One morning I had grabbed my favorite spot at a local Starbucks and was going through the newspaper when I noticed a man in ragged clothing looking really untidy. I felt led to speak to this man and so I did.I learned that he was homeless and just wandered from place to place. Starbucks was nice enough to allow him to come in from the cold or the heat depending on the day. I also learned that he used to be an architect, but as we spoke I saw more and more that he wasn’t at the fullest of mental capabilities, which made me even more upset that he didn’t have a place to go.I sat with this man for a very long time in Starbucks calling different clinics, hospitals, shelters, police departments. He even gave me a beat up business card of a gentleman saying that was his son’s phone number. It was an out-of-state number, but I called anyway but was not able to reach him. Unfortunately, all the places I called were unable to take him.I asked him if he was hungry and he said yes, so I went down the street to a deli (熟食店) and ordered a sandwich and drink. When I got back, my new-found friend became angry for a reason I was not aware of or maybe it was some sort of mental disturbance. All I could do was set the sandwich down and told him that I’ll leave it there for him if he wanted it and I left. I walked around town for a couple of minutes and then headed back to see if he was still there.A man who was sitting in Starbucks most of the time when I was there came out and told me that the man ate the sandwich and that he was touched that I had sat with him like I did. It seemsto me that no matter whether something goes awry (非正常的) on the surface, there is always something beautiful at a deeper level.I still remember my friend. I looked for him every time I was in town, but that was the last time I saw him. I hope that I had provided some glimmer of hope that he was not forgotten.56. How did the author feel when she noticed the poor man?A. She felt lonely as a single mother.B. She felt worried about her future job.C. She felt it necessary to talk to the man.D. She felt upset and disturbed by the man.57. Why did the author feel upset during her conversation with the wanderer?A. Because she realized that the man was a liar rather than an architect.B. Because the man was mentally incapable and might attack others.C. Because the man was suffering from both physical and mental disabilities.D. Because limited mental capabilities added to the difficulty of this homeless man.58. What did the author try to do for the poor man in Starbucks?A. To find a shelter for him.B. To wait for his son’s phone call.C. To order him some food.D. To prevent him from being hurt.59. We can learn from the underlined sentence that ________.A. though unable to find a place for the man, she was praiseworthyB. in spite of his messy appearance, the man had a grateful heartC. though living a poor life, the homeless man remained optimisticD. the man had a strong desire to share his satisfaction with othersBEveryone agrees that all the creatures want happiness and are afraid of pain and grief. The question, however, is “What is real happiness?” The desire for happiness has no meaning without understanding the real nature of happiness.Generally, ordinary beings consider sensual pleasures as happiness, and their actions are directed toward gaining these. According to them, searching for happiness means searching for pleasures of the senses. The question, “What is happiness?”, does not arise(出现)in their hearts, because in their hearts they think of a life full of sensual joys as a happy life. Some thinkers say, “Happiness does not lie in the objects of enjoyment; happiness or unhappiness lies in the imagination.” To prove their belief they give examples like the following one. A man has a two-storey house. When he thinks of those who have a house with three storeys or more, he feels unhappy. When he thinks of those who have just a cottage, he feels happy. Such happiness does not lie in possessions(占有物), but in the imagination. They advise people to take inspiration from those who have few possessions but are quite happy. If you only consider people wealthier than yourself, you will always be unhappy. If you want to be happy, they say, look at the poor. But it is unreasonable to hold that happiness lies in the imagination. And it is inappropriate to think that someone is happy if he only imagines himself better than the poor and the unhappy. This attitude also satisfies the sense of pride of possession. This can never be called happiness. Unless we find out where happiness lies, we cannot really become happy. Some ask people to do this or that, and say, “This way your desires will be satisfied. That way you will get what you want and become happy.” People holding these views regard happiness as satisfaction of desires and unhappiness as denial(否定) of such satisfaction.60. The under lined