1984 is not a particularly good novel, but it is a very good essay. On the novel front, the characters are bland and you only care about them because of the awful things they live through. As a novel all the political exposition is heavyhanded, and the message completely overrides any sense of storytelling. As an essay, the points it makes can be earthshaking. It seems everyone who has so much as gotten a parking ticket thinks he lives in a 1984-dystopia. Every administration that reaches for power, injures civil liberties or collaborates too much with media is accused of playing Big Brother. These are the successes of 1984's paranoia, far outliving its original intent as a battery against where Communism was going (Orwell was a severely disappointed Marxist), and while people who compare their leaders to Big Brother are usually overreaching themselves and speak far away from Orwell's intent and vision, it is a useful catchcloth for dissent. Like so many immortalized books with a social vision, 1984's actual substance is so thin that its ideologies and fear-mongering aspects can be stretched and skewed to suit the readers. If you'd like a better sense of the real world and Orwell's intents, rather than third-hand interpretations of his fiction, then his Homage to Catalonia is highly recommended.。
George Orwell《1984》读后感

After reading George Orwell's "1984," I am left with a profound sense of unease and reflection. Orwell's dystopian masterpiece presents a chilling and haunting portrayal of a future society where freedom and individuality are brutally suppressed.Set in a totalitarian regime ruled by Big Brother, Orwell paints a bleak picture of a world where constant surveillance, manipulation, and propaganda are the norm. The Party's control over every aspect of its citizens' lives is terrifyingly thorough, with even thoughts and emotions being monitored and punished. The manipulation of language through Newspeak further emphasizes the eradication of independent thought and expression. What struck me most about this novel is Orwell's keen ability to show the destructive power of authoritarianism. Through his vivid descriptions and detailed world-building, he creates an atmosphere of oppression and fear that is palpable. The constant sense of surveillance and the relentless propaganda machine serve as a reminder of the fragility of freedom and the capacity for power to corrupt.Orwell's protagonist, Winston Smith, serves as a symbol of resistance against the oppressive regime. His longing for freedom and his rebellious spirit resonate with readers, as we witness his struggles against the all-encompassing control of the Party. Winston's desire for love, connection, and the preservation of individuality is a testament to the importance of these human elements that are too often taken for granted.Throughout the novel, Orwell delves into themes of truth, memory, and the manipulation of both. The concept of "doublethink," where individuals must hold contradictory beliefs, is a terrifying reminder of the power of ideology and brainwashing. The Party's ability to rewrite history and control the narrative further emphasizes the danger of a society devoid of independent thought and critical thinking. What I found particularly thought-provoking about "1984" is its relevance to our own world. Orwell's warnings about the dangers of unchecked power, surveillance, and the manipulation of information are eerily resonant in today's society. The novel serves as a cautionary tale, reminding us of the importance of safeguarding our freedoms, questioning authority, and remaining vigilant against the erosion of truth. In conclusion, George Orwell's "1984" is a gripping and unsettling novel that forces readers to confront the consequences of a society ruled by authoritarianism and mind control. Orwell's ability to create a dystopian world so vividly and convincingly serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of freedom and the necessity for active resistance against oppressive regimes. This timeless masterpiece serves as a testament to Orwell's prescience and his belief in the power of truth, individuality, and the indomitable spirit of the human soul.。

Imperfect Understanding about<1984>The <1984> is a 1949 novel by George Orwell. It’s originally published in a predicament of history. Time has witnessed its growing popularity. The “B.B”, as the unique emblem of dictator, intrigues an increasing amount of readers.I read the book when I was just enrolled at an university. I wondered the title of the book, and out of pure curiosity I took it home with me, turning out a wonderful beginning of reading life. I felt a lot and it subtly influenced my opinions inside mysteriously. All I need to do is to transfer to paper the interminable restless monologue that has been running inside my head, literally for years.1984 is a “negative utopia”, a startlingly original haunting novel that creates an imaginary world that is completely convincing. Nobody can deny the novel’s hold on the imagination of a whole generation. But