钟嵘很明显赞美“初发芙蓉”的美。唐代更有了发展。唐初四杰，还继承了六朝之华丽，但已有了一些新鲜空气。经陈子昂到李太白，就进入了一个精神上更高的境界。李太白诗：“清水出芙蓉，天然去雕饰”，“自从建安来，绮丽不足珍。圣代复元古，垂衣贵清真”。“清真”也就是清水出芙蓉的境界。杜甫也有“直取性情真”的诗句。司空图《诗品》虽也主张雄浑的美，但仍倾向于“清水出芙蓉”的美：“生气远出”，“妙造自然”。宋代苏东坡用奔流的泉水来比喻诗文。他要求诗文的境界要“绚烂之极归于平淡”，即不是停留在工艺美术的境界，而要上升到表现思想情感的境界。平淡并不是枯淡，中国向来把“玉”作为美的理想。玉的美，即“绚烂之极归于平淡”的美。可以说，一切艺术的美，以至于人格的美，都趋向玉的美：内部有光彩，但这是含蓄的光彩，这种光彩是极绚烂，又极平淡。清代刘熙载的《艺概》也认为这两种美应“相济有功”，即形式的美与思想情感的表现结合，要有诗人自己的性格在内。这条线索，一直到现在还是如此。

常言道：诗无达诂。两千多年来，历代注家对《诗经》各篇主旨及文义的阐释多有不同。骆玉明表示：“所谓‘诗读百遍其义自见’，诗歌本身无法直译，一旦用白话文翻译出来就不可避免地损伤原文优美的意境，而读者常常先入为主地去用白话文来理解，这也未免暴殄天物。”作家蒋勋也反对看白话注释的古诗，并认为《诗经》里的一些篇章是完全不用翻译的。蒋勋说，如《氓》的白话译文：“流浪小伙笑嘻嘻，抱着布匹来换丝，不是真心来换丝，找我商量婚姻事。”与原文“氓之蚩蚩，抱布贸丝。匪来贸丝，来即我谋”一比，味道全无。所以，蒋勋说诗是没有办法翻译的。
