This suggests that politicians who claim environmentalism is yesterday's issue may be seriously misjudging the public mood.A report from Mintel, the market research organization, says that despite recession and financial pressures, more people than ever want to buy environmentally frie ndly products and a “green wave” has swept through consumerism, taking in people previously untouched by environmental concerns. The recently published report also predicts that the process will repeat itself with “ethical” concerns, involving issues such as fair trade with the Third World and the social record of businesses. Companies will have to be more honest and open in response to this mood.Mintel‟s survey, based on nearly 1,000 consumers, found that the proportion who look for green products and are prepared to pay more for them has climbed from 53 per cent in 1990 to around 60 per cent in 1994. On average, they will pay 13 per cent more for such products, although this percentage is higher among women, managerial and professional groups and those aged 35 to 44.Between 1990 and 1994 the proportion of consumers claiming to be unaware of or unconcerned about green issues fell from 18 to 10 percent but the number of green spenders among older people and manual workers has risen substantially. Regions such as Scotland have also caught up with the south of England in their environmental concerns. According to Mintel, an image of green consumerism as associated in the past with the more eccentric members of society has virtually disappeared. The consumer research manager for Mintel, Angela Hughes, said it had become firmly established as a mainstream market. She explained that as far as the average person is concerned environmentalism has not …gone off the boil‟. In fact, it has spread across a much wider range of consumer groups, ages and occupations.Mintel‟s 1994 survey found that 13 per cent of consumers are “very dark green”, nearly always buying environmentally friendly products, 28 per cent are “dark green”, trying “as far as possible” to buy such prod ucts, and 21 per cent are “pale green” —tending to buy green products if they see them. Another 26 per cent are “armchair greens”; they said they care about environmental issues but their concern does not affect their spending habits. Only 10 per cent say they do not care about green issues.Four in ten people are “ethical spenders”, buying goods which do not, for example, involve dealings with oppressive regimes. This figure is the same as in 1990, although the number of' armchair ethical has risen from 28 to 35 per cent and only 22 per cent say they are unconcerned now, against 30 per cent in 1990. Hughes claims that in the twenty-first century, consumers will be encouraged to think more about the entire history of the products and services they buy, including the policies of the companies that provide them and that this will require a greater degree of honesty with consumers.Among green consumers, animal testing is the top issue—48 per cent said they would be deterred from buying a product if it had been tested on animals—followed by concerns regarding irresponsible selling, the ozone layer (臭氧层), river and sea pollution, forest destruction, recycling and factory farming. However, concern for specific issues is lower than in 1990, suggesting thatSFLEP College English (New Edition) Achievement Test (Band 4) 3many consumers feel that government and business have taken on the environmental agenda.1. Paris may not be a tourist attraction to a Parisian, but for a New Yorker, it may have many 49 . People travel for any number of reasons, and there are numerous attractions that 50 to a wide variety of tastes. In addition to being major business centers, the large cities offer attractions and entertainment for all kinds of people. Cultural events occur 51 including theatrical and operatic 52 , concerts, ballet, and art exhibitions, to name a few. At the 53 end of the scale, there is a greatSFLEP College English (New Edition) Achievement Test (Band 4)7variety of night life in urban centers to choose from, and there is also a wide selection of restaurants. Shopping is an attraction for many visitors, whether in the great department stores of New York and Tokyo or in the boutiques (流行小店)of Paris and London. The big cities also offer a unique atmosphere and history. The flower vendors and cable cars of San Francisco are part of the unusual atmosphere of that city. And in Paris, the Louvre is not only a museum, but also the 54 of important events in French history. One of the advantages of the big cities is their ability to 55 large numbers of tourists. These cities have an existing infrastructure (基础设施)that is capable of caring for the needs of millions of people; and many of the attractions that tourists visit have been developed primarily for the benefit of the inhabitants. Therefore, tourism is an economic plus for many big cities because it increases income from existing 56 , both public and private.Section BDirections: There are 2 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) andD). You should decide on the best choice.Passage OneQuestions 57 to 61 are based on the following passage. What might driving on an automated highway be like? The answer depends on what land of system is ultimately adopted. Two distinct types are on the drawing board. The first is a special purpose lane system, in which certain lanes are reserved for automated vehicles. The second is a mixed traffic system: fully automated vehicles would share the road with partially automated or manual driven cars. A special purpose lane system would require more extensive physical modifications to existing highways, but it promises the greatest gains in freeway capacity.Under either scheme, the driver would specify the desired destination, furnishing this information