Name Suffix
• Some men have a suffix as part of their legal name in Western countries because some families have a tradition of passing down the full name of the father to the son. • Sr. (Senior) – the first man to have the name, but only if he has passed his name down to his son; men who haven’t passed their name down do not have Sr. after the name • Jr. (Junior) – his son • III – his grandson • IV – his great-grandson • Example: Edgar Lee Clark III. • His first name is Edgar. His middle name is Lee. His family name is Clark. • His father’s full name is Edgar Lee Clark Jr. • His grandfather’s full name is Edgar Lee Clark Sr. • If he has a son and gives him the same name (Edgar Lee Clark), he will add IV after his son’s name.

In South American Countries people often take both of their parents last names. My best friend’s name is Ricardo Abend van Dalen.

• In Western countries, we usually call each other just by their preferred chosen name.

• Family name (or surname) • Given name
• However, some people choose to ask others to call them by their middle name rather than their first name.
• Example: One of my old friend’s name is Clinton Elliot Werner. • His friends called him Clinton for years, until a scandal happened in the White House with Bill Clinton. My friend chose not to go by his first name as it was often ridiculed by other classmates, and instead chose to go by his middle name from then on. • When signing his name on official documents, he often signs it as such: C. Elliot Werner.
• This is also a big difference between English-speaking countries and China.
• In western countries, when a woman gets married, she often changes her family name from her maiden name (her father’s family name) to her husband’s family name. • Example: My mother’s name is Lisa Cannon, but her maiden name is Nelson. • Cannon is my father’s and his family’s last name. Nelson was her family name, but she now uses Cannon as she is married to my father.
