She or he is called a“life coach”. People who are at the crossroads in their life, and corporations that want to give certain employees a career boost, are turning to them for help. The idea that one person’s success story can change other people’s life for the better goes back at least to the 1930s. Dale Carnegie’s famous selfimprovement program “How to Win Friends and Influence People” came along soon thereafter. But this new style of life coaches includes more than enthusiastic speakers or writers. They use their own experiences in business, sports, military service, or psychotherapy(心理疗法) to help others make critical life decisions. They often give their approaches a slogan, such as“energy coaching”“fearless living”or“working yourself happy”.Dave La khani in Boise, Idaho, for instance, works with salespeople to develop what he calls a “road map”. He says an ongoing relationship with a coach is like having a personal fitness trainer for one’s career and life outside work.Lakhani’s Bold Approach coachi ng firm also donates some of its time to help people who are anything but successful—including battered women and struggling single mothers. But others in the socalled“helpful professions”are not thrilled about the lifecoaching movement. They say that anyone, trained or untrained, can call himself or herself a life coach, and these slick(华而不实的) promoters who mess with people’s life can do more harm than good.【解题导语】当你处于人生的重要时刻时,当你想让公司里某些职员的事业得以提升时,你可以求助于人生教练,他们能帮助你做出人生中的重大决定。

B(2016·唐山一模)The spread of Western eating habits around the world is bad for human health and the environment. These findings come from a new report in the journal Nature.David Tilman, a professor of ecology at the University of Minnesota, America, examined information from 100 countries to identify what people ate and how a diet affected health. He noted a movement beginning in the 1960s. He found that as nations industrialized(工业化), population increased and earnings rose, more people began to adopt what has been called the Western diet. The Western diet is high in sugar, fat, oil and meat. By eating these foods, people began to get fatter and sicker. David Tilman says overweight people are at greater risk for non-infectious diseases like diabetes(糖尿病) and heart disease.Unfortunately when people become industrialized, if they adopt this Western diet, they are going to have these health problems, especially in developing countries in Asia. China is an example where the number of diabetes cases has been jumping from less than one percent to 10 percent of the population as they began to industrialize over a 20-year period. And that is happening all across the world, in Mexico, in Nigeria and so on.And, a diet bad for human beings, is also bad for the environment. As the world’s population grows, more forests and tropical(热带的) areas will become farmlands for crops or grasslands for cattle. We are likely to have more greenhouse gas in the future from agriculture than that coming out of all forms of transportation right now.Mr. Tilman calls the link between the diet, the env ironment and human health, “a trilemma”—a problem offering a difficult choice. He says one possible solution is leaving the Western diet behind.【解题导语】《自然》杂志上一篇新的报告显示,西方饮食对人的健康和环境有不良影响,人们应警惕西方饮食带来的危害。

There may also be offers for investment deals, bank loans and special holidays. However, to many computer users, this use of electronic spam to sell products has become a major problem as it makes computer communication more difficult. Many companies who want to send a great deal of advertising might use th e services of a“spammer”.A spammer is a person or company that uses computers to send out millions of copies of the same sales information. Spammers find email addresses from websites, news groups and “chat rooms” where people send messages to each other. Most spam is sent by companies who are trying to get you to buy their products. Some of these are honest companies that offer good products or services for fair prices. These companies can offer their products for a cheaper price than you might find in a store. However, much of the spam on the Internet is sent by criminals who are trying to sell products that do not exist or offer services they will not provide. They are only interested in stealing your money. When you answer their spam, you find you are expected to send them money and receive a gift. If you just follow what they ask you to do without any consideration, it is likely that you will be cheated and lose some money.【解题导语】这是一篇说明文。

I’d been out of high school for four years, but my high school headmaster,Mr.Gardner, invited me to a Valentine’s Day dance party at school. The thought of seeing my former teachers was exciting. So I agreed. When Friday came, I cleaned up,dressed up and drove tothe high school gym. I chatted with my teachers and approached Mr. Gardner to thank him before leaving. Just then, the band started playing and a young girl stood up to sing. One look at her and I was crazy—I had never seen such a beautiful girl!I asked Mr. Gardner who she was,and he answered,“That’s Marilyn Riley,Cut Riley’s daughter.”I was shocked to say the least. They lived just around the corner from me. Iwalked across the gym floor to introduce myself,“Hi,I’m Jack Joseph.”“I know who you are,”was her nottoofriendly response.“Would you like to dance?” I asked. “No!I’m working,” she shot back.“Can I call you next week for a movie date?” I asked. “No” was her response. For the next month I phoned, trying to set up a date. She always had the same answer:No. Then one rainy afternoon in March as I was driving home after basketball practice,I saw Marilyn, walking with no umbrella,no raincoat and no hat. I pulled alongside her and asked if she needed a ride, half expecting her to say no. Instead, she stepped over the roadside and sat down on the seat next to me. It was only a few blocks to her house, but after pulling into her driveway we talked for 45 minutes. It was magic from then on.【解题导语】本文是一篇记叙文。