word “cottage” in Paragraph 3 probably refers to ________.A. a house in one’s imaginationB. a modern buildingC. a desired objectD. a small house61. The author may agree that ________.A. by comparing themselves with the poor, people will feel happyB. people won’t feel happy without a desire for happinessC. possessing wealth may lead to a sense of prideD. people have to experience pain and grief before finding happiness62. The best title for this passage would be “________”.A. What Is Happiness?B. How to Get HappinessC. Happiness and DesireD. Happiness and ImaginationCA speech is a wonderful opportunity to inform, persuade or entertain. The best speeches often take on a combination of all three of these components(组成部分). However, before you can goabout the writing of a great speech, it is important to set goals. Goals keep you, your speech and your audience focused. What a goal isIn the context of a speech, a goal is the purpose of the speech, and what it hopes to accomplish. For example, the goal of a eulogy(颂歌) might be to celebrate the life of a loved one. The goal of a speech at a political gathering would be to inform the crowd about the political position of a candidate and persuade them to vote and campaign for the candidate in question. Why a goal is importantWithout a goal, a speech is without direction. The goal informs the structure and content of the speech. For example, if a speech's goal is to convince people that smoking is bad for them, the speech will be structured with persuasive arguments to back up the goal. A speech with a goal of informing the audience will keep the information fair and factual.A goal is incredibly important to the speech's ability to connect with an audience. If the speaker is unaware of the goal of the speech, the audience will likely be unaware as well. This severely reduces the effectiveness of the message.Aside from informing the audience of the content and structure, a speech's goal drives the speaker to greater heights. If a speaker is asked to speak on a specific subject, but never establishes the goal, they won't know where to start in the research, organizing and writing of the speech.______________If you have been charged with delivering a speech, establishing a goal can seem difficult at first. There are several things to take into consideration. First, think about who you will be speaking to. The demographic(人口统计) of your audience will likely determine whether you will be able to persuade them, or whether they will be able to sit through(一直坐到……结束). Second, think about the topic itself. If the topic is something controversial(有争议的), it may worth your while to consider an informative approach to present both sides of the issue. Finally, consider your resources. A speech with an informative or persuasive goal usually requires a great deal of research, and sometimes takes more time to write.63. According to the passage, what three components does the best speech combine?A. Informing, delivering and entertaining.B. Informing, persuading and entertaining.C. Informing, writing and delivering.D. Informing, writing and persuading.64. The goal of a speech at a political gathering might be ________.A. to persuade the audience to vote for a candidateB. to celebrate the life of a person you admireC. to entertain the audience with humor and magicD. to persuade the audience to buy new products65. All the following indicate the importance of a speech goal EXCEPT that ________.A. a speech will lose its direction without a goalB. a speech goal can help keep the audience aware of the speechC. a speech goal can help the speaker know about the research, organizing and writingD. a speech goal makes it possible for the speaker to achieve whatever he wants in life66. Which of the following can be filled into the blank as the subtitle for the last paragraph?A. How to achieve a speech goalB. How to deliver a difficult speechC. What to consider to establish a goalD. What to consider to deliver a speechDHans was an honest fellow with a funny round good-humored face. Living alone, every day he worked in his garden. In all the countryside there was no garden so lovely as his. All sorts of flowers grew there, blooming in their proper order as the months went by, one flower taking another flower’s place, so that there were always beautiful things to see, and pleasant odors to smell.Hans had many friends, the most devoted being the Miller. So devoted was the rich Miller to Hans that he’d never go by hi s garden without plucking a large bunch of flowers or a handful of sweet herbs, or filling his pockets with fruits. The Miller used to talk about noble ideas, and Hans nodded and smiled, feeling proud of having such a friend. The neighbors thought it strange that the rich Miller never gave Hans anything in return, though he had hundreds of sacks of flour, many cows and sheep, but Hans never troubled his head about these, and nothing gave him greater pleasure than to listen to all the wonderful things about the unselfishness of true friendship. In spring, summer, and autumn Hans was very happy, but when winter came, and he had no fruit or flowers to sell, he suffered from cold and hunger. Though extremely lonely, the Miller never came to see him then.