Martin Luther King was a black minister, who became a great leader of the civil rights movement in the 1950s and 1960s. King was born on January 15, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia. When he was young, he was strongly influenced by Thoreau and Indian leader Mahatma Gandhi's idea of non-violent resistance. Having received a Ph. D (Doctor of Philosophy) from Boston University, he became a political and religious leader of the non-violent civil relights movement in 1955. On August 28, 1963, he led over 250,000 Americans on a march in Washington D.C. to fight for the Civil Rights Law to guarantee equality for all people, and delivered his best known speech "I Have a Dream" before the Lincoln Memorial. The "dream" is a dream of brotherly love and equality for the Black and White. Thus, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for peace in 1964, but he was murdered four years later. Though he died, he was greatly respected and loved by the Americans, both the white and the black. By vote of Congress in 1968, the third Monday of every January is now a federal holiday in Luther King's honor. He lives in people's hearts forever. (15分)

Many restaurants put up their menus on the window, and you are not sure about how expensive the place is, ask to see a menu before you sit down at a table, or just ask about the price. Appearances from the outside can be misleading--- what looks like a smell, informal restaurant may really be very expensive, and what looks like a large, expensive restaurant may be very reasonable. You can get a meal for about $4 or $5 or a little more if you eat in a snack bar of coffee shop, but in most city restaurants you should expect to pay $8 to $10 a person for dinner, with alcoholic drinks and wine extra. So it makes sense that the elderly should be routinely screened for new tumors —or doesn’t it?While such vigilant(警觉的)tracking of cancer is a good thing in general, researchers are increasingly questioning whether all of this testing is necessary for the elderly. With the percentage of people over age 65 expected to nearly double by 2050, it’s important to weigh the health benefits of screening against the risks and costs of routine testing. In many cases, screening can lead to additional biopsies and surgeries to remove cancer, which can cause side effects, while the cancers themselves may be slow-growing and may not pose serious health problems in patients’ remaining years. But the message that everyone must screen for cancer has become so ingrained that when health care experts recommended that women under 50 and over 74 stop screening for breast cancer, it caused a riotous reaction among doctors, patients and advocacy groups. It’s hard to uproot deeply held beliefs about cancer screening with scientific data. Certainly, there are people over age 75 who have had cancers detected by routine screening, and gained several extra years of life because of treatment. And clearly, people over age 75 who have other risk factors for cancer, such as a family history or prior personal experience with the disease, should continue to get screened regularly. But for the remainder, the risk of cancer, while increased at the end of life, must be balanced with other factors like remaining life expectancy(预期寿命).A recent study suggests that doctors start to make more objective decisions about who will truly benefit from screening- especially considering the explosion of the elderly that will soon swell our population. It’s not an easy calculation to make, but one that make sense for the whole patie nt. Dr. Otis Brawley said, “Many doctors are ordering these tests purely to cover themselves. We need to think about the rational use of health care and stop talking about the rationing of health care.” That means making some difficult decisions with elderly patients, and going against the misguided belief that when it comes to health care, more is always better.121.Why do doctors recommend routine cancer screening for elderly people?()A. It is believed to contribute to long life.B. It is part of their health care package.C. The elderly are more sensitive about their health.D. The elderly are in greater danger of tumor growth.答案: D2.How do some researchers now look at routine cancer screening for the elderly?()A. It adds too much to their medical bills.B. It helps increase their life expectancy.C. They are doubtful about necessity.D. They think it does more than good.答案: C3.What is the conventional view about women screening for breast cancer?()A. It applies to women over 50.B. It is a must for adult women.C. It is optional for young women.D. It doesn’t apply to women over 74.答案: B4.Why do many doctors prescribe routine screening for cancer?()A. They want to protect themselves against medical disputes.B. They want to take advantage of the medical care system.C. They want data for medical research.D. They want their patients to suffer less.