必修5 Module 1阅读理解题组——练速度(35 mins)Ⅰ.阅读理解ABooks can’t stop a global pandemic. But,for a short while, they can let us forget the world around us and transport us to different places, allowing us to travel in spirit. Here are some picks for this month.Rohinton Mistry:A Fine BalanceMistry’s novel focuses on the lives of four central characters whose lives are on a downward spiral, from poverty to outright destitution and, ultimately, death.Mistry does not whitewash the reality of urban poverty in India. But as readers,we become absorbed in his characters’ lives we hope with them,we fear for them and,at the end,we cry for them.Elena Ferrante:My Brilliant FriendElena Ferrante’s novels take us straight to the Italian city of Napoli.Starting with My Brilliant Friend, the four novels chart the intensive relationship between two girls,Elena Greco (Lenù) and Raffaella Cerullo (Lila),who grow up in a poor neighbourhood in the 1950s.Reading Ferrante’s description calls forth images of Napoli and makes us feel like we are standing in the Piazza del Plebiscito. We can feel, hear and smell Napoli around us.Patrick Modiano:The Search WarrantThe Search Warrant pieces together the real-life story of Dora Bruder,a young Jewish girl who went missing in Paris in December 1941.Modiano attempts to retrace Dora’s movements across Paris and his book is full of evocative descriptions of quiet squares and streets.By tracing Dora’s possible steps,Modiano evocatively recreates the twilight atmosphere of Paris under occupation.Kazuo Ishiguro:The Remains of the DayThe Remains of the Day tells the story of Stevens, the aged butler of Darlington Hall, and his ill-judged life choices that saw him being involved with British fascism in the interwar years. This allusion to British fascism in particular is something that makes this novel stand out;it is a subject matter not often discussed or even taught.1.Which book is set in India?A.A Fine Balance.B.My Brilliant Friend.C.The Search Warrant.D.The Remains of the Day.2.What do My Brilliant Friend and The Search Warrant have in common?A.Both novels tell real-life stories.B.Both novels take place in Italy.C.Both are related to interpersonal relationship.D.Both give a vivid description of the surroundings.3.What is special about The Remains of the Day?A.Its moving story.B.Its miserable character.C.Its rarely mentioned subject.D.Its skillful techniques of description.BThe summer when I turned 16,my father gave me a car, which permitted Hannah and me to drive around Tucson whenever we wanted to.Hannah was my best friend.“Hannah’s amazing,” my mother always said. And sure enough, that summer she signed with a modelling agency. She was already doing runway work. One day,Hannah and I went to the movies. On the way home,we stopped at the McDonald’s drive-through,putting the fries on the seat between us to share.“Let’s ride around a while,” I said.It was a clear night, moonlight shone over the desert.Taking a turn too fast,I hit a patch of dirt and fishtailed.French fries on the floor. An impossible amount of blood on Hannah’s face. They took us in separate ambulances. In the ER,my parents spoke quietly,“Best plastic surgeon in the city.”This meant the end of her modelling career. We’d been wearing lap belts, but the car didn’t have shoulder harnesses.I’d cracked my cheekbone;Hannah’s forehead had split wide open. What would I say to her? When her mother,Sharon, came into my hospital room,I started to cry, bracing myself for her anger. She sat beside me and took my hand.“I almost ended my best friend when I was your age,” she said.“I totally damaged her car and mine.”“I’m so sorry,” I said.“You’re both alive,” she said,“and the rest is window dressing.” I started to protest, but Sharon stopped me,“I forgive you.Hannah will, too.”Sharon’s forgiveness allowed Hannah and me to stay friends throughout life.I think of her gift of forgiveness every time I want to resent someone for a perceived wrong. And whenever I see Hannah, the scars are a symbol of grace for me.4.What caused the car accident?A.Poor visibility.B.Driving too fast.C.Hitting a patch of dirt.D.Not staying focused.5.Which word can best describe Hannah’s mother?A.Supportive.B.Generous.C.Optimistic.D.Helpful.6.What result did the accident cause to Hannah and the author?A.It worsened their friendship.B.It made both of the two disabled.C.It changed Hannah’s working career.D.It ruined the author’s confidence in driving.7.Which is the best title for the text?A.Lucky SurvivalB.Lifelong FriendshipC.My Best Friend HannahD.Learning to ForgiveCWhy do We Use Zip Codes?Everyone has memorised exactly two ZIP codes:90210 and whatever their own ZIP code is.We can thank a certain TV show set in Beverly Hills for that.Aside from that, general knowledge of these five-digit figures is pretty limited. We put them at the end of addresses, and then our mail magically gets delivered to the right location. We discovered one of the most highly kept secrets all mail carriers know:what ZIP codes really are and how they work. The