“There’s no good in going to see Hans while the snow lasts.” The Miller said to his wife, “When people are in trouble they shouldn’t be bothered. So I’ll wait till the spring comes when he’s happy to give me flowers.”“You’re certainly very thoughtful,” answered his wife, “It’s quite a treat to hear you talk about friendship.”“Couldn’t we ask Hans up here?” said their son. “I’ll give him half my meal, and show him my white rabbits.”“How silly you are!” cried the Miller. “I really don’t know what’s the use of sending you to school. If Hans came up here, and saw our warm fire, our good supper, and our red wine, he might get envious, and envy is a most terrible thing, and would spoil anybody’s nature. I am his best friend, and I’ll always watch over him, and see that he’s not led into any temptation. Besides, if Hans came here, he might ask me for some flour. Flour is one thing, and friendship is another, and they shouldn’t be confused. The words are spelt differently, and mean quite different things. Everybody can see that.” He looked seriously at his son, who felt so ashamed that he hung his head down, and grew quite scared, and began to cry into his tea.Spring coming, the Miller went down to see Hans. Again he talked about friends hip. “Hans, friendship never forgets. I’m afraid you don’t understand the poetry of life. See, how lovely your roses are!”Hans said he wanted to sell them in the market to buy back his things which were sold during the hard time of the winter.“I’ll give you many good things. I think being generous is the base of friendship.” said the Miller. “And now, as I’ll give you many good things, I’m sure you’d like to give me some flowers in return. Here’s the basket, and fill it quite full.”Poor Hans was afraid to say anything. He ran and plucked all his pretty roses, and filled the Miller’s basket, imagining the many good things promised by the Miller. The next day he heard the Miller calling: “Hans, would you mind carrying this sack of flour for me to market?”“I’m sorry, but I am really very busy today.”“Well,” said the Miller, “considering that I’m going to give you my things, it’s rather unfriendly of you to refuse. Upon my word, you mustn’t mind my speaking quite plainly to you.”Poor Hans was driven by his friendship theory to work hard for his best friend, leaving his garden dry and wasted. One evening Hans was sitting by fire when the Miller came.“Hans,” cried the Miller, “My little boy has fallen off a ladder and hurt himself, and I’m going for the Do ctor. But he lives so far away, and it’s such a bad windy night. It has just occurred to me that you can go instead of me. You know I’m going to give you my good things, so you should do something for me in return.”“Certainly,” cried Hans. He struggled in to the stormy night, and got the doctor to ride a horse to the Miller’s house in time to save the boy. However, Hans got lost in the darkness, and wandered off into a deep pool, drowned. At Hans’ funeral, the Miller said, “I was his best friend. I should w alk at the head of the procession.” Every now and then he wiped his eyes with a handkerchief.67. From the passage, we can learn that Hans ___________.A. respect the Miller very muchB. had a strong wish for wealthC. was extremely wise and honestD. was highly spoken of by the Miller68. From the Miller’s talk at home, we can see he was ___________.A. serious but kindB. helpful and generousC. caring but strictD. selfish and cold-hearted69. What’s the main cause of Hans’ sad death?A. Little formal education.B. Blind devotion to a friend.C. A sudden change of weather.D. True friendship between them70. The author described the Miller’s behavior in order to ___________.A. please the readers with an unbelievable joking taleB. show the friendship between Hans and the MillerC. warn the readers about the danger of a false friendD. persuade people to be as intelligent as the Miller第II卷(非选择题,共35分)第四部分:任务型阅读(共10小题;每空1分,满分10分)请认真阅读下面短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入最恰当的单词。

