Unit 4 Astronomy the science of the starsⅠ.阅读理解ANASA's New Horizons probe (宇宙探测器) flew by Pluto (冥王星) this morning, sending back history's first up-close looks at the vast freezing-cold world. Closest approach came at 7:49 am EDT. To celebrate, NASA gave out the latest photo of Pluto. It showed a reddish world with an amazing heart-shaped feature on its surface. After today's close encounter, all the nine solar system's traditionally recognized planets have now been visited by a spaceship—a huge project begun in 1962 when NASA's Mariner 2 probe flew past Venus, a planet in the solar system. More than 1,200 scientists, NASA guests and important persons, including 200 reporters, watched the flyby live at New Horizons' mission control center. That close encounter has been a long time coming. The $723 million New Horizons mission launched in January 2006 but began taking shape in 1989. “New Horizons is ‘a capstone mission’,” Glen Fountain, mission project manager told Space. com. “It is the first completi on of the observations of our solar system. It is giving us a new idea about how we human beings fit into the universe.”“New Horizons faced a crazy number of challenges,” Stern, a driving force behind New Horizons said, “So many people stuck with this for so long. They got knocked down; they stood up. They got knocked down again; they stood up again.”In a coincidence, today's close approach falls on the 50th anniversary of the first flyby of Mars, another planet, which was completed by NASA's Mariner 4 spaceship. There are no longer nine officially recognized planets, of course. The International Astronomical Union regarded Pluto as “a dwarf planet” in 2006, in a decision that remains controversial (有争议的) today.篇章导读:本文是一篇新闻报道类文章,主要讲述了科学家对太阳系行星冥王星的最新探测成果。

BGot big plans for Friday night? That's OK, we don't either.Guess we'll all have to make do by watching the celestial (天空的) show that will take place that night.First, there will be a full moon. That's always fun, but this one will be a little more special. It's known as a “snow moon”. The name comes from the fact that the heaviest snows usually fall during February, according to The Old Farmer's Almanac. But if that's not special enough, there's also an eclipse (月食) that night. It'll be a penumbral lunar eclipse, meaning it's a partial eclipse that leaves sections of the moon darkened by the earth's shadow. No, it won't be as spectacular as those “blood moon” eclipses. It'll be subtler. The leve l of darkness it reaches during the eclipse may or may not be apparent; it just depends on where you are when you view it.In North America, the eclipse begins at 5:34 pm ET and ends at 9:53 pm ET, according to the astronomy website EarthSky. The eclipse will be at its height around 7:44 pm ET.If that's still not enough, let's throw in a comet (彗星) to the night's festivities.Comet 45P (it has a much longer name, but we won't burden you with it here) is visible as it flies by the earth. The comet will get within 7.4 million miles of the planet as it makes its closest approach this weekend, according to Universe Today.Comet 45P will be most visible a couple of hours after the eclipse, so look to the skies again around 3 am ET Saturday and find the greenishblue light with a tail. And don't forget, a total bigtime solar eclipse will streak across the United States on August 21st.篇章导读:本文是一篇说明文,介绍了星期五晚上将会发生的天文现象。

4.According to the text, what can be viewed on Friday night?A.A blood moon. B.A total solar eclipse.C.A partial lunar eclipse. D.A comet without a tail.答案:C 细节理解题。

手惰市安逸阳光实验学校Unit 4 Body languageⅠ.阅读理解(建议用时16′)A[2017·湖南岳阳阶段考试]Very mobile ears help many animals direct their attention to the rustle of a possible attacker W1. Researchers say these mobile ears have become a useful communication tool. Their studies of animal behaviour build up P1 a picture of how communication and social skills developed.“We're interested in how they communicate,” said lead rese archer Jennifer Wathan. “And being sensitive to what another individual is thinking is a fundamental W2 skill from which other more complex skills develop.”Ms Wathan and her colleague Prof Karen McComb set up a behavioural experiment where 72 individual horses had to use visual clues from another horse in order to choose where to feed. They led each horse to a point where it had to select one of two buckets. On a wall behind this Decisionmaking spot was a lifesized photograph of a horse's head facing either to left or right. In some of the trials W3, the horses' ears or eyes were covered. If the ears and eyes of the horse in the picture were visible W4, the horses being tested would choose the bucket towards which its gaze and its ears were directed. If the horse in the picture had either its eyes or its ears covered, the horse being tested would just choose a feed bucket at random P2.Like many mammals that are hunted by predators (捕食者), horses can rotate (旋转) their ears through almost 180 degrees—but Ms Wathan said that in our “humancentric” view of the world, we had overlooked W5 the importance of these very mobile ears in animal communication.“It seems there's something in the visual clues—from both the eyes and the ears—that are really important,” she told BBC News. “Horses have quite rich social lives and relationships with other horses, so they're a good species to look at this in.” And the more we look at communication across different species, the more we can consider what might have promoted the evolution of sophisticated communication and social skills.

