You might take a car, a bus, or a bike to school. But in Bangladesh, instead of waiting for a school bus to come down their street, many students wait for a school boat to come down the river. That’s right—these students attend school on a boat!

Bangladesh is very close to sea level.______1______ The flooding creates many problems. For the nearly 160 million people living there, the periodic flooding means that they are often unable to access roads, electricity, or telephones.

Growing up in Bangladesh, Mohammed Rezwan was often troubled by these disruptions(破坏). ______2_____ The name means “self-reliance (自力更生).” The purpose of the organization is to help the people of Bangladesh receive an education and also to bring technology and an improved quality of life to poor people in remote areas of the country. In 2002, Rezwan began transforming boats into schools. Each boat was built to house between 30 and 35 students. The boats had everything you might find in a regular classroom. The only difference was that they floated on a river.

______3______ Today Rezwan and his organization operate 88 boats in northern Bangladesh. About half the boats are used as schools, and the other half are used as temporary houses during the flood season. In addition to the schools and the temporary housing, there are also a floating technology and training center, a library that allows students to check out books, and a health-care center. The school boats travel along the rivers and pick up students for classes that include computer technology, agriculture, and human rights.

At night the boats provide additional learning opportunities for students and adults. ______4______ They study using solar lamps that are charged during the day at stations near the river. Special equipment on the boats also projects lessons onto big screens made from sail cloth. People can come down to the river bank to watch films. In all, these boats help educate close to 90,000 families in Bangladesh.

By floating down the rivers, the school boats provide more than books. ______5______ “This ‘library’ boat inspired me,” said 18-year-old student Shanto Islam, who enjoys reading science fiction books. “I started to dream.” Islam now wants to attend a university.

The Winner's Guide to Success

Do you know what makes people successful? To find out the answers, an American reporter recently visited some of the most successful people around the world. 1

Be responsible for yourself.

Sometimes you may want to blame others for your failure to get ahead. In fact, when you say someone or something apart from yourself is stopping you from making success, you're giving away your own power. 2

Write a plan.

It is very difficult to try to get what you want without a good plan. It is just like trying to drive through strange roads- to a city far away. 3 Without this "map", you may waste your time, money and also your energy; while with the "map", you'll enjoy the "trip" and get what you want in the shortest possible time.

4

Nothing great is easy to get. So you must be ready to work hard—even harder than you have ever done. If you are not willing to pay the price, you won't get anything valuable.

Never give up.

5 When you are doing something, you must tell yourself again and again: Giving up is worse than failure because failure can be the mother of success, but giving up means the death of hope.

A. A good plan is like a map to you.

B. It seems to us that everyone knows this, but it is easier said than done.

C. Some people achieve success much later in life because they didn't work hard earlier.

D. You're saying, "You have more control over my life than I do."

E. Someone else's opinion of you doesn't have to become your reality.

F. Be willing to pay the price.

G. Here are some keys to success that they give.

Never Too Late to Change Your Life

It isn’t too late for you to improve something in your life that you really want to change. No matter what age you are at and no matter where you are right now. Start there. 1 From that small change and success you will gain confidence and you can build upon that to make more and perhaps even bigger changes. Four steps will make it easier for you to get started

_2 Maybe you already know it. It could be your social life, your health or money situation. Take time to focus on this because if you really want something then it becomes a lot easier to keep going.

Choose one thing or habit to focus on for now. If you have found several things or habits you would like to focus on, then choose to focus on just one at a time. 3 You’ll probably not have the time and energy to change three things at once even though you really hope and think you can.

Take small steps. This is very important. The feeling that something is too big or difficult is one of the most common things to hold people back from taking action. 4 The plan sounds so good in your head. But when you carry it out then you can’t really take much action or move as fast as you thought.

5 Don’t get stuck in planning. Or think that you will get started tomorrow or next week. Get the ball rolling instead. Do that today by just taking one small and practical step towards what you want.

A. Why am I telling you this?

B. Make a small change if possible.

C. Think about what you really want to change.

D. You can do what you can with what you have right now.

E. On the other hand, people also tend to think highly of their own power.

F. Ask yourself: what is one small step I can take right now to get the ball rolling?

G. Spreading yourself too much always leads to failure because life tends to get in the way.

Anger can benefit relationships.

Society tells us anger is dangerous and we should hide it .The problem is that when we hide our anger, our partner doesn't know he's done something wrong. And so he keeps doing it. 4 The expression of anger, if reasonable and aimed at finding a solution, can actually benefit and strengthen relationships.

Anger provides self-understanding.

Anger can also provide understanding into ourselves, if we allow it. Getting angry leads to a positive outcome. Anger help discover our own faults. If we can notice when we get angry and why, then we can learn what to do to improve our lives. 5

Public Speaking and Critical Thinking

What is critical thinking? To a certain degree, it’s a matter of logic (逻辑)—of being able to spot weaknesses in other people’s arguments and to avoid them in your own. It also includes related skills such as distinguishing fact from opinion and assessing the soundness of evidence.

In the broad sense, critical thinking is focused, organized thinking—the ability to see clearly the relationships among ideas. 1 __The greatest thinkers, scientists, and inventors have often taken information that was readily available and put it together differently to produce new ideas. That, too, is critical thinking.

2 ___ As the class goes on, for example, you will probably spend a good deal of time organizing your speeches. While this may seem like a purely mechanical (机械的) exercise, it is closely connected with critical thinking. Of the structure (结构) of your speech is loose and confused, chances are that your thinking is also disordered and confused. If, on the other hand, the structure is clear, there is a good chance your thinking is too. Organizing a speech is not just a matter of arranging the ideas you already have.

3 __

What is true of organization is true of many aspects of public speaking. 4 __. As you work on expressing your ideas in clear, accurate language, you will improve your ability to think clearly and accurately. 5 .As you learn to listen critically to speeches in class, you will be better able to assess the ideas of speakers in a variety of situations.

If you take full advantage of your speech class, you will be able to develop your skills as a critical thinker in many circumstances. This is one reason public speaking has been regarded as a vital part of education since the days of ancient Greece.

A. Rather, it is an important part of shaping the ideas themselves.

B. This may seem like a lot of time, but the rewards are well worth it.

C. It may also help you to know that there is no such thing as a perfect speech.

D. It has often been said that there are few new ideas in the world, only reorganized ideas.

E. If you are wondering what this has to do with your public speaking class, the answer is quite a lot.

F. The skills you learn in your speech class can help you become a more effective thinker in a number of ways.

G. As you study the role of evidence and reasoning in speech-making, you will see how they can be used in other forms of communication as well.

Get a great grasp

Try this---hold your pencil at the top and try to write your name. Pretty hard? But when you hold your pencil the correct way, writing is much easier. 2 Hold it in place with your thumb(拇指), and your index(食指) and middle fingers.

Let the lines be your guide

Lined paper is your friend! Those lines can help you create letters that are the right size. __3 __ Also be sure to fill up the lined space completely. Those capital letters should be from the bottom line to the top one.

Slow down

If your handwriting is hard to read, try slowing down a little. If you rush, it’s hard to control where you stop and start your letters.

Lower the pressure

4 That makes it harder to make the smooth lines. Try easing up and don’t hold the pencil too tightly.

5

Lots of games require you to write or draw pictures. So even though it’s not school work, you’re still using the skills you need to control your pen better.

The Olympic Weightlifting While weightlifting is used in many sports and athletic training, Olympic weightlifting is the name of the official sport name.1There are special conditions they have to meet in order to compete: body weight, height and strength. 2How fast and with what level of mobility(活动性)can the athlete perform the lift?