AWhen friends come to visit us in the evening, they spend their time telling us that they are in a hurry and looking at their watches. It isn’t that our friends are all very busy. It is just that we haven’t got a TV set. People think that we are very stran ge. “but what do you do in the evenings?” they are always asking. The answer is simple. Both my wife and I have hobbies. We certainly don’t spend our evenings staring at the walls. My wife enjoys cooking and painting and often attends evening classes in foreign languages. This is particularly useful as we always go abroad for our holidays. I collect stamps and I am always busy with my collection. Both of us enjoy listening to music and playing chess together.Sometimes there are power cuts and we have no electricity in the house. This does not worry us. We just light candles and carry on with what we were doing before. Our friends are lost ---no televisions! So they don’t know what to do. On such evenings our house is very full as they all come to us. They all have a good time. Instead of sitting in silence in front of the television, everybody talks and plays games. Yes, life is possible without television!1. The writer’s friends are in a hurry to leave when they visit him in the evening because _____A. they have a lot of things to do at homeB. they don’t want to stay too long at someone else’s homeC. they are always busy with their workD. they want to go back home to watch TV2. When there is no e lectricity, the writer’s friends _____.A. can’t see anything at homeB. don’t know how to spend their eveningC. do something else by the candle’s light at homeD. stay at home and wait until electricity is on again3. The story tells us that _____.A. the writer and his wife don’t like watching TVB. watching TV wastes too much timeC. we can manage to live without televisionD. the writer and his wife have a lot of hobbiesBCan animals be made to work for us? Some scientists think that one day animals may be taught to do a number of simple jobs. They say that in a film or on TV we may see elephants, or monkeys, dogs, bears, or other animals doing a lot of things. If you watch carefully, you may find that those animals are always given something to eat in return for doing them. Some of the choices seem odd to me — but that’s part of the fun, as you wonder why. The notes make the book really useful. Every home should have a copy.POEMS THAT MAKE GROWN MEN CRYEdited by Anthony and Ben Holden (Simon & Schuster £16.99)This is a fascinating, wide-ranging selection of poems chosen by 100 well-known men — simply because they find them deeply moving. But grown men aren’t supposed to cry, are they? Some of the poems are about loss, as you’d expect, but others are about deeply held political passions or intense observations of nature. Each is introduced by the chooser, usually with frank personal detail.BLACK COUNTRY by Liz Berry (Chatto £10)This is a writer I’m thrilled to discover — someone who takes a pride in the Midlands, where she lives. Berry uses some of the dialect words she heard as a child, turning ordinariness into something direct, tender and beautiful. The disagreeable Brummie accent becomes music in the hands of this fine young poet.LEARNING TO MAKE AN OUD IN NAZARETH by Ruth Padel (Chatto £10)Padel is one of our most talented writers. Poet, naturalist, musician and travel writer, she turns her multi-layered poetic attention to the Middle East, seeking peace and harmony through sensitive and moving poems that offer hope even as they reflect upon struggle. Her prolific and passionate creativity is proof that ‘making is our defenceagainst the dark’.56. Poems that Make Grown Men CryB. Poetry by HeartC. Black CountryD. Learning to Make an Oud in NazarethBEvery fall, like clockwork, Linda Krentz of Beaverton, Oregon, felt her brain go on strike. "I just couldn't get going in the morning," she says. "I'd get depressed and gain 10 pounds every winter and lose them again in the spring." Then she read about seasonal affective disorder, a form of depression that occurs in fall and winter, and she saw the light literally. Every morning now she turns on a specially constructed light box for half an hour and sits in front of it to trick her brain into thinking it's still enjoying those long summer days. It seems to work.Krentz is not alone. Scientists estimate that 10 million Americans suffer from seasonal depression and 25 million more develop milder versions. But there's never been definitive proof that treatment with very bright lights makes a difference. After all, it's hard to do a double-blind test when the subjects can see for themselves whether or not the light is on. That's why nobody has ever separated the real effects of light therapy from placebo (安慰剂) effects.Until now, in three separate studies published last month, researchers report not only that light therapy works better than a placebo but that treatment is usually more effective in the early morning than in the evening. In two of the groups, the placebo problem was resolved by telling patients they were comparing light boxes to a new anti-depressant device that gives off negatively charged ions (离子). The third used the timing of light therapy as the control. Why does light therapy work? No one really knows."Our research suggests it has something to do with shifting the body's internal clock," says psychiatrist Dr. Lewey. The body is programmed to start the day with sunrise, he