to a computer in the car at the beginning of the trip or perhaps just before reaching the automated highway. If a mixed traffic system way was in place, automated driving could begin whenever the driver was on suitably equipped roads. If special purpose lanes were available, the car could enter them and join existing traffic in two different ways. One method would use a special onramp. As the driver approached the point of entry for the highway, devices installed on8外教社®《大学英语》(全新版)4级学业测试the roadside would electronically check the vehicle to determine its destination and to ascertain that it had the proper automation equipment in good working order. Assuming it passed such tests, the driver would then be guided through a gate and toward an automated lane. In this case, the transition from manual to automated control would take place on the entrance ramp. An alternative technique could employ conventional lanes, which would be shared by automated and regular vehicles. The driver would steer onto the highway and move in normal fashion to a “transition”lane. The vehicle would then shift under computer control onto a lane reserved for automated traffic. (The limitation of these lanes to automated traffic would, presumably, be well respected, because all trespassers (非法进入者) could be swiftly identified by authorities.) Either approach to joining a lane of automated traffic would harmonize the movement of newly entering vehicles with those already traveling. Automatic control here should allow for smooth merging without the usual uncertainties and potential for accidents. And once a vehicle had settled into automated travel, the driver would be free to release the wheel, open the morning paper or just relax.57. We learn from the first paragraph that two systems of automated highways____.A) are being planned B) are being modifiedC) are now in wide use D) are under construction58. A special purpose lane system is probably advantageous in that ______.A) it would require only minor changes to existing highwaysB) it would achieve the greatest highway traffic efficiencyC) it has a lane for both automated and partially automated vehiclesD) it offers more lanes for automated vehicles59. Which of the following is TRUE about driving on an automated highway?A) Vehicles traveling on it are assigned different lanes according to their destinations.B) A car can join existing traffic any time in a mixed lane system.C) The driver should inform his car computer of his destination before driving onto it.D) The driver should share the automated lane with those of regular vehicles.60. We know from the passage that a car can enter a special purpose lane______.A) by smoothly merging with cars on the conventional laneB) by way of a ramp with electronic control devicesC) through a specially guarded gateD) after all trespassers are identified and removed61. When driving in an automated lane, the driver_______.A) should harmonize with newly entering carsB) doesn‟t have to rely on his computer systemC) should watch out for potential accidentsD) doesn‟t have to hold on to the steering wheelPassage TwoQuestions 62 to 66 are based on the following passage.SFLEP College English (New Edition) Achievement Test (Band 4)9The process of perceiving other people is rarely translated (to ourselves or others) into cold, objective terms. “She was 5 feet 8 inches tall, had had fair hair, and wore a colored skirt.” More often, we try to get inside the other person to pinpoint his or her attitudes, emotions, motivations, abilities, ideas and characters. Furthermore, we sometimes behave as if we can accomplish this difficult job very quickly—perhaps with a two-second glance. We try to obtain information about others in many ways. Berger suggests several methods for reducing uncertainties about others: watching, without being noticed, a person interacting with others, particularly with others who are known to you so you can compare the observed person‟s behavior with the known others‟ behavior, observing a person in a situation where social behavior is relatively unrestrained or where a wide variety of behavioral responses are called for, deliberately structuring the physical or social environment so as to observe the person‟s responses to specific stimuli; asking people who have had or have frequent contact with the person about him or her; and using various strategies in face-to-face interaction to uncover information about another person—questions, self-disclosures(自我表露), and so on. Getting to know someone is a never-ending task, largely because people are constantly changing and the methods we use to obtain information are often imprecise. You may have known someone for ten years and still know very little about him. If we accept the idea that we won‟t ever fully know another person, it enables us to deal more easily with those things that get in the way of accurate knowledge such as secrets and deceptions. It will also keep us from being too surprised or shocked by seemingly inconsistent behavior. Ironically, those things that keep us from knowing another person too well (e.g., secrets and deceptions) may be just as important to the development of a satisfying relationship as the things that enable us to obtain accurate knowledge about a person (e.g., disclosures and truthful statements).62.The word “pinpoint” (Line 3, Para. 1) basically means______.A) appreciate B) obtain C)interpret D) identify63. What do we learn from the first paragraph?A) People are better described in cold, objective terms.B) The difficulty of getting to know a person is usually underestimated.C) One should not judge people by their appearances.D) One is usually subjective when assessing other people‟s personality.64.It can be inferred from Berger‟s suggestions that ______.A) people do not reveal their true self on every occasionB) in most