I am still revolted by the plots and the setup. It’s a story of a powerless man ostracized and vaporized under the system of alleged “INGSOC” led by “B-B”.The protagonist was kind of alienation in an array of kenning adherents. And his occasional encounter of an archaic stuff in a slum awaked his desire to possess the history of the country and seek the truth. He was tired of the endless nonsense and stupid “HATE” activities, which were boring and self-deceiving. He started his diary by a stream of profanities. Maybe it’s in the beginning of the diary that he was noticed and spotted by secret police, who were clear-minded and relentless killers of the Party. He fell in love with a woman secretly and planned his next move to better the world. In the process polices were supervising at him and her. They were caught and tortured in various ways. At last they gave up and died.In the book, they were in that world but not of the world. They were heretics looking for truth and humanity. What impressed me most was the measurement of secret police, which were inhuman and grievous. Dictatorship is the soil cultivated cruelty and killing. Lots of people think that the novel is only imaginary and ironic, with a trend of negative expectation. The truth is that we have the precedent, which left us insufferable agony and incurable wounds.Recently I have just watched a movie called <the lives of others>, which is also shocking and revealing. The history can’t be randomly preened by winners. The movie assembles this book. Actually, they resonate to each other to some degree. Art is for art’s sake. The director should type out the cruel fact in the ending of the movie, and it should be like this: THE STORY NEVER HAPPENED. NO SUCH HUMAN AND KIND SECRET POLICE EVER EXISTED. This is the fact. The past is a mirror in accordance with future.WAR IS PEACEFREEDOM IS SLAVERYIGNORANCE IS STRENGTHThe history of East Germany cannot be replayed. The caption can’t brainwash wise minds.Even though Winston died, but I still admire his courage and bravery to refuse the surficial disturbance and remember the truth. It is only my imperfect understanding since one book has many different meanings for different people.。

A Book Report of 1984Have you ever wondered what feeling you would have if you were living in a society full of totalitarianism? How many days could you bear if your life was under pervasive government surveillance and incessant public mind control? Day or days? George Orwell dramatizes such a situation in 1984, which was first published in 1949 and then becomes one of the most famous dystopian novels in the world. The story is about a society ruled by the dictatorship of the Party. It is a totalitarian government, not only controlling the actions of people but also their minds. Every home has a telescreen, a most important propaganda machine of the Party. It cannot be turned off and continuously plays patriotic songs and news. Moreover, it can also transmit images and voices from one's home to the Thought Police. It is a time when man has no rights to speak and no freedom to do or even to think anything he likes. Big Brother is watching you! He is everywhere at all times. Then about Winston Smith, the main character in the book, is working in the Ministry of Truth, a department which is responsible for propaganda and historical revisionism. What Winston does every day is to rewrite the newspaper articles so that the historical record is congruent with the current party ideology. Although Winston has his own opinions about the society, he cannot exchange his ideas with others because it is not allowed. It becomes a a more serious crime when he falls in love with his co-worker Julia and has sex with her. Later Winston is arrested and suffers a lot. What makes me really sad is the scene in the room 101, the ultimate destination of a criminal opposing the Party. Overcome by the horror and the terror, Winston betrays his love for his own survival and completely bows his head to the party.I went through a range of emotions while watching this movie from comic in the beginning to disbelieving in the middle and to pure horror in the end. The story is supposed to be a satire on totalitarianism but the fun disappears once you consider if such a society is truly possible. Could this happen? Is Big Brother still sneaking up on us more and more, day by day?The story also makes me have a deep thought about the reality. Actually, I thinksomething in the book is a reflection of the reality. For example, in the story, people and even the young children are encouraged to tell on traitors, including their parents, and close friends. This reminds me of things in the Cultural Revolution in China. At that time, people were also encouraged by the government to tell on traitors, which became the determinant of family instability. Many tragedies happened and the lives of an entail generation were badly influenced. Fortunately, at the end our leaders and government came to realize the mistakes and corrected their errors. However, I think