Choose the one that you think is the best answer.Mark your answers on your answer sheet.AA twenty-year-old immigrant,Levi Strauss, came to the United States in 1850 to seek his fortune in the gold fields. But strangely enough, this man made his fortune on heavy canvas that he found suitable for working clothes. Strauss's jeans were particularly good for prospectors and cowboys. In the early days of jeans, this man couldn't have guessed that his pants, made only for rough work, would become so popular at all levels of society. Yes,this is a fact:jeans have become fashionable in our society. Furthermore, these pants have come to symbolize changes in social attitude. In the last decade or two we have seen movements toward equality as well as defiance of authority. Jeans, now worn by everybody, can be said to symbolize these changes for the better. In the past, only men wore jeans, and these men were at the bottom—socially and economically. Jeans were worn by truck drivers, farm and factory workers. Today, jeans no longer are looked down upon. They are worn by both men and women,by both skilled and unskilled workers,by both employees and employers. This common way of dressing symbolizes respect for individuality,no matter what your occupation or sex. In the fight against authority, young people have been the leaders. So it is natural that teenagers would defy parents and school administrators over the right to wear jeans to class and win. Jeans are the typical dress of civil rights marchers, fans at rock concerts,“hippies” returning to nature, and serious college students.Because everyone can be comfortable in them, the blue jeans invented for the use of workers are now accepted almost anywhere, anytime. This is true not only in the United States, but in many other countries in the world. I strongly agree with the following statement:“Old or new, glorified or plain, jeans are likely to be around for a long time to come. Already they have succeeded where statesmanship has failed. Although unable tospeak the same language, the inhabitants of this embattled planet have at least agreed to wear the same pants.”81. Jeans, originally designed by Levi Strauss,.A. have become a symbol of the fashionable classB. have come to symbolize changes in social attitudeC. are suitable wear for rough work onlyD. are no longer so popular as they used to be82. What is implied but not directly stated in the passage is that.A. young people have been the leaders in the fight against authorityB. today, jeans are no longer looked down uponC. jeans are the typical dress of civil rights marchersD. formerly students were not allowed to wear jeans to class83. The author is of the opinion that.A. jeans are likely to be a short-lived fashionB. jeans are popular only in the United StatesC. jeans are likely to be popular for a long time to comeD. jeans are no longer fashionable84. The last two sentences imply that.A. statesmen in the world are less competent than jeansB. the inhabitants of the world should speak the same languageC. statesmen have failed to reach agreement on many major issues of the worldD. jeans will help statesmen to reach agreement on some world issuesBStudies of children‟s acquisition of language suggest that the faculty of language includes an inborn knowledge of the formal principles of language structure,a knowledge that depends on generically determined portions of (usually) that left cerebral (大脑的) hemisphere.Although it is well established that the left hemisphere is specialized for language, one cannot say that language is “located” in this or that p art of the hemisphere. What is known is that language discorders are the results of lesions (损伤) in the left hemisphere. Disorders of language resulting from damage to the brain are called aphasias (失语症).The anterior(前面的)portion of the “language area” is termed Broca‟s area. Lesions in this area interfere with the motor(运动原)and articulatory aspects of language.Speech is slow, labored, grammatically incorrect, and telegraphic;in extreme cases,it may be impossible to carry out.Writing is likewise severely prehension of the spoken or written word, however, may be unimpaired or nearly so.(It is interesting to note that under emotional stress,a patient with Broca‟s aphasia may be temporarily fluent.)Because Broca‟s area is close to the motor cortex(脑皮层),if the former is damaged, the latter is often damaged simultaneously.Hence, such patients often suffer form weakness or paralysis of the right side of the body.Similar lesions in the right hemisphere will cause a left-sided weakness of paralysis but will have no effect on language.Damage to the posterior (后面的) portion of the “language area,” especially to Wernick‟sarea, results in a loss of comprehension of the spoken word and often of the written word. The patient‟s native language is now like a forei gn language. In addition, the patient‟s speech is rapid and well-articulated,but without meaning. Writing is defective, and words that are heard cannot be repeated, although hearing itself is completely normal. Similar lesions in the right hemisphere usually have no effect on language.Injuries to the “language area” in children result in severe aphasias, but the development