cases we should avoid contacting the observed person directlyC) the best way to know a person is by making comparisonsD) face-to-face interaction is the best strategy to uncover information about a person65. In developing personal relationships, secrets and deceptions, in the author‟s opinion, are_____.A) personal matters that should be seriously dealt withB) barriers that should be done away withC) as significant as disclosures and truthful statementsD) things people should guard against10外教社®《大学英语》(全新版)4级学业测试66. The author‟s purpose in writing the passage is ______.A) to give advice on appropriate conduct for social occasionsB) to provide ways of how to obtain information about occasionsC) to call the reader‟s attention to the negative side of people‟s charactersD) to discuss the various aspects of getting to know peoplePart V Cloze (15 minutes)Directions:There are 20 blanks in the following passage. People have to waste more time on their way home or to work and even might be involved in an accident. With the development of industry and population expansion, this problem becomes more and more serious. One solution is to lay down more roads. The solution has many advantages. For example, it can efficiently decrease the number of buses and trucks in many main streets. But it will take up so much land that crowded cities become even more crowded. Another solution is to open more bus lines. If more bus lines should be opened up, the number of bicycles and cars in the main streets would be greatly decreased. But the disadvantage of this solution is that many people would not feel so convenient as they used to.In my opinion, the right solution to the problem is the combination of the two, that is, to lay down more roads in spacious areas and to open up more bus lines in downtown areas.Part II Reading Comprehension (Skimming and Scanning)1.Y2. Mother‘s (rather than father‘s) own educational achievements have long been thought to be the key to children‘s progress at school. But government-funded research suggests that mothers can compensate for their lack of exam success if they offer their under-fives activities linked to literacy and numeracy.Researchers from Oxford, Cardiff and London universities, who measured the attainments of65316426.doc 2more than 2,000 children at the ages of three and five, found that their mothers‘education is important in accounting for differences between children. But what the mother did with the child was even more important. Those who talked frequently to their children, who played games with numbers and letters, read to them, took them to the library and taught them songs and nursery rhymes had a significant effect on their attainment both at the ages of three and five. Professor Pam Sammons of London University‘s Institute of Education, said, ―Children‘s progress is not completely determined by social disadvantages. What parents do with children is critically important. Parents who have no educational qualifications can still do many things to help their children. We need to encourage parents, particularly younger ones, to play with children and to talk to them.Sammons said the findings emphasized the importance of policies for supporting families of under-threes, for example, the government‘s Sure Start program. MPs on the Select Committee for Education are investigating early years education. Ministers have provided a nursery, playgroup or school place for every four-year-old, but critics say that too many children are now in school reception classes, which are not equipped for them. There are more staff workers for each child in nurseries than in reception classes. The researchers, comparing children‘s achievements in math and literacy, found that playgroups and private day nurseries tended to do much less well than nursery schools, which combined education, day care and reception classes. This research is consistent with previous studies that show the benefit of mother play in other areas such as in a child‘s creativity and social development using other devices such as music and toys. Music helps children connect the outer world of movement and sound with the inner world of feelings and observations. Children learn music the same way they learn language – by listening and imitating. Finger play promotes language development, motor skills and coordination, as well as self-esteem. Young children are proud when they sing a song and can do the accompanying finger movements. Listening to music also teaches important pre-reading skills. As youngsters use small drums or other percussion instruments (homemade or store-bought), they can play the rhythmic pattern of words.Babies become social beings through watching their parents, and through interacting with them and the rest of the family and later with others. It is a crucial time to begin teaching by example how people should behave toward one another. Toys that help babies with social development are stuffed animals, animal mobiles and dolls. Even very small babies can socialize with them. The infant will often converse with animal prancing on the crib bumpers or revolving on a mobile. Later, books and opportunities for make-believe and dress-up play also help children to develop social skills. In the beginning, babies‘ hand movements are totally random. But within a few months those tiny hands will move with more purpose and control. A mother has a particularly important role in the development of purposeful movement by giving her baby‘s hands plenty freedom; rather than keeping them swaddled or tucked under a blanket (except outdoor in cold weather). Researchers suggest providing a variety of objects that are easy for small hands to pick up and manipulate, and that don‘t require fine dexterity. And since young babies usually won‘t grasp objects that are directly in front of them, a mother