never been a woman from the UK who had accomplished this challenge.I wondered what it would be like to survive in temperatures cold enough to freeze your flesh in seconds,so I sent off the application form. The application form full of pictures of male explorers arrived. The words “Are you man enough for the ultimate(极限的) challenge?” made me angry and even more determined to join the team.Over 500 individuals applied for a place in the team, and the selection process included physical and psychological tests④ designed to pick the best group. In one test, there was a huge rope ladder we had to climb, and I froze at the top because I have a fear of heights.I thought my hopes were fading as most other applicants sailed past, leaving me behind. But two others helped me over, and later I found out that the organizers were not looking for amazing individuals, but great team players, and this moment had shown them who would take care of others in the team.I had revealed my weakness, and in a place like the Arctic, you have to be yourself,as there is nowhere to hide. These personalities of seeking for help and showing weakness are necessary for women to master.I realized that by being myself,I could succeed.I was eventually selected for the team.I got to be aware that I could achieve more than I ever imagined—more importantly,by sharing my story with others,I could inspire them to take a weekend. They all claimed that hours of exposure to loud music can cause discomfort. One added that band members prefer to play at maximum volume⑥ and forget the harm that loud music can bring about. The same thing not only occurs to musicians. It’s also not rare for daily users since listening to loud music on loud sound equipment has become a part of modern lifestyle.According to the WHO,the practice has put more than a billion people throughout the world, aged 12-35,at risk of losing their hearing. We also interviewed some headphone users in the street, and the majority of them said that they were not heavy users but admitted that they used headphones for hours on the subway and in the office or home. It’s easy for these people to gradually increase the volume without awareness, especially in a noisy environment.Often, headphone users fail to realize they’re listening to audio at unsafe levels until serious hearing problems suddenly occur. There are tons of reasons⑦ for hearing loss, including loud acoustic (听觉的) sources, drug abuse⑧,and diseases.Experts suggest frequent medical checks and prevention measures⑨.Whether congenital(先天的) or acquired, loss of hearing is usually irreversible.“Once DayD.Raising Awareness of Protecting HearingDCan I talk about salary at work?In a word:yes. As HR company Insperity put it in a recent blog post:Can your employees discuss their salaries or wages with their co-workers?Yes.Even if you have a company policy against it?Yes.The freedom to discuss your salary at work is a protected right under federal labor law.The National Labor Relations Act of 1935 protects your right to discuss the conditions of your employment, including issues related to safety and pay, even when you’re not protected by a union.Talking about salary with colleagues can be uncomfortable, since there’s such a taboo about discussing money matters, but it’s an important step towards achieving equal pay for equal work. One barrier, however, arises fro how we think of our own financial wort.Too many people I talk to wrongly consider their salary as a reflection of their worthiness,a statement about their skills, experience,or value. At the end of the day,if we can all separate our self-worth from our salaries a bit more,it’ll become easier to talk frankly with our colleagues.Asking about money outright can be tough,so one trick I’ve picked up along the way is to ask for your colleagues to confirm or deny. For instance, you might volunteer your salary first and ask “Does that sound about right to you?”by way of compariso.Or,let’s say you’re interviewing for a promotion to become a manager. You might ask a fellow manager about the kind of salary you should expect by saying,“I’m seeing salaries for this kind of position ranging from $65,000 to $70,000—does that seem accurate to you?” This way, even if your colleague isn’t comfortable sharing their salary outrigh, they can help you identify if your expectations are on poin or way of.12.What makes co-workers uncomfortable to talk about salaries?A.The safety issue.B.The federal labor law.C.The wrong idea about salaries.D.The reflection of their worthiness.13.What does “taboo” underlined in Paragraph 3 refer to?A.A prohibited practice.B.A religious belief.C.A general agreement.D.A social custom.14.What is mainly talked about in Paragraph 4?A.One of my interview experiences.B.My way of asking about salary.C.The method of raising questions.D.An example of getting promoted.15.What can be the best title for the text?A.How to Discuss Salaries at WorkB.Ways of Talking about SalariesC.Do Time for a BrainstormA brainstorm is a session where a small group of people come together to solve a problem. People voice spontaneous ideas, sometimes just shouting, and a note-taker writes them all down. 46 By getting different ideas out there, ideas are said to bounce off each other and even can help solve the problem at hand. Brainstorming is often a group exercise but individuals can also conduct personal brainstorms.47 He defined it as using the brain to storm a creative problem and do so in commando (突击队) fashion, with each stormer attacking the same objective. According to him, it was easier to tone down a wild idea than think up a new one. He placed importance on the collection of as many ideas as possible and dismissed scientific thinking.Brainstorming has become one of the most popular ways to solve problems and hold discussion in schools and businesses. Many students brainstorm for a group assignment or even for a personal essay.Sarah Grace, 24, is an Australian marketing analyst and uses brainstorming during all her creative duties. She thinks brainstorming is the best way to work as a team. The sessions get everyone on the same page, everyone moving together and with a clear understanding about the foundations of an event or idea. 48However, a big problem with brainstorming is creating a mess that leads people further away from a solution.49 If you don't have a strong moderator or leader of the brainstorm, can go really off track, and people just start discussing something totally different.Brainstorming can sometimes confuse the human brain.50 If you brainstorm too much and your page is filled up with all the messy links, you can paint yourself into a bit of corner and get trapped with ideas. You need to move past brainstorming as soon as you have something workable.A.The ideas can be smart, strange or crazy.B.It is caused by a lack of direction from a leader.C.Brainstorming really helps her organize her thoughts.D.Brainstorming really is the best way to build team spirit.E.It can open too many doors and not suggest a clear direction.F.Brainstorms were popularized in the 1940s by American advertising boss Alex Osborn.G.They can be words, phrases, paragraphs and anything that can help answer the question.。