of language mechanism in the right hemisphere can often compensate for them to an extraordinary degree. This potential function of the right hemisphere is probably normally suppressed by the left hemisphere. In adults, aphasias from similar lesions are often permanent.85.The author is primarily concerned with .A. describing the process of language acquisitionB. explaining potential treatment of language defectsC. showing the importance of the left hemisphere of the brain to language mechanismsD. depicting various means of diagnosing language defects86.Unlike a patient with Wernicke‟s aphasia,a patient with Broca‟s a phasia can .A. comprehend written but not spoken languageB. hear and read with comprehensionC. speak articulately and also comprehend spoken languageD. write and speak readily and coherently87.According to the passage, which of the following statements about the righthemisphere of the brain is accurate?A. It has the potential to serve as a “language area”.B. It controls the ability to comprehend but not the ability to speak a languageC. If it is damaged, gross motor control of the right side of the body may be affected.D. It is the right where Wernick‟s area is located.88.It can be inferred that aphasias in adults often result in permanent damage because .A. much memory is lostB. adults have more trouble learning a foreign languageC. the right hemisphere is no longer as adaptable as it once was.D. brain cells in adults are especially vulnerable to infection89.It can be inferred that the author bases his description on .A. clinical studies of instances of damage to the brainB. studies of language development in children without brain damageC. microscopic examination of the brain structureD. examples of the integration of the left and right hemispheresTEXT CFor millions of years before the appearance of the electric light, shift work,all-night cable TV and the Internet,Earth‟s creatures evolved on a planet with predictable and reassuring 24-hour rhythms. Our biological clocks are set for this daily cycle.Simply put,our bodies want to sleep at night and be awake during the day. Most women and men need between eight and eight and a half hours of sleep a night to function properly throughout theirlives.(Contrary to popular belief, humans don‟t need less sleep as they age.)But on average,Americans sleep only about seven and a half hours per night,a marked drop from the nine hours day averaged in 1910.what‟s worse, nearly one third of all Americans get less than six hours of sleep on a typical work night. For most people, that‟s not nearly enough.Finding ways to get more and better sleep can be a challenge. Scientists have identified more than 80 different sleep disorders. Some sleeping disorders are generic. But many problems are caused by staying up late and sleeping in,by traveling frequently between time zones or by working nights. Dr. James. F. Jones at National Jewish Medical and Research Center in Denver says that sleep disorders are often diagnosed at other discomforts. About one third of the patients referred to him with possible chronic fatigue syndrome actually have treatable sleep disorders. “Before we do anything else,we look at their sleep,” Jones says.Sleep experts say that most people would benefit from a good look at their sleep patterns,“My motto (座右铭) is …sleep defensively‟,” says Mary Carskadon of Brown University. She says people need to carve out sufficient time to sleep, even if it means giving up other things. Sleep routines-like going to bed and getting up at the same time every day-are important. Pre-bedtime activities also make a difference. As with Elsneer, who used to suffer from sleeplessness,a few lifestyle change-avoiding stimulants and late meals, exercising hours before bedtime, relaxing with a hot bath—yield better sleep.90.What is TRUE of human sleep?A. Most people need less sleep when grow older.B. Most people need seven and a half hours of sleep every night.C. On average, people in the U. S. today sleep less per night than they used to.D. For most people, less than six hours of sleep on a typical work night is enough.91.For our bodies to function properly,we should.A. sleep for at least eight hours per nightB. believe that we need less sleep as we ageC. adjust our activities to the new inventionsD. be able to predict the rhythms of our biological clocks92.According to the author, many sleeping disorders are caused by .A. other diseasesB. pre-bedtime exercisesC. improper sleep patternsD. Chronic fatigue syndrome93.Which of the following measures can help you sleep better?A. Staying up late.B. Taking a hot bath.C. Having late meals.D. Traveling between time zones.94.