should offer these objects from the side.Researchers suggest that mother give babies ample opportunity for ―hands-on‖ experience with the following:Rattles that fit small hands comfortably. Those with two handles or grasping surfaces allow a baby to pass them from hand to hand, an important skill, and those that baby can put their mouth on will help bring relief when teething begins.65316426.doc 3They also suggest mothers use cradle gyms (they fit across a carriage, playpen or crib) that have a variety of parts for baby to grab hold of, spin, pull and poke. Beware of those, however, with strings more than six inches long, and take any gym down once your baby is able to sit up.Another useful play device is an activity board that requires a wide range of hand movements to operate, many of which your baby won‘t be able to intentionally maneuver for a while, but some of which even a young infant can set in motion accidentally with a swipe of a hand or foot. Besides the spinning, dialing, pushing, and pressing skills these toys encourage, they also teach the concept of cause and effect.1.Mothers, either well-educated or badly-educated, can help their young children succeedacademically.2.Young babies at all ages benefit from mothers who talk and play games with them.3.Even if a mother has no educational qualifications, she should play and talk with her child.4.There is no shortage of nurseries, playgroup or school places.5.Listening to music can teach children important pre-reading skills.6.Babies can move their tiny hands within a few months after they are born.7.If you give an object to a baby you‘d better not offer it from the side of the baby.1.〔Y〕〔N〕〔NG〕2.〔Y〕〔N〕〔NG〕3. 〔Y〕〔N〕〔NG〕4.〔Y〕〔N〕〔NG〕5.〔Y〕〔N〕〔NG〕6. 〔Y〕〔N〕〔NG〕7.〔Y〕〔N〕〔NG〕8. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D).You should decide on the best choic.Passage OneQuestions 57 to 61 are based on the following passage. The human brain has two sides, and each side has different work to do.The left side of the brain controls language and number; it analyses and reasons. The right side65316426.doc 8controls our imagination; it controls our appreciation of music and our sense of rhythm. It is the right side of our brain which daydreams.Great artists and great scientists are similar. They both use the two sides of their brains. It is well-known that Albert Einstein (1879 –1955), as a great scientist, also enjoyed art, playing the violin and sailing. Einstein said his scientific discoveries grew from his imagination rather than from analysis, reason and language. He said that written and spoken words were not important in his thinking. The story goes that Einstein was daydreaming one summer‘s day while sitting on a hill. He imagined he was riding on sunbeams to the far distance of the universe. Then he found that he had returned to the sun. So he realized that the universe must curve. He got this idea by using his imagination. He then used the left side of brain to apply analysis, number and reason. And finally he used language to explain it.Traditional, established education in schools encourages us to use the left side of our brains. Language, number, analysis and reason are given more importance in our schools than imagination and daydreaming. However, we are encouraged to hop when we have two perfectly good legs! Then why don‘t we give more value to visual thinking? In fact, we all need both sides of our brains. We need to use our imaginations to think of solutions to problems and to enjoy emotional and artistic experiences. And we need to be logical and to be able to analyze and organize in order to survive day by day.57. According to the passage, the left side of the brain ________.A) controls language and numberB) controls our imaginationC) daydreamsD) controls our sense of rhythm58. What does the author want to show by using the example of Einstein?A) Great scientists are also great artists.B) The left side of Einstein‘s brain is very powerful.C) Einstein is a genius whose two sides of the brain are strong.D) The two sides of the brain are equally important.59. What do we learn about Einstein from the passage?A) He could play the violin well.B) He said his scientific discoveries are acquired by analysis rather than by daydreaming.C) He was the first person to discover the track of the sun.D) He was disgusted at language.60. What does the author mean by saying ―we are encouraged to hop when we have two perfectlygood legs‖ (Para. 4) ?A)We needn‘t hop because we are healthy.B)Only those who have something wrong in their legs can be encouraged to hop.C)It‘s foolish of us to hop when we have two perfectly good legs.D)We should use both sides of the brain.61. The author believes that the right side of our brain is as important as the left side because65316426.doc 9________.A) it controls our appreciation of music and sense of rhythmB) it enables us to make scientific discoveriesC) it is more important to analyze and organize in order to surviveD) the imaginations may provide solutions to problems and enable us to enjoy emotional andartistic experiencesPassage TwoQuestion 62 to 66 are based on the following passage.Elderly people respond best to a calm and unhurried environment. This is not always easy to provide as their behavior can sometimes be irritating. If they get excited or upset then they may become more difficult to look after. Although sometimes it can be extremely difficult, it is best to be patient and not to get upset yourself. You should always encourage old people to do as much as possible for themselves but be ready to lend a helping hand when necessary.Failing memory makes it difficult for the person to recall all the basic kinds of information we take for granted. The obvious way to help in this situation is to supply the information that is missing and help them make sense of what is going on. You must use every opportunity to provide information but remember to keep it simple and straightforward.