阅读理解(建议用时16′)[xx·复旦附中高三检测]Space exploration has always been the province W1 of dreamers: The human imagination readily soars while human ingenuity (创造力) struggles to follow. A Voyage to the Moon, often cited as the first science fiction story, was written by Cyrano de Bergerac in 1649. Cyrano was dead and buried for a good three centuries before the first manned rockets started to fly.In 1961, when President Kennedy declared that America would send a man to the moon by the decade's end, those words, too, had a dreamlike quality. They resonated with optimism and ambition in much the same way as the most famous dream speech of all, delivered W2 by Martin Luther King Jr. two years later. By the end of the decade, both visions had yielded concrete results and transformed American society. And yet in many ways the two dreams ended up at odds with each other. The fight for racial and economic equality is intensely pragmatic (讲求实用的) and immediate in its impact. The urge to explore space is just the opposite. It is figuratively and literally otherworldly in its aims. When the dust settled, the space dreamers lost out. There was no grand follow -up to the Apollo missions. The technologically promised W3 space shuttle program has just e to an end P1, with no successor. The perpetual argument is that funds are tight, that we have more pressing problems here on Earth. Amid the current concerns about the federal deficit, reaching toward the stars seems a dispensable luxury—as if saving one-thousandth of a single year's budget would solve our problems. But human ingenuity struggles on. NASA is developing a series of robotic probes that will get the most bang from a buck. They will serve as modern Magellans, mapping out the solar system for whatever explorers follow, whether man or machine. On the flip side, panies like Virgin Galactic are plotting a bottom-up assault on the space dream by making it a reality to the public. Private spaceflight could lie within reach of rich civilians W4 in a few years. Another decade or two and it could go mainstream. The space dreamers end up benefiting all of us-not just because of the way they expand human knowledge, or because of the spin-off technologies they produce, but because the two types of dreams feed_off each other. Both Martin Luther King and John Kennedy appealed to P2 the idea that humans can transcend what were once considered inherent limitations. Today we face seeming challenges in energy, the environment, health care. Tomorrow we will transcend these as well, and the dreamers will deserve a lot of the credit W5. The more evidence we collect that our species is capable of greatness, the more we will actually achieve it.篇章导读:本文是一篇议论文。

Unit 4 Making the newsⅠ.阅读理解A[2017·全国卷Ⅲ]Minutes after the last movie ended yesterday at the Plaza Theater, employees were busy sweeping up popcorns and gathering coke cups. It was a scene that had been repeated many times in the theater's 75year h istory. This time, however, the cleanup was a little different. As one group of workers carried out the rubbish, another group began removing seats and other theater equipment in preparation for the building's end.The film classic The Last Picture Show was the last movie shown in the old theater. Though the movie is 30 years old, most of the 250 seats were filled with tearyeyed audience wanting to say goodbye to the old building. Theater owner Ed Bradford said he chose the movie because it seemed appropriate. The movie is set in a small town where the only movie theater is preparing to close down.Bradford said that large modern theaters in the city made it impossible for the Plaza to compete. He added that the theater's location (位置) was also a reason. “This used to be the center of town,” he said. “Now the area is mostly office buildings and warehouses.”Last week some city officials suggested the city might be interested in turning the old theater into a museum and public meeting place. However, these plans were abandoned because of financial problems. Bradford sold the building and land to a local development firm, which plans to build a shopping complex on the land where the theater is located. The theater audience said goodbye as Bradford lockedthe doors for the last time. After 75 years the Plaza Theater had shown its last movie. The theater will be missed.篇章导读:本文是一篇记叙文。

Unit 4 EarthquakesⅠ.阅读理解ALast Thursday, Michael and Linda stood behind large food trucks distributing meals to 4,000 homeless people for their wedding reception in the border town of Kilis. The couple had decided that instead of hosting their friends and family for a traditional feast reception, they would feed the victims from an earthquakestricken area. The idea came from the bridegroom's father, Ted, who volunteers for a Turkish relief organization. For the past few years, the organization has distributed daily meals to thousands of people who've suffered from natural disasters. He approached a representative of the organization and suggested that the family cover part of the costs of feeding them for the day. Then he told his son, who was surprised by the suggestion, but soon won over. When he told that to the bride, she was really shocked but finally accepted because in southeastern Turkey there is a real culture of sharing with people in need. They love to share their food, their table and everything they have. And afterwards she was quite amazed about it. So, they arrived at the distribution center on Thursday to spend the day serving food and taking photographs with their grateful recipients (接受者).On Tuesday evening, the newly married couple were still pleased with their decision to quit a personal celebration for one with a greater good. “It's like sharing a dinner with your friends and family who have this kind of thing on a daily basis or sharing something with people who don't even have the most basic things,” Michael said. “Hopefully, this will also give the start for other wedding dinners to be held here with our brothers and sisters in need.”篇章导读:本文是一篇记叙文。