entire practice of using ZIP codes is a relatively new system that was put in place on July 1,1963.Before that, starting in 1943,the US Postal Service used a series of postal zones for large cities only.In 1944,a postal worker named Robert Moon handed on an idea for a new postal zone system that would cover the whole country. The first number would stand for a group of states, starting at zero on the east coast and ending at nine on the west coast, and the second and third numbers would specify (详述)to which sectional centre facility (the place where mail gets processed and distributed) the mail should go in that area. The US Postal Service eventually adopted this plan and,the Zone Improvement Plan Code—or ZIP code—was born.About 20 years after the first ZIP codes were put into place, the Postal Service made one more adjustment:the four digits that come after your ZIP code. These stand for a specific area that any given post office covers. The sixth and seventh numbers refer to a deliverysector, which could be a group of streets, one large building,or another small geographic area. The last two stand for a delivery segment(片区).Even though the US Postal Service says the proper contribution to the ZIP code’s creation goes to a committee of people, our addresses would look quite different if it weren’t for Moon’s numerical inspiration.8.Why are many people familiar with ZIP code “90210”?A.It’s easy to understand and memorise.B.It’s because of a famous TV programme.C.It’s related with Beverly Hills.D.It’s a ZIP code of five-digit figures.9.What can we know about postal zones used in 1943?A.It was the entire practice of ZIP codes.B.It was used for a very long time.C.It was popular with big cities.D.It wasn’t very convenient to use.10.What does the third number in a ZIP code stand for according to Moon’s system?A.The state.B.Where the letter is from.C.Where the letter is to.D.The proper post office.11.What does the author intend to do in Paragraph 5?A.What the four numbers at the end of a code mean.B.What ZIP codes really are and the uses they bring.C.The big change of US Postal Service.D.The US ZIP codes is really very complex.DIt’s tough to see or hear of a friend in crisis. One idea to keep in mind is that it is healthy for the distressed person to feel what he or she feels in the moment. When a person in crisis feels understood,he or she feels less alone and connected to the person who understands.A person, who experiences empathy(同理心)from a friend who can “go there” for a few minutes in order to authentically understand while still maintaining a strong and supportive attitude, may be relieved and healed. While a friend is telling you about the circumstance, the first and most important step is to listen for feelings, not ways to solve the problem. For example,a friend is terribly upset because her husband is threatening to leaveher. After fully honouring the feelings,it is important to ask the friend what would help.Maybe it is a good cry and some ice cream.Perhaps it’s a glass of wine and a walk.Everyone has different ways of dealing.Be respectful and ask the friend what she needs or wants, not what you prescribe.Take a second example, saying a close friend is being misrepresented by other friends. The friends are gossiping about her.During a conversation with her, listen for feelings.Honour her hurt and shock. The same equation is useful with a partner.Helping a friend or partner in crisis not only helps the person, but creates closeness and trust in the relationship, making opening up in the probable future. In addition, the person who is empathizing feels positive because he or she was able to help. When a person is truly able to comfort and reassure a loved one,he or she feels vital and useful, strengthening the relationship.12.What should we do first when we know a friend is in crisis?A.Keep away from him/her.B.Buy him/her a glass of wine.C.Understand how he/she feels.D.Show him/her ways to solve the problem.13.What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 3 refer to?A.A way to solve the crisis.B.A way to relieve a bad mood.C.A way to listen for feelings.D.A way to honour the feelings.14.How does the author prove his/her idea?A.By listing data.B.By quoting sayings.C.By giving examples.D.By conducting surveys.15.What does the text mainly talk about?A.How to keep a loved one.B.How to make new friends.C.How to work with your partner.D.How to help a friend in trouble.Ⅱ.