―Good morning, Mum. This is Fiona, your daughter. It is eight o‘clock, so if you get up now, we can have breakfast downstairs.‖When the elderly person makes confused statements e.g. about going out to his or her old employment or visiting a dead relative, correct in a calm matter-of-fact fashion: ―You don‘t work in the office any more. You are retired now. Will you come and help me with the dishes?‖We rely heavily on the information provided by signposts, clocks, calendars and newspapers. These assist us to organize and direct our behavior. Confused old people need these aids all the time to compensate for their poor memory. Encourage them to use reminder boards or diaries for important coming events and label the contents of different cupboards and drawers. Many other aids such as information cards, old photos, scrap books, and addresses or shopping list could help in individual case.62. Why can‘t we always keep calm in front of old people?A)Because old people sometimes annoy us.B)Because old people sometimes don‘t understand us.C)Because we are sometimes in a bad mood.D)Because we are sometimes in a hurry.63. What happens to elderly people‘s memory according to the passage?A)Their memory becomes worse and recalls basic things as granted.B)Their memory becomes worse and can‘t remember basic things.C)They can‘t remember their failures.D)They can only remember past failures.64. Paragraph 3 gives an example illustrating ________.65316426.doc10A)how to provide simple, direct informationB) a daughter‘s care for her motherC) a daughter‘s duty to her motherD)the right procedure of helping the old65. Why are old people encouraged to use diaries?A)Because diaries can replace reminder boarders.B)Because diaries are the best way to record important events.C)Because diaries help make up for poor memory.D)Because diaries can label the contents of cupboards.66. What is the main idea of the passage?A)What happens to old people with failing memory.B)How to help old people with failing memory.C)Why old people have poor memory.D)How to improve bad memory.Part V Cloze (15 minutes)Directions:There are 20 blanks in the following passage. 中国的大学英语教育(College English teaching in China)中国的大学英语教育(college english teaching in china)much has been discussed recently on english teaching at college, someone says that it is a total failure. to some extent , it is reasonable to say so, for after ten-year english learning, most graduates can't properly communicate with foreigners, nor can we translate between languages, let alone write in english. where are the problem?to begin with, english teaching at college, to a great extent, teacher-centerde, turning a language class into an information class. it is still very common in the classroom that the teacher explains every language point in detail, while students take notes all the time.secondly, culture is neglected in english teaching because of poor text design. some redundant unrealistic materials and a great deal or grammar and structure exercises in the text lead to students memorizing a large vocabulary and a lot of english rules. few students know how , when and where to use them.finally, test-oriented education, in a sense, misleads and impedes college english teaching in china. for example, colege english test band four or six is so overemphasized in some colleges that teachers teach to the test, sacrificing learning for the sake of test results, and students only learn to pass the examination. as a result ,students actual language competence is weakened though the passing rate has increased.in conclusion, chinese english teaching is to be reformed. students should be centered on , culture knowledge ,should be introduced in language teaching , and examination should be dealt with appropiately.。

You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the centre.Passage 1Questions 51to 55are based on the following passageIt would be difficult to have a society like ours without public goods such as defense, transportation, and other services.A public good is one that a person can use without reducing the use of it for another person. One of the best examples of a public good is national defense. One person can benefit from our national defense without reducing another person's benefits. In fact, it is difficult to keep any person in our society from enjoying thebenefits of national defense. The market system does not work well in producing public goods. This is because a person who refuses to pay for a public good cannot be kept from using it. Suppose that the neighbors in a high crime area decide to hire a police force. Each neighbor, except Mrs. Smith, agrees to pay S 100 a year for it. Mrs. Smith refuses to pay because she knows that if all the others pay the $ 100, the police will guard the area anyway. So Mrs. Smith can enjoy the services of the police force without paying $100.The market system has no way to deal with this type of problem. For this reason, we cannot ask each person to make a direct payment in the form of product price. Therefore, we collect money for public goods by using taxes.51. According to the passage, public goods are ___A___.A) services enjoyed by all people .B) what we can buy and sell in public .C) products that we make for national defenseD) taxes paid by the people involved52 The writer gives the example of national defense in paragraph 2 in order to show that ____C__.A) there will be no safety if there is no national defenseB) all the people should be responsible for national defenseC) a public good is a shared benefit for the whole societyD) some public goods are more important than others53 The person who does not pay for a public good __D____.A) keeps himself from using its benefitB) cannot enjoy