答案: A5.What does the author say is the general view about health care? ()A. The more, the better.B. Prevention is better than cure.C. Researchers believe this may be caused by social pressure. In a New York Times article, Sam Boakye – the only black student on his freshman year floor -said that "if you're surrounded by whites, you have something to prove."Researchers also observed problems resulting from pairing interracial students in residences. According to two recent studies, randomly assigned roommates of different races are more likely to experience conflicts so strained that one roommate will move out. An Indiana University study found that interracial roommates were three times as likely as two white roommates to no longer live together by the end of the semester. Grace Kao, a professor at Penn said she was not surprised by the findings. "This may be the first time that some of these students have interacted, and lived, with someone of a different race," she said. At Penn, students are not asked to indicate race when applying for housing. "One of the great things about freshman housing is that, with some exceptions, the process throws you together randomly," said Undergraduate Assembly chairman Alec Webley. "This is the definition of integration." "I've experienced roommate conflicts between interracial students that have both broken down stereotypes and reinforced stereotypes," said one Penn resident advisor (RA). The RA of two years added that while some conflicts "provided more multicultural acceptance and melding (融合)," there were also "jarring cultural confrontations." The RA said that these conflicts have also occurred among roommates of the same race. Kao said she cautions against forming any generalizations based on any one of the studies, noting that more background characteristics of the students need to be studied and explained.1.What can we learn from some recent studies? ()A. Conflicts between students of different races are unavoidable.B. Students of different races are prejudiced against each other.C. Interracial lodging does more harm than good.D. Interracial lodging may have diverse outcomes.答案: D2.What does Sam Boakye's remark mean? ()14A. White students tend to look down upon their black peers.B. Black students can compete with their white peers academically.C. Black students feel somewhat embarrassed among white peers during the freshman year.D. Being surrounded by white peers motivates a black student to work harder to succeed.答案: D3.What does the Indiana University study show? ()A. Interracial roommates are more likely to fall out.B. Few white students like sharing a room with a black peer.C. Roommates of different races just don't get along.D. Assigning students' lodging randomly is not a good policy.答案: A4.What does Alec Webley consider to be the "definition of integration"? ()A. Students of different races are required to share a room.B. Interracial lodging is arranged by the school for freshmen.C. Lodging is assigned to students of different races without exception.D. The school randomly assigns roommates without regard to race.答案: D5.What does Grace Kao say about interracial lodging? ()A. It is unscientific to make generalizations about it without further study.B. Schools should be cautious when making decisions about student lodging.C. Students' racial background should be considered before lodging is assigned.D. But that kind of life is not for Ethell Pepper. "I just wanted to do something different. If you are going to participate in life, do it. Don't just sit down and look out of the window." She says. At 68, she decided to become one of the pioneer participants in a program at the University of California. The program offers campus housing and classes to people over sixty. She enrolled in a class called Human Relationships and a Diverse Society. "I taught my minority students in my English and drama classes in high school for 20 years. But in this course, I found out a lot about other cultures that I didn't know then. One of the more important lessons that I'm learning is to perceive, not to judge." Older adults can add to the educational resources of university by bringing with them a lot of valuable experience. Their presence on campus helps break some long believes on aging. Youngstudents may have fears of growing older. But that kind of fear can be reduced as they see that older people can be active, healthy, and continue to contribute to society. The younger students can begin to see aging as a natural part of living.(15分)6).Ethell entered university when she was 68.(3分)(A)T (B) F参考答案:A7).Ethell has been teaching minority students for 20 years.(3分)(A)T (B) F参考答案:A8).Ethell enjoyed staying with young people.(3分)(A)T (B) F参考答案:B9).Elderly people bring a great deal of useful experience to the university.(3分)(A)T (B) F参考答案:A10).Ethell is learning how to teach minority students.(3分)(A)T (B) F参考答案:BShyness is the cause of much unhappiness for a great many people. Shy people are anxious and self-conscious; that is, they are excessively concerned with their own appearance and actions. Worrisome thoughts are constantly occurring in their minds: what kind of impression am I making? Do they like me? Do I sound stupid? Am I wearing unattractive clothes? It is obvious that such uncomfortable feelings must negatively affect people. A person's conception of himself or herself is reflected in the way he or she behaves, and the way a person behaves affects other people's reactions. In general, the way people think about themselves has a profound effect on all areas of their lives.Shy people, having low self-esteem, are likely to be passive and easily influenced by others. They need reassurance that they are doing "the right thing." Shy people are very sensitive to criticism; they feel it confirms their feelings of inferiority. They also find it difficult to be pleased by compliment with a statement like this one, "You're just saying that to make me feel good. I know it's not true." It is clear that while self-awareness is a healthy quality, overdoing it is harmful. Can shyness be completely eliminated, or at least reduced? Fortunately, people can overcome shyness with determined and patient efforts in building self-confidence. Since shyness goes hand in hand with a lack of self-esteem, it is important for people to accept their weaknesses as well as their strengths. Each one of us is a unique, worthwhile individual, interested in our own personal ways. The better we