“Sleep defensively” means that .A. people should go to a doctor and have their problems diagnosedB. people should exercise immediately before going to bed every nightC. people should sacrifice other things to get enough sleep if necessary.D. People should give up going to bed and going up at the same every day.TEXT DDThe word laser was coined as an acronym for Light Amplification by the Stimulated Emission of Radiation. Ordinary light, from the Sun or a light bulb,is emitted spontaneously, when atoms or molecules get rid of excess energy by themselves, without any outside intervention. Stimulated emission is different because it occurs when an atom or molecule holding onto excess energy has been stimulated to emit it as light.Albert Einstein was the first to suggest the existence of stimulated emission in a paper published in 1917. However, for many years physicists thought that atoms and molecules always were much more likely to emit light spontaneously and that stimulated emission thus always would be much weaker. It was not until after the Second World War that physicists began trying to make stimulated emission dominate. They sought ways by which one atom or molecule could stimulate many others to emit light, amplifying it to much higher powers. The first to succeed was Charles H. Townes, then at Columbia University in New York. Instead of working with light, however,he worked with microwaves, which have a much longer wavelength, and built a device he called a “maser”,for Microwave Amplification by the Stimulated Emission of Radiation. Although he thought of the key idea in 1951,the first maser was not completed until a couple of years later. Before long, many other physicists were building masers and trying to discover how to produce stimulated mission at even shorter wavelengths. The key concepts emerged about 1957. Townes and Arthur Schawlow, then at Bell Telephone Laboratories, wrote a long paper outlining the conditions needed to amplify stimulated emission of visible light waves. At about the same time, similar ideas crystallized in the mind of Gordon Gould, then a 37-year-old graduate student at Columbia, who wrote them down in a series of notebooks. Townes and Schawlow published their ideas in a scientific journal,Physical Review Letters, but Gould filed a patent application. Some decades later, people still argue about who deserves the credit for the concept of the laser.95.Which of the following statements best describes a laser?A.A device for stimulating atoms and molecules to emit light.B.An atom in a high-energy state.C.A technique for destroying atoms or molecules.D.An instrument for measuring light waves.96.Why was Townes' early work with stimulated emission done with microwaves?A.He was not concerned with light amplification.B.It was easier to work with longer wavelengths.C.His partner Schawlow had already begun work on the laser.D.The laser had already been developed.97.In his research at Columbia University,Charles Townes worked with all of the following EXCEPT .A.stimulated emissionB.microwavesC.light amplificationD.a maser98.In approximately what year was the first maser built?A.1917.B.1951.C.1953.D.1957.99.Why do people still argue about who deserves the credit for the concept of the laser?A. The researchers' notebooks were lost.B. Several people were developing the idea at the same time.C .No one claimed credit for the development until recently.D. The work is still incomplete.100.According to the passage,Townes,Arthur Schawlow, and Gordon Gould didn't .A. come up with similar ideas about laserB. write their ideas downC. work at Columbia UniversityD. do their share for the study of the laserTEXT EYou may not have thought of it just this way, but the letter you write is part of you, and expression of your personality. Therefore to write letters that are mere patterns of form is to present a colorless personality.Letters, by their very nature, are too individual to be standardized. A letter may be absolutely perfect according to the standards of good taste and good form; but unless it also expresses something of the writer's personality, it is not a good letter. In other words, don't be satisfied to write letters that are just correct and nothing more. Try to write letters that are correct for you... letters that are warm and alive with reflections of your own personality. And if this sounds like a platitude (陈词滥调), stop for a moment and think back over your recent correspondence. What was the most interesting letter you received? Was it a letter anyone could have written? Or was it a letter that instantly “came alive” as you read it—that brought the personality of the sender right into the room with you. as though you were face to face, listening instead of reading? The fault with too many letters, today as in the past—the reason so many letters are dull and lifeless, and often fail to accomplish the purpose for which they are written is simply this: They sound exactly like the letters everyone else writes. They are neither exciting to receive nor stimulating to read.98. What does the author mean by saying “the letter you write is part of you”?A. Writing letters plays an important part in your life.B. When you write letters, you should be careful about what to write.C. People can see your personality from the letters you write.D. You should write good letters.99. What does the author want to explain in the fourth paragraph?A. A good letter presents one's personality.B. His opinion is a platitude.C. Letter-writing is interesting.D. Talking face to face is a better way to communicate than writing letters.100. The best title for the passage is___________.A. Letter WritingB. Personality in Letter WritingC. To Write Interesting LettersD. To Write Correct