its benefit at any timeC) fails to keep its benefit from being usedD) enjoys its benefit all the same54. In the third paragraph the author explains __A____.A) what role the market system plays in producing public goodsB) how weak the market system is in producing public goodsC) why some people refuse to pay for public goodsD) what we can do to make use of the market system55. From the passage we learn that the purpose of collecting taxes is to ___A____.A) ensure the continuous supply of public goodsB) reduce the difference between the rich and the poorC) get extra money to support public goodsD) remind people of their dutyPassage TwoQuestions 56 to 60 are based on the following passageSummers with father were always enjoyable. Swimming, hiking, boating, fishing –the days were not long enough to contain all of our activities. There never seemed to be enough time to go church, which disturbed some friends and relations. Accused of neglecting this part of our education, my father accepted their criticism. He decided to institute a summer school for my brother and me. However, his summer course included ancient history, which Papa felt our schools neglected, and navigation, in which we first had a formal examination in the dining room, part of which consisted of tying several knots in a given time limit. Then we were each separately sent on what was grandly referred to as a cruise (巡游) in my father’s 18-foot knockabout. WE spent the night on board, and loaded down, according to my mother, with enough food for a week. I remember that on my cruise I was required to formally plot our course, using the tide table, even though our goal was an island I could see clearly across the water in the distance.56. What was the original reason for holding the summer school? BA) Friends and relatives thought the children should learn religion.B) The father wanted the children to learn more about religion.C) The children got poor grades in their regular school.D) The regular school teachers neglected the children.57. The purpose of the cruise mentioned in the passage was to _B__.A) have fun.B) test the author’s sailing abilityC) reward the author for completing summer schoolD) get to the island.58. Why did the author have to plot the course of her cruise? AA) She had to demonstrate her ability to do so.B) She was afraid of getting lost.C) The coast was dangerous.D) The tides were strong.59. How long did the author’s cruise last? BA) all summer. B) a week. C) overnight D) one day, morning till night.60. Apparently a knockabout is_C__.A) an island B) a cruise C)a boat D) a seaman’s knot.Passage ThreeQuestions 61to 65 are based on the following passageAmerica is a country on the move. People of all ages are exercising their way to better health. According to the latest figures, 59 percent of American adults exercise regularly--up 12 percent from just two years ago and more than double the figure of 25 year ago. Even non-exercises believe they would be more attractive and confident if they were more active. It is hard not to get the message. The advantages of physical fitness are shown on magazine covers, postage stamps, and television ads for everything, from beauty soaps to travel books. Exercise as a part of daily life did not catch on until the late 1960s when research by military doctors began to show the health benefits of doing regular physical exercises. Growing publicity (宣传) for races held in American cities helped fuel a strong interest in the ancient sport of running. Although running hasleveled off in recent years as Americans have discovered equally rewarding-and sometimes safer-forms of exercise, such as walking and swimming, running remains the most popular form of exercise. As the popularity of exercise continues to rise, so does scientific evidence of its health benefits.61. How many American adults were doing regular exercises two years ago? CA) About 70%. B) Nearly 60%. C) Almost 50%. D) More than 12%.62. A growing interest in sports developed after ___A___.A) research showed their health benefitsB) people got the message from magazine covers and postage stampsC) scientific evidence of health benefits was shown on TV adsD) an increasing number of races were held in American cities63. It can be learnt from the passage that the health benefits of exercise ___C___.A) are yet to be provedB) are to be further studiedC) are supported by scientific evidenceD) are self-evident65. The best TITLE for the passage is __B____.A) Different Forms of ExerciseB) Exercise-The Road to HealthC) Scientific Evidence of Health BenefitsD) Running-A Popular Form of SportPassage FourQuestions 66 to 70 are based on the following passageThe Internet has often been described as the biggest communications revolution since the printed book. But not too long ago it was a secretive field enjoyed by a few select individuals. These days, however, things have changed for the better, and it is now a thriving(繁荣) community with many millions of people exchanging information, ideas and opinions. The development of easier connections, more user-friendly software and cheaper access has opened up the “information superhighway” to everyone in all fields of life. For language teachers, it is the perfect medium. In the past, teachers spent hours collecting leaflets and menus, handouts in the street and free magazines from street stands, and buying foreign language newspapers and magazines. The Internet can be an infinite resource file of texts, listening material, video files, live TV from around the world ... The list is endless. And, of course, it's not merely a source of material in English, but also home of professional knowledge for teachers: bibliographies, chat groups, articles, courses and conferences. Unit 4: Flight 93: What I Never Know(第93次航班:我所无法理解的事)Introductory RemarksSince Sept. 11, 2001, the story of