The cultural conflicts in the communications happen inevitably, because Chinese have different thinking mod, life style and behavioral pattern with Hesperian. It prevents the diplomatic activities from implementing smoothly. Table manners are in a vital position in the communication between China and Western countries. People usually show the best images and avoid cultural conflicts during inter-culture communication. Learning and using the right culture etiquette will not only step up our own impression, but also promote the benefit and strife of the business between two countries. As various kinds of differences exist in the cultural background between China and Western countries, people with different culture background have entirely different table manners. This thesis focuses on the differences of table manners between the United States and China, and analyzes the reasons that caused the differences.This thesis attempts to compare the similarities and differences of table manners from the perspective of cross-culture communication between the United States and China. A Comparative Study of Chinese and American Wedding Customs Custom is the great guide of human life and wedding is very important to every one. Wedding days are often considered the most important day of many people’s lives. For this reason alone, throughout the past and into modern day, numerous customs and superstitions have developed around the wedding event, in hopes of creating the perfect day!Chinese traditional marriage customs lost its popularity due to the collapse of feudal marriage custom and its complexity. However, traditional marriage can still be seen in the countryside, despite innovations. Now, traditional marriage custom revives in some places and attracts will-be-couples.In the ancient times, it was very important to follow a basic principle of Three Letters and Six Etiquettes, since they were essential to a marriage.Three letters include Betrothal Letter, Gift Letter and Wedding Letter. Betrothal Letter is the formal document of the engagement, a must in a marriage. Then, a gift letter is necessary, which will be enclosed to the identified girl's family, listing types and quantity of gifts for the wedding once both parties accept the marriage. While the Wedding Letter refers to the document which will be prepared and presented to the bride's family on the day of the wedding to confirm and commemorate the formal acceptance of the bride into the bridegroom's family.Six Etiquettes are Proposing, Birthday matching, Presenting betrothal gifts , Presenting wedding gifts, Picking wedding date, and Wedding ceremony! Proposing: If an unmarried boy's parents identify a girl as their future daughter-in-law, they will find a matchmaker to make the proposal. The matchmaker will formally present his or her client's request to the identified girl's parents.Birthday matching: If the potential bride's parents do not object the marriage, the matchmaker will ask for the girl's birthday and birth-hour record to assure the compatibility of the potential bride and bridegroom. If the couple's birthdays andbirth-hours do not conflict according to astrology, the marriage will step into the next stage. Once there is any conflict, meaning the marriage will bring disasters to theboy's family or the girl's, the proposed marriage stops.Presenting betrothal gifts: Once birthdays match, the bridegroom's family will then arrange the matchmaker to present betrothal gifts, enclosing the betrothal letter, to the bride's family.Presenting wedding gifts: After the betrothal letter and betrothal gifts are accepted, the bridegroom's family will later formally send wedding gifts to the bride's family. Usually, gifts may include tea, lotus seeds, red beans, green beans, red dates, nutmeg, oranges, pomegranate, lily, bridal cakes, coconuts, wine, red hair braid, money box and other stuff, depending on local customs and family wealth.Picking wedding date: An astrologist or astrology book will be consulted to select an auspicious date to hold the wedding ceremony.Wedding ceremony: On the selected day, the bridegroom departures with a troopof escorts and musicians, playing happy music all the way to the bride's home. After the bride is escorted to the bridegroom's home, the wedding ceremony begins.The wedding ceremony is the hottest point. The Chinese ways of celebrating wedding are diversified in view of various conditions in China. Generally speaking, the procedures of Chinese way of wedding celebration include the following steps:The ceremony master of wedding announces the opening of marriage celebration.