our country still has a long way to go. Many people may also know this joke. It is said that a man called Jack, was the first time to China. On the first night in China, he called the hotel clerk, "There is something wrong with the TV in my room. All the channels are playing the same program." "Oh, sir, I forget to tell you it is 7 o'clock now and it is time for CCTV news." Although it is just a joke, many people and I do have the same question, is it necessary to broadcast CCTV news in all satellite televisions? Is it just like a way of propaganda as what happened in 1984? Moreover, the government also keeps a lot of information closed to the public who has the right to know the truth. And restrictions to Internet is very strict without very complete law legislation. I think the government should seek improvements , or I'm afraid that one day we may face the same situation as what has been described in 1984.。

《1984》book reviewIn this book, what impressed me was that the Party seemed like soundless and stirless but the fact that the Party controlled the people’s minds impermeably. The telescreen was seen everywhere and it had a severe effect on the supervision. Meanwhile, it also made the life of people fill with nervous atmosphere. People here couldn’t have any negative feeling and rebellious minds. In this place where an action or an expression could be noticed, so the local police would arrest him/her soundlessly at the midnight. It was so horrible that many living people disappeared in the world without a sound. Because at the childhood they infused the fact of tampering compulsively, the new generation gave in to the control of the Party torpidly. Although they were the old generation that they experienced the history, their memories were also cleaned thoroughly and their memories about history only existed in the vague memories. As the books “Who controls the past and who will control the future, and who controls who now controls the past” put, the past was never an object fact, but the statement of being tampered.《1984》is George Orville’s masterpiece. And in this book, the author describes a society where there is no freedom under the totalitarian role. This book cares about your old brother everywhere, constraint and people disappearing at any time. It was so dreadful that people felt depressed and stifle. But under the pen of Orwell, the relationship among people makes us feel callous in our frame under this system. It also builds up a complete dark finding any way to entrance and beyond hope world. At last, the main character never feels any emotion without support. There is no denying that all the emotions have double minds. Then he has no choice but to love his old brother and hate his old brother—freedom is slave labor, ignorance is force, and war is peace. The totalitarian role destroys the humanity of Winston. Orwell describes the real details of the Ocean and there are many similarities with London postwar: depression, critical shortage of articles of everyday use and foods, in the street, there are many craters and most of the buildings are shabby, but for the readers, the protagonist Winston, the shortage of the material life is not vital. We can know the root of all the evils is the totalitarian role. In the society of rigid stratification, the essence of leading is inner layer that is made up of a very few.《1984》also indicates the critique on the government and the Party. The most important thing is that this book reveals the freedom and dreams that the author chases for the meaning oflife and the truth throughout the considering the Winston’s inner struggle. The end of 《1984》also reflects this pessimistic emotion. The representative of inner layer is Obrien, and the unity of the high wisdom and evil. At last, this makes Winston give in. But the moving point of this book does not only alarm the bad result that the totalitarianism can lead to, but also make the readers’ attempts to the love of life throughout describing the pursuit of maternal love, Eros and love of life. As the history of Utopia of Morton puts, at first Utopia is the miniature of ambition. Later, it gets more complicated, even it becomes an elaborate tool of expressing the criticism and sarcasm. Nevertheless, it is on the basis of the minds that people really want to get something forever. Actually, 《1984》is without exception. This is a circuitous way to expressing the ambition that Winton and the readers pursue the happy life and freedom. He has a healthy impulsive feel about Eros. That he associates with Julia awakes his many sleeping tenderness in his heart. Since the second time that they have got together, she had become an indispensable part of his life. She felt deep attaches to her when he got apart with her.She had the deepest wishes for they had been married couple for ten years and could gracefully walk down and bravely talking about the daily issues. Besides this Winton held closely her, maternal love but the poor truth was that her mother had already left the world and this added a deep