explains, and this gets later as the days get shorter. But why such subtle shifts make some people depressed and not others is a mystery. That hasn't stopped thousands of winter depressives from trying to heal themselves. Light boxes for that purpose are available without a doctor's prescription. That bothers psychologist Michael Terman of Columbia University. He is worried that the boxes may be tried by patients who sufferfrom mental illness that can't be treated with light. Terman has developed a questionnaire to help determine whether expert care is needed. In any event, you should choose a reputable manufacturer. Whatever product you use should give off only visible light, because ultraviolet light damages the eyes. If you are photosensitive (对光敏感的), you may developa rash. Otherwise, the main drawback is having to sit in front of the light for30 to 60 minutes in the morning. That's an inconvenience many winter depressives can live with.59. What is the probable cause of Krentz's problem?A. An unexpected gain in body weight.B. Unexplained impairment of her nervous system.C. Weakening of her eyesight with the setting in of winter.D. Poor adjustment of her body clock to seasonal changes.60. What is the CURRENT view concerning the treatment of seasonal depression with bright lights?A. Its effect remains to be seen.B. It serves as a kind of placebo.C. It proves to be an effective therapy.D. It hardly produces any effects.61. What is psychologist Michael Terman's major concern?A. Winter depressives will be addicted to using light boxes.B. No mental patients would bother to consult psychiatrists.C. Inferior light boxes will give off harmful ultraviolet lights.D. Light therapy could be misused by certain mental patients.62. Which of the following statements is TRUE?A. Winter depressives prefer light therapy in spite of its inconvenience.B. Light therapy increases the patient's photosensitivity.C. Eye damage is a side effect of light therapy.D. Light boxes can be programmed to correspond to shifts in the body clock. CIt was once common to regard Britain as a society with class distinction. Each class had unique characteristics. In recent years, many writers have begun to speak the 'decline of class' and 'classless society' in Britain. And in modern day consumer society everyone is considered to be middle class. But pronouncing the death of class is too early. A recent wide-ranging societyof public opinion found 90 percent of people still placing themselves in particular class; 73 percent agreed that class was still a vital part of British society; and 52 percent thought there were still sharp class differences. Thus, class may not be culturally and politically obvious, yet it remains an important part of British society. Britain seems to have a love of stratification. One unchanging aspect of a British person's class position is accent. The words a person speaks tell her or his class. A study of British accents during 1970s found that a voice sounding like a BBC newsreader was viewed as the most attractive voice, Most people said this accent sounded 'educated' and'soft'. The accents placed at the bottom in this study, on the other hand, were regional(地区的)city accents. These accents were seen as 'common' and 'ugly'. However, a similar study of British accents in the US turned these results upside down and placed some regional accents as the most attractive and BBC English as the least. This suggests that British attitudes towards accent have deep roots and are based on class prejudice. In recent years, however, young upper middle-class people in London, have begun to adopt some regional accents, in order to hide their class origins. This is an indication of class becoming unnoticed. However, the 1995 pop song 'Common People' puts forward the view that though a middle-class person may 'want to live like common people' they can never appreciate the reality of a working-class life.63. A recent study of public opinion shows that in modern Britain ________.A. it is time to end class distinctionB. most people belong to middle classC. it is easy to recognize a person’s classD. people regard themselves socially different64. The word stratification in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to ________.A.varietyB.divisionC. authorityD. qualification65.British attitudes towards accent _________.A. have a long traditionB. are based on regional statusC. are shared by the AmericansD. have changed in recent years66. What is the main idea of the passage?A. The middle class is expandingB. A person’s accent reflects his classC. Class is a key part of British societyD. Each class has unique characteristics.DMy mind went blank when I saw the gun pointing against the car window as we pulled out of the garage. This can’t be happening to me. Then I felt the gun, cold, against my head, and I heard my friend Jeremy saying, “What do you want? Take my