the passengers who fought their hijackers on United Airlines Flight 93 has become a model account of good thwarting evil. No one will ever know exactly what happened on that plane. But the last-minute calls made by some of the passengers give us a more complete account of the struggle of these everyday people. Here is one of the stories of courage and heroism.United Airlines Flight 93United Airlines Flight 93 was a Boeing 757 –222 flight that regularly flew from Newark International airport to San Francisco International airport, continuing on to Narita International Airport in Tokyo, Japan, on a different aircraft. On September 11, 2001, the aircraft on the flight was one of the four planes hijacked as part of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. It was the only one of the four planes that did not reach its intended target, instead crashing into the field in south Pennsylvania. It is believed that the pilot, flight attendants and some of the passengers fought back. The crash might have resulted from the hijackers either deliberately crashing the aircraft or losing control of it as they fought with the passengers. Few people shared Diego’s post-match tears. In fact many rejoiced that such an ugly brute of a team had lost.Eight years before, in Spain, Maradona, then newly arrived at Barcelona, disgraced himself by being sent off in a Second Phase game with Brazil. Even four years before that the 18-year-old Maradona was a source of great controversy when he was left Out of the victorious squad that won on home ground.USA 1994 was the end for Maradona as a player. Right after the Nigeria game, he was picked for drugs-screening and tested positive for banned stimulant ephedrine (麻黄硷).He was banned from the rest of the tournament and the team fell apart, going out in the second round to Romania.21. Wool from sheep proved to be an effective “sponge” to soak up oil from the waters of the Persian Gulf after the Gulf War in 1991. The absorbent qualities of wool were used to good effect in wool poles which swept across the surface of the water and cleaned up the oil.(加)Now the same absorbent qualities are being used by railways in the Netherlands. Wool mats produced by Rhanex Wools of New Zealand have been laid between the rails at eight major Dutch railway stations to soak up diesel oil dropping from locomotives. Dutch authorities were worried that diesel oil was seeping (渗入) through the ground into the water-table, which is used for farm irrigation and to supply drinking water. The mats can be regularly squeezed to extract the diesel oil from them, and then reused.Similar wool mats are being used in inner city car parking lots in Sydney, Australia, to soak up oil dropping from parked cars. One parking lot owner believed that the value of his land could be reduced by oil pollution. The environmental friendly qualities of wool are also being put to good use to protect wool itself. High value Merino sheep in Australia and Canada are wearing wool covers to protect their fleece (羊毛).65316475.doc 426. Which of the following is not one of wool’s advan tages?A. The family has bee n the focus of the individual’s loyalty and affection, of his economic interest, and even of his legal duty. Many an older Frenchman has spent his youth in a world where he was expected to regard cousins, uncles and grandparents as more important to him than friends of his own age, and where the family’s needs and de mands were put before those of the local community or even of the State. The main change since the war is that the focus of loyalty has been steadily narrowing from the “extended family”to the “nuclear family”, i.e. the home cell of parents and children. In the rural areas the traditionally big peasant families have been losing their influence as the young drift away to the town. As property gives way to income and family management disappears, the tight network of the big family gath ering has become less necessary for the individual’s future, and also less easy to maintain. Many younger couples today prefer pleasure travelling, or a weekend cottage shared with a few friends, to the traditional big family reunions on Sundays and in August. But old values are still there. Clan (氏族) loyalties towards more distant relatives may become weak, an adult’s ties with his own parents and even with their parents often remain remarkably strong. And if many younger people are today trying to lead more emotionally independent lives, it is often not without a sense of guilt, or an awareness of the pain it causes to their parents. This may be so in any country: it is especially sharp in France.31. In France, people used to _________.A. value more their families than the countryB. attach most importance to their friendsC. regard their cousins and uncles more important than their parentsD. consider the local community prior to the state32. The “nuclear family” will not include _________.A. fatherB. motherC. childrenD. grandparents33. The rural families are growing smaller because _________.65316475.doc 5A. many young men and women were killed in the warB. more and more people choose to stay singleC. more and more families have only one childD. many young men and women are leaving the country for cities34. Which of the following statements is NOT true?A. The French have given up their clan loyalties to independence.B. Family gathering has become less necessary nowadays.C. Many younger couples spend weekends and holidays themselves or with a few friends.D. The old values still have their influence today.35. What does “this” in the last sentence of the passage refer to ?A.Loyalty to the family.B. Emotionally independence.C. Sense of guilt.D. Difference between old values and new values.Passage FourWhen it comes to walking off those excesses, a lengthy hike once a day will do you far more good than