⌝The chairman of ceremony delivers a congratulatory speech.The witness of marriage reads the marriage certificate to the audience, which includes the parents of bride and bridegroom, relatives, and friends.The bride and bridegroom are led to the family altar, where the couple pays kotows to Heaven and Earth, the family ancestors and parents, and then they bow to each other. ⌝The bride and bridegroom kiss each other and exchange wedding rings.The bride and bridegroom toast the guests in the grand feast to show thanks to their relatives and attendance. Generally they are required to cross their arms to sip the wine and then exchange their cups to gulp down⌝ The guests tease bride and bridegroom at the new wedding chamber. After night falls, the teasing games start. Usually all young men can participate except for the bride's married brothers-in-law. Those funny and silly games will ease the tension, since in ancient times the newlyweds never met each other before the wedding! Most of the games require the shy couple to act like wife and husband. The festive atmosphere also promotes closeness among all the family members and the Community beyond. There also will be other activities conducted by the bridegroom's mother after the roaring laughter fades into the darkness.The day after the wedding, the bride should get up early and fix a brunch for the groom's family. At the dame time, the bride should serve tea to the groom’s parents. These are to show that she is well-nurtured, and qualified to be the groom's wife. Three days after the wedding, the bride will go to visit her parents in her husband's company. The groom will present her family with a roast suckling pig, a symbol of virginity, to indicate the bride's purity. The bride's family will proudly share the pig with relatives and neighbors.There are many wedding superstitions during Chinese traditional wedding.1. At the proposal meeting, the groom's family will present the bride with an alive goose. The bride's family should not kill the goose and eat it because the goose represents the groom. If the goose is quiet when it is turned over to the bride's family, it indicates that the groom has good personality. Otherwise, it indicates the groom is quick-tampered. The bride's family should leave the goose to a pond where it will grow by itself.2. Bride’s friends will try to block the groom from entering the bride's room on the morning of the wedding day. But the friends will have to watch time since an auspicious timing is already chosen for the bride to depart her home.3. When the bride departs her home, and ascends the car, she should change to her formal shoes, thus to indicate that she did not take away even the good luck from herparents.4. When the bride enters the groom's home, the mother-in-law and sister-in-law should not face the door, watching the bride walk in. This is to avoid confrontation in the future.5. Pregnant women and people whose family member just passed away should not participate in the wedding ceremony, or to touch the newlyweds' clothing or anything in the new home.Contrary to Chinese wedding customs, the American wedding is much simpler!It still begins with the proposal, but the bridegroom-will-be will do the proposal by him! He will knee on one leg with a ring, and ask whether the bride marry him!In western countries, wedding ceremony is usually conducted in a church while Chinese people hold it in hotels or at restaurants. The procedures of western wedding ceremony are as following:The father of bride hands over his daughter to the bridegroom.The bridegroom and the bride walk down the aisle arms in arms with the background wedding music, the flower girl spreads confetti on the bride and bridegroom.The priest places a Bible in front of the couple who is supposed to make wedding vows in front of the guests. If no objection, the priest announces the couple becomes wife and husband legally.The bridegroom and the bride exchange wedding rings and kiss each other.The bridegroom and the bride receive congratulations from parents and friends. There will be a wedding banquets party which is sponsored by the bride’s parents to show thanks to their relatives and friends.The new couple goes to spend their honeymoon after the wedding. The honeymoon always is romantic and the couple can enjoy it totally.There were some special customs in the American wedding. A very common custom still honored today is in reference to a time-old saying, something old, and something new, something borrowed, something blue, and a silver sixpence inside your shoe. So old is this that tracing it back to its origination is nearly impossible. Some contribute it to Victorian times. Weddings have historically taken place in higher numbers during the month of June than any other month of the year. This lies to the old belief that it was lucky to be married on the day of the full moon. A wedding on the June day of a full moon was considered to be the most prosperous and long lasting union of all. The people throw rice at weddings. Why? It shows that the guests wish fertility, prosperity, and long lasting happiness for the newly married couple.Many superstitions also exist for right after the wedding to start the marriage off right. The new couple should borrow a coffeepot for the first three months, then purchase one together. A new broom and frying pan is needed to start the couple off on a road to happiness, never start off a marriage with these two items old, or already used.
