of the Sun is over 5,000 degrees Fahrenheit at the surface, but it rises to perhaps more than 16 million degrees at the center. The Sun is so much hotter than the Earth that matter can exist only as a gas, except at the core. In the core of the Sun, the pressures are so great against the gases that, despite the high temperature, there may be a small solid core. However, no one really knows, since the center of the Sun can never be directly observed.Solar astronomers do know that the Sun is divided into five layers or zones. Starting at the outside and going down into the Sun, the zones are the corona, chromospheres, photosphere, convection zone, and finally the core. The first three zones are regarded as the Sun’s atmosphere. But since the Sun has no solid surface, it is hard to tell where the atmosphere ends and the main body of the Sun begins. The Sun’s outermost layer begins about 10,000 miles above the visible surface and goes outward for millions of miles. This is the only part of the Sun that can be seen during an eclipse such as the one in February 1979. At any other time, the corona can be seen only when special instruments are used on cameras and telescopes to keep out the glare of the Sun’s rays. The corona is a brilliant, pearly white, filmy light, about as bright as the full Moon. Its beautiful rays are a sensational sight during an eclipse. The corona’s rays flash out in a brilliant fan that has wispy spike like rays near the Sun’s north and south poles. The corona is thickest at the Sun’s equator. The corona rays are made up of gases streaming outward at tremendous speeds and reaching a temperature of more than 2 million degrees Fahrenheit. The rays of gas thin out as they reach the space around the planets. By the time the Sun’s corona rays reach the Earth, they are weak and invisible.1. Scientists have puzzled over this question for many years. Now they’re beginning to fill in the blanks. Not long ago, experiments showed that birds rely on the sun to guide them during daylight hours. But what about birds that mainly fly by night? Tests with artificial stars have proved that certain night-flying birds are able to follow the stars in their long-distance flights. One such bird –a warbler (刺嘴莺) –had spent its lifetime in a cage and had never flown under a natural sky at migration time. Yet it showed an inborn ability to use the stars for guidance. The bird’s cage was placed under an artificial star-filled sky. The bird tried to fly in the same direction as that taken by his outdoor cousins. Any change in the position of the make-belief stars caused a change in the direction of his flight.Scientists think that warblers, when flying in daylight, use the sun for guidance. But the stars are apparently their principal means of navigation. When the stars are hidden by clouds, they apparently find their way by such landmarks as mountain ranges, coast lines, and river courses. But when it’s too dark to see these, the warblers circle helplessly, unable to get their bearings (方向感).1. Of the 2,500 National Health Service hospitals in Britain, almost 100 now have significant collections of contemporary art in corridors, waiting areas and treatment rooms. These recent initiatives owe a great deal to one artist, Peter Senior, who set up his studio at a Manchester hospital in northeastern England during the early 1970s. He felt the artist had lost his place in modern society, and that art should be enjoyed by a wider audience.A typical hospital waiting room might have as many as 500 visitors each week. What better place to hold regular exhibitions of art? Senior held the first exhibition of his own paintings in the out-patients waiting area of the Manchester Royal Hospital in 1975. Believed to be Britain's first hospital artist, Senior was so much in demand that he was soon joined by a team of six young art school graduates. The effect is striking. Now in the corridors and waiting rooms the visitor experiences a full view of fresh colors, playful images and restful courtyards. The quality of the environment may reduce the need for expensive drugs when a patient isrecovering from an illness. A study has shown that patients who had a view onto a garden needed half the number of strong pain killers compared with patients who had no view at all or only a brick wall to look at.1. ICI, the chemicals and plastics company, believes that it is now beginning to break the grip of glass onthe bottle business and thus take advantage of this huge market. All the plastics manufacturers have been experiencing hard times as their traditional products have been doing badly world-wide for the last few years. Between 1982 and 1984 the Plastics Division of ICI had lost a hundred and twenty million dollars, and they felt that the. most hopeful new market was in packaging, bottles and cans.Since 1982 it has opened three new factories producing "Melinar", the raw material from which high quality polyester bottles are made. The polyester bottle was born in the 1970s, when soft drinks companies like Coca Cola started selling their drinks in giant two-liter containers. Because of the build-up of the pressure of gas in these large containers, glass was unsuitable. Nor was PVC, the plastic which had been used for bottles since the 1960s, suitable for drinks with gas in them. A new plastic had to be made. Glass is still cheaper for the smaller bottles, and will continue to be so unless oil and plastic become much cheaper, but plastic does well for the larger sizes.Polyester bottles are virtually unbreakable. The manufacturers claim they are also lighter, less noisy when being handled, and can be reused. Shopkeepers and other business people are unlikely to object to a change from glass to polyester, since these bottles mean few breakages, which are costly and time-consuming. The public, though, have been more difficult to persuade. ICI's commercial department is developing different bottles with interesting shapes, to try and make them visually more attractive to the public. The next step could be to develop a plastic which could replace tins for food. The problem here is the high temperatures necessary for