understanding about life itself. He began to realize that her mother’s death a tragic and desperate, but it belonged to very distant things and remain in the past including the private affairs, the love and friendship, but only beloved with fears resentments and pains without dignity or profound and complex agonies and an ordinary looking and with normal physical conditions. So he was different totally from the traitors as he devoted almost his whole life to the work. From his experience and feelings, we can scene the general conditions of the whole society. The many years were being forced to hear and these things. He had begun to turn a deaf ear and eye towards the society indifferently. From my point of view, George expressed in his own way not only the government that was forced to obey only in a critical way severely, but also the understandings of humanity. Perhaps human beings will choose the final means of bending about on to these things that men feels an instinct desire and fear with because we are the symptom of cowardice, weak. The only positive solution is to give ourselves positive and energetic indication. For we never know how other people’s lives become t otally different for the energies that they have received from our words or movements. Life is a mirror as if we treat other people withsincerest gratitude. Of course, other people will treat us in the same way. Actually our life will be meaningful as a resource of this and as society are made up of all the individuals. So if each individual can be happy themselves, the society will benefit enormously from it that is harmonious and wonderful and heart in the world. Beliefs played a leading and indispensable part in our lives also equality that everyone should have within. It can simplify as many things, for instance, the feelings, these words, the things. For the source of courage and determinations that encourage as to fighting for everything that at first we find it appositive with and help us make the right choices, but gracefully and respectfully. The sincerest feelings bought about the faiths. The faiths sustained our eternal life. Or of indefinite these factors concentrates on the founding of a harmonious and strong society. The power that it could have upon us could raise a lot of reflections over the power. It’s really with our whole life to seek after that.。

1984 is one of the masterpieces of George Orwell.Written in 1948, 1984 was George Orwell's chilling prophecy about the future.Once published, the novel soon became a best-seller.As the New Yorker said,“A profound, terrifying, and wholly fascinating book…Orwell’s theory of power is developed brilliantly.”However, the world presented in 1984 is not only a illusion, but also a warning. The story is set in London, largest population center of Airstrip One,in 1984.Airstrip One,as part of the vast political entity Oceania, was always in war with one of the other two large countries. In London and the whole country, people were obliged to warship the man they never see by themselves, the Big Brother. The man, the leader of the party, the Insoc, controlled everything and everyone through a electric screen put in people's houses. The hero,Winston,as a member of the party, worked to edit newspapers as told. It's ridiculous to change the truth, but Big Brother said,"Who controls the past control the future."Totalitarianism is the theme of the novel.Under this kind of control,Winston still had a strong desire for freedom. He kept writing diaries or just taking down his thoughts secretly.Knowing Big Brother,as well as the party, was hiding everything true from the countrymen,Winston struggled with the belief that he could find someone else who had the same feeling and thought with him.Forced by this drive,Winston was drawn into a forbidden love affair with Julia,a woman who also didn't want to be controlled by the party, and joined a secret revolutionary organization called The Brotherhood, dedicated to the destruction of the Party, encouraged by a cadre of the party whom Winston thought he could trust. After a few times of trysts,Winston and Julia were disclosed and arrested.Winston didn't realize that the cadre cheated him until he was tortured by him.Wanting to hold his ideals,Winston refused to surrender to the party. However,Julia having told everything to the cadre,Winston had no choice but to submit. In the end of the story,Winston spent much of his time in a little café,said to himself that the party is right in everything. He became a man without any vigor. Of course,he never had the chance to fall love with any woman again,Julia included.I cannot but fell shocked and terrified while reading the book.I can't imagine what if the world really comes."Big Brother"and "Insoc"represented totalitarianism, and showed the ideal of Orwell that a society without freedom would be extremely horrible. It is not impossible for totalitarianism to show up today.Therefore,1984 is a book worth reading to remind us of keeping clear mind and helping ourselves.。