LettersWRITING[45 MIN.]COMPOSITION[35 MIN.]Write on ANSWER SHEET TWO a composition of 200 words on the following topic:Having a Company before GraduationYou are to write in three parts. In the first part state what you think is the best way.In the second part, support your view with one or two reasons. In the last part, bring what you have written to a natural conclusion or summary. They drew simple pictures or signs to represent things and ideas, and also to represent the sounds of their language. The signs these people used became a kind of alphabet. The Egyptians used to record information and to tell stories by putting picture writing and pictures together. When an important person died, scenes and stories from his life were painted and carved on the walls of the place where he was buried. Some of these pictures are like modern comic strip stories. It has been said that Egypt is the home of the comic strip. But, for the Egyptians, pictures still had magic power. So they did not try to make their way of writing simple. The ordinary people could not understand it. By the year 1,000 BC, people who lived in the area around the Mediterranean Sea had developed a simpler system of writing. The signs they used were very easy to write, and there were fewer of them than in the Egyptian system. This was because each sign, or letter, represented only one sound in their language. The Greeks developed this system and formed the letters of the Greek alphabet. The Romans copied the idea, and the Roman alphabet is now used all over the world. These days, we can write down a story, or record information, without using pictures. But we still need pictures of all kinds: drawing, photographs, signs and diagrams. We find themeverywhere: in books and newspapers, in the street, and on the walls of the places where we live and work. Pictures help us to understand and remember things more easily, and they can makea story much more interesting.1. Choose the one that you think is the correct answer.TEXT A People have been painting pictures for at least 30,000 years. The earliest pictures were painted by people who hunted animals. They used to paint pictures of the animals they wanted to catch and kill. Pictures of this kind have been found on the walls of caves in France and Spain. No one knows why they were painted there. Perhaps the painters thought that their pictures would help them to catch these animals. Or perhaps human beings have always wanted to tell stories to pictures. About 5,000 years ago the Egyptians and other people in the Near East began to use pictures as a kind of writing. They drew simple pictures or signs to represent things and ideas, and also to represent the sounds of their language. The signs these people used became a kind of alphabet. The Egyptians used to record information and to tell stories by putting picture-writing and pictures together. When an important person died, scenes and stories from his life were painted and carved on the walls of the place where he was buried. Some of these pictures are like modern comic-strip stories. It has been said that Egypt is the home of the comic strip. But, for the Egyptians, pictures still had magic power. So they did not try to make their way of writing simple. The ordinary people could not understand it. By the year 1000 BC, people who lived in the area around the Mediterranean Sea had developed a simpler system of writing. The signs they used were very easy to write, and there were fewer of tem than in the Egyptian system. This was because each sign, or letter, represented only one sound in their language. The Greeks developed this system and formed the letters of the Greek alphabet. The Romans copied the idea, and the Roman alphabet is now used all over the world. These days we can write down a story, or record information, without using pictures. But we still need pictures of all kinds: drawings, photographs, signs and diagrams. We find them everywhere: in books and newspapers, in the street, and on the walls of the places where we live and work. Pictures help us to understand and remember things more easily, and they can make a story much more interesting.66. Pictures of animals were painted on the walls of caves in France and Spain because _____.A) the hunters wanted to see the picturesB) the painters were animal loversC) the painters wanted to show imaginationD) the pictures were thought to be helpful67. The Greek alphabet was simpler than the Egyptian system for all the following reasons EXCEPT that _____.A) the former was easy to writeB) there were fewer signs in the formerC) the former was easy to pronounceD) each sign stood for only one sound68. Which of the following statements is TRUE?A) The Egyptian signs later became a particular alphabet.B) The Egyptians liked to write comic-strip stories.C) The Roman alphabet was developed from the Egyptian one.D) The Greeks copied their writing system from the Egyptians.69. In the last paragraph, the author thinks that pictures _____.A) should be made comprehensibleB) should be made interestingC) are of much use in our lifeD) are disappearing from our lifeTEXT B Human beings have used tools for a very long time. In some parts of the world you can still