cooking the food in the container.1. In the fermentationfield, this initiative could be an effective way for a fast dissemination of the growing number of researches related with the biotechnological production of different value added products. The OMICS offers various features including digital articles, audio listening, language translation and social networking (Face book, Twitter, Linked in, RSS Feeds), which allow the virtual communication and the rapid information exchange between worldwide researchers. This information is very useful for many academic readers and researchers, who develop their work to improve existing fermentation procedures or to design new reproducible processes with potential industrial implementation. To contribute with this development, the articles dealing with fermentation processes and submitted for publication in any Open accessjournal (e.g. Fermentation Technology) must be well written with a clear language without ambiguities, and with an adequate presentation, accurate analyses and complete discussion of the data. This improves the quality of the published scientific papers and enables their better understanding. For these reasons, the present editorial attempts to provide a general guide to present, analyse and interpret correctly the results obtained in fermentation processes, which may be useful for students and researchers that publish research articles in this field.Presentation of Experimental Data and Statistical Analysis of the ResultsComparison of dataThe statistical methods used to compare data (e.g. means concentrations of biomass and products) must be clearly and completely described in the “Materials and Methods” section. Information about the number of replicates and runs (repetitions) made in each analytical determinations must also be provided. Data may be presented in tables as means with their standard deviations (SD) in parenthesis beside them. In addition, the results of the statistical analysis (e.g. comparison of means) with the corresponding signification level must be presented with the data in the tables.Studies on the effects of key factors on response variablesThe effects of independent factors (e.g. initiallevel of pH, nutrients, temperature) on different response variables (e.g. biomass formation or product synthesis) could be preferably carried out by using factorial designs rather than using “one variable at a time” method. The latter method is time consuming and could lead to an incomplete interpretation of the behaviour of the system, resulting in lack of predictive ability, mainly when there are interactions between the independent factors. In contrast, the use of factorial designs allows to reduce the number of experiments and to obtain empirical mathematical models describing the effect of each independent factor (both linear and quadratic) and their interactions on the response variables. The analysis of variance of the empirical models obtained and the value of the regression coefficient must be presented in a table. The statistically significant coefficients of the independent variables andtheir interactions (as values ± standard errors) and the significance level (commonly P < 0.05) used must also be indicated in a table. After obtaining the optimal values for the independent factors that maximize the levels of the response variables, a verification of the predicted results in the optimal conditions must be carried out in duplicate or triplicate incubation experiments. However, it could be taken into account that the results obtained from complete factorial designs with more than three factors could be of difficult interpretation when the number of significant coefficients for the factors and their interactions are high [1].Modelling the time course of kinetic variablesThe time course of key variables in a fermentationprocess must be clearly presented in graphics, with distinguishable symbols representing the mean values of the variable with the corresponding error bars on each graphed experimental point. In addition, the number of replicates and runs must also be clearly indicated in the figure caption. The experimental data collected in a dynamic process like microbial growth of metabolite production at different sampling times are a set of discrete points and they must be shown in the figures as single points that should not be connected with a straight line [2]. This is because these points have some experimental error in them that could describe an erratic behaviour in the dynamic of the data. In these cases, a mathematical model should be used to smooth the experimental data and describe the trendobserved in them. The predictions of the model are continuous and must be plotted as continuous lines. With this approach, the values of different parameters (e.g. the rates, efficiencies or yields) can be reasonably calculated from the predicted values of some measured variables (concentrations of nutrients and products). The most common criterion used to evaluate the goodness of fit of a mathematical model to data is the coefficient of determination (R2). However, when a set of models are compared, the use of this coefficient is not always sufficient to determine which model produces the best fit. In these cases, it is convenient to use other criteria such as the values of the sum of the squared errors (SSE), the mean relative percentage deviation modulus (RPDM) and the standard error of estimate (SEE) of each model to judge best fit[3].After performing an accurate and complete analysis of the results and extracting the appropriate supported conclusions, the results obtained must be compared with those obtained by other researchers in similar studies. In this case, speculative interpretations of the results and/or the abusive use of references to increase the length of the article should be avoided.Well-presented research articles submitted to Fermentation Technology will improve the scientific quality of this Journal.ReferencesRobinson PH, Wiseman J, Udén P, Mateos GG(2006) Some experimental design and statistical criteria for analysis of studies in manuscripts submitted for consideration for publication.