nipping down to (一溜烟跑) the shops every couple of hours — even if the short walks add up to the same amount of time, say exercise researchers in Britain. But walks of any length beat sitting at home with your feet up and watching television, they stress. Some researchers in Britain reached these conclusions after putting 56 couch potatoes through an 18-week course of daily walks. They found that longer walks produce the most beneficial changes to the composition of blood fats, but walks of any length improve the fitness of the heart. In the study, the normally inactive subjects were divided into three roughly equal groups. The “long walkers” took a hike of between 20 and 40 minutes every day. “Intermediate walkers” had two rounds of jogging of 10 to 15 minutes, and “short walkers” did three stints of 90 to 110 minutes. The controls sat at home, as usual. At the start and end of the 18 weeks, the health and fitness of each group were measured and it was found that the long walkers were healthiest, as measured by altered fat profiles in their blood. At the end, each litre of blood from the long walkers contained an average 0. 05 grains less apolipoprotein (阿朴脂蛋白) II, a “bad” fat that is linked with heart disease. This was more than twice the drop seen in the intermediate walkers, and five times that in short walkers. In the controls, the level of this fat stayed the same. The drop in apolipoprotein II in the long walkers was matched by a rise in the blood level of apolipoprotein I, a “good” fat that is associated with smooth arteries.36. According to the researchers, _________ is least beneficial to your health.A. taking a lengthy hike once a dayB. going shopping several times every dayC. doing jogging every morningD. sitting in the sofa watching TV every evening37. “Couch potato” is used to refer to a kind of _________.A. farmersB. vegetablesC. movie-goersD. TV viewers38. Which of the following statement is FALSE?A. Longer walks benefit our composition of blood fats.B. The subjects in the study all often watch TV.C. Unit 2: Deer and the Energy Cycle Introductory RemarksLife depends on energy. All human beings eat food and make use of the chemical energy in it, and so do all other animals. Calling energy the currency of the ecological system, Prof. Moen argues that it is neither love nor money but energy that makes the world go round. However, our energy sources are limited and, to make matters worse, we are rapidly using up our energy supplies. It is extremely important therefore that we conserve the supplies we have so as to make them last as long as possible. In this article Prof. Moen describes in great detail the life of deer round the year and the various means by which they survive the hard winter. When he concludes by saying “it is biologically reasonable for deer to reduce their cost of living to increase their chances of surviving in winter,” he is actually leading us to the question: If deer can do that, why not we human beings? Y ou willbegin your first "real job." Generally speaking, most of what you have learned in school will not prepare you for this. There is a big difference between being a student and being an employee. Certainly, more will be expected of you. The best career-related advice I ever received came from my former boss on my first day of work. She told me to listen and observe before suggesting any changes. I took that advice and have used it in other situations, both in and out of the workplace. While innovation is a good thing, it is important to be mindful of dynamics of the workplace. If you are entering an environment where routines are already in place, a newcomer walking in and talking about"better ways" to do things, will often be met with negative reactions. Why? First, you knownothing about why they do things the way they do. Second, you haven't gained the trust ofyour co-workers. Finally, people, by nature, are threatened by changes.By listening and observing, you will gain a lot. Y ou will learn about the environment ofwhich you are now a part. Y ou will find out more about the people you are working with. Y ou may save yourself from making a major, public mistake —you are the new kid on the block while your co-workers have been around longer. Y ou can learn from their collectiveexperience.1. But they say the dams have also caused human suffering and environmental damage.A new report by experts of the World Commission on Dams is the first major study of the world’s largest dams. The World Commission on Dams is an independent group. The twelve-member commission includes representatives from industry, dam owners, governments and environmental activists.Dams provide about t wenty percent of the world’s electric power. They also provide flood control services and water supplies for agriculture. There are about 45,000 large dams in the world. About half of the world’s dams are in China and India. The commission studied about 125 large dams. Large dams are those more than fifteen meters high. China’s huge Three Gorges Dam and dams on India’s Narmada River were a major part of the study. The experts found that between forty-million and eighty-million people have been forced to move from their homes because of dams. Many people are displaced because of concerns that the dams may cause floods. The study also found that many dams are not operated well and cost too much. It says dams have led to accidents and the loss of land, forests, fish, and other wildlife. Efforts to reduce the harmful effects of dams have not been successful. The World Commission on Dams says large dam projects should be approved only if they meet rules established by the commission. It says decisions about whether to build the structures should honor the interests of everyone involved.6. Which of the following statements is true of the World Commission on Dams?A.