find tools that people used more than two million years ago. They made these tools by hitting one stone against another. In this way they broke off pieces from one of the stones. These chips of stone were usually sharp on one side. People used them for cutting meat and skin from dead animals, and also for making other tools out of wood. Human beings needed to use tools because they did not have sharp teeth like other meat-eating animals, such as lions and tigers. Tools helped people to get food more easily. Working with tools also helped to develop human intelligence. The human brain grew bigger, and human beings began to invent more and more tools and machines. The stone chip was one of the first tools that people used, and perhaps it is the most important. Some scientists say that it was the key to success of mankind. Since 1960 a new kind of tool has appeared. This is the silicon chip —— a little chip silicon crystal. It is smaller than a finger-nail, but it can store more than a million "bits" of information. It is an electronic brain. Every year these chips get cleverer, but their size gets smaller, and their cost gets less. They are used in watches, calculators and intelligent machines that we can use in many ways. In the future we will not need to work with tools in the old way. Machines will do everything for us. They will even talk and play games with us. People will have plenty of spare time. But what will they do with it? Human beings used stone chips for more than two million years, but human life changed very little in that time. We have used silicon chips for only a few years, but life is changing faster every day. What will life be like twenty years from now? What will the world be like two million years from now?70. The stone chip is thought to be the most important tool because it _____.A) was one of the first toolsB) developed human capabilitiesC) led to the invention of machinesD) was crucial to the development of mankind71. At the end of the passage the author seems to suggest that life in future is _____.A) disastrousB) unpredictableC) excitingD) colorfulTEXT C A century ago in the United States, when an individual brought suit against a company, public opinion tended to protect that company. But perhaps this phenomenon was most striking in the case of the railroads. Nearly half of all negligence cases decided through 1896 involved railroads. And the railroads usually won. Most of the cases were decided in sate courts, when the railroads had the climate of the times on their sides. Government supported the railroad industry; the progress railroads represented was not to be slowed down by requiring them often to pay damages to those unlucky enough to be hurt working for them. Court decisions always went against railroad workers. A Mr. Farwell, an engineer, lost his right hand when a switchmans negligence ran his engine off the track. The court reasoned that since Farwell had taken the job of an engineer voluntarily at good pay, he had accepted the risk. Therefore the accident, though avoidable had the switchmen acted carefully, was a "pure accident". In effect a railroad could never be held responsible for injury to one employee caused by the mistake of another. In one case where a Pennsylvania Railroad worker had started a fire at a warehouse and the fire had spreadseveral blocks, causing widespread damage, a jury found the company responsible for all the damage. But the court overturned the jurys decision because it argued that the railroads negligence was the immediate cause of damage only to the nearest buildings. Beyond them the connection was too remote to consider. As the century wore on, public sentiment began to turn against the railroads —— against their economic and political power and high fares as well as against their callousness toward individuals.72. Which of the following is NOT true in Farwell's case?A) Farwell was injured because he negligently ran his engine off the track.B) Farwell would not have been injured if the switchman had been more careful.C) The court argued that the victim had accepted the risk since he had willingly taken his job.D) The court decided that the railroad should not be held responsible.73. What must have happened after the fire case was settled in court?A) The railroad compensated for the damage to the immediate buildings.B) The railroad compensated for all the damage by the fire.C) The railroad paid nothing for the damaged building.D) The railroad worker paid for the property damage himself.74. The following aroused public resentment EXCEPT _____.A) political powerB) high faresC) economic lossD) indifference75. What does the passage mainly discuss?A) Railroad oppressing individuals in the US.B) History of the US railroads.C) Railroad workers' working rights.D) Law cases concerning the railroads.TEXT D Hawaiis native minority is demanding a greater degree of sovereignty over its own affairs. But much of the archipelagos political establishment, which includes the White Americans who dominated until the second world war and people of Japanese, Chinese and Filipino origins, is opposed to the idea. The islands were annexed by the US in 1898 and since then Hawaiis native peoples have fared