understand ourselves, the easier it becomes to live up to our full potential. Let's not allow shyness to block our chances for a rich and fulfilling life. If you are invited to a Yuppie dinner party, don’t be surprised if you are offered freshly cooked insects as a first course. While the idea of eating fried insects fills most of us with horror, insect eating is becoming highly fashionable. For example, in the media industry, successful managers are often seen to eat fried or boiled insects from time to time while working at their desks. These safe-to-eat insects can be found and ordered on the Internet. And young people are logging on to foreign food websites and ordering samples of prepared insects to serve at their dinner parties. Although the idea of eating insects is probably disgusting to most of us, few people would claim that pigs, chickens and some kinds of seafood we often eat are examples of great beauty. One day, insects would be marketed and sold as a food item in supermarkets. According to their fans of Yuppies, they are not only healthy, but also very tasty. We don’t know if either story is true, but they are both interesting. The first explanation is based on the fact that President Jackson had very little education. In fact, he had difficulty reading and writing. When important papers came to Jackson, he tried to read them and then had his assistants explain what they said. If he approved of a paper, he would write “all correct” on it. The problem was that he didn’t know how to spell, so what he really wrote was “ol korekt”. After a while, he shortened that term to “OK”.The second explanation is based on the place where President V an Buren was born, Kinderhook, New York. V an Buren’s friends organized a club to help him become President. They called the club the Old Kinderhook Club, and anyone who supported V an Buren was called “OK”.(25分)16). . All my friends in middle school went to other schools. I wanted to make some new friends. However, I was shy and wasn’t good at making new friends. On my first day at school, I looked at others who were walking in groups happily. How I wish I were one of them! I guess I was very lucky then. At lunch in the dining hall, when I was eating at a table alone, a girl came to me. “Excuse me, is this seat taken?” she asked. I immediately shook my head. She smiled and sat down opposite to me. I felt a little awkward anddidn’t know what to say at all, but I really wanted to communicate with her. It was a good chance to make friends with her. When I looked up, I found she was smiling at me. Her smile calmed me down. “I really like this school. It’s beautiful, but I don’t know anyone here. All my friends went to other schools,” said the girl. Hearing her words, I immediately said, “My friends are not here, either. Can we be friends?” I was surprised. I couldn’t believe I would say something like that, and to my surprise, that girl immediately said “Yes”. We both smiled. We became very good friends. Now it’s the beginning of a new term again. Whenever he got a chance, he would ask his dog to amuse his friends with some tricks. One day Ramon went to visit his friend Frank who was sick at home with a bad cold. "How are you feeling?" asked Ramon. "Worse than yesterday," replied Frank. "I have a terrible cough, and there's not a drop of medicine in the house.""Cheer up, Frank. I'll send Blackie to the local drugstore for some cough syrup (糖浆). He'll be back in a minute, before you know it." Ramon put a five-dollar bill in Blackie's mouth and the dog ran down the street. "And keep the change," Ramon shouted after him."Oh, Ramon, don't be silly. You know that dog won't be back with any medicine." "Oh yes, he will," replied Ramon. Half an hour later, however, Blackie had not returned. Ramon was feeling embarrassed, and felt angry at his friend's little smile."Something has happened to him, I'm sure," said Ramon. "He obeys me as a rule." Just then Frank saw Blackie at a distance. He hurried to open the door and let him in. Frank wasshocked to see a bottle of medicine in the dog's mouth."Good boy," said Ramon, "but what took you so long?" Blackie ran over to the window, barking and wagging (摆动) his tail. (3分)(A)T (B) F参考答案:AIn the United States, it is not customary to telephone someone very early in the morning. If you telephone him early in the day, while he is shaving or having breakfast, the time of the call shows that the matter is very important and requires immediate attention. The same meaning is attached to telephone calls made after 11:00 pm. If someone receives a call during sleeping hours, he assumes it's a matter of life or death. The time chosen for the call communicates its importance. In social life, time plays a very important part. In the U.S.A. guests tend to feel they are not highly regarded if the invitation to a dinner party is extended only three or four days before the party date. But it is not true in all countries. In other areas of the world, it may be considered foolish to make an appointment too far in advance because plans which are made for a date more than a week away tend to be forgotten. The meaning of time differs in different parts of the world. Thus, misunderstandings arise between people from different cultures that treat time differently. Promptness is valued highly in American life, for example. If people are not prompt, they may be regarded as impolite or not fully responsible. In the U.S. no one would think of keeping a business associate waiting for an hour, it would be too impolite. A person, who is 5 minutes late, will say a few words of explanation, though perhaps he will not complete the sentence. (15分)11).What is the main idea of this passage?