2010040102029 Question 1: What makes your wonder in this book? Why? What confuses you in this book?Besides Animal Farm, 1984 is the second novel of George Orwell’s I have read. Comparing with Animal Farm, 1984 is more political and more penetrating. In the novel, there’s a sentence:” If there was hope, it lays in proles”. However, how about the proles? They are wild, and they are a wild power. Maybe the party can’t control them, but it can regard them as animals and say:”Proles and animals are free!”When I read the book, what impresses me most is the superiority of the party. It is invincible. “Who controls the past controls the future; who controls the present controls the past.”Nevertheless, it is the party who controls the present, that is to say, it controls everything anytime. It always makes up lies and changes the history to maintain its own status. What’s more, it doesn’t give its members freedom. Even their marriages must have a recognized purpose which is to beget children for the service of the party. Besides, the party also wants to narrow the range of thoughts by using a new language called Newspeak. To be a member of such a party, he must be very sensitive. Every day even every minute, he is in the danger of being accused of conspiracies. For example, Winston-who believes nobody-always, thinks that people who are close to him must be a spy or an agent. Thus, he misunderstands Julia who is crazy about him. How silly he is!I am moved when Julia and Winston say they won’t betray each other. It’s hard for people to have a real love under that circumstance because the party will use all means to let them surrender! The last but not the least point I want to say is about truth. As we all know, two plus two makes four. It’s a truth. But if theparty says it’s five rather than four, then they have to follow it. Or else, they will bear the unbearable pain until they change the truth into a lie.So when reading this book, I’m full of compassion in my heart. Meanwhile I feel lucky that I have such a promising future!Question 2: How do you picture the author of this book? Why do you picture him or her in this way?Orwell’s writing career spanned near ly seventeen years. Ironically, although Orwell didn’t consid er himself a novelist, he wrote two of the most important literary masterpieces of the 20th century: Animal Farm and 1984.In Orwell’s writing, he sought truth. Even his fiction has elements of the world around him, of the wars and struggles that he witnessed, of the terrible nature of politics, and the terrible toll that totalitarianism takes on the human spirit. From the time he began to write at the age of twenty-four, Orwell longed to capture the struggles of “real” people, to live among the less fortunate, and to tell their stories. Of his own writing, Orwell has said that he writes because there is some kind of lie that he has to expose, some fact to which he wants to draw attention. Orwell certainly does this in 1984, a novel fraught with political purpose, meaning, and warning. In Spain, Orwell found what he had been searching for—a true socialist state. He joined the struggle against the Fascist party but had to flee when the group with which he was associated was falsely accused of secretly helping the Fascists.Shortly after Orwell and Eileen adopted a son in 1944, Orwell became a war correspondent for the Observer in Paris and Cologne, Germany. Tragically, Eileen died in the beginning of that year, just before the publication of one of his most important novels, Animal Farm. Despitethe loss of his wife and his own battle with poor health, Orwell continued his writing and completedtherevision of 1984 in 1948. It was published early the next year with great success.Question3: What was the author saying about life and livingthough this book? Explain. In the book 1984, we can see the Party always tried their best to control the people fully. This policy gives the leader maximum rights, but the disadvantage is obvious too. People living under this policy will feel their lives are not true and feel they are only dolls that are handled by the country. They d on’t have the most important things as humans. That is personal consciousness, which is the way we judged whether the man is alive really. Without it, people are just piles of meat. This is an imagined style thought by the author of this book. Actually, this is a very good way to control the people. There are 3 countries in the book. They are Oceania. Eurasia and Eastasia. However, the party uses Ministry of Truth to keep watch on every behavior of all the people. They made the members of the party frighten them all the time due to their number. Oceania takes the telescreen policy to controlthe people in the country. In the country, people have no secrets with themselves. You can see the telescreen everywhere. Once you do something or just think something that is against the rule of party, you will be considered to have committed a crime and be arrested by the thought police. The author of the 1984 wanted to expose the nature of the totalitarianism in real life.。