阅读七选五Many people say “thank you” using text messages or chat these days.1 It’s a meaningful way to express gratitude when you receive a gift or become the recipient of someone’s thoughtful action.Address your letter warmly and make it personal and sincere.Open with a salutation.Begin your thank-you letter by addressing the person in the way that feels most natural.2 Whether the note is for your best friend, your teacher or your mom, this works.Express your gratitude sincerely.Thank-you notes are usually short and to the point,so start by thanking the person right away.3 Describing the gift a little will make it clear that you’ve thought about it and it’s something you cherish.4 Even if you don’t love the gift, think about the trouble and expense the person went to for your benefit.Show them that this effort, and the gift itself,is important to you.Try to be honest and sincere.Inquire after the other person or share a little news. Now that you’ve expressed your gratitude,it’s nice to write another few lines that show you care about the person.Ask some questions, and share information about your life. This makes all the difference between a dashed-off note and an actual thank-you letter, and the recipient will take even more pleasure in receiving your words.Close the letter.Think about the nature of your relationship and choose the closing that seems most appropriate(合适的).5A.Be specific about what you’re grateful for.B.If you can’t decide,it’s fine to just sign your name.C.Either a handwritten or typed letter is totally acceptable.D.Let them know why their specific gift is cherished.E.However,nothing beats writing an old-fashioned thank-you letter.F.It’s nice to write another few lines that show you care about the person.G.In almost every situation, starting with “Dear [person’s name]” is appropriate.参考答案必修5Module1阅读理解题组——练速度Ⅰ.【语篇导读】本文是一篇应用文。

AWhen I was in college, I spent a semester studying abroad at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland. In my brief time there, I came to love Scotland for its local culture, food and scenery. You might think:“Scotland isn’t so different from the U.S.; they still speak English there!” But when I stepped off the plane, I was greeted by a gruff-voiced(声音粗哑的) lady at customs. “You’ll be coming from America, then?” She asked me, and I nodded. “But all of our guys are leaving Glasgow for the States!” Her thick Scottish English and sense of humor were obvious right away. I was not in the U.S. any more, where customs agents never joke around. As I settled in at the university, I could feel myself getting used to hearing—and even speaking—the Scottish English of my customs agent. In classroom discussions, people would say “em” when they couldn’t think of what to say instead of “um”,which was great fun. After the first few weeks, I stopped chuckling about this. Strathclyde students stayed up late into the night, running around campus and shouting, “Go! Lat’s go, lat’s go(curse word) Glasgow!” Pretty soon, I was no longer saying “thanks” at the supermarket—instead, I said “cheers”.My Scottish friends drank whiskey and ate haggis(羊杂碎布丁). I drank plenty of whiskey but I was ashamed to admit that I wasn’t brave enough to try haggis. Scottish bakeries usually sell bridies(肉馅饼). Add a cup of tea—though I usually Americanized it by choosing coffee instead—and a bridie makes for a delicious breakfast.Every time I took a train anywhere in Scotland, I’d gaze out at the rolling hills and wonder if grass was greener than anywhere else in the world. Then I’d reflect that there’s a reason this country was the birthplace of golf.1.What did the author think of the lady at customs?A.Impolite.B.Friendly.C.Serious. D.Calm.2.Which of the following can replace the underlined word “chuckling” in Paragraph 3?A.talking loudly B.comparingC.laughing quietly D.hearing3.What is the author’s purpose of writing the text?A.To explain why Scotland is famous for golf.B.To promote the development of Scottish catering trade.C.To introduce differen t pronunciations of “em”and “um”.D.To share his experiences in Scotland as an exchange student.BAll parents and schoolteachers know that being able to spell properly is a fundamental skill that young people must develop before they enter the classroom. But, as every parent and teacher also knows, learning spelling can be difficult for children in the early stages. The problem with English spelling is that the letters do not correspond to (与……相对应)speech sounds.Good spelling skills are an important part of being able to read and write to a reasonable standard. Reading, writing and spelling are important in the first place because they all help to develop an effective level of literacy (识字). Without this, school coursework would not be completed satisfactorily and end-of-year exams would be failed. Getting good grades in exams, especially towards the end of a person's school life is extremely important if they are looking to go on to college or university before entering the employment market.Learning to spell is important because being able to spell correctly adds so much to your skills and abilities, especially when it comes to finding a college or university place, or entering the job market for the first time. Writing a decent CV (简历) and completing the application correctly is vital in the effort to make a good impression. It was reported recently that employers rejected the vast majority of 1,000 job applications submitted by graduates simply because of bad spelling.Could our use of technology be the reason for bad spelling? Although not proven, there have been concerns in recent years that