worse than any of its other ethnic groups. They make up over 60 percent of the states homeless, suffer higher levels of unemployment and their life span is five years less than the average Hawaiians. They are the only major US native group without some degree of autonomy. But a sovereignty advisory committee set up by Hawaiis first native governor, Joahn Waihee, has given the natives cause a major boost by recommending that the Hawaiian natives decide by themselves whether to re-establish a sovereign Hawaiian nation. However, the Hawaiian natives are not united in their demands. Some just want greater autonomy within the state —— as enjoyed by many American Indian natives over matters such as education. This is a position supported by the Office of Hawaiian Affairs (OHA), a state agency set up in 1978 to represent the natives interests and which has now become the moderate face of the native sovereignty movement. More ambitious is the Ka Lahui group, which declared itself a new nation in 1987 and wants full, official independence from the US. But if Hawaiian natives are given greater autonomy, it is far from clear how many people this will apply to. The state authorities only count as native those people with more than 50 percent Hawaiian blood. Native demands are not just based on politicalgrievances, though. They also want their claim on 660,000 hectares of Hawaiian crown land to be accepted. it is on this issue that native groups are facing most opposition from the state authorities. In 1933, the state government paid the OHA US 136 million in back rent on the crown land and many officials say that by accepting this payment the agency has given up its claims to legally own the land. The OHA has vigorously disputed this.76. Hawaii's native minority refers to _____.A) Hawaii's ethnic groupsB) people of Filipino originC) the Ka Lahui groupD) people with 50% Hawaiian blood77. Which of the following statements is true of the Hawaiian natives?A) Sixty percent of them are homeless or unemployed.B) their life span is 5 years shorter than average Americans.C) Their life is worse than that of other ethnic groups in Hawaii.D) They are the only native group without sovereignty.78. Which of the following is NOT true of John Waihee?A) He is Hawaii's first native governor.B) He has set up a sovereignty advisory committee.C) He suggested the native people decide for themselves.D) He is leading the local independence movement.79. Which of the following groups holds a less radical attitude on the matter of sovereignty?A) American Indian natives.B) Office of Hawaiian Affairs.C) The Ka Lahui group.D) The Hawaiian natives.80. Various native Hawaiians demand all the following EXCEPT _____.A) a greater autonomy within the stateB) more back rent on the crown landC) a claim on the Hawaiian crown landD) full independence from the USSECTION B SKIMMING AND SCANNINGIn this section there are six passages with a total of ten multiple-choice questions. An advertiser can use it nationally, by region, by markets, and even by specific locations within those markets. Outdoor advertising can be memorable. During an interview eight people out of ten revealed that they remembered specific outdoor posters. A problem in using outdoor advertising is that of getting reliable data on the number of people who actually see an advertisement. It may also take time to negotiate for the space for aspecific outdoor advertising location, to print the posters, or to paint the board.81. Legend has it that Alfred laid its foundations at the end of the ninth century. Certainly by the 12th century scholars were teaching in the town and their fame had spread to the learning. A group of English scholars left the French capital in 1167 to settle in Oxford and the place became a magnet for students and teachers from all over Britain. Today Oxford is a large, busy city, but the ancient university buildings in the center have remained largely untouched by the urban expansion. While most old universities have modernized radically to accommodate their growing populations, Oxford has managed to expand while still preserving its traditional structure. The 36 existing colleges are independent, self-governing institutions operating under the umbrella of the University of Oxford.82. The industrial societies have been extremely productive during the last two centuries. The economic advance has been remarkable. During this relatively short period of time, greater changes in peoples living conditions have occurred than in the thousands of years which preceded. During the past 2000 years the world population has increased 6 times, the annual world output has increased 80 times, and the distance a person can travel has gone up 1,000 times. There has also been much recent progress in art, culture, learning, and science. Such changes have led to a high rate of production and growth of the economy. Economists fear that within the next 100 to 150 years, the earths resources will become very scarce. Their fears are partly justified, but we should not be afraid. Industrial civilization adapts to new knowledge. By advancing knowledge, we not only create new forms of resources, but we also find ways to economize their use.