A(2022·威海检测)Barbara McClintock was one of the most important scientists of the 20th century. She made important discoveries about genes and chromosomes(染色体)。
Barbara McClintock was born in 1902 in Hartford, Connecticut. Her family moved to the Brooklyn area of New York City in 1908. Barbara was an active child with interests in sports and music. She also developed an interest in science. She studied science at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. Barbara was among a small number of undergraduate students to receive training in genetics in 1921. Years later, she noted that few college students wanted to study genetics.Barbara McClintock decided to study botany, the scientific study of plants, at Cornell University. She completed her undergraduate studies in 1923. McClintock decided to continue her education at Cornell. She completed the maste r’s degree in 1925. Two years later, she finished all her requirements for the doctorate degree.McClintock stayed at Cornell after she completed her educatio n. She taught students botany. The 1930s was not a good time to be a young scientist in the United States. The country was in the middle of the great economic depressio n. Millions of Americans were unemployed. Male scientists were offered jobs. But female geneticists were not much in demand. An old friend from Cornell, Marcus Rhoades, invited McClintock to spend the summer of 1941 working at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. It is a research center on Long Island, near New York City. McClintock started a temporary job with the genetics department. A short time later, she accepted a perpetual position in the laboratory and got continual incomes. This gave her the freedom to continue her research without repeatedly asking for financial aid.By the 1970s, her discoveries had had an effect on everything from genetic engineering to cancer research. McClintock won the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1983 for her discovery of the ability of genes to change positions on chromosomes. She was the first American woman to win an unshared Nobel Prize.【解题导语】本文主要叙述了有名女科学家Barbara McClintock的经受以及她在基因和染色体争辩方面取得的重大成就。

Unit 3 Inventors and inventionsⅠ阅读理解AJon Hoffman was sitting at a red light when he saw a man run out of a store carrying a plastic donation jar full of cash.Dressed in plain clothes,Jon Hoffman caught the man and pressed him against the hood(引擎盖) of his car. But Hoffman had trouble controlling the thief, and they got into a struggle.“The detective has a military background, and he said he thought the suspect must have a military background, too, because he was able to break away so easily,”a local police spokesperson said. The detective called out for help as a crowd gathered. Among those watching were Harvey and Kirby, two day laborers.Harvey did what has become common these days—he took out his phone to shoot the video. “I hate to say it,but I thought that this policeman was doing something stupid,”Harvey sai d. “But when he asked for help,I thought, well, there wouldn’t be shooting if I got over there in time.” Harvey jumped into action, while he was still recording the video. So did Kirby.“Harvey caught hold of the suspect’s arms, while Kirby seized his legs, and they were able to get the suspect to the ground to help Detective Hoffman put the handcuffs(手铐) on,”said the police spokesperson. The 27yearold suspect was charged with resisting arrest and other offenses. The charity jar he stole held less than$50.“I’ve been on the wrong side of the law several times in my life,”Harvey said. “It feels good to be on the right side and do something positive.”After the arrest, the three men got to know each other at a local steak house —Hoffman’s treat,as a thank you.【解题导语】本文是一篇新闻故事,讲述了一位侦探在两位临时工的协助下制服一名嫌疑人的过程。

Questions arise, though, when it comes to all of the decisions involved in choosing a college. One of the first considerations may be finance. State and public colleges are often the least expensive. Often, though, the better colleges are private and more expensive. It is sad when gifted students cannot attend a college of their choice just for financial reasons.Another major factor is location. Whether the college is in a small town or large city can have a major impact on its activities. A water lover probably will be more comfortable spending four years near an ocean or a lake. Those who cannot tolerate heat will probably be more comfortable at a northern college. Distance from homemay also come into consideration. If family is a top priority, that person should stay close to home; on the other hand, if independence is desired, a campus farther from home would be more appropriate.School size also plays a major role in the decision process. If you want to get to know your teacher, a small college is suitable. For those of you who consider yourself a “people_person” and want a wide range of activities, a large college is more fitting. Your area of interest is another factor to consider in the decisionmaking process if you want to get the most from your education. The whole point of college is to learn what is of interest to you.Crucially(至关重要地), one must take into consideration the colleges by which you can realistically be accepted. An Ivy League school for an average student would probably not be a good match. Similarly, an average s chool for an aboveaverage student would not work well. The college should provide enough of a challenge for the student to work hard. Although there may not be the perfect college out there, there probably will be one that is close. Those who cannot find a suitable college are probably not looking hard enough.【解题导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍了高中生在选择适合自己的大学时要考虑到的四个因素:个人经济情况、大学的地理位置、学校规模以及个人的成绩,其中个人的成绩是至关重要的。