the rise of text messaging and “chatspeak” used in social media could be leading to a reduction in literacy, as abbreviations (缩写) become commonly used by children. Opinions differ on this possibility. Some research suggests that this may not necessarily be true, but other studies have shown that in some cases it is a cause for concern. But the end of school education may be too late. Obviously, the main time for learning is during childhood when most people can achieve a reasonable level of spelling to help their overall literacy. But it is perhaps surprising that many adults have extremely poor spelling and struggle with common words such as embarrass, occasion and restaurant.4.Children's difficulty in learning spelling lies in the fact that ________.A.they don't know how to readB.the rules are difficult to masterC.many words are long and complexD.the letters don't match speech sounds5.The underlined word “decent” in Paragraph 3 can best be replaced by “________”.A.quick B.good-qualityC.recent D.well-meaning6.We may conclude from Paragraph 4 that ________.A.the use of text messaging leads to good spellingB.“chatspeak” helps children develop their liter acyC.the use of technology has caused increasing concernD.common use of abbreviations shows children's literacy level7.What would be the best title for the text?A.Why is learning to spell important?B.Why do many children have poor spelling?C.When should children start to learn spelling?D.How should children develop their spelling skills?CAt first sight, Ronny looked like other kids in the first-grade classroom where I volunteered as a Reading Mom. However, he usually arrived at school wearing old clothes with wind-blown hair and a dirty face.On the days when it was Ronny's turn to read, he sat very close tome. I watched his dirty fingers move slowly under each letter as he tried to speak out “Bud the Sub”. It sounded more like “Baw Daw Saw” when he said it because of his difficulty with the alphabet (字母).The year passed quickly and Ronny had made some progress but hardly enough to take him up to the grade level. A few weeks before the school year ended, I held an award ceremony. I had gifts and certificates for everyone. It took me a while to think about where Ronny fit; I believed the gift could cheer him up. I finally decided on “Most Improved Reader”. I showed Ronny his certificate and a book.A few days later, I saw Ronny reading the book when I went back to the school. His teacher said, “He hasn't put that book down. That's the first book he's ever owned.”Fighting back tears, I came to Ronny and asked,“Will you read me your book, Ronny?” He nodded. And then, for the next few minutes, he read to me more fluently than I'd ever thought possible for him. When he finished reading, Ronny closed his book and said, “Good book.”At that moment, I knew I would get serious about my own writing career and do what that author had done —care enough to make a difference in children.8.From the first two paragraphs, we know Ronny ________.A.was popular among his classmatesB.was the dirtiest in his classC.had trouble with his studyD.disliked the Reading Mom9.Why did the author give Ronny a book?A.She liked Ronny very much.B.She wanted to encourage Ronny.C.Ronny had no money to buy books.D.Ronny was the most improved reader.10.After listening to Ronny's reading, the author felt ________.A.upset and disappointed B.worried and happyC.curious and satisfied D.moved and surprised11.Which of the following can best describe the passage?A.True happiness comes from helping others.B.A small action makes a big difference.C.A teacher is better than two books.D.One is never too old to learn.DAmbar presses her hand to her forehead as she considers the question on her screen: how many sevens in 91? The ten-year-old has been struggling with it for about a minute when she smiles,“13!” Her tutor responds by posting a large smiling cat picture on her screen — the virtual (虚拟的) meaning of a pat on the back. He is sitting on the other side of the world in an online tutoring centre in India.Ambar, who attends Pakeman Primary School in London, is one of nearly 4,000 primary school children in Britain that have signed up for weekly one-to-one maths sessions with tutors based in India and Sri Lanka. that we felt like a family. It is a moment to reconnect and get to know each other st year,we travelled to a cottage in Ireland where we had no Internet and no neighbours. In the middle of the countryside, away from our constantly changing lives,we were able to become like a little family again. This year,we went to Barcelona. It was a very big change. We were surrounded by culture and life and joy. There were bars and parties. It was different, but one thing stayed very much the same—I felt at home again and we felt like a family again.A lot of people feel that New Year’s Eve cannot live up to expectations.Ideas such as the “New Year’s kiss” and “resolutions” create a lot of pressure for people to have a night to remember,a night that will change their lives