Literary style
Frost‟s poems show deep appreciation of natural world and sensibility about the human aspirations. All the images (woods, stars, houses) he uses reflect the poet‟s love for nature and life, his sad experience in life and the influence religion exerted upon western people‟s daily life.
In 1912, at the age of 38, Frost decided to try to make a new start. He sold the farm and used the proceeds to take his family to England, where he became acquainted with the F.S. Flint, Edward Thomas, and Ezra Pound, who called Frost‟s poems “modern georgics(田园诗)". Fortunately he had his first two volumes of verse, A Boy‟s Will 《孩子的意愿》 (for which he

After the First World War a group of new American dramatists emerged, and the American theater ceased to be wholly dependent on the dramatic traditions of Europe. Experimental playwrights, hostile to outworn and timid theatrical convention, created works of tragedy, stark realism, and social protest. Early in the 1920s the most prominent of the new American playwrights, Eugene Gladstone O’Neill, established an international reputation with such plays as The Emperor Jones (1920) and The Haiuction
Waste Land, the most significant American poem of the 20th century, helped to establish a modern tradition of literature rich with learning and allusive thought.

American society. Early in the century Ezra Pound and T. S. Eliot published works that would change the nature of American poetry, but their impact (and that of other modernist writers) on the general reading public was slight. The genteel tradition and popular romanticism still dominated the nation’s literary tastes.

The exact date of Shakespeare’s birth is not known, but his baptism was recorded on April 26,1564,in the parish register of Holy Trinity Church at Stratford-on-Avon. Since it was customary to baptize infants within two or three days of birth, April 23 is regarded as a reasonable birth date. It is also the date on which he died in 1616. Generally, his dramatic career is divided into 4 periods.
Many words and commonly used phrases have been added to everyday English vocabulary through their appearance in Shakespeare’s works.

Fire and Ice
Some say the world will end in fire, Some say in ice.
From what I've tasted of desire, I hold with those who favor fire. But if it had to perish twice,
Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same,
(A Boy’s Will),

➢ Questions
1. How do you explain the meaning of the title of the poem? 2. In what way does the poet express his determination to move on his own way?
