第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

阅读下列短文,从每所给的(A、B、C、D)四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

A

When I asked my mother-in-law to select which meals she’d like me to order from the home-delivery menu, she only chose the ones her husband would like. This goes way beyond politeness. She is actually feeling uncomfortable voicing what she wants. She developed the main symptom (症状,表现)of Asker's Syndrome that one's unable to ask for what one wants.

It's not just older women who have this problem. Asker's Syndrome can strike the young. I have single friends who won't ask a man out on a date because they fear being considered too " forward". My five-year-old daughter Violet is showing the early stage of Asker's Syndrome. She's learned that women don't ask, but rather drop hints. She'll say, "Remember last Sunday afternoon we went to the park?" rather than "Can we go to the park?"

Apart from women and girls' problematic relationship with appetite, food and dating, it's widely reported that women are less likely than men to ask for pay rises and promotions. Instead, they withdraw, hoping that somebody else will decide they are worthy and make them promoted.

No doubt, many women develop Asker's Syndrome as a defensive measure because

they've been labeled as (被认为) rude for simply asking for what they want. But in the long term, choosing not to express our desires doesn't serve us well.

It's time to cure ourselves and our girls of Asker's Syndrome. I don't want to raise a future "mother" who denies her wish for food, power and success and anything else. So I now insist that my daughter ask for what she wants directly.

For women in our culture, asking is a skill that we need to learn and practice. And if we all do it, then women asking will become normal.

I know that sometimes, you get the sense from TV that you can be successful without any hard work---that your ticket to success is through basketball or being a reality TV star, when chances are, you’re not going to be any of those things. But the truth is, being successful is hard. And you won’t necessarily succeed at everything the first time you try.

That’s OK. Some of the most successful people in the world are the ones who’ve had the most failures. JK Rowling’s first Harry Potter book was rejected twelve times before it was

finally published. Michael Jordan was cut from his high school basketball team. But he once said, “I have failed over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”

These people succeeded because they understand that you can’t let your failures define you----you have to let them teach you. You have to let them show you what to do differently next time. If you get in trouble, that doesn’t mean you’re a troublemaker. It means you need to try harder to behave. If you get a bad grade, that doesn’t mean you’re stupid. It just means you need to spend more time studying

No one’s born being good at things. You become good at things through hard work. You don’t hit every note the first time you sing a song. You’ve got to practice. It’s the same with your schoolwork. You might have to do a math problem a few times before you get it right, or do a few drafts of a paper before it’s good enough to hand in.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. Asking for help isn’t a sign of weakness. It’s a sign of strength. It shows you have the courage to admit when you don’t’know something, and to learn something new. So find an adult you trust and ask them to help you stay on track to meet your goals.

And even when you’re struggling, even when you’re discouraged, and you feel like other people have given up on you—don’t ever give up on yourself. The story of America isn’t about people who quit when things_____. It’s about people who kept going, who tried harder, and who loved their country too much to do anything less than their best.

29. In the second paragraph, the writer uses Michael Jordan’s words in order to show_____.

A. all of those great people have failed many times before they are successful.

B. failures absolutely lead you to one success after another

C. it is not easy for people to become successful

D. it is impossible for great people to become successful without failures

30. Which of the following phrases can be used to fill in the blank in the last paragraph according to the context?

A. went well

B. got better

C. went mad

D. got tough

31. Which of the following can be used as the title of the passage?

A. Still waters fun deep

B. No cross, no crown

C. Practice makes perfect

D. Spare the rod, spoil the child

32. The writer holds the view that________.

A. It is a good idea to turn to a reliable adult for help when in trouble

B. To become a reality TV star, you have to go through a lot of hard work

C. JK Rowling is not good at writing at all

D. If you fail, you have to do your work differently next time

D

Scientists in Argentina have created the world’s first cow with two human genes that will enable it to produce human-like milk.

第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。

What makes one person more intelligent(聪明)than another? What makes one person a genius, like Albert Einstein, and another person a fool? Are people born intelligent or stupid, or is intelligence the result of where and how you live? 36

We know, however, that just being born with a good mind is not enough. In some ways, the mind is like a leg or an arm muscle(肌肉). 37 Mental exercise is particularly important for young children. Many experts think that parents should play with their children more often and give them problems to think about, 38 If, on the other hand, children are left alone a great deal with nothing to do, they are more likely to become dull and unintelligent.

39 According to some experts, if parents are always telling a child that he or she is a fool or an idiot, then the child is more likely to keep doing silly and foolish things. So it is probably better for parents to say very positive things to their children, such as “That was a very clever thing you did.”or “ 40 .”

A. A healthy body contributes to one’s intelligence

B. Parents should also be careful about what they say to young children

C. What people want to express is like this