and perhaps make the next year one worth living.I think those people are missing the point. If Christmas is about family, why can’t New Year be about friends?4.What does the underlined word “It” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?A.Family.B.Living abroad.C.Home.D.Staying with friends.5.Why doesn’t the author care about “New Year’s resolutions”?A.New Year’s resolutions cannot be reached.B.His lifestyle makes him always ready for change.C.It’s meaningless to make any big changes in life.D.Making New Year’s resolutions creates much pressure.6.What does the author try to convey through his experiences in Ireland and Barcelona?A.Life is peaceful and enjoyable.B.Living abroad is a happy experience.C.Staying with friends makes one feel at home.D.Travelling abroad enriches one’s life experience.7.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?A.New Year’s Celebration:How?B.True Friendship:What?C.Living Abroad:Comfortable or Complicated?D.Change:Plan It or Make It?CScientists have found that eating dark chocolate appears to lower the risk of depression by a quarter. While 7.6 percent of the 13,000 people surveyed reported depressive symptoms, just 1.5 percent of the chocolate eaters did.The study also found that the people who consumed the most of any chocolate were also 57 percent less likely to report depressive symptoms. The study is the first to examine the association with depression according to the type of chocolate consumed. The team assessed data from 13,626 adults from the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.A range of other factors including height, weight, marital status, education, household income, physical activity, smoking and chronic(慢性的) health problems were also taken into account to ensure the study only measured chocolate’s effect on depressive symptoms. After adjusting for these factors,it was found that individuals who reported eating any dark chocolate in two 24-hour periods had 70 percent lower odds of reporting clinically relevant depressive symptoms in the previous two weeks than those who reported not eating chocolate at all.Chocolate contains a number of psychoactive ingredients(精神活性成分) which produce a feeling of euphoria(兴奋感) similar to that of cannabinoid(大麻素),found incannabis. It also contains phenylethylamine(苯丙氨酸),which is believed to be important for regulating people’s moods. However British scientists urged caution about the findings, suggesting that the decision to eat dark chocolate could be linked to other health factors. For example, people who choose dark chocolate may be more health-conscious in general, which is known to protect against depression.Depressed people are also more likely to desire more sugary fatty foods and so could be less likely to pick a dark alternative when choosing chocolate.8.What is the aim of the study?A.To find a cure for depression.B.To find out the cause of depression.C.To research on the ingredients of chocolate.D.To study the association between depression and chocolate.9.What is phenylethylamine?A.Something that can make people excited.B.Something that can adjust people’s moods.C.Something that can make people depressed.D.Something that can make people overweight.10.What is British scientists’ attitude toward the findings?A.Supportive.B.Negative.C.Doubtful.D.Cautious.11.What are depressed people more likely to do?A.Eat sugary fatty foods.B.Have dark chocolates.C.Exercise outdoors.D.Concern about health.DCan you trust your very first childhood memories?Maybe not,a new study suggests.Past researches show that people’s earliest memories typically form around 3 to 3.5 years of age.But in a recent survey of more than 6,600 people,British scientists have found that 39 percent of participants claimed to have memories from age 2 or younger. These first memories are likely false, the researchers said. This was particularly the case for middle-aged and older adults. For the study, researchers asked participants to describe their first memory and the age at which it occurred.Participants were told they had to be sure the memory was the one that had happened. For example,it shouldn’t be based on a photograph,a family story or any source other than direct experiences. Then the researchers examined the content, language anddescriptive details of these earliest memories and worked out the likely reasons why people would claim to have memories from an age when memories cannot form.As many of these memories dated before the age of 2,this suggests they were not based on actual facts, but facts or knowledge about their babyhood or childhood from photographs or family stories.Often these false memories are fired by a part of an early experience, such as family relationships or feeling sad,the researchers explained.