wallet,” but at the time I thought of nothing.I remember being a little annoyed when the gunman pulled me from the car by the hair. I remember the walk to the house --- Jeremy, me, the two men with two guns. I remember the fear and anger in the gunmen’s voices because Jeremy was being slow, and I remember wondering why he was being slow. I did not realize that Jeremy had thrown the keys into the bush. But I remember that sound of the gun hitting Jeremy’s head and the feeling as the man who had hold of my hair released me. And I remember the split second when I realized he was looking at Jeremy, and I remember wondering how far I could run before he pulled the trigger. But I was already running, and upon reaching the car across the street, I didn’t crouch(蹲伏) behind it but screamed instead.I remember thinking there was something ridiculous and illogical about screaming “Help, help!” at eight o’clock on a Tuesday evening in December and changing my plea(恳求) to the more specific “Help, let me in, please let me in!” But the houses were cold, closed, unfriendly, and I ran on until I heard Jeremy’s screams behind me announcing that our attackers had fled. The neighbors who had not opened their doors to us came out with baseball bats and helped Jeremy find his glasses and keys. In a group they were very brave. We waited for the police to come until someone said to someone else that the noodles were getting cold, and I said politely, “Please go and eat. We’re O.K.”I was happy to see them go. They had been talking of stricter sentences for criminals, of bringing back the death penalty(处罚) and how the President is going to clean up the country. I was thinking, they could be saying all of this over my dead body, and I still feel that stiffer sentences wouldn’t change a thing. In a rush all the anger I should have felt for my attackers was directed against these contented people standing in front of their warm, comfortable homes talking about all the guns they were going to buy. What good would guns have been to Jeremy and me?People all over the neighborhood had called to report our screams, and the police turned out in force twenty minutes later. They were ill-tempered about what was, to them, much trouble about nothing. After all, Jeremy was hardlyhurt, and we were hopeless when it came to describing the gunmen. “Typical,” said one policeman when we couldn’t even agree on how tall the men were. Both of us were able to describe the guns in horrifying detail, but the two policemen who stayed to make the report didn’t think that would be much help. The policemen were matter-of-fact about the whole thing. The thin one said, “That was a stupid thing to do, throwing away the keys. When a man has a gun against your head you do what you’re told.” Jeremy looked properly embarrassed. Then the fat policeman came up and the thin one went to look around the outside of the house. “That was the best thing you could have done, throwing away the keys,” he said. “If you had gone into the house with them…” His voice became weaker. “They would have hurt her” --- he twisted his head toward me – “and killed you both.” Jeremy looked happier. “Look,” said the fat policeman kindly, “there’s no right or wrong in the situation. There’s just luck.”All that sleepless night I replayed the moment those black gloves came up to the car window. How long did the whole thing last? Three minutes, five, eight? No matter how many hours of my life I may spend reliving it, I know there is no way to prepare for the next time --- no intelligent response to a gun. The fat cop was right. There’s only luck. The next time I might end up dead. And I’m sure there will be a next time. It can happen anywhere, anytime, to anyone. Security is an illusion(幻觉); there is no safety in locks or in guns. Guns make some people feel safe and some people feel strong, but they’re fooling themselves.67. What most possibly drove the two gunmen away?A. Jeremy's fighting.B.The author's screaming.C.Their neighbour's brave action.D.The police's arrival.68. The author was happy to see the neighbors go because ______.A.she hated to listen to their empty talkB.she did not want to become an object of pityC.she was angered by their being late to come to her helpD.she wanted to be left alone with Jeremy to get over the shock69. The police were rather angry because ______.A.the author was not hurt and gave a false alarmB.they thought it was a case of little importanceC.the author and Jeremy could not tell the police anythingD.the gunmen had already fled when they arrived on the scene70. What the author wants to tell us is that______.A.neighbors are not helpful in moments of difficultyB.the police are not reliable when one is in troubleC.preventing robbers entering your house is the best choiceD.security is impossible as long as people can have guns第四部分任务型阅读请认真阅读下列短文, 并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词。