“We suggest that what a rememberer has in mind when recalling fictional early memories is...a mental representation consisting of remembered pieces of early experiences and some facts or knowledge about their own babyhood or childhood,”study author Shania Kantar said in a journal news release,“Additionally, further details may be unconsciously inferred or added.Such memory—like mental representations come over time,to be collectively experienced when they come to mind,so for the individual, they quite simply are memories, which particularly point to babyhood.”“Importantly, the person remembering them doesn’t know this is fictional,”study co-author Martin Conway said.“In fact, when people are told that their memories are false they often don’t believe it.”12.What can we learn from a recent study?A.Memories form after the age of 3.B.Participants are good at telling stories.C.Adults are likely to form false memories.D.Earliest memories may play a trick on us.13.Which source did the researchers require for the earliest memories?A.A direct experience.B.A family story.C.A family photo.D.A sad feeling.14.What are these fictional early memories according to Kantar?A.They are repeated mental representations.B.They are a collection of early experiences.C.They are a combination of both facts and fictions.D.They are further details of remembered experiences.15.Which part of a newspaper is this text probably taken from?A.Society.B.Psychology.C.Technology.D.Health.Ⅱ.阅读七选五Last weekend I was lucky enough to attend one of Spain’s most famous carnivals in the city of Cádiz. You can only understand why it is one of the most important carnivals in the world after seeing it for yourself.Everybody was fancy-dressed from top to toe.1 Almost instantly after stepping off the train,we were filled with joy.2 A number of people parading through the streets playing traditional music filled people with happiness andcraziness like I have never seen before. As we wandered around,we saw that the creativity of some costumes was incredible! From Shrek to Japanese wrestlers, the imagination and effort put into the fancy dresses was remarkable. You could really tell that people put a lot of time and energy into making some amazing costumes.3 They were mostly old men singing some traditional songs. This gave the carnivala pure essence of originality,as they were singing from their heart.Furthermore, the fact that I was not able to understand the inside jokes did not matter,as I was attracted by the actions and expressions they provided.4As the night progressed, the streets got more packed with people.A moment that felt quite dreamlike was when we were dancing outside a convenience store with music provided by the owners booming through their speakers!Everyone who passed would be jamming along to the music.5.It was like a mini festival. After this special weekend of festival,it is true to say that the Spanish know how to party!A.Everyone was dancing.B.People got more and more excited.C.We saw everyone was in high spirits.D.It made me feel like I was in a fairy-tale world.E.Afterwards,we went to the main party at El Puerto.F.Then there were the groups dotted around the city.G.These mini street shows were a true taste of Spanish culture.参考答案必修1Module1阅读理解题组——练速度Ⅰ.【语篇导读】本文是一篇应用文。

必修五 Module 1阅读理解提速练——练速度(限时:20分钟)A(2021·哈尔滨市第三中学一模)Babies don't learn to talk just from hearing sounds. They are lipreaders too. It happens during the stage when a baby's babbling (咿呀声) gradually changes from unclearvoices into that first “mama” or“dada”. The baby inorder to do like you has to figure out how to shape theirlips to make that particular sound they are hearing, according to developmental psychologist David Lewkowicz of Florida Atlantic University, who led the study.Apparently it doesn't take them too long to absorb the movements that match basic sounds. By their first birthdays, babies start changing back to look you in the eye again. It offers more evidence that quality facetime with babies is very important for speech development more than, say, turning on the latest baby DVD.But Lewkowicz went a step further. He and his student Amy HansenTift tested nearly 180 babies, groups of them at ages 4,6,8,10 and 12 months. How? They showed videos of a woman speaking in English or Spanish to babies of English speakers. They found that when the speaker used English, the 4montholds gazed mostly into her eyes. The 6montholds spent equal amounts of time looking at the eyes and the mouth. The 8and 10montholds studied mostly the mouth. At 12 months, attention started changing back toward the speaker's eyes. But what happened when these babies accustomed to English heard Spanish? The 12montholds studied the mouth longer, just like younger babies. They needed the extra information to recognize the unfamiliar sounds. That fits with research into bilingualism (双语) that shows babies' brains adjust themselves to distinguishing the sounds of their native language over other languages in the first year of life. The continued lipreading shows the1yearolds clearly still are fit for learning. Babies are so hard to study that this is “a fairly heroic data set”,says Duke University cognitive neuroscientist Greg Appelbaum, who found the research so fascinating that he wants to know more.语篇解读:本文是一篇说明文。
